@snowyne and @kgirlhart - Sounds like you both had great races, congratulations
@claireariela Welcome to this challenge. If you are looking for encouragement and motivation, you've come to the right place!
@girlinahat Congratulations on running your first HM! From the elevation graph, it looks like it was a fun one
@KeepRunningFatboy I saw the entry for your Flying Pig Marathon on Strava. What a great time, and you kept up the pace until the end, absolutely impressive!
@MobyCarp It's great to read how well your recovery from Boston is going this year.
@kristinegift I hope you get the back pain figured out quickly.
@HRKinchen If you are already at 12.5 of 30 mi now, you are well on track to meeting your goal, great!
@claireariela I don't know about MapMyRun, but there are a few dedicated C25K ("couch to 5k") apps, e.g. this one and this.
@Orphia Great recap of your 50km walk. 10 hours of hiking, I can't even imagine how exhausting that must be, especially with those stairs towards the end!
@garygse Okay, stopping the watch at 12.99 is clear proof that you do not suffer from OCD ^^
@ddmom0811 Too bad that the blood test will keep you from running. But an early rest day probably won't hurt - I'm always impressed by how much cycling and strength training you do in addition to running!
@lporter229 Stella is so cute with her medal I can't even imagine doing 120 push-ups, I'd be happy if I could do 20... (every few month I pick up some progression / training plan and set out to learn to do them, but I never stick with it). I can imagine your arms and chest are sore after that, plus the pull-ups in addition!
@katharmonic @WhatMeRunning @ddmom0811 @wishiwasarunner @skippygirlsmom @MobyCarp @ctlaws44 @HRKinchen @kgirlhart @garygse @lporter229 (and anyone I forgot) Thanks for the congratulations

Hi!
I am new to this group. My goal is to get back up to running 5+ miles at a time, but my hip has been bothering me the last month or so. I am also tracking other workouts for accountability. Total goal for May = 50 miles.
5/2 = 1 mile + HIIT
5/3 = HIIT
5/4 = 3 miles
5/5 = 1 mile +HIIT
5/8 = HIIT8 -
@orphia Those pictures are awesome! I would love to do something like that some day!
@lporter229 The 5k I ran this weekend was to support our local animal shelter. They also had a "Furry Fun Run" where you could bring your dogs. Only one dog was there this year though. It was kind of sad. I think they have had more in past years. They changed the dates from Labor day weekend to May since that is the local "Frontiers Days" weekend so I think that a lot of people didn't know about it. We debated bringing our dogs for it, but our min pin doesn't always get along with other dogs and so we left them at home. We would have brought them if we had known there wouldn't be many other dogs.
One thing that I thought was a little odd about the race was that they had us run a loop through the cemetery. Has anyone ever run or walked in a cemetery? It was a nice place to run, but it seemed odd to me. There was a part of me that wondered if that was appropriate. I guess a cemetery is basically a park, but I don't know.3 -
05/03-- 2 miles
05/05--2 miles
05/07--3 miles
The weather is getting better! Looking for longer runs!4 -
@orphia Great pics and amazing that you can walk that far!
@haasie99 You say "get back into running" so I'm not sure how much experience you have from before....but I would say respect where your body is now and not try to recreate the past. Intervals are always a great way to get started running, but if you are super out of shape you might want to work on just walking before you even try intervals of running. Take rest days, let your body recover. You can do this and you'll learn lots if you hang around here :-D
May 1 - 30 min walk with 3 hills (am), 30 min light cardio (pm)
May 2 - 30 min walk with 3 hills (am), 30 min strength+plyo workout (pm), 3 mile run (pm)
May 3 - 30 min walk (am)
May 4 - 40 min walk (am), 3 mile run (pm)
May 5 - climbed 4 flights of stairs at hospital :-p stairs KILL ME
May 6 - exhausted
May 7 - no excuses.....
May 8 - 30 min walk with 2 hills (am)
Pretty unhappy with how my Fri-Sun went. I should've done my strength workout Friday evening after my husband's surgery. Didn't. Saturday I was truly exhausted. Sunday, had church then a mid-afternoon graduation party, then decided I didn't feel like breaking a sweat :-/
ETA: I did have back pain yesterday but totally could've done SOMETHING.3 -
@garygse - In 2016, I had an issue with my Garmin 620 losing battery life. It died on a couple of 13 mile runs. The good news is, even when the battery died it seemed to record the run right up to the point the battery bonked. I sent it in for a replacement, but needed a watch *RIGHT NOW* at the time, so I bought a 630 locally.
When the 620 replacement arrived, I ran once with both watches to verify that they were recording a run the same within the tolerance level of "I can't push buttons on both watches simultaneously." Since then, I've just recharged the 620 every week or two and kept it in reserved. I've had no battery problems with the 630, and I like some of the features added since the 620. But if the 630 dies, I have that replacement 620 in reserve so I have a watch while waiting for a better one to arrive in the mail.2 -
@MobyCarp That's good to know that nothing is lost if the battery dies during a run. It was my fault for starting the run with too little juice on it in the first place, but it's all charged back up now. I am tempted by the new 935 though; the battery life on that one is greatly improved - 24 hours on GPS at 1-second sampling. Then I look at the price and I'm no longer quite so tempted.2
-
-
@_nikkiwolf_ thanks! I will check them out! I've decided to commit to a series of 3 progressive 5K, 10K and 21K runs over the course of the rest of the year, so I will need it!2
-
@lporter229 Stella looks awesome in her medal. If I show Macy she'll want one too!
Outside of puking and the pick up full of guys on the highway to Wilmore who tried to get me to get in their truck (apparently shaking a 6 pack of Coors out the passenger side is some sort of amazing come on now- who knew all the things I missed out on! -_- ) @jessicamcb I think this is the mating call of the American Redneck isn't it?
@ereck44 sorry you didn't PR but still a great race. I can't imagine running with that many people. ugh6 -
5/1= 3 mile run + 1 hour kettlebell workout
5/2 = rest day
5/3 = 6 mile run
5/4 = 6 mile run
5/5 = forced rest day due to work schedule
5/6 = 7.5 miles
5/7 = 11 miles

