October 2017 Running Challenge

I haven't yet added up my mileage for October, but I'm guessing it's pretty low as my marathon was right in the middle, so it includes taper and recovery. Yep, just added it up and I'm at 101.7 with just another short run or two before the month is over. Saturday was my last long run before the NYC Marathon and what better way to end this season's marathon training with the first snowfall? It was 30F and a wintry mix was falling from the sky when my alarm went off. I really wanted to roll over and go back to bed, but I ultimately decided to meet the informal off-season long run group at FF. I'm really glad I went as the run turned out to not be so bad after all. The cooler weather was a much welcomed change and we even saw a large buck running along the path about 1.5 miles in. The running store we met at is in a shopping center on the top of a large hill and the running path is at the bottom. Nice to start out, but not always pleasant at the end of a long run when you have to make it back up the hill. Throughout my run, the wintry mix starting changing over to snow and as I was slogging along up the hill at the end, it started snowing huge white snowflakes. That put a smile on my face and helped me finish strong.
As I previously mentioned, the NYC Marathon is next week and I'm a jumbled mess of nervous and excited. This will be my 10th marathon, so I'm not a stranger to that beast but the logistics of this race are like no other. I'm more excited than anything, but am slightly nervous about all the pre-race logistics and how they'll affect my race. Most specifically, the fact that I will be needing to wake up about 6 hours before my 11am start time and what I should eat in the in-between. Also the fact that I'll be traveling to NYC the day before and how I should go about carb loading the day before. My other fear is that my hip will be bothering me as much as it did during the Columbus Marathon a few weeks ago. I felt like I had a sufficient week of recovery and healing afterward (only 7 slow/short miles that week) but last week's runs left my hip and then my shin bugging me a little more than I would like. I know that I can help that with making sure I stay on top of the exercises I should be doing this week, but I hope that's enough. So that, along with sleeping and eating right, will be my main focus this week. Speaking of which, I should probably go do those things.7 -
Whee! I ran 11.3 miles today and hit my goal of 100 miles.... 100.6 to be exact.
And there's still two more running days left. This makes me happy.
Since I had had probably the worst week in a long-*kitten* time, today was basically a "run til you drop" sort of day. I didn't actually drop, but I ran for two solid hours. Haven't had a good two-hour run since the very beginning of the month.
And I'm way behind on posts. I just hope everyone is doing okay and running strong.11 -
Napped a good deal after the race. Improved my 10k time by 7 minutes today. Calf felt great until I decided to sprint to the finish and it seized up again. Hating myself for that moment because it basically means another week of rest. The HM I was planning on is 6 weeks away and I had just finished the 7 week long run in the Hal Higdon Novice 1 HM plan.
Stupid me.5 -

Stupid me.
@JessicaMcB 100k I think you can take at least 1 day off, maybe even 2. The rest of us mere mortals would need a week.0 -
@fitoverfortymom Sorry to hear about your calf but congrats on your 10k improvement and finish. I couldn't even imagine doing 10k at the moment but I do know what it's like to want to push it.0

Got some unexpected news this morning. The friend who said he'd run with me at the HM had a heart attack yesterday! He's 55, never smoked, never drank, and runs 20-30 miles a week. Has done HMs before. They're doing a heart cath on him tomorrow.
I feel rattled!0 -
10/28 - 12.0 miles
45/119 miles
Yesterday’s long run was hard because I have not been getting in my runs in durin g the week due to travel. Since my husband and kids had no where to be yesterday morning, I was able to travel to our local university to run around the lakes. Around the lKez is a total of 6 miles. I did walk from mile 3.5 to mile 5.5 because I made a wrong turn and needed a bathroom and had to walk until I found one and then I finished the last half mile walking. These beauties were on the lake yesterday morning:
No travel this week so no excuses on getting my running done!5 -
@WandaVaughn that is terrible. I hope he will be OK. It's hard to understand why those things happen to people who we perceive as healthy.0
-
-
@WandaVaughn I'm sorry about your buddy! Not that there is a "right" person to suffer heart disease but it seems like more and more it is afflicting the wrong people.
@juliet3455 I know I couldn't do a week if I wasn't injured, I'd go crazy. From the state of my right foot I think I might just hit 10-15k in the morning before we take the kids to the city for their pediatric opthamology appointment.

