I forgot to mention, this was the first serious run (did like 5 or 7 miles with them previously) with the Alta Lone Peak 3.5s. They are a "zero drop" shoe and my other shoes are 8 to 12mm drop so that was a bit of a risk I guess. They did very well holding to the ground and even getting traction in soft mud. The few times I did slip it was either cause I caught my toe on a root, or something really slippery like algae covered rocks.
I did not notice any difference while running with the 0 drop. When I first put them on they felt weird but only briefly.1 -

A couple miles less than I wanted this week but I'm ok with that. I am doing them Monday so next week will have a few extras. LOL It all works out in the end. Shaved a few seconds off my average pace this long run. I might have to drop to the half marathon in November because at my current pace it will take me the 5 hour time limit to do the half marathon. Crossing my fingers and hope my speed (slow but faster than current) comes back after a few months of heart rate training. At least dropping to the half is easy and can be a game time decision.7 -
Got in a quick 5.2 km on the treadmill this afternoon putting me at 88.3 for the month.
61.7 left to hit my (new) goal of 150!6 -
The short version of today is I am not good at running marathons, but I AM good at finishing difficult things.
Basically the slowest pacer was running 15 seconds per kilometer faster than he was supposed to be (is that 24 sec/mi?) and I stupidly went with them. You all can figure out the rest. We hit the halfway mark 10 minutes earlier than we should have, and that's pretty much where the wheels fell off. A bunch of us fell off the back of the pace group, but didn't stick together very well. I slowly caught and passed a bunch of guys over the next 21km, but it wasn't very satisfying because we were all in pretty bad shape. No PR by 7 minutes, but I finished, and that was enough of an accomplishment for today. Also around kilometers 23-24 I had a nice conversation about Jesus with a guy whose shirt was clearly inviting conversation. I needed a diversion from coming to terms with my went-out-too-fast predicament, so I took the bait and I think we both came away from it feeling like we were able to share our faith and be encouraged despite our differences. Refreshing.
Current goals: recover well, then concentrate on half marathons and speed before going back into marathon training, so that something like this won't throw me off next time. I would've been perfectly happy with a half marathon today! But I've been wearing my medal all day. I earned it!
Upcoming races:
5/13 Lublin Marathon -DONE!
6/2 Solidarność Half Marathon
6/30 Silesian Highland Half Marathon (TRAIL race!)
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k19 -
@PastorVincent congratulations on your amazing accomplishment of an ultra after a PR marathon. It's not even something I can comprehend so I just say WOW and hope you are treating yourself well and very gently in recovery.
@polskagirl01 you DID earn that medal and you are good at difficult things. Sounds like you recovered as well as possible from the pacer being so far off.
I took the day off from running and went on a nice long hike with my Stella. It was a challenging one with all kinds of rocks and downed trees and poor footing so we took it slowly, but it was a fun time. Stella was brave and a good trail leader, and she almost caught a few little snakes.4 -
I love reading everyone's race reports. Congratulations everyone.
A 5k road race for me this morning. I'd been dithering all week about whether or not to run it because my calf has been niggling me for the past couple of weeks and this has played havoc with my training for next weekend's HM.
I decided to run and thought maybe I'd take it slowly, but that idea went out of the window as soon as I set off. What I did do though, was to wear my old Saucony's rather than my Brooks, because I was wondering whether it was my shoes causing me problems. Anyhoo, I finished in 27:49 which is a good speed for me, and my legs feel great. I'll be doing a few more gentle 5k's this week in readiness for the HM. And I think I'll stick with the Saucony's. I like the Brooks, but I don't trust them yet.
The race was a Mothers' Day race and it raises money for families who have lost their mum due to cancer. I lost my mum to pancreatic cancer just before Thanksgiving last year, so I was definitely a bit teary-eyed at the start line. It's a lovely race. Plenty of sadness, but lots of love and strength too.12 -
@polskagirl01 Well done! It is the stick-to-it-ness that really differentiates a distance runner from the rest of the crowd. The mental fortitude to keep going even through failure and mistakes is built mile by mile (err kilometer by kilometer ). Well done, you deserve that medal for sure.1
-
@BruinsGal_91 Those shoes definitely sound suspicious right now. I would run with the Saucony's for a bit and see if the problem goes away. If it does, try the Brooks again and see if it comes back. If it does, take the shoes out back and shoot them.1

Did my long run today, and it was very good. Target was 9 miles at 9:45 pace. I got 9 miles at 9:43 pace, and it actually felt good as though I could have done more (I didn't have time). I was well rested, and it was cool (60F) and overcast. Those factors definitely helped. I've had a lot of terrible runs lately, so it was good to finally feel good about a run.

