May total to date – 194.71

Nominal Challenge Goal – 200 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Build base. 5/28, start training plan toward MVP Rochester Marathon.

Today's notes – The idea was 6.5 easy miles, and I went out and ran them. At 4 PM, when it was 80º F (27º C). It wasn't too bad westbound into a brisk wind, but coming back eastbound felt like running in a dead calm and the sweat just poured off me. Welcome to summer. It will get warmer and more humid in the coming months.

Spend about 2 miles contemplating the "Embrace the Suck" meme, but ultimately decided today's run was too good to deserve that. But it was an indicator that there will those days coming.

Great photos @girlinahat! I'm so jealous.
Great run @skippygirlsmom and congrats to Skip! Looks like lots of great runs this weekend. No run for me today. Just a leisurely walk with the dogs. I also think we need to post the link for the melanoma walk periodically. I am planning to sign up, but may need to wait a couple of weeks.

Ran 7.5 KM today, the longest I have ran since I started working out / dieting 40 or so days ago. The best part was how easy it was, I ran at a slower pace than usual (around 6.5 mph) and I feel like I could have kept on going longer but it's late and I have work tomorrow. I definitely discovered the joy of running longer and easier. I still want to focus on my 5K primarily but from what I've read apparently it is best to run longer and easier most of the time and running hard more rarely? I go to the gym 3 times a week and run 3 times a week, I'm thinking of running 1 hard 5K and 2 easier longer runs on the other days.

@JessicaMcB No I won't be going anywhere this weekend as it is my turn for On-Call Emergency coverage for the NW quadrant of AB.
Ironically on Saturday after I had completed (raced) the DHT 10k in GP I was offered a spot in the GC NATS Mountain Madness HM due to an injury. Realistically there was no way I could do a HM on the back end of a tough 10k. We have some crazy runners in our country who did the 10 in GP and then the HM in GC. Looked like fun and good times/conditions based on the pictures.
I was already an alternate for Safety Kayak duties on Sunday for the Mini Du-Athlon we had at Figure 8 so all ready committed. Did you take part in the Mountain Madness event??
Next year I will be placing the Evergreen Trail Trek, Mountain Madness, Yukon HM as priorities on my running/activity plan, so I will probably be in GC/Tumbler Ridge a few times for training runs. Ultimately GC and TR are about the same travel distance for me. We have had some members of our little club say they want to make a Road Trip down to GC and run 1-3 legs of the GCDR ( just for fun ) in mid August. I have never ran through any of the legs. My next focus is the Emperor's Challenge in Tumbler Ridge. Need to do more of our Hills and 25k distances. This week will be a Taper/Recovery week from all the little Nicks I have right now.

A slow and short 5.5 km tonight after the sun set and it started to cool down. I am definitely feeling the effects of all the weekends activities and the Heat Wave we are in right now. So I started out slow and tapered off - the definition of a slow recovery run. Need 17 more to reach my goal.

@Orphia @HonuNui - I don't need more swag, I don't do virtual, and Hawaii is just too far to travel for a 5K, so I didn't join the team. But I had some unspent money in the charity budget, so I sent the team a little closer to its fundraising goal.

    @MobyCarp Thank you. :heart:

Thank you to all the wonderful people here who have so far now raised $446 towards a cure for Melanoma!!!

I'll try to keep posting the link to the MFP Monthly Running Challenge virtual/physical race team:

Since I'm on a roll with team-building, I've created a MFP Monthly Running Challenge Facebook group!

I've made it a secret group, though, so we don't get random people joining it who don't post here, and also so we can keep our running locations, etc private.

You'll have to PM me for the link. I've sent the link to a bunch of you in my friends list. I hope FB lets you join the group if you click on the link I sent. Otherwise, you'll have to PM me your FB page link so I can add you as a friend then add you to the group.

Sorry it has to be this way to keep our privacy.

(Apologies if I don't get you added immediately.)

@girlinahat Fantastic pictures; truly beautiful! But where's your hat?

ha ha. I was wearing a buff but no hat. I have incredibly thick hair so running in a hat in hot weather isn't going to work - I did buy a visor but the peak was stupidly long I rejected it.

Something interesting to note: I've been dealing with chronic hives for a long time. I go through periods of time when they're more "dormant" and I can be weaned off medication and then they will return with a vengeance for awhile before they can be controlled with medication. It's just something I've learned to live with. Right now I am going through a "vengeance" period and had a particularly bad episode last night into this morning. The only thing I could think to do to get my mind off the intense itching was to get out for my run. Miraculously, they were almost gone when I got home and have stayed that way since then. I've noticed before that running has helped diminish my hives but thought it was just a coincidence. The weird thing is that everything I've googled has said that exercise usually causes or makes hives worse. Guess I just gotta keep running!

    Hahaha, that's awesome!

Weird story about hives... Mum started getting hives soon after she married Dad and got pregnant with my older sister in the sixties. She had to take antihistamines when she got hives for years.

The hives went away when Dad died in the late nineties. She now thinks she was allergic to something about Dad!

To quote an unknown somebody else- me and 50,000 of your closest friends. - After spending the rest of the day elbow to elbow with folks trying to get around- I believe "closest" was a reference to proximity- yeesh, definitely need to recover from an introvert's hangover.

apart from this bit it sounds like you had a pretty good race!!!

This is one of the reasons I seek out small trail races - they tend to attract less runners. My recent half marathon had around 400 participants (although there were several races over the weekend so a lot more people milling around).

The conversation a few pages back has me thinking about whether the half is the longest distance I want to do. I think I'll see how this training season goes. Right now I think I just want to do a few HM a year, with some destination races for fun. But the back of mind says wouldn't it be something to do a full marathon next year for my 50th birthday? Yes, it would. But the front of my mind (stupid executive function) says I don't really want to TRAIN for a full.

Hope you have all had a good long weekend, and hope it's a good week going into June!

@katharmonic This was me 12 months ago! A month later I did my first HM, and have since done 13 runs of HM distance or longer, with my longest 30 km on 29 January (though I walked 50 km a few weeks ago).

I turned 50 a few months ago, and a full marathon is on my bucket list for this birth year. Did 25 km on Sunday, and a HM the week before. Just need to get another 30 and then a 35 km done, then pick a date or event for the full. May even just do it around here on my own if I'm feeling in fine fettle.

Once you're fit enough for a long run, it makes sense to keep doing them, and building gradually. At least, to me.

    Nominal mileage goal: 220 Miles.

Today's notes: Today's run was another where my legs felt pretty heavy, despite it being only a 4 miler, probably because Mondays are no longer E runs, but GMP runs. Oh well, got 4.2 done at 9:24 pace with a 151 average HR. I'm super close to my goal for the month, and tomorrow's run should put me over, this will be a HUGE distance mileage PR, something like 20 miles more than my current PR sent last month.

Anyway, not much to report other than there's only 5 more runs til taper!

I hope you are all having a runderful day!

@girlinahat yes, it was a great run for me. And I am much more used to smaller races as well, especially coming from a state where even a "big race" is still pretty small. But the things one does for our friends. And given how accessible that one is from here, it is realistically one of those races a person should see/do at least once.

Next week's half is a small trail race. Like the entire race is capped at about the number I had in my age group yesterday if I were to guess. So it will be a totally different experience of a race.
