Hi all, just catching up with you in my favourite department store in Oxford Street.
Yes. Duolingo. I revised my Spanish, learnt Norwegian, then German and now I am learning Swedish for next summer. I am 37% fluent at the moment. (don't think so)
Many good wishes to all the sick and recovering husbands and hugs for the headaches etc.
I'm going to set off for the train soon and get sushi to eat on the journey. I probably won't be able to sit down for a few stops as it's the rush hour.

Karen in VA: Lovely photos of fog rising from the water.
Lanette: I'm glad the apple cider vinegar & honey was effective at stopping your acid reflux. Yay!!! :flowerforyou:
Rori: I'm so happy that you were able to contact Kim. Thank you for the good news that she's okay.
I woke up sore everywhere. It is almost time for yoga and I need to take my aching body there to stretch it out.

Felicia, I keep a note pad by my bed and when my mind starts to whirl at night so that I can't sleep, I just jot down everything I'm thinking of or need to remember and then I can sleep knowing it is all captured. Might work for you too.

Karen ~ Love the photo of the fog on the water. So peaceful!
Terry ~ Your arrangement is beautiful.
Becca ~ Glad your husband is back home to protect you from those nasty spiders.
Felicia ~ Congrats on the skinny pants.
We are having someone come in a few minutes to show us floor samples and give an estimate. Hope it works out OK.

Hej Heather! Förstår du det här?
There are many reasons why I ended up in Sweden for 30-odd years; the most trivial one of all was that I liked the look of the language's "bejewelled" letters.
Around the third day of these week-long courses I teach, I always start to feel that all my muscle glycogen has been used up. Cravings galore! So I was ambushed by the goodies that appeared with today's afternoon coffee and I couldn't resist. I ate TWO, for crying out loud! Now I'm munching raw rutabaga so I guess I'm back in the saddle.

Hello all. Just a quickie...grandson was born yesterday sometime...Huddsen, 7 pounds, 5 ounces and that's all I know for now. Take care, Meg11

Joyce ... yes I'm the one with the older son who is disabled, the younger son with chronic migraines, the husband with back issues, the mom who had uterine cancer in February, and the dad who has the bowel issues now ....
Drkatiebug ... that sounds very scary ... glad you went to the ER and everything is ok .. hope the migraine leaves you soon.
Becca ... life does not follow a linear path, that's for certain ... praying your husband's health situation will allow you to eventually be with your son.
Brought my dad home from the hospital at 7:00 last night and then he was complaining of pain again by 9:00 ... we decided to wait it out. They gave him a huge amount of food yesterday after 5 days of nothing??? I thought it might be food moving through his system/gas. Today he doesn't have pain, but I'm still here watching.

Spiders I actually almost died as a toddler from a brown recluse spider bite, I am told. I believe it because the scarring - a deep dimple where the spider bit me and cell necrosis set in is still visible on my stomach. Curiously, I don’t actually mind spiders much. I try to trap them in cardboard and set them outside if at all possible.
My cats cornered a mouse a few months ago. I thought I hated mice, but I think this poor soul had cardiac arrest from the encounter. None of my three domesticated kitties could (or wanted to) perform the neck breaking death clamp and the poor critter was seemingly frozen in fear as they all played with him. I eventually was able to capture him in a cardboard box and bring him outside. His whiskers and ears were moving so I know he was alive, but he was so still. I THOUGHT I hated mice, but now I realize I’m just a softie. I still occasionally think of him with worry. Lol, I know, I’m ridiculous.
My cats favourite living toys are geckos. They are plentiful in my area, and a few end up in the house each year. I have a big soft spot for reptiles (snakes, iguanas, geckos ...) so I try to rescue these poor critters too. I think the geckos are such magnificent creatures, I could watch one for hours.
Actually, the only pests I will kill are anything in the cockroach family and mosquitoes. My soft side does not extend to them.
Charlie with the poor mouse in the house.