SEE! This is the problem with you ultra people! I just got this comment on my Facebook page in reply to my post about the 50k:
Sheesh!7 -
Y'all I'm dithering. I want to do the Canada Day road race. There's 2 distances, 5K and 15K. If I do the 5K, my husband and kids can do the family 2.5K and we should all finish around the same time. But I kind of would rather do the 15K except that means my family would be waiting around for me for at least an hour because I'm slow.
Prices increase next Sunday so I guess I'd better figure it out!1 -
@polskagirl01 @BruinsGal_91 Loved reading your race reports. Congratulations to both of you!1

Do the 15k and tell them to go get ice cream.7 -

I can't believe it's taken me so long to think that maybe it's the shoes. I'm definitely wearing the Saucony's for the half marathon, and then I'll go back to the Brooks and see what happens. I'm so annoyed, because they felt really good (I had the gait analysis done and tried out four different pairs) and it was a toss-up between them and another pair of Saucony's. I should have gone with my gut and stuck with the devil I knew.0 -
So, I probably did a dumb, but I did a long run today. First long run in almost a year.
I was toying with the idea anyways, but then last night I ended up at a little middle of nowhere steakhouse that is among my favorite restaurants ever... like my travel schedule hasn’t had me in this area in almost a year. Yet, I walk in, get called by name and given a hug. Well, when I asked for a box for my leftover steak, they handed me that box, a box of the fancy salad for the night, and a box with the “ooey gooey chocolate cake” ... no charge... because they knew I was staying in a hotel and apparently didn’t think leftover steak was enough of a treat. (Seriously y’all, if you are ever doing a black hills/sturgis/ devils tower/ etc trip- hit me up, you need this place in your life)
But anyways, now I need to make room for ooey gooey chocolate cake in my eating plan, with no gym in town to lift in. So, attempt a long run it is.
It was a very slow 6.3 miles of run 3min walk 2min intèrvals, but I made it. There was probably a quarter mile in the first 2 miles where ankle suggested I abort, but I somehow got that worked out on a walk interval and it seemed fine after that little protest.
It was over 3min/mile slower than I ran Boulder this time last year, and this time last year I was calling 5-6 miles a normal weeknight run- rather than a long run, but if I can still walk tomorrow I’m calling it a major win!
6.3 today and according to tired maths and strava data I think that puts me at 13.5/30
And since I am in a hotel- recovery so far is consisting of pool and hot tub time while I do laundry- because laundry in the pool area all of a sudden makes perfect sense!8 -

Hmm, this idea has merit.6 -

I was gonna make the same suggestion as PV. Except pancakes.2 -

I do not see that these suggestions have to be mutually exclusive.6 -
You are all a bunch of enablers6

@polskagirl01 Congratulations on the race today!
Also, thanks for the training advice. I'm definitely planning to work towards the ability of doing the 20 mile run, fully ready to bail. It so easy to get bought in to the big runs with all the motivation.
@hanlonsk Cake, long run, steak?? I want to be you! Livin' the dream!
DH went on another run today. I responsibly declined even though I feel I could have done 5-6 miles... Slowly. Without cake.4 -

Wineglass Marathon 9/30
Ugh, life has really gotten in the way this week. I missed a whole week of running, which was out of my control, but I am frustrated with myself because I don’t want to screw up my marathon training. I should have done a 9 mile long run today, but I could only fit 5 into my schedule. I need to sit down later this week when things calm down and see how I can adjust my schedule to get back on track.
On the plus side, hubby and I are traveling to NY at the end of the month, so I plan to go over the whole route of Wineglass while I am there to get a feel for what to expect.7 -
@PastorVincent love the ultra report. Can't see myself doing one. Happy Mother's day to all the moms especially those that deal with running children and spouses. Enjoyed the Mothers day brunch but I just can't eat like that and paid the price the rest of the day. Rest day killer interval workout this week.0

Soccer tournament this weekend and family in town gave me some excuses for not getting out until today. Ultimately, just missed some dedicated walking miles as I’ll make up the shakeout run tomorrow night. Beautiful weekend for the soccer games and was great weather for the run this afternoon.

Today's notes – Mind games today.
Back story: Friday about 5 PM I got a shingles vaccine. Sore arm, didn't worry about it, Saturday at 7:30 AM I went for a long run. About 10 miles in I was wiped, wondering WTF? Yeah, it was raining; but not as hard as Boston, and it was warmer than Boston, and 12 miles into Boston I was still thinking negative splits might be possible. Afterwards, I connected the dots with the vaccination. Then the rest of the day I felt like a convalescent - good for a couple hours, then need a nap. Then good for a couple more hours, then need another nap.
This morning I felt okay, went to church, came home feeling a bit sub-par. Had trouble sorting out whether this was residual from the vaccination, or normal from the weekend and Sunday morning routine messing with my sleep and eating patterns. Decided to give myself more recovery and go run maybe 5 PM-ish. Dithered about taking today as a rest day, then running tomorrow on my scheduled rest day. But I have administrative stuff scheduled for the rest day today, so I got out about 5:15 PM.
My porch thermometer said 74º F. So I threw on shorts and a singlet, and prepared for a hot run. Garmin said 68º F (20º C). It felt more like 68 than 74, and the humidity wasn't terribly high; but I was careful to keep it easy. Adjusted the route on the fly. Less than a mile in, I committed to at least 10K. 5 miles in, I knew I wanted more. Adjusted the end of the route to be close to 8, and ran past my driveway just enough for the watch to click over to 8 miles. Average pace, 7:42 per mile. Average HR, 128; max HR 142; 41% HR Zone 2, 58% HR Zone 1. I'll call that a good job of keeping things easy.
And I felt great after running 8 miles. Not wiped out like yesterday. I think being wiped out was really the vaccination, and doing a long run 14 hours after getting the shingles shot wasn't the brightest thing I've done all year; but I lived through it, and life looks more normal now.

6.29 km Peavey Loop Explorer. Copied a course from a previous run since I did not have my watch with me.
A short Explorer of the construction of the new Railway crossing Bridge and roads for the new Bridge over the Peace River. It seems like we went from 0C to +29C overnight. Having a hard time to adjust to this quick change of temperature.
