@PastorVincent did you calibrate the Altimiter on your 935? You're supposed to do that before your first run. I generally recalibrate every few runs, just to make sure. I get Very consistent elevations from my Garmin, and to me that matters more than "is it accurate?" Keep up the testing, it's interesting info. GPS+GLONASS is a definite battery drain, it chopped a bunch off my battery life at my race.1

Today's notes: Right leg is finally starting to feel like I could run. The spot I rubbed raw on my achilles tendon though is still sore, so I may or may not get a run in tomorrow. I'd really like to get back into running, but I also want to make sure my recovery is complete first.

@ddmom0811 I always wanna streak but have yet to have made it. I'll try again this year.
I kicked myself yesterday in my "not new but different rarely worn" shoes on my run yesterday, repeatedly. I managed to rectify that with a few curse words and kicking my heels up a bit, which means a faster pace.* Pant *curse... My foot with the pain at top middle, seems less offended by these shoes. But my opposite ankle is terribly bruised.
Usually run in Mizunos with a lower drop and the shoes seem less bulky compared to these Brooks ghosts 9. I think I need new shoes, a new hip.... Some PT, and maybe a pizza.4 -

@MNLittleFinn It is set to auto-calibrate from GPS data everytime I activate run. If you do it manually you need to do it pretty much every run, especially if you are like men and run at a wide spread of elevations (from sea level to a couple thousand feet) which would require me looking up my elevation before every run until I memorized it.0 -

TLDR; It gets full of junk and stops working. Cleaning it fixes it.0 -

Oh yeah, knew that... elbow deep in mud... I generally run where I have know Altitides for my starts, like only 3-4 places. once I start branching out more again, I might set it to auto, or just not use it.... FTR, mine has been within about +/- 3% compared to corrected elevation.0 -

Nod, and really 90% of what I care about is pace, time, distance and HR. The Garmin nails all that without help. For elevation if ends up I just use "corrected" data, that is no biggie. Not like I am worried about elite competition levels, I am just trying to outlive my need for a pacemaker someday3 -

Goal!!! Temp back up to 49F this morning, perfect temp for me. I did a bit over 3 miles, I'm still in the mindset that I'll run the 5K tomorrow.

I think I will do the Holiday Streak again. Yeah, I know last year I said I wouldn't do it again, but it's kind of fun --
@ddmom0811 I went on a streaking run last summer and it was rather fun, particularly since it was raining. Or are you talking about a different kind of streaking?
No run for me last night. My son played the "I have too much homework" card and I decided to give my rolled ankle a break. It doesn't hurt really, but every so often I feel something different.
@rusgolden if you ever decide to give trail running a try, there's a great trail running group in your area called the Trail Nerds. They put on the Pyscho Wyco race (10M/20M/50K) in February at Wyandotta County Lake Park. I plan on running the 50K this February. They're not all about ultras though, they have plenty of shorter races as well, such as a night 5K this Saturday, a 4 mile in November and plenty of other runs in the spring and summer. They also have weekly training runs as well. That would be a great place to start. Trail runners universally are an extremely friendly, helpful group. Show up, tell them you're new, and you will get all the support and friendly advice you could ever want.

@Pastorvincent- When I ran the Flying Pig marathon in 2013, I had my Forerunner 305 which did not have an altimeter. My elevation gain according to Garmin was 1612 ft. When I ran it in 2016, I had my Forerunner 220 with altimeter and my Garmin said elevation was 904 ft. Huge difference, same course. I decided that elevation is just another one of those meaningless stats that my Garmin spits out. I guess it can be useful for reference, but in general, I pay no attention. My body knows when I am running hills.
@skippygirlsmom- I am very jealous of those socks. If I could only find a pair like them along with a pair of @garygse 's clogs I would be in business!5 -

So just stood where I start my run and compared elevation on the watch to the maps, and was over 100' difference. So I manually calibrated. Then I walked up a 40 foot hill (yes, that is how I START some runs heh - me stupid) and check the value on the watch. It was within a couple feet of the map. Will check it again when I start my run later. In theory going back to the start point should give me my calibration value back +/- a couple feet.

I do. I changed from New balance and mizunos to Altras. I had to always have a pretty wide toe box because I have huge feet. LOL. And I love the Altras compared to the others that had a wide enough toe box. But I also don't come close to running the distances you do. Also, I am probably twice your size at the moment. For me, I like the support/cushioning.0 -

I am in New Balance right now - never heard of Altras. Or if I have, I have forgotten. Will have to check them out. I would like a less cushion shoe to swap in and out with my NBs - but I have 4E feet, so makes it tough to find none NB shoes.0 -

I LOVE my Altras. Seriously, I wore them for the first 66k of my 100k and the only reason I switched to my Brooks is I wanted dry socks and putting the wet shoes on over dry socks would have defeated the purpose. I honestly love zero drop and am thinking of getting a pair of Altra road shoes because my experience with the trail shoes has been so good.0 -

Well I did it 14 miles! My longest run ever. I also PR’d at 13.1 - 2:02:27 - that’s 2 minutes off my best time so far! I’m pretty happy but also my legs feel pretty beat. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to run 5 miles tomorrow...
@PastorVincent you should see how many calories a Fitbit gives! Wayyy more than Garmin. It makes me wonder if Garmin is giving only the calories burned for the exercise ie excluding the calories you would have burned anyway.6 -
@JessicaMcB I'm not exclusively in Altras but I am working my way to zero drop, minimal cushion. I've come to the conclusion that the things we do to try to make running more comfortable are usually things which prevent our bodies from truly adapting to the activity and therefor contribute to injury.
I'm too cheap to toss, donate or sell the high drop shoes I already have so I'll use them up and eventually replace with zero drop for both road and trail.
Currently my two road shoes are high cushion, 10mm drop shoes
My four pair of trail shoes are split. Two pair are 6mm drop (On CloudVenture and Merrell All Out Charge), two are zero drop (Altra Lone Peak and Merrell Bare Access). I love the Altras and will be getting more of those. I haven't run in the MBA's enough to have an opinion on those. The Cloudventures have a 6mm drop but holy crap are they comfortable! It feels like running in slippers. I may still keep buying those even though they're not zero drop.
You probably know this, but if you're going to try out zero drop, try it out for short runs once a week at first and work your way into it. A lot of folks have trouble with their Achilles if they switch over all at once.

It would definitely take some doing because I don't really short distance anymore if I can avoid it...maybe carry Guide 10s on my back and switch on the road. How well do you find they last against mileage? I've only got about 3550km (or 2216mi) on the year so far but the number of pairs of Guide 10's, Hurricanes and Nomads I've gone through this year is obscene imo- kind of hoping since Altra is a bit more $$$ it might withstand me better0

I only have like 100 miles on my Altras and they almost look new. Unless you are hitting super rocky rugged trail, you should get good mileage out of them.1 -
@JessicaMcB Another option to easing in to the zero drop shoe is to run a short loop with them, then come back and change into your normal shoe. Week to week keep increasing the percentage of the run in the zero drop.
FWIW, while I haven't actually kept track of the numbers, Altra seems to be worn on a very high percentage of trail runners around this area.
I'm only 100 miles into my first pair so I can't comment on longevity.
