@whatmerunning yeah on the free race!
@kristinegift you just gave me a new appreciation for Nunn
@kgirlhart I swore I could never run without music until my ipod died in the freezing cold and I had to. Now I seldom run with it. Also many races around here don’t allow it. I’m good with it too because now I chat with people around me during a race instead of listening to my music.
@autumnblade75 concentrate on yourself and we’ll be here when you are ready to come back
@elise4270 so close!

May Running Challenge
Goal: 100 km
Done: 3/100
6/5/17 circuit training+walk7 km
5/5/17 3 km2 -
May Running Totals (miles)
5/1 – 5.16 easy
5/2 – 6.67 easy
5/3 – rest day
5/4 – 8.08 easy
5/5 – rest day
5/6 – 11.23 loosely paced run
May total to date – 31.14
Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Build base. 5/28, start training plan toward MVP Rochester Marathon.
Today's notes – Right now I'm about at the inflection point between recovery and base building. Today's paced run distances were 10, 12, 20, and 22 miles. Bearing in mind that I might be pacing 22 miles for a couple young ladies training for Buffalo, I took yesterday as a rest day. Then my 8:00 pace group didn't show up this morning. I ended up running to a nominal 8:30 target with Jeff, an old running buddy of mine. We didn't hold strictly to pace target. I tended to go a bit faster, he didn't complain, I'd slow down when I noticed, he called for 3 walking breaks, I walked with him.
Temp was about 48º F (9º C), with mist or drizzle. That was an improvement from the forecast, which had called for showers or rain during the run. The water level in Lake Ontario is high, but we managed the run out to the end of the pier at the mouth of the Genesee River because the wind was negligible. Then the wind picked up a bit on our way back. Jeff said back to base was enough for him, so I quit after this run, modified to chop a bit of distance out of the 12 mile route. Jeff did an OCD circuit of Ontario Beach Park to get his 12 miles in.
After 11 miles of good conversation, I didn't feel like running alone in the drizzle. So I called it enough at 11.23 miles. If I'd known the long run would be this short, I would have run 4 or 5 miles yesterday. Oh, well. I had thought maybe 6 or 7 miles tomorrow depending on how I felt after 20 or 22 today; maybe 10 or 11 tomorrow, depending on how I feel and how nice the weather is.
As Jeff and I ran and chatted about our impressions of Boston (2014 and 2016 for Jeff, 2016 and 2017 for me) and the various mistakes we had made running marathons and what we learned from them, I realized I have become one of the repeat marathon runners I used to be in awe of. Symptoms: Ability to quit 4 miles into a 6 mile run 2 weeks ago. Ability to say 11 miles is enough today. Lack of worry about building base miles toward the next training cycle. Attention to what my body needs *right now* while trusting I'll be able to get through the next training cycle. Confidence that it's okay to quit at 11 miles, because I have nothing to prove. If there had been someone who needed a pacer for 22 miles, I would have run with them; but as things are, 11 is enough.
Jeff had also noticed this. He was particularly impressed that I was able to quit early two weeks ago. "You never would have done that before," he said. No, I wouldn't have. But now, my major goal is avoiding injury. If I can achieve that, the other goals will fall into place.

Finished my Half today and somehow managed to PR it, despite only getting in 2 runs that totaled about 8 miles in the 2 weeks since my Marathon. I am pretty pleased - 1:52:53.