@WandaVaughn - sorry to hear about your friend. Praying he can recover and can return to running.
@carolineb81 - congrats on finishing two 10K's in two days. Besides just not having the want to, do you have any other reasons why one shouldn't do this? The reason I ask is because one of our local hospitals is having a running weekend that consists of a 5K and kids run on a Saturday and then a 10K and half marathon on Sunday. Seriously considering doing the 5K and 10K.
@JessicaMcB - Awesome doing the 100K! I have to think every time I read yout posts where you mention LSU -that is the abbreviation for our flagship university and I have to remind myself you are talking about the race and not the university!
Question: does anyone that runs marathons or ultras divide up their long runs into two seperate runs and complete them with in twelve hours of starting the first run and finishing the second run? Someone I met through another running friend does this when she is training for ultra races. Just wondering pros and cons of this method.1 -
@bride001 I know a few women who run 100 milers who do 2 40-50k runs 12 hours apart to simulate the conditions associated with sleep deprivation (this only works if you stay awake between the two runs mind you). In that circumstance it would be helpful. Also, for runners who aren't accustomed to running on tired legs like you would do at the tail end of a full or an ultra it would be a good idea to develop tolerance for it0

The rest of last week just got sucked into audit hell. I'm not a fan of 10-11 hour workdays.
I flew home Friday after work and my 2.5 year old would not leave me alone. Kept covering me in kisses. He was being pretty adorable.
The weather was great yesterday so I managed a longer run than I have in a while. Still going to miss goal, though, as my next run isn't until Tuesday and it's a mini-cutback so lower mileage. Maybe I'll meet my goal for November!
Upcoming Races:
9/24 Heartbeat Run 10K 1:24:44 (11.1km)
1/1/18 Resolution Run 5K
4/8/18 Jasper Half Marathon

I actually pared down a lot because I knew from Whistler that my piri would be shot and I didn't need more weight on it. So 2L filled bladder with Elete additive, 10 salt pills, my 50km pill packet (2 Naproxen, 1 Immodium, 200mg caffeine), a 10oz bottle of keto-ade, my lamp, a thermal headband, my phone, my spare battery and chicken in a sandwich bag.
I suspected it was going to be awesome, and I was right. 100 km just because. Incredible.juliet3455 wrote: »@JessicaMcB 100k I think you can take at least 1 day off, maybe even 2. The rest of us mere mortals would need a week.
LOL, make that 2 months, and yeah.2 -

Not fair! I had to miss two days of hills this week!
Seriously though, how did this fat old street runner become the guy to beat for elevation. LOL!!

@katharmonic great job on your race! Way to embrace the suck!0
-
@carolineb81 Ah! Great race with kids!
@Garygse - Awesome link it when it is live.
@_nikkiwolf_ Congrats on your race!!
@JessicaMcB I am thinking that I might be in the ultra camp myself. I just need to find the stinking time to run those distances. BUT I doubt I will ever be the master you are! Dang. You are impressive!
@fitoverfortymom Great job on the PR! Sorry about the calf!
Sorry missed a day and you all were big chatterboxes... so if I missed anyone's races/etc, congrats!2 -
@WandaVaughn Ugh. Heart stuff can happen to the best of us - but the fact he so healthy gives him a better chance for a full recovery.3

Lazy day here today. Wife has a Dr. appointment an hour and a half away and it started at 0730, so I had to get the Little Man to daycare. I didn't want to risk getting him there late and getting late to work, so I took my normal Monday off from Running. I MIGHT sneak in a quick 5k this evening when Little Man and mommy are at ECFE, but I'll have to see how I'm feeling then.0