Machka thanks for the Duolingo link. I haven't stumbled across that site so look forward to checking it out.
Terry about fasting-there are a lot of 'urban myths' that are passed around: things like you will lose all your muscle and your metabolism will slow down and you will gain it all back and more...but fasting has been used for many, many years as a cure for disease of all types and now studies are showing that it actually increases your lifespan (didn't work for Jesus!) and gives your body a rest from digesting so that your liver can process and remove toxins and diseased cells that it has put in temporary storage. Most books I've read about anti-aging recommend regular fasting if you want to retain your youth and health. It is a great way to drop weight fast (pun intended) but you need to keep in mind that when you start eating again, you will naturally go up a pound or two just from having food in your stomach.
The problem with most books that tell you to fast, is they don't really tell you HOW to 'not eat' when you really, really WANT to. LOL I have found that the best thing for me is to use distractions and stay busy...not hard in my lifestyle. I also allow myself plenty to drink during my fasts which is at least some satisfaction to my stomach. What do you do, RYE?
I don't know, for those of you with low blood sugar, what the rules for fasting are. You would need to talk to an educated doctor who had supervised fasts for diabetics, like Dr. Jason Fung. I'm sure your blood would need to be monitored during the fast and sugar given if needed. Obviously, fasting may not be for everyone but I use it as one of my important tools to achieve my goals of staying, young, healthy and slender.
Congrats on the new baby, MEg I love that name Huddsen!
I have got my daughter and grandkids coming to stay at the farm today and I must go get the guest room tidy and beds made up, then I have to move my horses to fresh paddocks and I plan to also do a home gym workout this morning, so gotta dash. I am planning to fast today, and I will let you know if I am successful!

Wendy the 5:2 fast is not a true fast ( tho they believe it may confer many of the same benefits). On a ‘fast’ day I consume 500 calories. A good deal of that is protein and the carbs are restricted to nutrient rich veggies ( no starches or fruits on fast day). The other five days I eat pretty normally actually.
How do I manage? For me it is much easier to manage that than a 24/7 1200ish calorie diet. Because I just tell myself not today, Rye, but you can have it tomorrow if you want it. Because I have 1600 calories on the other five days it is easy to allow myself whatever I had to deny myself on the two fast days. My weekly calories have been virtually identical to the 1200 a day calorie restricted diet but for me it is so much easier and more sustainable and satisfying. The early results are promising too, in 2 weeks I lost as much as I did most months - 2 pounds.
Many say it (intermittent fasting) is just the same as a regular caloric restriction diet, but my body is responding very differently, much better in all measurable ways I can think of. I’m cautiously optimistic- and I’m a die-hard realist who almost never ventures into optimism- so that is saying something.
Good luck with your fast today, Wendy. If 5:2 continues to go well for me I’m going to likely try a real 24-36 hour fast.

Hi, I just finished my gym workout and took a selfie, that shows my blonde hair...took at least four bottles of bleach and a month to get it to this stage. LOL
RYE I consider eating 500 calories a "real" fast. Fasts come in all shapes and sizes and types. Sometimes I coffee fast, or liquid fast...or fast all day and just eat dinner...or just eat breakfast and fast the rest of the day. I own my fasts and don't follow anybody else's rules. (Bit of a rebel) I like the idea of the 5:2 fast because it keeps your metabolism revved. The longest fast I've been on was two weeks. Now I just have a rule that I like to keep my weight in the 120's. Anytime I start seeing 130's, I start fasting until I get into my happy place again.
Now, time to get the guest room ready Wendy

Just noticed you can actually see three of my cats in that picture. LOL Crazy cat woman strikes again..
Just wanted to add that I always take my multi vitamins and supplements and hormones during my fasts as there is no way that I want any harm to come to my body or bones or health.2 -
Penny: My house if full of Halloween candy and so am I.
(((Beth))) You are a busy woman with an overflowing plate. I hope that you'll find a little time for rest. :flowerforyou:
Meg: Congrats on the new grandson!
Wendy: Fasting didn't work for Jesus because he was murdered for speaking out and sharing his truth. :grumble: You look good with blond hair.
I'm home from yoga and DH is at the dentist getting a crown on one of his molars. My knitting project is done until the next yarn arrives, so I plan to sit and reread one of my favorite books written by Linda Lael Miller.
Have a great day!

