Hi guys. Iv got a question, something Iv been sort of fascinated with over the years is the USA. Must come from all the American films iv grown up with, but iv got this notion that America is amazing, is it? I also love the accent it gets me all giddy lol.

What's the difference between the UK and USA? Iv heard Americans are not shy about getting ahead in life and achieving things whereas here in the UK we are taught not to shout about it, keep it on the low down sort of thing. What have you heard about the UK?

Also the whole white picket fence thing, do most Americans view that as a goal? Iv always grown up hearing about this white picket fence. Also hillbillies, who are they ? Are all the stories you hear about them true

Would be great to hear about America from actual Americans. I would love to visit but might never be able to, but hope to in the future

We're mostly fat and rude and a giant political mess.
But we've got really good food here.

Hey now, we aren't all rude, lol. Some of us are rather polite, others, not so much.

I can't disagree with the fat part, though. There's a lot of overweight people and many of them have come to see their size as normal because they are surrounded by other people their size or larger (I was no exception).

We (mostly) love food and doing crazy things just for the hell of it. Lots of us like good food, wine/beer/cider and think the political scene is an absolute travesty.

That thing about guns? Yeah, where I'm originally from? Don't you dare try to take away their shooting implements. They get pretty riled up about it.

The personality thing is different for different people. Some are shy, some are very brazen. All kinds, just like any other place on the planet. It's really the assimilation of a bunch of cultures and not genuinely having one specific culture that makes America different from other places I've lived/visited.

The other thing I particularly love about America (there isn't a lot about here I love anymore) is that you can drive across this country, state to state (and sometimes even in the same state) and the whole landscape changes. We have nearly every type of biome here, including a type of rainforest. Weather is crazy, people talk funny in parts of the country and take forever to talk in others.

As to the whole white picket fence thing? No, we don't all have that stereotype dream in mind as a goal. For some, maybe, but definitely not everyone. Most people I know and live around just want to get by and have some fun while doing it and be secure in the process.

Hillbillies, ah.. super familiar with that term and stereotype since I grew up in Missouri and Arkansas. "They" are usually just a derogatory term used to describe people who are usually living in poverty out in the woods and like to keep to themselves. Most would say uneducated, unsophisticated and possibly more interested in making moonshine than doing much else, but it does have a kind of interesting history (the term, I mean).

Having grown up in the areas mentioned by the Wiki, yes, I can say they exist, but the whole state of Arkansas isn't comprised of them as some Americans would have you believe. :D

I am the hillbilly. Yes, it's all true.

Sounds strikingly similar to the UK, it's very varied here for being such a small island though. You only need to travel a short distance and you find a totally different type of people, different ways of life, accents etc

    And this.

America seems to sell a lot of massive size food portions I tend to think that's in part to blame for the obesity. In the UK we don't have the super super size food portions. In fact they're making foods smaller, difference here is food isn't cheap even for the smaller sizes, I think it's maybe cheaper in US for more food.

I watched a programme about a cafe called 'the heart attack cafe' that was pretty unbelievable

Sorry heart attack grill it's called

Yeah, we do.. but some places are changing. Heart Attack Grill goes out of its way to make the most outlandish, calorie laden items it can think of as a giant *kitten* you to the health conscious and detractors trying to police food. Definitely not something every place serves.

But yeah, the portions in most places are huge, which is why I'm always carrying leftovers home.

I honestly wouldn't mind it if a lot of the dives here caught onto the whole "smaller portions" thing and just let me order what they call "lunch size" portions of their popular items. Some places do, but usually not for dinner.

I'm reading this wiki link, looks like there is a lot of links to Scotland and Ireland very interesting

Well, most of us are descended from people who moved here from across the sea, so it makes sense.

I'm an European living in the US.
Americans are fat and work too much. Life is about having a house and a car you need three jobs to afford. And taking your kids to all kind of sports ever imagined.
But, they give you a ton of food in restaurants, food is cheap and soft pretzels are yummy.
Also hard work is almost always rewarded and everyone gets a fair chance on getting ahead.

    Any American accent lol
A couple months ago I was walking in the city centre here in Glasgow scotland and couldn't remember where a particular burger joint was situated, so I asked a passer by, she was a Canadian and I could have listened to her talk all day lol I'm just a bit mesmerized by it. Definitely due to all the American tv shows/ films iv watched. Are Canadians American? I'm sure they are, yeah

    Yep, America's hat. :p

Edited to add: Uh.. some people have accents, but a lot of Americans don't. I guess maybe we do if you aren't from around here and you hear it. But I insist I don't have one.. my husband definitely does. He sounds like John Wayne lite.

I'm in Oklahoma. We have lots of tornadoes.

I often wonder how you guys live with the threat of those things. If we get a bit windy here it's a big deal but tornados ? Scary. We do suffer a lot of flooding here especially down in England

Midwest gets tornadoes and flooding a lot.
The Gulf gets flooding and hurricanes.
Entire eastern seaboard gets hurricanes and violent storms.
California gets drought and earthquakes, sometimes flooding (like this year).
Northern climes get horrible wind and blizzards/snowstorms.
Alaska gets six feet of snow and earthquakes.
And Hawaii gets gale winds, typhoons, hurricanes and volcanoes.

    Something for everyone!
