If so, you should note that the Fireball does NOT come with a bladder. Never used that one myself, but not having the bladder is a big deal in a hydration pack.
Yes, that one. saw it wasn't included.
Odd, looked at a couple others. I guess that is normal. The only one I ever bought had a bladder with it, and since that seems logical I just assumed they all did. Huh.
Well Nathan is the brand of my hydration belt that I have used for probably 10 years now. So I would definitely buy more of their stuff. I still struggle with the idea of a backpack while running. I know some people do it, but seems like it would be uncomfortable to the extreme.0 -
I have experience with neither, however I am always wary of anything with webbing strapping that is likely to be against my skin. When the bladder is full, there will be enough weight in there for the base of the vest to potentially rub. There is probably a reason a lot of people swear by the Salomon skin vests (I don't have one so can't comment).
For what it's worth - your back will get hot. Depending on the race you may not like the vest.
A vest is better in terms of positioning of stuff. I'm short, it keeps my hips and butt free to move.
There's a temptation to overfill. Depending on your situation a hydration BELT may be better.
Gut feeling - I wouldn't buy either on presumed comfort from the pictures. (Disclaimer - I have had whisky so all purchases are invalid)1 -

Thanks for that great input! I have a belt, and actually don't like it for running, I just came to the conclusion that I don't like things riding on my waist/hips when I run....if that makes sense...which is why I am looking at a vest or pack..... I used to do a decent amount of running carrying a pack (with 25 pounds of rocks in it) so I got used to carrying something on my back...1 -
Yes. I have this one
http://www.mountainhardwear.com/singletrack-race-vestpack-|-073-|-m-l-887487876881.html
It's not perfect. I like that I can put soft flasks in the front in addition to a bladder. And there are other pockets for gels, car keys and my camera when I want to take pics. I've attached elastic to the back for a raincoat and there's room for a picnic lunch too (this all tells you there's too much room)
I love the idea of the salomon because it is super stretchy and there shouldn't be flapping extra fabric. My personal issue is having a very small back but I want to try one for size.

So an observation about my new forerunner 235. It seems to give me far fewer calories than my Fitbit charge HR did. I'm used to large Fitbit adjustments in MFP, but Garmin seems to give me a negative adjustment after adding my "exercise". Overall my calories are much lower now so I'm always in the red - when I complete my diary for the day it tells me I'm going to gain massive calories. Not sure how accurate it is since I'm not gaining weight.
It's not accurate at all. Your best strategy is to ignore how many calories MFP says you need, ignore how many calories Garmin says you burn, and eat what you need to eat to maintain your weight and have good running performance.
The estimates are okay for people who need to lose a lot of weight, as long as they're biased toward a deficit. The closer you get to a desirable weight, the more troublesome the inaccuracies are. For maintenance, the estimates are totally insufficient. Watching trends on the scale, with all the problems of water retention and glycogen bonding and whatever else, is better for weight maintenance that the calories calculated by MFP.1 -
@girlinahat I think I looked at that one actually. I've also been looking at Ultimate Direction.... they have a 30% off sale right now. Their Hardrocker vest looks good, but doesn't come with bottles, their PB Adventure 2.0 looks good also, and comes with bottles... So many good choices!0

So, I'm not a big music person, I like good music, but, I just can't zone out to it, it's more of a background noise, but I like to watch documentaries while I run on the treadmill, it helps me zone out and focus on something while I run other than I'm still running, I dont watch much TV, i like to listen to it, but not to just watch it, well it finally clicked "podcasts" yes. Downloaded an app, and yes, thats what ill be listening to during my marathon, hahaha.3
-
@angmarie28 I am with you. I listen to audio books when I run. Currently listening to the Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson. His books nice and long. 20, 30, some even 50 hours.2
-
@PastorVincent I thought about that, but I don't know, I like radio shows, haha. I also like learning and things that make me think, so podcasts are great1

They are adding disk golf to our remote trails. I was a bit peeved over it. Apparently I'm not the only one. Then we "walked" into his daughter running and we chatted for 45 minutes. Silly girl is the "unfriendly" one our there that won't even nod me back. She apologized. Another Introvert. But this MRC group has helped me deal with my introverted tendencies. No worries fellow runner- we're here to run. Now I will have to try to not get hit with hard *kitten* frisbees zippin' all about. I'll miss my roadrunner friends *meep meep* that are too flighty to indulge the presence frisbee flingin' hippies and thier boisterous offspring.
I'll write a letter. Call some peeps.

