Today's notes – I procrastinated long enough to miss the sunshine, but still had daylight with overcast skies and 45º F (7º C) temperature when I got out to run this afternoon. Wind was not a factor; Garmin says 7 mph. The plan was to run no more than three miles, and give myself the opportunity to bail at two.
The hurt quad still isn't right, but it's better than it was on Monday. With a reasonable running temperature, it actually felt a bit better after I warmed up. Ran a twisty route around my neighborhood to not be very far from home if I needed to quit at any given point; ended up doing a short out and back from my driveway to get to 3 miles even. For how I felt, I could have kept running; but I got into this mess by overdoing it, so I'll be content with an easy 3 today.
I'm not feeling as much aftereffects of running on a still recovery quad as I did on Monday, so I'm happy to be making progress. Now I think I'll take both tomorrow and Friday as rest days, then attempt the 5 mile race on Saturday. Except I don't intend to race it, just run it easy. Yeah, right. The race environment will probably tempt me into running at MP; but I definitely don't want to run at a hard 5 mile race pace.

@NikolaosKey – Condolences on being hurt. Couch time is no fun. Don't feel too bad about getting there. Your statement, "I was very stupid on this, my body sent signals and I ignored them," could have been written by just about any runner. We all seem to be in denial until we swing into hypochondria.
I actually believe the line I used that caused a PT to snort water out his nose, and a new one laughed at me today for it, was “I was pretty sure I knew what a doctor would tell me, so rather than run AGAINST medical advice, I chose not to seek medical advice until I was done with the half marathon.”
Like probably not my smartest move to have been in a spot where I was more concerned with pre run ibuprofen than pre run fueling.
So yeah... definitely not alone on ignoring those signals... I wish you a speedy recovery. On the groupy bit we have a whole thread of us gimpy folks if ya need some non running venting.

Went on a short recovery run of just 1.6 miles today (after my longest run ever yesterday) - I didn't even break a sweat. Looking back, last spring during my distance class I was able to run 3-4 slow miles. I would be sweating after the first mile and very tired by the end, but not in terrible shape. It was, after all, the first time I had done any distance running. Then life caught up to me and I was doing only 0.75 miles this last fall. It's weird to think my recovery runs are more than twice as long as my "hard" runs from a few months ago!
I've been reading everyone's posts on this forum and wish I had time to respond to all of them - because you are all so inspiring! Just the sheer amount of mileage you all are putting on really motivates me to try just a little harder everyday. So thank you for posting! Keep being awesome!

Great post @MNLittleFinn - the master of hills is coming for you Zumbro
@hanlonsk that is kind of classic...I might steal that for future PT lectures!
So I'm still alive, just inundated with sick children and a disaster zone house and a husband who is on the road yet again. I should be doing dishes right now but...priorities . Got the letter today that I'll be one of the first out the gate at the invitation only. Now to continue to work neurotically on my trail speed when I am not being relegated to the mechanical cage

Woke up this morning with a mild niggle in my lower back and by the time I got home from work the thought of lifting my almost 3 year old filled me with dread. It's not awful but not comfortable either. Going to blame my almost 6 year old climbing all over me while I was sitting awkwardly yesterday.
In any case, did my scheduled strength workout anyway, just lowered my weights a bit from wimpy to pathetic.
Gym tomorrow, hoping to get there a bit earlier so it's not as busy but that all depends on how organized we all are in the morning. The earlier I get to work the earlier I can leave...10 -

@HonuNui I keep meaning to ask... why were you gobsmacked?
@7lenny7 It's all very easy to say you shouldn't have stepped out there between cars even if the crosswalk was blocked. But you are so right, we need eternal vigilance to protect ourselves!! So hard when you're trying to run places!
@NikolaosKey Kudos on your insight. I wish you patience and wisdom in your recovery.
@sarahthes Hope you're not off sick for long. You too, @RespectTheKitty .
@fe45tv You might be able to run further for the year if you don't run every day, but rest in between runs, and build up your distance per run gradually.
Healing is just as important as training when it comes to results.5 -

Another lovely run this morning.
My schedule for the past month or two has been 4 runs per week. Seems to be the right combination of running/resting, and I've been getting faster and with lower heart rate.

