80 of 60 miles
Okay this race HATES me. Skip and I ran the Cotton Row 10K today, they also have a 5K and 1 mile fun run. It has probably the biggest participation of any race here and if you run here you MUST do Cotton Row at least once. It also has the hill from HELL!! Seriously watch this video, the hill is at mile 3https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWQUMsVmxgw
Elevation:
Anyway last year I just barely made it to mile 2 and I thought it was a fluke, no same thing this year. My legs felt like *kitten* from the start. The first 3 miles is mostly uphill long slow upgrades and then downhill for the most part after "the hill". I pretty much ran/walked - this race is the only one I've ever done this. My time was horrible 1:23.39 like 25 mins slower than my 10K PR. I finished 1713 out of I think ~1900 maybe (final results are not posted). Last year I thought the EMTs were going to have to take me to the hospital, this year I felt okay except my legs were tired. I'm not going to be too hard on myself, since being hurt I've only run 6 miles a couple of times. Oh well NEXT YEAR!!
Skip on the other hand killed her race. She finished 3rd in her AG, which as @stoshew71 can tell you is a BIG deal in this race. She was 455 overall and finally won herself a medal in this race. She PR'd at 54:04. She said she had to stop at the top of the hill because her heart was pounding so much, so she might have cracked the 54 min if she didn't.
@stoshew71 I thought I heard you yell at me, if you did thanks!!

@skippygirlsmom That course looks nasty! You both did great! Tell Skip congrats!0

1.3 more miles until I reach 100 miles! Yay!
Just a short recovery walk today. My back was stiff, not sure why. But it was a nice day and my boyfriend came with me. Too bad he's not a runner, would love to have someone to run with.5 -
Well, I'm not sure about that pain @RespectTheKitty. I was thinking a strained muscle, but that position is a bit odd. Hope it clears right up!
@skippygirlsmom - Long, slow uphill grades are my nemesis!! At least you finished! And congrats to Skip!1 -
@RespectTheKitty could the abdominal pain be gallbladder?0
-
@whatmerunning and @MNLittleFinn thank you! It really is a tough course and wants to kill me haha0
-
@RespectTheKitty - have you had this pain before or is it new - it sounded like you thought it only came on whilst running?
I find I get pain along that line (just below the ribcage) when I get IBS cramps, but I have also had it from disordered breathing (I noticed something similar after scuba diving). You said you drank lots of fluids so it may be associated with that.0 -

Ran with my husband this morning. My hip is in a lot of pain, but I'm trying a new pair of sneakers. Hoka Bondi 5s. They are so cushiony! I hope it works. I was able to pick up the pace after the first mile and my last mile was just under 9 min pace. The sun was shining and it was warm, but not terribly humid.
Have 4 miles to run tomorrow.3 -
I had a pretty good run today and unless something strange happens tomorrow I should make my goal. At one point I actually had that feeling of just not wanting to stop! It has been a while... It was a little warm again 72-73F and I think Hobbes was tired and overheating even though I was trying to stay on the dirt paths and away from the pavement. When I stopped in the bathroom he flopped on the floor and refused to get up again. I let him rest a bit before we headed slowly home. He does seem to be fine now!
@girlinahat - love the pictures and I would not be able to resist going for a swim there either!
@garygse - if I had that nearby to run, I wouldn't want to run anywhere else!
@skippygirlsmom - you did awesome on that tough course!! Next year when you are healthy and have been training for that hill you will come back and kill it! Tell Skippygirl congratulations! She looks so cute in that picture!
@HonuNui - all signed up for the virtual race but will be making mai tais and pretending I am in Hawaii with you!
I think we should plan to repost about the race every couple of weeks as a reminder to others and newbies who join here and might be interested. What do you all think?

I make a note of my time for the mileage I run to keep track of my run times, But I always plan out routes so I have at least a half mile cool down walk.
I can't even stop Runkeeper until it hits :30 or :00 seconds. I will keep walking until it happens.3 -
5/26-2.4 hot, and poor food choices made for sucky run
5/29- BOLDER BOULDER!!!! 2nd ever 10K - and the first one was so terrible it probably doesn't count.
To quote an unknown somebody else- me and 50,000 of your closest friends. - After spending the rest of the day elbow to elbow with folks trying to get around- I believe "closest" was a reference to proximity- yeesh, definitely need to recover from an introvert's hangover.
There was something for everybody, dinosaurs, beer, bacon, slip n slides and swings-all on the course that was.
1:06:43 which is far better than I expected. I even beat my running buddy- which doesn't happen usually unless she has a stroller.... I started off WAY too fast. Like I thought I started off ok, until strava kept giving me 10minute mile splits. I was on pace to match my best 5k time for the first 2 miles or so, and then I finally got my pace back where it needed to be to not die.
It felt good really. Which gives me hope for next week's half.