@girlinahat Wow! A refrigerated glove box!? Keeps your gloves cool? super fancy!0
-
@MobyCarp Just wondering, what is your opinion on the sophisticated body scales? Are they worth the effort?0
-
@angmarie28 I listen to the actual radio in the car, talk radio. I enjoy it, but it is not as immersive for me (good thing too!) and really my primary goal while running is to forget I am running Everyone has their jam I guess!1

@cburke8909 - I like gadgets that stay close to what is measured. The more software and calculations there are to get to what the gadget reports, the less accurate and useful the report is.
Weigh me, tell me the answer, that's good. Send electricity up one leg and down the other, do a bunch of black box calculations, and tell me a body fat percent . . . that's a garbage number. If I were in weight loss mode and it turns out to be a *consistent* garbage number, the trend might tell me something. But I'm in weight maintenance mode. Looking in the mirror when I'm dehydrated, either I see my abs or I don't. That's about as much as I need to know about how much body fat I have.
My sister has a scale that does BMI (you have to tell it your height), body fat %, and transmits the weight to her computer for tracking. Too much geek work for me, and it has been known to mistake a guest for someone else who has been entered into the system. The most meaningful number it generates is the weight, and I can manually transfer one number from a dumb scale to a spreadsheet once a day.
I also have this silly idea that if I'm going to pay $20 for a scale that just does weight, I'm more likely to get a durable scale that does accurate weight for a long time into the future than if I pay $30 for a scale that has lots of gee-whiz bells and whistles. Give me accuracy and longevity, I can live without the bells and whistles.
If I had unlimited funds and a good place to put it, I'd buy a good balance scale like they have in gyms and doctor's offices. Those suckers are accurate and last forever. Alas, I don't have a good place to put it. If I did, I could probably figure out where the funds would come from.2 -
@cburke8909 I primarily watch three things...
1) Weight. Just the raw number. I am attempting to stay within +/- 3 pounds of my goal weight. I just enter the number off my dumb scale into MFP.
2) Pants size. It should stay stable at this point. Any growth or shrinkage there is a warning.
3) "Net" calories. I am tracking them and watching how the number impacts #1 and #2. It is the only objective measure I have of food in, vs energy out. So no matter how made up the numbers are - they are consistent. So I can make them work out with time. Or so is my theory. This will be my third attempt to stay at goal weight, but the first time I am tracking calories. So we will see.1 -
@cburke8909 I have the Garmin scale. I like it. I get on, it does it's fancy measurements, sends it to Garmin connect for tracking. It is very consistent on those "garbage" numbers.
It always tells me my skeletal mass, bone mas, are rather consistent. Water fluctuates but I don't watch that number much. Maybe I should check it out after a long hot run. Body fat, ya I'm sure that's "garbage", but it is consistent and that's all I want. I like gadgets, I love Garmin as a company and had to get the scale.
But really I don't need it. I did need a scale that will give me the same weight if I step on it 3x and not fluctuate like a moody cat. I do have that with this one.
Like @MobyCarp mentioned it guesses at users, but mine you can tap to scroll through. So if I get on in the afternoon and don't want that number recorded, I can just tap to "unknown". Or just delete it later.

