Found this and had to inquire on its validity. If it is true... why do I constantly see women seeking a certain clothing size? Shouldn't you be seeking a store that sells smaller size? (May I suggest GAP based on the pic?)

Yes. I have pants that vary by 2-3 sizes and all fit the same.

Yes that is true. There are some brands that I would have to go to a damn size 15-16 or maybe higher, but others that I can wear an 8 or a 10. I usually just stick to my Levi's and I am currently in a 10.......hoping to get in a 6 before it's over. :-)

Yes, this is true. There is no standard sizing in women's clothing.

Yup, I am a 4 at Banana republic, 4-6 at limited and 6-8 at anthroplogie. The big reason I don't order on line a lot.

Yep. I wear anywhere from an 8-13.
I'm not bothered but sizes anymore, but It used to kill me If I wasn't fitting a 7-8 EVERYWHERE.

I wish they all were all sized the same, though. I hate having to go in a store and take 10 pairs of jeans in the Dressing Room just to find one pair that fits. LOL

I hate vanity sizing. It makes it sooo hard to buy clothes as you can't just grab 'your' size and go

It's ridiculous. Then you throw in stores like Forever 21 that have pant sizes like 26, 27, 31 etc.
I have pants ranging from sizes 0-5(juniors) that fit....

A size 7 and a size 4 are roughly the same size...Odd Numbers are "Junior" sizes, Even Numbers are "Misses/Woman's" sizes. The cut it fuller in the bust and hips for "Misses/Women's"

You are comparing misses sizing to juniors. They are cut differently and sized differently. Anything with an even number is misses or women's and an odd number is junior's. A 7 in junior's is not necessarily in between a misses size 6 and 8. Even so, different brands and styles will still run differently. I usually wear a 0 or 2 in misses, and a junior's 3 or 5.

Seriously? No wonder you all take so long shopping...

You know there have been multiple times I never even tried on my clothes? Just went into the store (grocery store even), grabbed some jeans/khakis/shirts and checked out. Got home. Fit perfect...

True. I wear size 16 in Old Navy, but still 18 or even 20 at other places like Target

True. Huge variance by brand. Designer duds, in particular, tend to have a smaller size number. When I wore a size 12 in Levi's, I also wore a size 4 in Charlotte Ford jeans... both fit. And to make it worse, men's pants are true to size by both waist and inseam, and my hubby can buy clothes without trying them on. UNFAIR!

I understand these words individually but put them together and I'm lost...

Women's clothing is definitely like this, not so much males. Yes many women will seek out that store where they can fit into the smaller size. I often take in 2 sizes with me and do not take it personally if the smaller size does not fit.

The odd /junior sizes is another thing all together, not made for folks with hips and things at all.

Nice of you to seek understanding in this!

I know my size in mens pants, so if I'm in a rush I'll just shop in the mens department. Don't exactly fit 100% properly, but thankfully my work is uber-casual so no one cares

This is true. In the photo she is wearing a 4 (misses size) and then a 7/9 (junior size). That means she is wearing the same size in two photos and one size up in the last photo. There is confusion on sizes when people don't know about the two different sizing charts. But, it's easy to know because the misses is even, and the juniors is odds. They both have size 0, but juniors is smaller than misses (leads to more confusion in mfp conversations).

But, there is still vanity sizing. And places like the Gap/Old Navy are some of the worst in that area. Although J.Crew is even worse. At J.Crew, the 00 is too big for me.

Also sizing charts vary internationally as well.

I was told once that it depends on the cut of course but also I think it is how much and what kind of elastic is in the material now days. In my younger years there was no stretch so most brands fit the same....
  • Isn't it unbelievably annoying????

It's hit and miss even for men's clothes, but it's not as bad as women's. My pants size can differ by an inch between different brands, but not more. Shirts are also just one size apart between stores, never more.

Now, if it's between countries all bets are off, even when they're on the same sizing scale (supposedly).

yup the disadvantages of being a woman I am afraid.

I am an Australian size 10-11 (American 6) and I have this particular pair of skinny jeans (size 11) that fit perfectly but then another pair of size 10 jeans that swim on me!

dont know, I have such a hard time finding jeans that fit me right that i only wear walmarts LEIs
  • Yes, very true, and quite infuriating as well.

I'm aiming for about a size 6-8 jeans, but when I say that, I mean a size 6-8 in a specific brand and cut of jeans. I don't expect that when I get to my goal that I'll be able to go to any store, pick up a size 6 and a size 8 and head to the fitting rooms and have them fit. I've chosen one line to measure by, and when I go from a 12 to a 6 in that line is when I'll consider it a success. I have a feeling I'm not the only one who does this. I know I am losing the volume because when I started out, I was in an 18 and have moved down to a 12 in that line, and when I hold the 18s that I now can't keep up up to the 12s I wear now, the difference is undeniable.

My work trousers are a 16 and they're just starting to get lose, but the work trousers I can't wear any more because they're too big are also labelled as a size 16. Holding them up to one another for size comparison shows how different they really are in size. On the other hand, I have a size 10 in another brand that fits now.
