Penny, love your comment, especially the part about the guys with their knickers in a twist, made me chuckle!
Terry and Machka, I love both hair styles!
Sharon please listen to your counselor and stay safe! One thing a former coworker was told was to pack a bag with a few days worth of clothing, some toiletries, a week or so worth of any meds you need, some cash and/or a credit card and have it stashed somewhere outside the house. If you have your own vehicle, you could stash it there, or with a very trustworthy friend. Just make sure he can't find it, that could accelerate the situation in a direction that you don't want it to go.
Allie, your place looks really cute! I don't know your story but from what I've read here, it certainly sounds like you are much better off.
Pip, the photo of the dogs is so so sweet!
Today, went well, no formal exercise, but I did do a fair amount of walking at work, and it was fairly busy, so didn't have much of a chance to eat stupid stuff. lol There's a lot of Halloween candy at work right now, nice for the customers, but a definite downfall for me! I tried eating an orange as someone had suggested, probably would have worked better if it had been a better orange, it was a little dry.... It did help tho, so will try again!
Must get to bed now, the alarm will be going off way to early again tomorrow! Hope everyone has a great day!!2 -

Allie - hang in there, kiddo! From so many things you said, Tom is squeaky-tight with money, so a) he hired a cheap lawyer, which is ALWAYS a bad idea and b) it's going to take the judge's gavel to get it all out of him. HE made this bed of nails he's lying on, bless his little cheating heart.
Michele - You're on. The plan (and we all know how plans go) is to be in Fayetteville, near Fort Bragg, for the first year, and we'll take that year to find the mountain property we've been yearning for. Want to give our daughter the time and support she needs while her husband's gone on this first deployment, and then just be close enough for weekends together, or to come in and stay with the kids if she gets deployed. Plus, neither of us hanker to live in a city for long.
Rita - you were missed! Glad to see you back again.
On the subject of bathroom floors, I think I've mentioned that one of the long-term issues with gastric bypass was what's known as a Petersen's hernia. The original surgery (mine was done 12 years ago now) left a tiny hole behind, and my intestines migrated through it and then twisted and couldn't come back out. I hadn't known, but throughout the entire seven years directly after the surgery, a portion of my intestines had been going into the hole and getting stuck, all I knew was I would be in pain for hours. Eventually, they would re-emerge, and the pain would resolve. The docs I went to told me it was just constipation. Taught me that doctors don't know everything.
While it was in progress, I would sit on the bathroom floor, sweating buckets, nauseated without the ability to throw up, and literally scream in pain. That cold bathroom floor was the only relief I could find. At the seven-year mark, it finally went in completely and then twisted (strangulated) and I landed in the ER. That doctor believed me, did exploratory surgery, pulled the entire length of my intestines -- he said "all 30 feet" back through that hole and sewed up the hole. Saved my life. Never had the same pain since.
And, after that jump in the way-back machine, glad to be on this side of that issue for sure. Not good memories.
Good news - a buyer's coming to pick up the travel trailer on Monday. Didn't get as much as we wanted out of it, but willing to take a hit in order to get it sold and off our hands.
More good news, maybe - there's a potential buyer looking at the warehouse just a few days before we're slated to pack out. Not even going to hope for that sale. It will be what it is. But we will be telling the real estate lady that the price is VERY negotiable. If it doesn't sell, we have a couple that wants to rent it beginning in January and make it into a karate studio. That will work out just fine and will pay the mortgage, taxes and insurance. So, Plan A and Plan B.
Today is filled with sorting things into four categories - sell, pack, donate, or throw it away. Tomorrow afternoon I'll be in painting group, and next Sunday morning, I'll be selling books (and possibly some of my paintings) at the local Fort Days celebration. Local authors are always given a table in the museum to sell their work. The more I sell, the less I have to take with me! Oh, and I'm working at my job in between all this. Have to be in Midland (3-hour round-trip) on Tuesday, then again the following Wednesday, and possibly in Carlsbad (6-hour round-trip) the following Thursday.
Plus, of course, am working through the 31st. Will take seven days off, the first two to pack, then three days to get there, then two days to look at rental properties. Kind of a busy few weeks planned!
I sense three cups of coffee each day in my future!
Love y'all,
Lisa in West Texas (for a couple more weeks )5 -
Hi all! Done a few hundred words of my memoir, which is enough for a Saturday, so I am rewarding myself with talking to you.
Rori - If you are reading this could you contact Kim for us. Her email is blocking anything I send her and I don't have a cell number for her. You may have as I think you two met up. Anyone else who met her and has a number, could you just find out if she is ok. The fires will have been pretty close.Thanks.
Trying to organise going up to London to see DH 's daughter and my cancer friend. I have tried to see my friend, but she always seems to have other commitments, including the hospital. It's difficult. I think we are just going to have to go ahead and see my step daughter and hope to fit my friend in in the evening. We also want to catch an exhibition of Jasper John. I might have to catch a late train back on my own or even stay over at a hotel.
It's complicated by the fact that I am flying up to Glasgow soon for our girly reunion.
The butcher has aquired a ham hock for me and 8 pigs cheeks. They are in his freezer. I will also get some chuck for spicing and shredding to freeze. Game is beginning to come in so there will be partridge, pheasant and venison. I want to buy a lot at once because I have been collecting loyalty stamps and now have enough for a 20% off purchase. I will collect it all next week when I know our travel plans.
Tonight is tandoori chicken kebabs with my new tandoori powder. I remember the very first time I went to a tandoori restaurant in 1968 in London. I thought I was in heaven. I didn't want to wash my hands after I'd eaten the chicken on the bone, it smelled so heavenly! It's still one of my favourite things. We often use monkfish. Yum! I'm going to have cauliflower rice with it.
DH 's football team is playing my team this pm. I can't bear to watch, so he will take himself upstairs and I will watch Hope Springs.
He heard the other day that Ireland has been accepted to play Test Cricket for the first time. (International) The CEO of the Irish cricket team is someone DH used to captain for his local team years ago. The CEO was around 16 or 17 then. DH was an adult. He has emailed the team's address to see if the guy remembers him.