@kgirlhart re: cemetery
Cemeteries were developed by the Victorians as leisure parks. The idea was very much that they be places to wander through and contemplate life or death. Plenty of runners run through cemeteries here, and as long as you are respectful I see no reason not to. I'd probably keep away from the newer burials as those are the ones most likely to have mourners nearby.
I actively seek out cemeteries and churchyard burials to walk through and look at historical graves. Better that than the deceased remain forgotten and only attended by a relative.5 -
Thanks @girlinahat. The cemetery is near my house and in the area where I grew up. I used to go there a lot to look at the graves. There are a lot of interesting headstones from the 1800's and it is a really nice cemetery. There are also lots of roads. It might be a good place to run since there is little traffic and it would be pretty easy to avoid any busy times.0
-
April was 170 miles so I will set my goal for May at 180 miles. I've logged 43 so far this month.5
-
@kgirlhart- I have always wondered about running in cemeteries as well. They always look peaceful, have plenty of paths and are free of traffic. There is a cemetery near the running store I run from . On one of my long runs with the group, I needed to add an extra two miles, so I asked my running partner if he thought running there would be inappropriate and he thought it would be fine so I did. Aside from it being smaller than I realized and getting kind of monotonous, it was quite a nice run. There is a very big cemetery here in the Cincinnati area that has a nighttime 5K near Halloween every year. If they don't view that as disrespectful, then I guess we shouldn't worry.1