@7lenny7 I am probably the 100th person to say I’m glad you & Kody are okay, but I still mean it. I have done almost the same but worse. Running with traffic in daylight, I waited until the car I could hear coming passed me, I went to cross the road not paying any more attention. I almost got hit by the car following closely right behind. That was definitely my fault, and that was in regular daylight. Thank you for your link to a reflective vest. I need one.5
-
@7lenny7 - So glad you're OK!
Took a rest day yesterday and hated it. By the end of the day I was feeling so cranky and anxious, but I know my body needed it. Didn't get to bed as early as I would've liked, but the thought of another day of not running made it relatively easy to get up at 4 and run this morning. My easy runs are getting even easier, so I'm thinking about pushing my long runs further this weekend. My first race of the year is in a couple weeks, and my goal for that one is only one walk break.

@7lenny7 - oh my gosh - just read about your scare. I appreciate you telling us about it. We all can get too confident the more experienced at running we become and forget to look properly. SO glad you and Kody are okay.
Nothing exciting to report - intervals at 4:30 in the morning.
I finally figured out my pattern of running. When school is out -- I run faster! When school is in -- I run slower!

I Have lost 125 pounds since September 2014. Running/walking and trying to eat right have become an essential part of my life.
Gonna try and get in 75 miles this month.
January Total so Far - 25 miles13 -
Four miles on the treadmill in the gym last night. Was planning on six, but I just wasn't feeling it (I was quite surprised I actually made it to the gym rather than going straight home). My legs felt heavy and my head wasn't in the game. I thought about giving up at three miles but managed to go for another mile before giving up and going in the sauna instead.
But four miles is better than no miles.7 -
@Southpaw1958 welcome and congratulations on your amazing transformation. Great goal and you are right on target.
@Orphia you always have such nice pictures, but this one is really gorgeous and sweet. Love they are all looking at the camera
Sorry for those who are feeling sick and/or sore. Rest up today!2 -
Finally got back out there. I was only planning on a mile but I was making decent time and my ankle felt better so I kept going. I had taken a protein bar with me to eat on my cool down walk home but at some point during my run I dropped it. Lol.

Another day, another run. It's rainy and hanging out just above freezing. No complaints here.
Upcoming races:
1/20 CityTrail 5k
1/28 Madeira Marathon (Funchal, Portugal)
2/17 CityTrail 5k (morning) + Lublin 10k (night race)
3/17 CityTrail 5k
3/18 CityTrail 5k (in Warsaw, because I got a free start)
4/8 Lublin 10k
May pick and choose from these races, or take some time off and bike all summer:
5/13 Lublin Marathon (? pretty sure I want to do it)
6/23 Kraśnik Half-Marathon (?)
9/23 Loch Ness Marathon (?) if I feel like training in August4 -
@7lenny7 Wow! I'll add to everyone's sentiments of being glad that you and Kody are ok. It's one of those things where we're careful 99% of the time, but all it takes is that 1% to bring disaster. I normally assume I'm invisible when out (that applies for driving also), but just the other day I was crossing at a crosswalk (I had the green 'walk' sign), when a minivan just sailed right on through the intersection, completely running the red light. If I hadn't been paying attention and stopped walking, who knows what the outcome would have been. It wouldn't have been one in my favor, that's for sure.
And a pet peeve of mine are the drivers in the dark that think they're being helpful by waiting for me, or trying to wave me by. I know they're just trying to help, but I normally can't see the driver, so have they really seen me? Are they really waiting for me or are they just trying to find their phone? If I go, will they also then suddenly accelerate if they weren't really waiting for me?5 -

@orphia I'm laughing too hard at how they are all looking at you.
@JessicaMcB dirty the girls aren't feeling well Congrats on the starting spot
@sarahthes hope the back feels better soon
@cburke8909 sorry you are still sick
@ddmom0811 I wonder why that is you would think you'd be faster knowing you're on a time schedule.
@southpaw1958 amazing congratulations!
@HRKinchen just remember how important rest days are.

@skippygirlsmom - Thank you for the reminder. I know it; I just don't like it.1

Yesterday's run was not good. I started out ok, but the leg kind of hurt, so I walked a little, ran a little. But then I couldn't keep the heart rate down so I walked the rest. Since then (and maybe before) I can't keep the heart rate down even walking across the office. I took my blood pressure when I got to work and it was elevated. Not quite sure what the heck is going on. Dr appt is next weds and dr is out of town until then so I can't even get in before then. Maybe I'm coming down with something.6
