Congrats on the race @snowyne!
@_nikkiwolf_ - Good to hear the knee is better and you seem well prepared to handle things on race day. The jacket sounds like a necessity, hope you like it. Nice diary summary!
Congrats on the amazing race @kgirlhart! A 1st AG award!! You are killing it already!!
@nFoooo - 4k is better than zero. Way to go!
@garygse - I love The Oatmeal and particularly that one about running! I actually bought the book too. It is identical to the strip but wanted to be able to leave it lying around to see if anyone else started reading it. I eagerly await the day I run across a vending machine with that magical purple drink!

Fabulous day for a run - love the scent of honeysuckle in the air right now. So I went 6 instead of 5 miles - but left plenty in the tank since it is supposed to be recovery.

I've got a new marathon PR!! Finished in 4:28:00 , 2 min faster than my 4:30:00 goal time and more than 11min faster than my last marathon.
I'm too tired now to write too much about the race - maybe later tonight or tomorrow... Just a comment on my left knee, since I told you all how worried I was about it: it gave me a good scare 1.75km into the race - it felt like something locked up on the inside of the knee. I've never had that happen before, and it HURT. I was nearly crying, also because I didn't want to have to quit the race so early. But it was a different pain that what I had last week, so I felt justified in trying to "run it off". That stubbornness payed off - after 400m of limping along with gritted teeth, if suddenly got better.
After that weird pain I still had some faint twinges on and off for the next 10km (or maybe 15? can't remember exactly), then it went away. 20km were perfectly fine, then it hurt a bit on the longest & steepest downhill (around 33 to 35km), but back on flatter ground the pain disappeared again. From then on the knee stayed pain-free except for the last one or two kilometres. But that was when the top of my right foot and the bottom of my left foot and my right calf and right hamstring also all started screaming at me, so I'll write it off as general end-of-the-marathon aches. The same happened in my first marathon last year, so I was actually already expecting the final minutes to hurt. Right now, (after a hot shower and food and three hours rest and a hot bath and more food) the only thing that still hurts are my feet, my legs are fine, including the knee.
Still, I should probably take a rest day tomorrow

Congratulations @_nikkiwolf_ ! Way to go on the PR time! Glad your knee pain went away, and hope all is well there. More hot showers, rest and food sounds like the way to go. Awesome job.1

Ran my 3rd Flying Pig Marathon today. 43 miles for the week. I pace the 4:55 group in Cleveland in 2 weeks.11
-
5/1= 3 mile run + 1 hour kettlebell workout
5/2 = rest day
5/3 = 6 mile run
5/4 = 6 mile run
5/5 = forced rest day due to work schedule
5/6 = 7.5 miles
5/7 = 11 miles
Ran with a running group again this morning They always do a run/walk combo training thing on long run Sundays. It is slower than I am used to but its nice having a group of ladies to chat with.
I know I am just being silly -- for some reason it always feels like I am cheating when I do the run/walk thing vs. run the whole thing at an easy pace.
May Goal 33.5/125 miles3 -
Congrats @_nikkiwolf_ on the PR!! Hope that knee pain is gone.
Congrats @KeepRunningFatboy on making pigs fly!3 -
Hi there, I'm a total beginner. ☺️ Haven't been running for ages and just started again. Longest run I've done was a 10k (maybe 5 years ago?) and I hope to do a 21k at the end of the year. Been looking out for encouragement buddies and training programmes for beginners. Sorry for the noob-ness.12
-
@skippygirlsmom - such a cute picture of you and Skip! Congratulations!
@shanaber I started cycling after I had been running about a year and I had so many IT issues when I first started. Now I can do both but it took a while.
@_nikkiwolf_ -congratulations!!!
@WhatMeRunning - I hadn't logged in here for several days and so I started reading the posts where you mentioned the SF hm and I was thinking YES he needs to sign up! Then was happy to see you did! Hope your better half took it well! I ran in SF in 2015 and I loved it! The temps! There were hills though!
Two days of cycling and rested Friday. So back to running tomorrow!3 -
@_nikkiwolf_ - Fabulous job on the Marathon PR!!
@claireariela - Welcome- there are others that will have more expert advice on getting started, but I usually recommend getting fitted at a running store for the right pair of running shoes for you and then starting with somethink like Couch to 5k app if it has been 5 years since you ran.2 -
@_nikkiwolf_ congrats on the PR. Glad the knee didn't end your day and you were able to work through it.
@ddmom0811 thank you1 -
@_nikkiwolf_ - Congratulations on a well run marathon and a PR! And congratulations on the understatement of the day: "Still, I should probably take a rest day tomorrow" LOL5
-
@MNLittleFinn -can you post a link to your training thread? I had seen it but not bookmarked it and would be nice to read through.
My first Half Marathon today. I'll do a race report (was mentally writing it in the car on the way home) soon, but for now I'm going to leave you with this picture. It explains why I'm so tired. (I WAS originally planning on signing up for a flattish half.....)