Today's 11 miles went great! The weather was great 55-60 degrees, sunny, and breezy. I ran the entire time, I barely even had to paused at traffic lights - it seemed like destiny
After last weeks terrible long run in the heat, today was such a relief. It let me know I can run the distance, just not in the heat!6 -
@zdyb23456 awesome running!0
-
@MNLittleFinn - fabulous run - you are going to be really well prepared for that first marathon!
@zdyb23456 - Love it when everything falls into place with the world during a run!
@WhatMeRunning - So, is your company hiring??? Love that you are getting to add on that Half. Sounds like a great time.4 -
5/1: 3 miles
5/2: 4 miles
5/3: 4 miles
5/4: 3 miles
5/5: 3.8 miles
5/6: 5 trail miles
Today was supposed to be 8-10 trail miles, and I was really excited to get out and get muddy after the rain yesterday, but my back had other plans. I woke up this morning with my back feeling great. Then I decided to clean a bit before meeting my friend at 10 at the trail. I bent over to scoot a laundry basket and my back said, "NOPE!" And now it's worse than it was before. I went for the run anyway because it felt better with movement (sitting is the worst), and the pain almost totally went away during the hour-fifteen I was out running. But almost as soon as we stopped, the muscles in the lower back tightened back up and haven't really eased up since. I can't even find a 100% comfortable position to lay down in. I'm going to have to go back to the chiropractor ASAP on Monday, I think. There's no way I can make it 5 days until my scheduled appointment with the way I feel now.
Upcoming Races
5/14: Delaware Marathon Running Festival HM
7/1: Finger Lake Fifties 50k (trail)
10/8: Steamtown Marathon (BQ Attempt #3)

Ran my first race today! It was raining but no matter -- it was still super fun! I finished it in 31:28. Since I'm 45 & I'd never run a mile in my entire life until 5 months ago, I am very happy with that. Will definitely be doing more races in the future!11 -
@snowyne awesome race! You've made HUGE progress from never having run to where you are today!1
-
@MNLittleFinn -- Thank you!! Love the support that exists here. So uplifting!1
-
@WhatMeRunning Wow, I'd love it if somebody else would pay for my race fees and part of the travel. With an offer like that, you just HAD to sign up!
@MNLittleFinn 20miles, awesome!
@wishiwasarunner Congratulations on your new half marathon PR
@kgirlhart For me, it depends on the race. For a short race I would be fine without, for a longer one I prefer to have music. Unless there is enough entertainment around - I ran a 20k in April that was entirely inside a city, with lots of spectators and live bands or DJs every few kilometers, for that one I didn't take my headphones. I've done other half marathons were long stretches of the course are outside the city, where I might end up running for half an hour along a road with no more distractions than a few runners a ways in front of me, those times I was glad for he distraction. But make sure you turn it up so loud that you can't hear a car or another runner behind you - I've seen people do that, it's never a good idea...
@skippygirlsmom Sounds like Skip and you both had a great race day today!
@katiejane83 I like virtual races that are accompanied by some kind of story or event, that makes it feel more like a "real" race to me. I did three of the zombies run virtual races and liked them a lot.
The Wings for Life World Run has a virtual option as well - but this years event is already tomorrow, so your friend would have to sign up fast
I'm thinking about doing the Celeb Chase next - 30GBP isn't cheap for a vitrual race, but you get a shirt and a medal, and 22GBP of the entry fee go to a charity.

Alright, so I've been good and only did a bit of yoga and cycling this week, but not a single run since Monday! Except for really short things like running from the car to the house to get out of the rain. I think while my left knee might not be 100% "good as new", it's still a lot better than a week ago. With some KT tape and a bit of caution, I hope it'll be fine tomorrow. I'm not going to do anything stupid like taking pain killers before the race - in case it hurts too much, I'll just have to take a bus or cab back to the car... I already packed some emergency money, but I really hope I won't need it!
This afternoon I went to the marathon expo to collecte my bib, and bought a new light running jacket. I know you aren't supposed to wear anything new on race day, but the zipper of my old jacket broke two weeks ago; and of course the weather took a turn for the worse this week. In the predicted 10 to 14°C (50-57F) with non-stop rain, I would like to have a jacket I can zip up.
At least the carb loading went smoothly450g of carbs were the goal, and I managed that. The summary in my food diary looks quite scary!

@MNLittleFinn -- Thank you!! Love the support that exists here. So uplifting!
That's my favorite part. This group is all support.... and putting me in my place when I need it.... but all to help improve as a runner.
@_nikkiwolf_ nice food diary for the day......LOL, you've got to love carbo loading.2 -
@snowyne- That is an awesome pace! You should be very proud! I ran my first 5K 2 years ago at about the same age and finished in 32 minutes. Not that it means much, but you already have me beat, lol. And I am sure you are feeling much better from the training - wins all the way around!4