5/1 5.5mi 53:51min (interval run)
5/2 5mi 44:35min
5/3 rest
5/4 5mi 44:20min
5/5 4mi 37:27min
5/6 11mi 1:43:14min
5/7 rest <- but I spent 7 hours painting!!!
5/8 7mi 1:06:29min
Did a slow easy 7 miles today. It was 60 degrees and sunny with a little breeze. Really nice running weather! I was exhausted going into the run from staying up until midnight painting my living and dining room. I just wanted to get it done! I'm actually quite sore from painting. I almost took another rest day, but I don't want to skip the longer mileage days since I really need to build up that endurance.
Going to bed early tonight! I've got 5 miles to do tomorrow.2 -
@kgirlhart - Growing up my grandparents lived right across the street from a large cemetery. One of my uncles has been a marathoner since his teens and that was one of his regular training areas when he was high school and college aged while living there. My parents decided to take up running around 1980-81 and they also ran there regularly upon his advice because of the low traffic, quiet, beauty and you could come up with a fair amount of mileage by taking a few various loops through there. So I guess I never realized anyone had an issue running through a cemetery until now. There is a beautiful cemetery about 2 miles from my house but I have never run through it simply due to it being a bit small, and I have a lot of trail and park options within the same distance. I'll admit I have not heard of an event being held at a cemetery before though. For a solo runner though, I don't see how anyone could ever see it as a nuisance. I could understand if someone felt a bit creeped out running through one though, but if it doesn't do that, then I say enjoy the cemetery. They are open to the public.
ETA - I don't know if they ever ran around the cemetery at night. That might stir up some suspicions. And it might add some extra suspense to the Zombies Run app!!2 -
5/1 - rest
5/2 - 6 miles
5/3 - 4.15 miles (track workout)
5/4 - 3 miles recovery
5/5 - rest
5/6 - 6 mile easy run
5/7 - 10 mile taper week long run
5/8 - rest
May Total: 29.15/170
519.15 miles/2,017 miles - goal for the year
So, somehow, I am in my final taper week before the Tinkerbell Half. Totally crept up on me! Went for a rest day on Friday, 6 mile recovery run on Saturday, after my really intense zumba class, and my last long run before the reace yesterday. Went well, although my legs were a little beat up after Saturday.
Creepy running experience of the weekend: On my long run yesterday, while running against traffic, as I always do, there was a guy driving, and he might have been taking pics/filming me As we passed each other I noticed he had his phone held up and out in front of him. Not only did his head turn to follow me, but his phone did as well. I was pretty weirded out for a bit after that. So strange.
In happier news, I was successfully able to sew a string of rice lights into my Tinkerbell tutu yesterday, and today I got my Tinkerbell manicure, so my outfit is officially ready to go! Gonna probably try the whole thing on tonight, and will try to post a pic9 -
I'm a little late to the party, but I'm finally running again. I'm in for 25 miles this month.

Thanks @lporte229 and @WhatMeRunning I don't really see a problem with running at the cemetery. I just never really thought about it and wondered if others would think it inappropriate. I think it will actually be a nice place to run.1
-
@katiejane83 That is really creepy. But I am glad everything is ready for the Tinkerbell half. Can't wait to see the pictures.
2 -
@KatieJane83 I am so excited for you and the Tinkerball half. Although I can't imagine running 13.1 miles in a tutu.
Speaking of HMs, I need to determine when would be the best time to start training. I'm looking at end of November for my first HM, which means I should start training no later than beginning of September, although I think I want to start extending my long runs to greater than 10 miles earlier than that. I'll have to see how the heat of summer affects me... last year I had some trouble running in the heat. BUT, I now have a spiffy new hydration belt so maybe I'll be okay this year.4 -
Oh! And I meant to also add, congrats to everyone who raced this past weekend! I can't even keep track of who did what, but I read some amazingly awesome race reports! Kudos to all of you!!!1

