Thanks for that reminder. After seeing someone on a run this week when I never see anyone, I locked that *kitten* down.5 -

This is why the U.S. military is considering banning Strava use... since it was revealed last year that some of the Heat Maps inadvertently revealed the location of secret military bases.
Having said that, I do hide the area around my house and work; but am otherwise open. I approve followers, and I don't mind sharing with my few followers who are active. Also, I'm pretty sure the runner I stalk on Strava could outrun me anyway.5 -

Well, you (and I) have the distinct advantage of being male. MOST stalkers are men looking for women. Not all, I mean a thief could use it to know if you were home or not, but, that only works if you live alone really.2 -
February Goal
- Like the January and likely for the entire year, aspiring to hit a goal of 168 miles for the month. A short month, but doable!5 -

My first time joining a group like this. I'm not really an runner. My goal is to run a 10k in 2018.
Feb goal: 25 miles

Not even then... mine doesn't post to Strava until I'm done, at which point I'm already home. Unless I post an activity that is out of town and a local person (who already knows where I live) sees it right away and takes advantage. And that is part of why I buy insurance.
I'm probably at much higher risk of an escapee breaking into my house. There is a prison and a juvenile facility in my small town. The juveniles tend to leave very frequently. Usually they are trying to leave town and they go for easy targets (vehicles with keys inside). The kids are never as smart as the adults, who will actually break into an empty house for supplies before going further out of town. In neither case is the perpetrator using Strava anyway, but it is a bigger risk for me.1 -

Totally laughing out loud at work! Glad almost everyone else is gone for the day.
Did not run the last week of January because life happened - sick child on Friday, weather on Saturday, my dental bridge broke and I had an emergency dental appointment on Monday. Still haven't made it back out this week. But tomorrow starts February so I will be out in the morning!
Goal for February is 65 miles (it's a short month right?)3 -

in addition to this, use the Hidden Locations options. You can hide a radius of up to 5/8th of a mile around set postal codes - this means whilst a person can know the city you live in, they won't be able to see where exactly you start and finish your run, and so figure out where you live/work etc. You can do this for multiple addresses.
I figured out how to set it to Enhanced Security but where is the Hidden Locations option?1 -
Welcome to everyone joining this group for the first time! Very supportive and encouraging bunch of people! My goal for February is 110 miles (same as last month). Thought about increasing it but since February only has 28 days, I will wait until March and better weather!4

No, you just haven't yet admitted you're a runner. 10K is twice as far as most non-runners think they'll never be up to running.
True story: When I went in for a routine podiatrist visit, I whined that I was hardly running at all, maybe 18 miles in the month so far. The doctor looked at the intern and said, "How many miles have you run this month?" Intern: "Zero." Doctor: "Me, too."11 -
Feb goal: 140 mi
Other major goal: get my hamstring tweak and other lingering injuries under control before the 50K!

Big goal for the fall: 50 miler before I turn 50

Coming into February ready to (a) run Gord's 50k trail race for my birthday, (b) run 50k elite qualifying time at Gord's to get funding for Calgary 50k (c) run at least 550km on the month and not punk out like in January -_- and all while not bringing shame to my primary sponsor for the 2018 season, Salming Running North America (see what I did there? lollll). Secondary sponsorship agreement still being hammered out, so I can't name names on that one yet, but I hope to not shame them either

"Not an athlete" Newbie here. My daily step ranged from 2000 to 4000 and I am ready to change that!
Strategies:
1. Socks and Sneakers ready in car
2. Plan to take my faithful companion for walks (well, she probably will just drag me along)
3. Signed up for Charity Miles and other walking/running apps to motivate myself (including logging here)
February goal: 28 miles (A mile a day)

After looking over the 10k plan, it's looking like close to 80km this month.... However, it's February, and weather in Eastern Ontario sucks. I'll aim for a more realistic 50km since I'm not stuck to a deadline for the 10k.7

So a few weeks or so back I got the Garmin Footpod and have been running with it outside in "auto calibrate" mode. It really does not do anything for you if you have a good GPS signal, but it does use the GPS to calibrate the footpod.
Today was the first time I tried it without GPS. I ran on the dreadmill (very expensive fancy one at the gym, not my cheap belt slipping one at home) for my pace work and had these results:
Garmin with the footpod came up with:
Pretty darn close, especially since it took me a few seconds at least to remember to stop the Garmin. And I have this bonus info:
That is probably worthless to me It is pricey for the Garmin footpod, but at least it seems to work as advertised.

@nefariousjedi Welcome to the Group. Lots of other Non-Athletes in here who also enjoy taking their Hounds out for some quality time.
Also we should warn you about these two things that happen to Runners/athlete's.

@PastorVincent I was thinking about your post on January 27 about the 2 running styles Gliders or Gazelles and was thinking ( man my head hurts now ) that this might show up on the wear pattern on shoes. I am pretty sure that I am more of a Glider since I have to make a very conscious effort to lift the feet higher when doing Trails to clear the Roots, Rocks and other debris on the Trails.
Gazelles seem to have a very strong Toe Oriented Push off - Heel Landing so I expect the Heel and Toes of the shoes to be worn down.
Gliders seem to have a similar push off but Landing more on the Ball of the Foot so I expect the Ball of the foot to be worn down more. Like the shoes you showed a picture of, and in examining mine that's where I have the most amount of wear.
I know a lady in Grande Prairie who runs in the 4:30/km consistently and seems like a Gazelle type form, the toes of her shoes always look like they have worn through the Tread Layer to the Foot Bed sub layer but the ball of the foot looks fine - like the shoes have lots of life left in them. Fortunately she wins enough events that have Shoes as Prizes she usually has a few in reserve.

I'll answer here to post from January.
@7lenny7 , I really should start doing warm-ups, Runkeeper has that option when making a custom workout, but I've been ignoring it... Partly because in the past when I was just starting, 5 minute light jog as a warm up sounded like something impossible.
@shanaber , I do it whenever I think about it, but lazy abs start to slack after 2 minutes or so.
According to PT I'm hypermobile, which in combination with a desk job leads to weak core, and spine not being supported enough. Pain is the worst in the mornings (actually at night as it sometimes wakes me up when I try to roll over) and gets better towards the evening. I try to do core strength exercises every evening, cause I know they help, but lazyness wins sometimes.
@garygse , that's still 2 extra cookies! but actually pretty discouraging math.
@juliet3455 , love the cartoons, especially the last one. :-D
I like this comic A LOT, "kill the blerch" used to be my running mantra.
Welcome to all newbies, take it easy, don't try to run 10K in an hour on your first try. Better run slower than get injured.