Morning all. I'm headed to some professional development hours this lovely saturday morning to observe an amazing youth orchestra rehearsal. Getting some ideas before I take up my own group on Sundays starts December. Going to be a pretty day and a pretty drive.
Cool pics Rori looks like a beautiful trip!

Happy weekend ladies! I've had a pretty good week. Work was busy, but uneventful. Weight was down yesterday, which is always good. Today we will be going down the street to watch the OU - Texas football game with neighbors. There will be two OU fans (hub and I), one TX fan (the host), one who likes both (the hostess) and two who don't care but want to come for the fun. The food will be tempting as always. I am taking a veggie tray with yogurt dip to be my main snack and then will fill in with the tempting stuff. I'll probably also eat a big green salad before I go.
Heather - I hope you get to see your friend!
Allie - I hope you can get things lined out so you don't have to keep taking off work.
Lisa - Congrats on the move! Good luck!
Evie - I do pretty good with eating some apple slices when I want something sweet.
Sharon - Stashing a bag with a trusted friend sounds like a great idea! Stay safe!

Good morning all! Happy Saturday! I was busy doing paperwork yesterday morning, so didn't have time to respond or post. Thank you for all of the comments on Joaquin. He had his "helmet" appointment Thursday morning and the doctor proclaimed him "graduated"! Yea! No more helmet! His cranial plates have moved into the right places and he grew enough in the past month, where they (the plates) won't move any more. So...he is done with the helmet. He wore it 23 hours a day; coming off only at bath time and for a few minutes after bath (time for his hair to dry). Due to the helmet, he did need a bath each day, but DD didn't use shampoo and soap each day (only about every three days). He actually got his first hair cut at five months, because his long hair was matting up inside the helmet. So...DD took the clippers to the back and sides, but left the top layer alone. Anyway...now I am anxiously waiting for the end of Dec./early Jan. for our long trip (driving) to TX. I am not sure where we will be financially at that time. (not sure if DH will be working by then), but I have put the word out to my daycare families and neighborhood families and offered childcare on weekends/evenings if they need "date nights" or "christmas shopping" time. I already have three families lined up for Friday evenings (two of them on the same Friday). I figure I can easily fund our vacation this way.
Lenora- My son in law painted the helmet. I am not sure if they are going to save it. It is a smelly little thing. Like an old shoe. That baby sweating in it in the Texas heat...Maybe if they swipe it with a cleaner and let it air out, it will be okay to store.
Machka- beautiful hair! I kept my hair long (down to my waist) for many years; but I always had to have it braided. It is thick, but fine, and it would mat up and knot every time I left it hanging long. Finally I went shoulder length. I have bounced back and forth between shoulder length and chin length for a few years now. I'd like to go shorter, but DH can hardly stand it when it is chin length. He likes it long. I go along with him, because it is a little thing and I don't really care that much. I still have days, though, when I would just like to shave my head. I can't believe there was a time in my life that I spent two hours "getting ready" in the bathroom.
Allie- Love your home! The colors are fantastic and you have it decorated so nicely! Hang in there! I think Tom is about to get his "come-uppance".
Rori- Your vacation photos look wonderful! You are stunning! Oooooh and the infused oils! I could spend all day tasting and smelling and trying to figure out what to buy in those oil and vinegar shops! One of my favorite oils is a Fernleaf Dill infused olive oil. It is great to cook with and on salads. My favorite oil vendor has a 30 year balsamic vinegar that is aged in a copper barrel. It costs $30 for a 10oz bottle, but mmmmmmmm, heaven. Those are luxuries for me. DH will get them for me at Christmas or for birthday/ mother's day. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy your vacay!
Penny- agree with the other ladies about that final paragraph. You really summed up who we are and what we love about us! Right back at you, lady!