Hi all - in between business trips and hoping to get in enough miles to meet my goal for the month. I have changed my run schedule at the advice of my nutritionist to include an additional rest day. So I am now running M-W-F with a long run over the weekend. For this week at least it fit my work/travel schedule well and I had an amazing run today. The increased calories and timing also seem to be helping with my running and overall energy levels and so far I have not gained. I even lost a pound on this last business trip but I ate well but slept like crap and sat in meetings all day for 3 days. I did eat well - the corporate office has a beautiful new cafeteria that is very reasonably priced so eggs and a biscuit with fruit each day for breakfast and ok, bacon on one day
I am off to Atlanta next week for pretty much the entire week but the hotel has a really nice gym so I will be wrapping up my miles on the treadmill there. Now I am going to get caught up on the 15-20 pages of posts that I am behind!

June 23 – 4.1 miles St. Pete Beach Series, Race #1, 5K, plus warm up
Total: 76.35 miles/100 miles
Whew! What a day! I knew today’s race would be challenging, but I let a few things bother me, which made it even more challenging.
First, we were on the beach, which meant sand and sun and 90°F.
Second, I got new glasses, but I still haven’t picked up sunglass clips that fit over the new glasses. My old ones kept slipping off. I should have worn my contacts and sunglasses.
Third, my ear buds kept falling out.
Fourth, my phone kept acting up. I think I could have run just fine if the music just cut out completely, but it kept beeping and then coming back on then cut out again. It was so distracting that the phone almost ended up in the Gulf!!!
I was definitely not happy with my 32:04 time…until I realized everyone was slower than usual, and I came in 3rd for my AG! I’m almost always 6th or 7th, lol! I was so excited that I signed up for my first half marathon in November! There is seriously something wrong with me!
Upcoming Race:
July 21 - St. Pete Beach Series, Race #2, 5K

10 KM run. Ran my first 3K way too fast (5:45 KM pace) but managed to keep it steady at around 6:00 KM pace for the remaining 7 KM.
Felt quite good, a bit tired towards the end but could have kept going, still had enough energy to do the 4x100m strides I forgot to do Wednesday. (Strides are like a 95% sprint that you ease into, so you don't go all out at the start but ramp up to your top speed).
I think if I wanted to truly respect my easy pace I would have needed to keep a 6:10 pace. I'll try to keep my pace down for tomorrow's long run.
Random trivia : Pre-run weight (after drinking way too much diet soda at McD's) was 203.7 lbs. Post-run weight was 197.6 lbs. My last weigh-in was 203 lbs. Have I broken the 200 lbs? I'll wait and see tommorow upon waking up what my weight will be. It's still nice to see the scale go uner 200, even if it is due to losing a lot of water on the run and because of that I won't log it in. It's only a matter of time till I get there though!

I surprised myself and got up at 5am this morning to run. We are picking up our oldest from her first away camp! It requires us to leave at 7am! I wanted to get my run out of the way since I have a lot of unpacking then repacking to do for our trip to NY this afternoon. We leave early tomorrow morning!
It was a good run. I was out the door by 5:30am - 79 degrees, 75% humidity, and very breezy. I ran without headphones- first time in a long time. It was so quiet and peaceful, just my loud huffing and puffing to break the silence6 -
Forgot to post yesterday, 5 fairly fast miles in the morning.

Humid morning, legs felt tired, I know my hydration has been awful I really need to work on that. Started to rain on and off pretty good at mile 3.5, thank you Lord! It felt good.
Leaving in the morning for Florida for a week of packing up Mom's house and closing on the sale. Going to be a bittersweet week, while I'm glad to sell it, it's the last thing that tied me to her in Florida. Next Saturday Skip and I will drive home a truck of things.
Where in Florida? I'm in St. Pete.0 -
Speaking of running watches, never ask a group of runners the time if you want a quick answer...this morning, someone asked the time, at which point everyone looked at their watch, started pressing buttons to cycle through various data screens, and basically it took us a good while to respond, lol.
Hahaha! I found myself scoping out everyone's watches at the race last night. I still can't decide. Vivoactive HR or Forerunner 235. It'll be a bit longer before I can buy it now. I used part of the money that I had saved for it on the registration fee for my first half marathon. About this time last year I was convinced that I'd never be able to do one. Never Ever!!! Now I'm like, sure, I'll give it a go, lol!4 -
-
I gave in. The Forerunner 235 was 270$ CAD instead of the regular 400$ + on amazon so I bought one. On garmin website they are 450$ CAD.
270 CAD is something like 200-205 USD for my American friends.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm thinking of going with the 235 as well. Is it new or refurbished?0 -

