Yes. Usually they'll throw guards first so just outside the rings so you can tuck rocks behind them so they're protected

Got it !! Thank you for making more sense of this ! It’s a compelling sport for sure.

It's a fun sport to play. I took it up 3 years ago... Aiming for Beijing 2022.... Not really. But it's my joke

Haha nah some of the best curlers I've played with are in their 60s and 70s but perhaps for the Olympics one is better to be younger

    Belinda Carlisle

I'm reading her autobiography. Anytime I read bios & such, I always have to google a bunch more photos of the person...

Ah. Sounds potentially embarrassing. I didn’t see any curling tonight. Was it on ?

The Canadian men beat the Japanese. I think it's the final round Robin games. Women's is on in 10 minutes
My main love the ice dance final just ended up the way it should have. Yay

Oh something you might hear is a hog line violation. That means they held onto the rock past the hog line down the end where they are delivery the rocks. Delivery is the slide to launch the rock

Plus it’s interesting to listen to them talk to each other and go over strategy. Even if I can’t understand the words - I wish more sports were like that

Ya it's neat eh. It can be annoying when you're sweeping with all your night and being told to sweep harder. I usually tell the skip st that point we are going as hard as we can haha

Does everyone have to “launch” stones ?
  • AliNouveau
    AliNouveau Posts: 36,287 Member
Yup. Only the skip doesn't really sweep.
The positions are lead, second, vice and skip. Lead and second sweep every rock, vice becomes the skip when the skip throws his or her rocks.

Here’s a question I thought of last night. With all this sweeping, doesn’t the ice change after each pass ? Are the sweep brushes all the same ?
  • AliNouveau
    AliNouveau Posts: 36,287 Member
Well there's been some controversy there because a new broom head was developed Thst would actually change the ice. They're illegal now. I think they'd actually make grooves in the ice.

The idea with sweeping is to remove the pebble and make a smooth surface for the rock to glide over. Sweeping is done to get the rock to go farther or to keep it straight. So rocks Thst are going fast get swept sometimes if they aren't on the right trajectory

Pebble? I also think it’s cool that there are no referees. All self regulated.

Pebble is the bumps on the ice. They spray it with water so it's bumpy. What's why you can walk on it it's not smooth. It's very civilized and for club leagues you all sit around after with drinks