Heather- Tandoori chicken is one of my favorite things, too. I have never tried to make it at home, though. Do you have a recipe you use? and would like to share? Also...Do you rice your cauliflower before or after you cook it?
Joyce-In regards to Scouts: I like the idea of letting boys into Girl Scouts and girls into Boy Scouts. As a former GS leader, if there was a boy who wanted to join us, he would have been welcome. I am sure, many towns/cities, have years where scouting is popular and then there are years when it is not. While I was leading, Girl Scouts was booming in our town. Many troops, leaders, girls and the Boy Scouts were dwindling, unable to find enough leaders, not many boys joining. Now, it has reversed. I would hope in situations like this, that organizations would accept the other gender into their troop. Scouting really does open up doors and experiences to many children, who would otherwise not be able to experience things. One thing that bothers me: The news shows have made it sound as if girls want to join boy scouts to get the Eagle Award (as if they don't have the equivalent). Girl Scouts can earn the Gold Award. The equivalent of the Eagle Award. It is not as well known; perhaps because most people think of girl scouts as "cookie sellers". My DD is a Gold Award recipient. She spent three years on her project.

I am having a bout of hair envy. I’d love that long braid or the smart short cut! They both look fantastic.
Mine is fine, straight and mousy brown. Neither short or long works well, but long is much easier to deal with (yay! for ponytail and braids!) and looks better with my face shape.
The stylists I’ve gone to over the years all agree, a mid length cut (probably asymmetrical like shoulder length in front short in back) would be best for my face and hair, but that I’d have to keep getting it trimmed every two or three weeks. When I’ve had those cuts, tho, I find they never look close to as good as they did when the stylist does them, and I had to spend at least a 1/2 hour a day trying to make them look good. I gave up trying decades ago, and except for a special specific occasion I grow my hair out straight and longish and go to a Supercuts once or twice a year to trim the worst split ends off. Detangle the wet hair and air dry = <1 minute. Now we’re talking!
Now the past two years, gray hair has been joining the mix, and it is so much thicker than my normal hair, maybe when I have more gray I can try a new hairstyle. So I might be a rare woman who welcomes the gray hair.
Fine straight hair like mine requires 1 or 2x a day washings. Depending upon sweat, actually. If I work out or if it is very hot ( and in Texas it is usually very hot) I have to wash it a second time in a day unless I’m staying home and no one is coming by. Unless I have a hat! Just one more reason to love hats!
boomer sooner that is for my MIL, I’m not a follower of college football. I am, however a cubs fan, they play today and we’ll be watching here: Go Cubbies!
—————-
So, late yesterday I got the call, the job offer, which had been contingent on a number of things, cleared all of the contingencies (finally, after 3 trips to Dallas, borderline results on blood tests and a radiology department that LOST my X-rays) - and instead of starting in the 23rd as we discussed, why don’t I start this Monday! Yeah, two days!
So I’m happy but frazzled. The process of getting this job has been a roller- coaster AND expensive. It is only part time, but I can walk or bike there! (1.5 miles) But this will put us on financial footing that will allow us to continue to contribute to my father’s ongoing care, pay the yearly home tax increases of 10% a year, and give us breathing space before we (likely) will have to sell because we can’t pay the taxes here anymore. I expect we have a few years leeway now! What a relief.
So, I’ll be busy this weekend and only able to watch my cubbies highlights probably this weekend. My hours will most likely be 4pm to 8pm so that messes with dinner - so I’m making some meals I can put into Tupperware and take with me. I will spend most of my time in an open public area so the foods can’t be smelly either. I’ll just have to eat my broccoli for lunch now, lol. My husband and I rarely have the same meal, so he is used to fetching dinner for himself, so thank heavens that is not a worry.
So yes, busy, but a good busy. Thanks so much to you who sent good wishes my way, you succeeded!
Cin Cin a tutti!