5/5 – rest day
5/6 – 11.23 loosely paced run
5/7 – 11.08 easy with fast finish
May total to date – 42.22
Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Build base. 5/28, start training plan toward MVP Rochester Marathon.
Today's notes – Showers this morning, and still threatening a bit at 2 PM. I got spooked by the porch thermometer saying 43º F (6º C) and 12 mph wind, and wore light tights and a jacket over a long sleeve tech shirt. I got away with the tights, though I would also have been okay in shorts; in hindsight, I should have just worn two layers of long sleeve tech shirts. Oh, well. It only felt really too warm when I was eastbound in sheltered areas.
Ran a familiar 10 mile route with hills, with some modifications to add distance. A bit past mile 4, I normally turn right on Erie Station Rd and miss the last part of the hill going up Middle Rd. Today I knew I wanted to add a bit of distance, so what the heck. Ran to the crest of the hill, a stretch of road I've seen many times but never run. Then came back down. That added maybe a third of a mile, and another segment of good practice for the drop at Lower Newton Falls. About half of it was steeper than the rest of the hill that I've run many times. Got through all the significant hills in about 9 miles. At mile 10, I noticed my pace had crept to MP. Hmm. Must be getting tired, and I know it's close to home. Let myself keep running MP till the next to last fire hydrant before my driveway, then ran a stride (~200 m) to finish. Look at the stats, and it looks like 9 easy miles, 2 miles of MP, and finish with a stride. Garmin says the pace on that tag end 0.08 mile was 5:53. Yeah, I was trying to run fast; but I find it hard to believe I had a sub-6 pace left after running 11 miles. More likely it was somewhere in the 6:15 to 6:30 range and there's a GPS inaccuracy.
Even though I was a little bit overdressed, it felt good to just go out and run 11 miles. No complaints from any part of the running chain. I think I can say that I managed to recover from Boston in about 3 weeks. I will not be afraid to do whatever speed workout Coach assigns on Tuesday.

@girlinahat http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10497893/training-for-my-first-marathon/p1 I update at least once a week, on Sunday (last day of the training week) and have been writing updates on my long runs on Saturdays too.3

5/1: 3 miles
5/2: 4 miles
5/3: 4 miles
5/4: 3 miles
5/5: 3.8 miles
5/6: 5 trail miles
5/7: Begrudingly: a rest day
I was supposed to do 10-12 miles this morning, but I decided to take the day off instead for two reasons. 1) I was at a party until about 3 am last night, so meeting my run group at 7 would have been awful. 2) My back felt better last night after lots of laying about in bed and ibuprofen, so I continued with ibuprofen today and more laying around. I did a bit of cooking, some laundry, and a bit of cleaning, with lots of TV in bed in between. And my back does feel much better now. I'm just bothered by the fact that I can't tell if the discomfort is from continued misalignment with my SI joint or from muscular tightness from having been misaligned for two weeks prior to last Thursday. We'll see how I feel tomorrow morning and I'll have to take it day by day.
Upcoming Races
5/14: Delaware Marathon Running Festival HM
7/1: Finger Lake Fifties 50k (trail)
10/8: Steamtown Marathon (BQ Attempt #3)

Great racing @_nikkiwolf_ @KeepRunningFatboy @girlinahat !!!!
Hope the knee's alright @_nikkiwolf_ You're stronger than me. If that happened to me I would have shut it down.
I'm not very diligent on posting on here. Basically I got 28.7 miles this week. I'm shooting for 100 miles this month.
I also got some new shoes, another pair of Guide 10's. I tried a couple other pair on but I'm limited because I have a wide 4E foot so I stuck to my same shoe. They felt great cushion wise but stiff, like my feet were slapping the road.
I pushed myself too hard today with too many tacos on my stomach and paid for it. Seems like puking is a theme today @JessicaMcB. Other than that the run felt good!4 -
5/1 - 4.6 run + 4.8 walk
5/2 - 1.0 run + 7.1 walk
5/3 - 5.1 run + 3.9 walk
5/4 - 0.0 run + 5.1 walk
5/5 - 5.2 run + 4.8 walk
5/6 - 5.1 run + 1.8 walk
5/7 - 0.5 run + 5.6 walk
Totals so far - 21.5 run + 33.1 walk = 54.6 miles
I'm not entirely sure how to classify today's excursion. It's was primarily walking but I decided to throw some strides in here and there. Basically just short distances at a high speed (for me). Probably more than a half mile cumulative but I don't know for sure. It was a fun workout though and felt really good.
I also scouted out a new route which turned out to be 6.1 miles. I need to figure out how to add in another 0.1 mile to get 10k, LOL.3 -

Outside of puking and the pick up full of guys on the highway to Wilmore who tried to get me to get in their truck (apparently shaking a 6 pack of Coors out the passenger side is some sort of amazing come on now- who knew all the things I missed out on! -_- ) it was great actually! Really good weather, I think I've found all the Body Glide spots in the gear I'm wearing for RDM, my Playlist pumped out a lot of Great Big Sea!Great racing @_nikkiwolf_ @KeepRunningFatboy @girlinahat !!!!

I love the Guide 10's personally! Kinvara is not the shoe for me and that becomes more apparent all the time. At least tacos were probably worth it? Walden Farm is not worth it...ever...100% chance I threw it in the trash when I got home1 -
@snowyne and @kgirlhart - Congrats on great races! And @_nikkiwolf_ - Congrats on the new PR!

Another TM run tonight after a couple of forced rest days. Nothing noteworthy to report; just continuing to work on endurance. Have a busy day again tomorrow, but hope to run again in the evening.

I wasn't able to get out early today so it was 90°F when I ran. It wasn't too bad though. There was a nice 8 mph breeze and I stuck to a pretty shady route so I enjoyed it.
Congrats on the marathon PR @_nikkiwolf_ I hope your knee is 100% soon.
@kristinegift I hope your back issue gets resolved soon.
@girlinahat I'm looking forward to reading your race report.
It sounds like almost everyone had a great weekend of running. Except for the vomiting @jessicaMcb that kind of sucks.

Is that on the "Mapmyrun" app? I've been looking for a good training programme to train for a run-walk 21k by Nov (thought that was the most realistic target). Does anyone have any suggestions?0 -
