There are so many factors that effect weight. Gender age fitness genetics stress sleep menstruation etc etc. To think that a simple math equation if energy expenditure regulates weight is ludicrous.
BTW, up until a few years ago I used to think calories caused me to be obese. I'm glad I know better now.
We've known the world was spherical for at least 2000 years.
You didn't eat the same maintenance calories that you do at 195.
There are many factors that impact weight, but CICO accounts for ~90% of this. Nutritional content does not override caloric density concerned with weight management.
And known within the margin of error of the available instruments the approximate circumference.
Columbus cooked the books/math on the size when he went looking for backers.
Follow the money... lol!
Amazing if you study history following the money is typically all it takes. Following the money/power resolves many mysteries.
I'm still amazed that anyone can think that sailors ever believed the world was flat. Sailors live or die based on their ability to observe and react. Greek sailors knew the world was "curved" simply due to line of sight limitations when out on open water.2 -

This is what we were taught in school in the 50's and 60's, though (at least I was). It was an eye-opener to learn years later that actually this wasn't true. And a real-life lesson on why it's so important to continue your education throughout life.1 -

Aztec4Life wrote: »I laugh out loud. I wonder how our ancestors regulated weight before they knew what calories were? Or every other species on the planet? Or the 99% of people on earth who dont track calories?
Plenty of our ancestors were overweight when their food intake exceeded their activity and dieting is not new at all.
This timeline is interesting. http://www.bbc.co.uk/timelines/z9nfyrd
Animals can be overweight if provided enough food. In the wild food isn't usually abundant enough or fat animals do not catch food. http://sciencenordic.com/can-wild-animals-become-overweight
Looks like people have been trying to measure calories burned has been around since the 1700's so must have had some idea about it. The word calorie was termed in the 1800's.
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/we-used-to-actually-set-food-on-fire-to-figure-out-how-many-calories-it-had-197666/

https://physicalculturestudy.com/2016/05/05/the-history-of-calorie-counting/
Knowing about calories does not equal weight regulation. Not knowing about calories does not equal being overweight.
A person gains, loses or maintains weight depending on the relationship of the calories they take in to the calories they burn. It does not rquire knowlege of calories to do so just like you can be alive without knowing how your heart, lungs or nervous system works but you can be healthier using the knowledge. Using our knowledge of calories we can more reliably regulate our weight.
More than 99 % of people on Earth are aware of calories even if they do not actively track them for weight management.7 -

Even the Bible references the Earth being round. The Bible.
We didn't figure it out just a few hundred years ago.
well- I mean- does it count if a made up story says it?
We definitely disagree on that one.
All you have to do is reference politics and you'll have hit the trifecta...
Has CICO replaced money on the "uncomfortable things to start talking about at a dinner party" list (or whatever you want to call it)?
I think that depends on whether or not your friends have started selling It Works or Thrive...6 -

Greek sailors knew the world was "curved" simply due to line of sight limitations when out on open water.
The second you get anywhere "not near land" (I mean- even with it just barely visible- or with it at your back- you can see the earth is curved.

Wait- you disagree that the bible is a collection of made up stories? Did I read that properly?
Are you challenging someone else's religious beliefs? Did I read that properly?
I would say even most religious people know that the stories in the bible are made up. They are stories to get teachings across, not facts or historically accurate accounts of anything. They are like kids shows that try to teach a lesson within each show, even though the show is made up it can still be relevant.18 -

I know plenty of religious people who believe that the accounts in the Bible represent literal historical truth. This is why things like evolution are such a hot button topic in American education (in some areas, anyway).11 -

I was trying to clarify about the bible being made up or if we were disagreeing about the bible referring to the world being round or being flat.
We will indeed have to disagree on the bible situation- but I can agree the bible is old and references the earth being flat.
Furthermore- it IS the debate section- If @Carlos_421 and I WANTED to debate the merits of the bible's validity- we could. There is nothing wrong with that. We are adults- and its' a debate section- it doesn't make a me horrible person. He's entitled to believe what he wants. I think he's capable of having an adult conversation about the validity of his faith or not. I can respect that either way.
Being said- @Carlos_421- I had no idea you were a minister- that was/is- a surprise to me!!!11 -
Calories In vs Calories Out is the most underrated concept in the entire weight loss industry.
It applies at all times, even when calories are not counted. It even applies to ancient civilizations that didn't know what a calories was.16 -

Gotcha. Yeah, I was saying that we disagree about the Bible being fiction. We agree that people who lived in Biblical times knew the Earth was round.5 -

I don't know a single Biblical literalist. I'm certain they exist and make for excellent strawmen, but don't serve much purpose in furthering understanding.
There are multiple supporting secular accounts - most notable being Josephus & Tacitus. There are parables and there are accounts of history. You cannot simply disregard the base of work because the intent is misrepresented.12 -
This thread has taken so many unexpected twists and turns. I can't wait to see where it goes next!