I switched my photo to remind everyone in the northern hemisphere that we need to protect our pets with reflective wear during hunting season and from traffic related hazards during low light conditions in the darker months of winter. We made this ourselves from an inexpensive reflective vest for people.

Pip: I'll look forward to your information. Have a great trip to the gym.
I'm going trail riding with a friend from the stable this morning. We're set to meet in just over an hour. Depending on conditions & horse behavior we may stay in the pasture or try to go down the hill. Arrow is reputedly a good trail horse away from home, but barn sour at home. Her horse is a good follower but needs the support of another horse to follow away from the barn. It will be an adventure. I will be wearing reflective clothing but don't have anything reflective for the horse. There are things for sale online & I'd consider buying if I had my own horse. I don't know whether the reflective fabric is available at fabric stores. We made our dog's jacket out of a man's reflective vest we bought at a discount place for next to nothing.
Have a great day!

Hi all! Can't say good morning cause we are all in different time zones. 10 am here humid and overcast. You would think the desert would be dryer. I've been surprised by the weather here and flowers everywhere. DH made a breakfast burrito in a spinach wrap. It was delicious but had to guess in calories.
No plan for today. This area doesn't have a lot to do. More later.

Katla – I’m not sure that DH has talked to his IMD; but, it isn’t so bad that he is drenched. Actually, his head more than anywhere else. He has had what they thought was going to end up being stints; but, actually they described it as ‘rust’ areas; not needing stints.
Michele – I think you go to ‘settings’ and there is a ‘notifications’ switch you can turn on and off. But, I also think inside any given program (such as FB, it also has the ability to turn ‘notifications’ to it on and off. I told the guy I did NOT want the darn thing ‘dinging at me’ if I could help it. He told me that she had turned them all off and they should not do it. If it does, then it must be something the phone or an advertiser is trying to sell me and I will ignore it. Young lady I talked to about my “messenger” said one was associated with Samsung; the other was one that was ‘free’. I told her I like the ‘red’ icon much better than the ‘yellow’ so that I can see and find it quickly.
Janetr OKC – That is a great way to notify someone you are quitting (not just a job) but any other commitment that isn’t working for you. Allie could use it and say, “I’m GONE!
Joyce – I sleep on my back with C-pap because it is just a more comfortable position and I don’t block the air flow as much as I do if laying on either side. I am more apt to pull the mask off if I turn on my side. I use a ‘wisp’ mask; not a ½ mask or full mask, because I am ‘terminally claustrophobic’. When I had my first ‘sleep study’ they tried everything and finally ended up putting me in a ‘wisp’; if that had not worked they were going to have to go back to the ½ mask so I was happy it worked. I rent my machine; then it becomes mine and all I have to do then is get the supplies and Medicare and my health insurance pays for it. I rent it because it isn’t coming ‘out of my pocket’ and if something goes wrong with it, they will replace it at no charge. I have my first one to use as a back-up.
Off to watch “Patch Adams”
Lenora2 -
Rye: Congrats on your new job! What will you be doing?0

KJ - I don't have a recipe for the tandoori, but this was the first time I've used a commercial tandoori powder blend instead of my own blend. It was very tasty, but I will add more powder to the yoghurt next time. I also added garlic to the powder/yoghurt mix and lemon juice. I marinated it most of the afternoon in the fridge and then threaded it onto kebab skewers. The secret is a really hot grill (broiler). Get a good char on the outside. I line my grill pan with foil.
I use my processor to chop the raw cauliflower into rice. I also put in a handful of parsley. Previously I had put onions and garlic in there to chop and I sautéed them in a large frying pan. Then I tipped in the cauliflower with lemon juice, smoked paprika, seasoning and, at the last minute, two chopped tomatoes. It makes a lot, so there is some left for a snack. I mainly counted the tablespoon of oil and added a bit for the veg, but it's very low in calories. We had the dish with raita - yoghurt, lemon juice, garlic, spring onions, dried or fresh mint and cucumber. Again I used the processor and didn't wash it between uses as it's pretty much the same thing.
It was all delicious and incredibly filling.
At the same time I was making sourdough, no knead bread with my left over whey from my yoghurt making. I rose it in 3 hours in the IP. Cooked it in a Dutch oven. It looks amazing. Recipe in This Old Gal. I will freeze it for a celebration day.
DH 's team have just won against my team. He is very, very happy!