mosquitos, gnats, and flies. These are on my "kill" list. I especially hate flies. Nasty disgusting little germ spreaders.
I summon my inner Buddhist when I find spiders, mice, snakes etc in my house or on my property. Some northern black widows have been showing up in my yard, though, and I DO kill them, mainly because I have little ones playing there. But the non venomous critters are okay. As an adult I have over come my "fear" of creepy crawlies so that I can get the kids to touch, hold, or get close and not be afraid. I frequently bring baby bunnies into the house so my hubby and DYS can see them. They show up when I mow the lawn, and turn into statues as I make my way toward them. So tiny! Fuzzy balls of irresistability. DH is not a critter person. He is a "city" boy and doesn't know a lot about nature or animals. He thinks I am a crazy person as I pick things up, let bees land on me, get excited about stick bugs, praying mantis, and salamanders. We took a walk last spring and there was a Hognose snake on the trail. He jumped and started running and I just laughed as I took a step towards it and it just flipped over, belly up; playing dead. I then got a stick and picked it up to show him. It still played dead, but he didn't think it was funny and he doesn't walk that trail with me anymore.
Yea! Lanette- glad the Braggs is working for you!
Rye- Yea! Glad the fasting is working for you! I just saw an article that said men and women over a certain age (40-45) benefit from intermittent fasting. I guess just fasting for a day, triggers your body to release fat; otherwise our bodies tend to hold onto everything, thinking we have hit that age where we are going to begin slowing down and therefore need to store and conserve fat and energy for survival. Caveman bodies. P.S. You need to caption that pic of the cat eating the mouse! He looks so cheeky; like he is winking at you and saying "Tastes like chicken!"
Wendy- YOU have so much energy! I am always astonished at how much you get done in a day! When I fast, I have to keep busy, otherwise I fail. I drink a lot more water and tea (unsweetened). I also chew gum. I spent the majority of my life not chewing gum because I was told, by some one in Mexico, that they can spot the American's by their constant gum chewing, "Como una vaca" (like a cow). I desperately wanted to NOT look American, so I quit chewing gum when I was 19. I started again about 5 years ago, but I limit my chewing to during work outs/runs/walks and on fasting days. It really helps keep me (or rather, my mouth) busy and not thinking about food.
News on the childcare front: For years I have been lobbying our county/state provider resource networks for some sort of childcare provider network/support group. Some place where providers can go and vent, find solutions to problems, brainstorm with other providers, network for new clients when we have openings or when we are closing our childcare homes, forming a co-op so that we have health/dental benefits available to us, etc. WELL, we had our first meeting last night. I am so excited about this. After almost 24 years in the business it is so nice to be able to have this, because the isolation of this job and the frustrations that go along with it are intense and you really don't have any one to hash things out with or to. IF you complain about children or issues with children, people thing you have no business caring for them. It is a hard path to walk. BUT...I am so happy to be on the ground floor of this group! Yea! It is all volunteer work, but it is something I can get behind and help others. Woo-hoo!
Love and hugs to you all! Kids are waking up from nap and it is National Chocolate Cupcake Day! They are having cupcakes and strawberries for snack. I will not be having one; because I bargained with one of my daycare moms (I was out of eggs) that if she brought me three eggs, I would send her home with 18 chocolate cupcakes! I feel no remorse for pawning them off on her. She is a size zero (Can you believe there is such a thing?!) She can eat a cupcake or two (or a dozen) and not have a problem.