I listen to music for the same reason I always wear a hat and sunglasses when I run. I'm an urban runner surrounded by a quarter of a million of my "closest" friends, and all the traffic and noise to go along with them. My gear is strictly to block all of the auditory and visual noise. I actually listen to classical music when I run, lol! It helps me focus. Yeah, I'm so weird.4 -
midwesterner85 wrote: »**I won't be online to post in this thread again until July! If I finish the HM on Sat., I will meet goal. ETA: It should be 96 miles as of today, not sure why it shows 93 because the ticker even shows 96 when I'm looking at it on the tickerfactory website.
6/1 - 5.20 miles (also starting a diet change to increase carbs slightly)
6/2 - rest
6/3 - 9.00 painful and slow miles in sweltering heat with the sun beating down
6/4 - rest
6/5 - 5.25 miles not as hot as Sat., but still hot (need to stop making excuses for slow pace)
6/6 - 5.37 miles - early am, so started out dark, but nice and cool out
6/7 - 5.00 miles (early am, nice and cool again... had to add some distance to get up to the full 5 miles)
6/8 - 13.18 miles (started out 3am and tired along with GI distress, terrible pace but stuck with it - improved as I got to the last few miles - average total pace 11:13)
6/9 - rest (backpacking in evening, not counting non-running miles)
6/10 - rest (backpacking, not counting non-running miles)
6/11 - rest (backpacking, not counting non-running miles)
6/12 - 6.60 miles, fairly warm, totally new area while traveling for work, slow average pace
6/13 - 6.93 miles, still warm, new area (paved trails mostly today), slow - need to work on that speed
6/14 - 6.12 miles, not quite as warm, but 74% humidity still was tough - still slow
6/15 - rest
6/16 - rest
6/17 - 14.30 miles... hot, slow pace. Stopped and re-filled my water bottle 3 times.
6/18 - rest
6/19 - 6.19 miles - plan was for 7 miles, but got started late because I woke up with low BG (46 mg/dl). Still could have done 7 miles, but ended early because the stuff I ate for the low BG was causing some issues.
6/20 - 6.83 miles. Good pacing, so almost no walking. Still slower than I want, but at least kept pace more even.
6/21 - Unplanned rest day. Plan was for 7 miles on a traveling (driving) day. Fell behind on driving schedule and not feeling well anyway. Stomach upset due to poor nutrition on the road and dehydration (worsened by sickness).
6/22 - 3.07 miles. Got up before sunrise and banged out some miles on the dreadmill. Not enough, so I'm still behind schedule a bit. I need about 2 more miles + the HM on Sat. to reach goal (no running after the HM because I'll be backpacking).
6/22B - 3.03 miles on a trail. Not high quality miles... still nutritional issues.
6/24 - Glacier National Park Half Marathon
6/25 - Rest (Backpack Glacier National Park, not counting non-running miles)
6/26 - Rest (Backpack Glacier National Park, not counting non-running miles)
6/27 - Rest (Backpack Glacier National Park, not counting non-running miles)
6/28 - Rest (Backpack Glacier National Park, not counting non-running miles)
6/29 - Rest (Backpack Glacier National Park, not counting non-running miles)
6/30 - Rest (Backpack Glacier National Park, not counting non-running miles)
I have a weak signal, so maybe this works... No updates on the ticker, but just finished the Glacier National Park Half Marathon with 2:10:07 official chip time. Faster than expected for my first HM.8 -
1:52:50 unofficial time. HM finished 5 minutes ahead of my 30 year old brother.14