Yes, Rye - congrats!! That's super news on the job! Way to go!!
Katla - I like your dog's reflective vest. Does he like to be walked in the rain if so, do you have a raincoat for him? Or let him go au naturel? Hope you have a great trail ride - nice chilly but wonderful sunny day!!
Rosie chewed through her harness yesterday...I saw her fussing with it from time to time but didn't realize what a good chewer she was. It was kind of a dainty fru-fru harness. So I raced into town to the pet store and got her a heavy duty reflective harness which makes her look very grown up. She doesn't like the rain and cold but I do want to get her (and me) out walking our little traveled private road once the vet "releases her for duty" in a couple days.
Terry in VT - I love that scenery!! Thank you for sharing those photos - what a pleasant drive in the autumn. Do you get a lot of snow and is the commute pretty tough in the winter?
Rori - looks like a good time in Santa Barbara! Great photos and great time of the year, the way it looks. I love the Washington beaches in the fall and winter. Something about the cold wind and spray that is so invigorating, plus they are generally deserted. We used to live closer - an hour's drive - and it was a great way to spend the afternoon and take the dogs for a run.
Lisa - how neat things are falling into place with the warehouse. Some of my favorite reads are the Father Tim - Mitford series by Jan Karon set in the mythical town of Mitford, NC. Don't know how accurate the description of the valley and the townspeople are, but I've wanted to move there for a long time Michele, do you live in or near Mitford or Blowing Rock by any chance? LOL!
That's it for now - DH is hoping to do the final lawn mow in the next couple sunshiney days. Looks like Tuesday, the Pacific NW monsoons will start.
Have a great weekend!

Thank you ladies, the job is nothing special —administrative support at the rehabilitation center side and reception for the 6pm to 8 pm shift on the fitness center side. Some Saturdays and fill in as needed work as well.
It is the walking distance part that makes it special!

Rye congrats on the job especially because she worked hard to get it and didn't give up when there were bumps in the road
As an alternative to keeping Joaquin's helmet for "sentimental reasons " why not consider a digital file of photos. One less thing to clutter the storage in someone's house
We just delivered a knitted blanket to Project Linus and many boxes and bags of stuff to the local charity thrift shop. My afternoon project is scanning photos from my parents' wedding

Rita at Brantley Lake New Mexico
RitaI have to admit that I'm surprised that it's humid there. Not the norm at all for the Carlsbad area. We lived in that part of New Mexico for many years and humidity was rare. You caught it at a "good" time but I'm sure it makes it feel hotter than it is. They have had recent rains down there and that accounts for the wild flowers. They stay dormant until rain and then the desert just goes blooming crazy! I always loved the desert after the rains.
I was up this morning to head out for a 14 mile run and instead ran to my daughter's house to watch grandkids. Our son-in-law was taken to the hospital (admitted) for chest pains. Nothing wrong with his heart but they are on to checking his gall bladder. Still has pain but not as bad. So I've got her two grandkids, another two showed up while their folks went off for a date with their oldest daughter and tonight my other daughter and her two show up to spend the night as that daughter has to be at work at 4 am tomorrow for a computer program change-over that she's in charge of..... so it turns out that it is grandkid day. All self-sufficient aged kids and they are super excited that grandpa cleaned the pool and heated it up a bit for them so they will spend most of the afternoon in the pool. Easy baby-sitting for me. The rest of my day will be laundry and cleaning, as much as you can with six kids around....

Hi Sisters, I have been reading a most fascinating book by Dr. Jason Fung. He specialises in treating people who have kidney failure but he was unsatisfied at just dealing with the symptoms of disease. He wanted to find out the cause and fix that. Well, people who got Diabetes would end up with kidney failure, and there was a link to obesity. His book The Obesity Code, goes into all the triggers of Obesity/Diabetes and it is all about the hormone Insulin. He says the key to really shedding weight for good and actually resetting your body's weight setpoint/homeostatis and keeping the weight off is about breaking through your body's insulin resistance. Here is a link to an interview with the Doctor. I think this book is good in some ways, although I don't think it goes far enough in looking at how all the hormones interact with one another and how menopause changes these hormone balancing acts. However, it is a good start at seeing how hormones do effect weight gain and loss and sheds some more light on the big picture: https://www.bewell.com/blog/q-dr-jason-fung-book-obesity-code/ Wendy4