My cancer friend and I discussed hospices, POA, funerals and other cheering topics. She is going to ring round three fairly local hospices and visit them. I'm glad she can talk about this with me as not everybody is receptive. (It's one of my favourite topics)
She also gave me a "bull÷×+= bracelet to use next week, so I don't lose my temper and shout at my "difficult " friend in Glasgow. I can move the beads round my wrist when I notice her talking #÷××+=%$ and think about my cancer friend. I will be so Zen. I am also going to request lots of fizzy water to dilute my wine. My other friend emailed me to ask if I wanted to do a non drinking pact with her. Sweet of her, but I think I have a plan now. The bracelet will be great. I did toy with the idea of a Pandora one and rewarding myself with a new bead when I keep my temper with my friend, but they are sooooooooooooo expensive! It's an idea though.
Kept within my calories today.

Becca – Don’t feel bad, honey, I have a ‘terminal case of arachnophobia’. I see a spider, I am hyperventilating for as long as I don’t see its dead body! We have a wood house, so having spider webs is a given; but, I hate them around the door, so Louis has to pressure wash them away several times a year. I keep telling him that 'if' I see one by my backdoor, he is going to be brushing them away on a daily basis.
Terry – We have field mice, too – Tux gets a lot of them; but, I really don’t need him to ‘present’ them to me at the back door. If I don’t see any alive, then he is doing his job. He gets paid the same either way, food and water, a nice place to sleep, lots of hugging and playing with … what more could he possibly ask for? While Cracker is part “Rat Terrier” I don’t think she will mess with those things – she’s an ‘inside dog’ don’t ‘cha know.
Rye – I got bitten by a spider in 3rd grade. We had a teacher who was a bit ‘off her rocker’. The first day she told us that under no set of circumstances were we to get ‘out of our desks’. So I watched this spider drop down from the ceiling onto my arm, biting me when I moved trying to get it off me. I crawled up in the desk, [never put my feet on the ground] and stood up and screamed bloody murder. She walked over and literally slapped me so hard that I fell over the front of my desk; then I spend the entire rest of the day standing out in the hall. But, at any given moment in the three 3rd grade classes there were 2 or 3 kids standing in the door frame. We’d play ‘change sides’ … the principal NEVER looked down the 3rd grade wing whenever he came out of his office. I guess he knew there’d be children in the doorframes.
Heather – Yeah, the Pandora bracelets and charms are very expensive. I have a bracelet that I put my charms on that I get whenever I attend a Women’s Retreat in the Fall. Got to get my reservation in. Won’t have to pay until I get there; but, I will send in a little bit of money as soon as I can. Wonderful weekend and my sister usually comes. Not sure if she will this year since it would be the first time of going off without her DH who had a bad stroke last October. Got to get a ride, so I guess I will call Lynn. The only issue I have with her is that she speaks of her late husband (now dead going on 4 years) as if he is still alive and right there with her. Last year she was upset that she could not find someone to ‘date’ or go ‘out to eat with’. One of the ladies ‘suggested’ pretty strongly that her talking about her late husband the way she does might be a turnoff. She still does it. They were HS sweethearts; as is her sister-in-law and her brother were/are.

Penny - I know I am not fluent as I have never actually spoken any Swedish to anyone. I do try to repeat the phrases I learn on Duolingo and today on the train I did 101 phrases in Swedish. But my active Swedish is non existent. I just tell myself I know more than I did 4 months ago when I started! I love languages. It is the best way to get under the skin of a country.

Our Monday chapel speaker would have added (and did) ". . . by a dominate culture lighter skinned than He was." :grumble: (Ha! figured out your blue grumbly guy.)
And I agree, I love the blond hair. My belly will never, ever look like that.

Hey ladies! I have figured out my gift to my daughter in law. I have a sterling silver spoon ring, that I am giving her for Christmas. Found some of our family tartan (Brown), and a Christmasy looking shoelace I kept, and padded a box I've had forever. Voilà! I am going to research the name inside the ring, because the jeweler who cleaned it for me said it a famous mark in the sterling world. Maybe put that in my card to her? Would that be tacky? I want her to know the history of it, its story anyway. My father gave me the ring, and now it travels.
