I think I read you were going to be in south GA, but if you are up this way...
20-May: Run the Rails 5/10k in Buford, GA.
I'll be running it! Parts of the course I run almost daily.2 -
@MobyCarp @lporter229 Thank you for the input from your experience. Just for reference, here are what Daniel's said, and what my current PR's are, and when I hit them, because some I haven't tried for new ones in a while
Daniels:
1 mile: 7:30
5k: 25:53
10k: 53:58
HM: 1:59:04
Full: 4:08:15
PR's
1 Mile: 7:31 (11/24/16)
5k 23:22 (11/8/16)
10k: 53:58 (today, according to Strava "best efforts)
HM: 2:01:09 (9/23/16)
I'm not really thinking I can run a full at 9:28 pace, especially with all the X-Factors in there with it being my first marathon, and the distance will be a PR, etc... It's more that it got me to thinking that maybe I could start out with the 4:15 pacer and not want to die.
I ran my 19 mile last weekend at 4:15 marathon pace, and it wasn't all that bad, and there were some killer hills on the run that the marathon won't have, and the marathon is a net downhill. I apologize if I'm sounding like I'm trying to justify craziness (well, maybe I am) I just figured giving more info to you folks I look up to is a good idea.
It's all kind of academic, since I'm still 6 and a half weeks out, but it is fun to think about, and I am a numbers junkie!2 -

May's Goal = 125 miles

ewww, nope, I couldnt do that, but then again I live in Montana where I had to dig my driveway out of a foot and a half of snow in -45 degree weather this last winter, took 2 hours with me and my husband, so maybe 90 degrees in spring isnt so bad. tomorrow is suppose to be 75, oh I cant wait for that, its been a long freaking winter and very cold5 -
Date :::: Miles :::: Cumulative

Today started out crappy, weather-wise and work-wise. But things improved on all fronts in the afternoon. The sun finally came out. I wanted to walk Stella (the mystery terrier) and then get a run in before I had to leave to get my massage. But I got home later than anticipated so knew I wasn't going to get both things done. I dressed for both (layers) but resigned to just the walk. But once I got on the trail, Stella was moving fast so I decided to just try a bit of running. And what do you know, she was up for it! I had the long retractable leash instead of the hands-free bungee leash and I think it made all the difference. Seems like she doesn't like to run right up next to me! So we managed 3 miles with very little falling behind and just a few impromptu stops to pee (her, not me). The pace was kind of all over the place but it was the most successful run with her in quite some time. I don't like holding the leash handle so I might have to see if there are any other options.
So, following that, I went for my massage - and it was heavenly. I told the woman I was really tight in my calves, quads and shoulders, and man did she dig in. Afterwards she told me how tight I was in those areas, like she hadn't really believed me when I said it. I guess I need to stretch more. Maybe roll them out? I'd love to get a massage once a week but I'd have to find a cheaper one.
Overall, I'm feeling great after a good run, great massage, and some pizza. Which I will be following with some ice cream shortly.

I ran half the miles I had planned today as my back is still pretty feisty. It feels okay standing and great when I'm walking or laying down, but it hurts something awful when I'm sitting. I had to make my desk a standing desk just to be halfway comfortable at work. I have a chiro appointment tomorrow, and hopefully that will straighten me out so I can stop being a whiny baby. Until then I'm keeping mileage low and easy.
I did get to try out both my trail shoes -- on the canal tow path only, so they wouldn't get too dirty and I wouldn't tweak my back further on real trails -- and I like them both! I like the Terra Kiger a bit more than the Wildhorse, but I think the WH will be a better choice for a longer distance. I'll give them both a shot this weekend (I hope, as long as my back plays along) but am 90% decided on keeping both pairs.

I felt pretty good about my run today. The temperature was nice but it was a little windy. I will be running in my first 5k on Saturday. I am excited, but also getting a little nervous. The weather is supposed to be really nice on Saturday. Any tips for a first time 5k? Things to do or things I should avoid?

I'm in for May!