@hanlonsk great run/race!0

Am I the only one waiting impatiently for the June challenge to get posted???? Despite there being 2 days left in the month and having not met my goal yet.2
-
Thanks @shanaber I had already checked the results and knew she placed 3rd. She was over the moon excited. She said "my 25th medal" ha ha! but who's counting right ha ha4
-
Nice race @hanlonsk ! Congrats!
Great job to Skip on her race - impressive, and good for you @skippygirlsmom on that challenging course that hates you. That hill! Must revenge!

Got a dog walk in this morning before it started to really rain, then waited it out to run later. Finally cleared off and was pretty nice out, if a little humid. Had another easy 30 minutes. Have to say that I've enjoyed this week of taking it easy after my HM last Sunday. Tomorrow starts my new season of the marathon/half marathon training group so I will be gearing back up. I'm training for another half in the fall. I feel encouraged that I can really improve with how far I've come in the last year and just coming off a much more successful half than the one I trained for last fall.
The conversation a few pages back has me thinking about whether the half is the longest distance I want to do. I think I'll see how this training season goes. Right now I think I just want to do a few HM a year, with some destination races for fun. But the back of mind says wouldn't it be something to do a full marathon next year for my 50th birthday? Yes, it would. But the front of my mind (stupid executive function) says I don't really want to TRAIN for a full.
Hope you have all had a good long weekend, and hope it's a good week going into June!3 -
So after sometime off, would you reset your PR's? I worked so hard to get them where they are, but currently I can't even come close.
I think resetting them will offer positive feedback when I do improve. Currently Garmin says I basically suck compared to most female runners in my age group. Ya, that's because most of them aren't recovering and arent having an issue with arm fat chaffe
Guess I can note them in my training log and hit reset. What do you think? Have you hit reset before?0 -

Happy Memorial Day! Hope you all are enjoying the long weekend. I got in 4 recovery miles today. Other than directly after the race, I really haven't been sore after the half marathon on Saturday night so I was surprised by how heavy my legs felt during my run. Didn't really worry about it all that much though since today's miles were meant to be easy. A charlie horse overnight Saturday night left my right calf feeling pretty tight yesterday, but I must have done an adequate job with the foam roller because it didn't make a peep on my run today. Today's run brings me past my May mileage goal and also officially kicks off full marathon training!
Something interesting to note: I've been dealing with chronic hives for a long time. I go through periods of time when they're more "dormant" and I can be weaned off medication and then they will return with a vengeance for awhile before they can be controlled with medication. It's just something I've learned to live with. Right now I am going through a "vengeance" period and had a particularly bad episode last night into this morning. The only thing I could think to do to get my mind off the intense itching was to get out for my run. Miraculously, they were almost gone when I got home and have stayed that way since then. I've noticed before that running has helped diminish my hives but thought it was just a coincidence. The weird thing is that everything I've googled has said that exercise usually causes or makes hives worse. Guess I just gotta keep running!5 -
As far as the abdominal pain, it was definitely caused by the running because it stopped as soon as I slowed to a walk. It could have been IBS, as that is something I struggle with occasionally. When I was in the shower after the run, my stomach felt weird, like kind of how it gets when I drink too much on an empty stomach. So I'm thinking I probably drank too much water on an empty stomach. Next time I go for a long run I'll be more careful and see what happens.3

I love that you've all banded together to support @HonuNui and the Melanoma Cure 5k. It's a cause near to my heart and I've love to contribute. I'm not in a position to donate right now, but will definitely be doing so before the race takes place. Thanks @Orphia for setting that up. I've also been a lot more diligent in applying sunscreen and have made a skin check appointment I've been putting off for awhile.
Also, I'm not sure what made me think of this, but I thought I saw some talk of setting up a FB page for this group awhile back when I was skimming the thread. Did something ever get set up?
@juliet3455 With all the comments on your username, I had to backtrack to find your great explanation. I love the meaning behind it...thanks for sharing that!
@girlinahat Great pictures! Looks like you had a fabulous time!
@Elise4270 Saw your comment about ordering more body glide and thought I'd let you know that I have I've had more success with good 'ol vaseline than I ever did with body glide. After running the last 10 miles of my race on Saturday drenched from head to toe, I even had some chafing on my lower back from the band on my shorts...new one for me.
@skippygirlsmom Way to go to the both of you for finishing that tough race and congrats to Skip for the AG placing!
@hanlonsk Great race!

I say reset. You have the old ones noted. Setting new PRs will help motivate you. Having old ones that are "out of your league" will just be a bummer. You're a great runner and you deserve the acknowledgement of those new PRs1