Finally -.
Race report. Sorry for the length, the images, and my bra.
The event was a bit of a weekend thing – I arrived lunchtime ish on the Saturday, as really there was no point just hanging around, put up my tent and went to offer to help the organisers. I ended up being put on the finish line, and as there were in theory 5 races going on at once, it was a bit of a challenge. The race was a 12 hour lapped race – you could do as many laps as you like, solo, or in teams of 2, 3 or 4. And then there were the people gunning for the 50 miler. So a runner comes in, looking like they have had enough, and once they’ve made the final decision, off comes the timing chip, their name is marked off and they get the relevant medal – a giant of a thing, shaped like an ox’s face, beautifully coloured, and with dangly skulls denoting whether they were in a team or solo. The 50 miler was a whopper of a medal, and they got a t-shirt as well. I think I ended up helping for about 6 hours before I finally had to stop for food and a sit down!!
Following the 12 hour race was a night-time 10k. dressing up was quite a thing so many people were wrapped in lights, which was a sight coming through the fields!! I had to head for bed before the final finishers came in.
A COLD night in the tent. Not sure if it was that, general hard ground or me worrying about the HM but I slept badly. Got ready and headed to the start where the morning 10k race was taking place. Some entrants were doing all FOUR races over the weekend. There is only one word for them – nutters.
And then we were off. I kept near the back, knowing that’s pretty much where I’d stay. Happy with a slow start. The first couple of miles were a killer, even on a gentle downhill, my legs did NOT want to work and I vaguely worried that I wouldn’t make it to the end. But then I remembered that I ALWAYS struggle the first couple of miles on any run, so stopped worrying. We hit the first of several evil hills at about mile 2, but that was good in a way, as it meant a change to hiking muscles and a walk up it. I’d told myself to walk up all of the hills during this race. I don’t think I saw anyone running at this point. Then there was a mad dash down to the bottom, I passed several people at this point, mostly I was waving my arms and shrieking like a small child. And bouncing my tutu.
There was an aid station at about mile 4, but I didn’t want anything – I had a vest with electrolytes and that was enough for now. But I did change my top. By that I mean I took my top off and did the rest in my sports bra. I mean, I was wearing a tutu and skull leggings, I couldn’t lose any MORE dignity!.
Looked at my watch at mile 6 and realised we’d been out over an hour and a half. But mile six was possibly the worst of the hills. 360ft of elevation in under a mile. Seriously, NO ONE was running these…..The presence of paragliders in front of us should have been dire warning enough.
The next three miles were fairly flat and I was actually feeling quite good by this point. I was enjoying myself, taking some photos, and settling into a good running gait (I won’t say pace, pace and me don’t really go together). The sun had come out too, which I wasn’t expecting. Sun puts such a shine on sheep, and sweat.
Mile 9 saw us reach the Promised Land, the infamous Lovestation, where I got a lipstick laden kiss on the cheek, and a shot of cherry vodka. I KID YOU NOT. It was that or the cider. Water tastes boring after that. Stocked up on chocolate brownie pieces, cocktail sausages and slices of orange, but managed to tear myself away from staying too long – was still feeling good and didn’t want to waste it.
Miles 9-11 were nothingness. I found myself looking for a suitable tree for a bladder moment, but it was all a bit exposed. It was relatively flat track here and I actually found myself hoping for another hill. Am I mad? Beautiful woodlands distracted me, full of bluebells and more wild garlic that the eye could see. Does the smell of garlic help you be a faster runner?
Then I started to flag. I think I was bored with the flat, but there were some stern conversations with my legs which went something on the lines of ‘MOVE!’
‘I don’t want to’
‘MOVE and you’ll get to the end quicker’
‘grumble grumble’
I had a brief moment where I toyed with the idea of trying to get under 3 hours, but then realised that 2 plus miles in less than 20 minutes wasn’t realistic. Plod on from this point on. No more nasty hills, just a gentle plod upwards. And then I saw it – what I thought was the finish tent. And from nowhere came my sprint finish. Except it WASN’T the finish line, but the car park, somewhat further away than the finish. And now I was approaching the finish line, looking like a sprint finish but my legs were spent. Rather than lose ALL dignity by slowing to a walk, I skipped. Yes, me and my tutu SKIPPED towards the end. 3hours and 7 sweaty minutes or something. A giant medal and a t-shirt greeted me. All I wanted was a beer and my bed. But first I had to give my specially picked posy of flowers to the Race Director. Pretty pretty pretty and smelly wild garlic. He didn’t want them……
I am never running again.

5/1: 3 miles
5/2: 4 miles
5/3: 4 miles
5/4: 3 miles
5/5: 3.8 miles
5/6: 5 trail miles
5/7: Begrudingly a rest day
5/8: Rest day again
I got in for a chiro appointment today and I feel so much better. My pelvis was totally off-kilter and my muscles were really tight, so we did ~20 mins of electrical stim and then she cracked my back real good. I can bend and sit and do all the things now! My glutes are a bit tight yet from the whole pelvic shift, so I am going to take tonight off running but hopefully I'll be back at it tomorrow evening and feeling aligned and fabulous!
Upcoming Races
5/14: Delaware Marathon Running Festival HM
7/1: Finger Lake Fifties 50k (trail)
10/8: Steamtown Marathon (BQ Attempt #3)

@girlinahat Lovely race report! Sounds like it was a great time!! Congratulations! Too cute!0
-
Thanks @lporte229 and @WhatMeRunning I don't really see a problem with running at the cemetery. I just never really thought about it and wondered if others would think it inappropriate. I think it will actually be a nice place to run.
@kgirlhart - I've been on group runs where the leader has taken us through small cemeteries, and no one seems to think that odd. But then, I'm local to the Flower City Half Marathon, which has about 2 miles of the route in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The cemetery has the toughest hills of the route, and in case you aren't looking the race literature tells you that you go right past Susan B. Anthony's grave.
The part in the cemetery is a bit confusing, so the USATF Certification Map for Flower City breaks out the cemetery detail. It's traditional for preview runs that at least one group takes a wrong turn and wanders around parts of the cemetery that aren't on the course; but on race day there are road marshalls so that isn't a problem.0 -
@girlinahat "I am never running again." LOL... oh, you will. You know you will.2
-
@girlinahat any race report that starts "sorry for my bra" is one I need to read ha ha! Great report, loved the photos, you skipping is the all time best! super race!2