@lporter229 - I was always a swimmer not a runner. It's taken my best friend 15+ years to turn me into a runner. The last time I got into a pool - 2,000 yards, which would have been a nice easy warm up in my swimming years.... nearly killed me, and took me an hour.... I completely understand....
@KatieJane83 you just gave me a heart attack- my 5k is 29:53 as of march, which isn't that far off of yours, and seeing a 1 at the beginning of that time prediction got me scared for my upcoming half(my first). However, the small 5k difference leads to a substantial half difference (I had to look this up to talk myself back down.) it predicts 2:17 for me. I did 13.5 miles in 2:42 the other day, by myself. So, I figured with race environment and having my buddy back I could possibly break 2:30. So 2:17 might not be too terrible an estimate for me?? But under two as a predicted goal would have had me a bit panicked.
1.6 this morning at 30 degrees and snowing.
4 tonight at 60 and sunny. I am a native and I'm even thinking the weather needs to adjust its meds....
8.7/100
Other question I have - could someone explain to this Luddite how to post pictures on this thing????
There may be some neat things to show after my trail race this weekend, and I am probably just being dumb, but I don't have any idea how most of this works.3 -
Well it's extremely intimidating to see all of these really high goals, but I honestly am just going to aim for 8 miles this month. That's along with the goals of actually running a full mile twice a week, of course.
I'm a definite beginner, but I do hope to make some regular appearances here from now on.13 -
@AlursaMarie Nothing wrong with 8 miles as your starting goal. We all started out with short distances and slowly built up our strength/endurance over time to what you see now. You will find this to be a very supportive - non-judgemental group - unless you winge on Shoe Purchases - then you will get the gears - in a friendly way
5 hour drive for work this morning. Checked into my Hotel and searched for a few local Running Trails. Got 10 km in along the River bank in Edmonton, Kinsmen - Emily Murphy Park - Hawrelak Park. Poked my nose into a few other trails. I will have to get back into them tomorrow night or Saturday Morning. Still had some Ice Pack's across the Trail in a few places where the Trail was on the North Face of the River Bank and in perpetual shade.
Legs were a little tired and tight after yesterdays Hill Climb. Might have to pop a cold one and watch the boys chase the puck around the ice at the Good Old Hockey Game.

Welcome @AlursaMarie and @imali1984!
@PinkamenaD8 - How new to running are you? With 100k as your goal I'm guessing 5k is something you have run before, maybe even somewhat regularly? If not then you might check out C25k. If so, then they also have programs to bridge from C25k to 10k that might be what you are looking for. You might also check out the Hal Higdon training plans for 10k and Half Marathon.

@mnlittlefinn - interesting on your breathing yesterday. I don’t know anything about the breathing in 4 and then out 4. I assume you mean 4 short breaths? Glad you love the shoes. I ordered a pair of Brooks Glycerin 14s yesterday. My pair only has ~200 miles but I really like them and they are phasing them out for the next ones.
@katieJane83 - so cute! Have fun!
@skippygirlsmom - lol you are going to trip the guy if he laps you!
@honuNui - Thank for reminding us on the sunscreen. I rarely get to run in daylight, so it’s not an issue then, but cycling is always in the sun and for many hours. I always smother my face and arms in sunscreen but I ignore my legs because they never seem to burn or tan. I just ordered a long sleeve shirt to wear when cycling in the heat that has sun protection. A couple of the cyclists I ride with wear them and I always thought it was so crazy in the Florida heat/humidity, but I decided I better do it because I think in 3-4 hours I definitely sweat off the sunscreen. Once school is out I will be running in the sun so I need to figure out how to protect my skin then.
Had a really nice 5 miles today. Tuesday was awful because of humidity, but today was nice! Only 83% humidity and 66F. It makes such a difference. Our neighborhood is full of rabbits lately. For years I would see at most 2 on my runs. I've been seeing 6 or more every morning. Yesterday when leaving for work, I saw 4 in my neighbor's yard. Today I only saw 2 in the yard and when I was .15 miles down the street I saw a coyote. Poor bunnies!
5/1 - 4 miles + strength training
5/2 - 3.5 miles
5/3 - 21 miles cycling
5/4 - 5 miles + strength training
