June Self-Care Challenge

@Orphia I started the Handstand challenge. I'm pretty sure they are being untruthful when they say anyone can achieve sufficient strength within 28 days - I do military presses all the time and no way are my arms strong enough to hold 150 lbs over my head, inverted. But nevertheless I'm gonna try it. I have so many bookshelves that it was hard to find a wall, but I did the plank and walk your feet up thing, as instructed. Will let everyone know how it goes.4

Today I intended to have a lazy day but got caught up decluttering stuff and selling it online which took longer than intended and wasn’t so relaxing, but I got rid of some craft supplies that have been taking up space in my craft room for far too long. I also found a new guilty pleasure British show on Netflix.5

Breakfast outside with DH & then a 77min hike together! Gorgeous trees.
Watched a delightful movie & relaxed after a nap4 -
Yesterday I spent 20 minutes listening to Pema Chodron's Getting Unstuck talk - while sitting on my meditation bench.3

Yesterday i got to get almost caught up on one of the tv shows i enjoy1

i love logging in to this thread after a day or two away and reading all these!! i am in need of some self-care this week, had a tough weekend, but will take some time to do something good for me this evening! lots of great ideas here! ❤️2

Came back from acupuncture; he put the needles all over my sinus and ear area and I felt my ears unclog and can breath much better this evening. I worked out at the gym. I cooked breakfast for the kids. Just making some progress doing things around the house but still feel mindful and relaxed.3

Today I bought lunch and ate with a coworker outside on a beautiful day, and I cleaned and decluttered for about 30 minutes and my house is finally shaping up! I want to get rid of lots of stuff this summer because my house is packed pretty tightly.5

Yesterday deep cleaned the living room in preparation for the new sofa. Rediscovered all the cat toys which have been under the sofa since forever.
Still doing the handstand challenge thing. Wall planking for 60 seconds at a time is making my shoulders feel like someone punched me in the arm muscle! I need to find a way to get more room next to the wall, I don't really have enough space to practice the pivoting bit. Whether or not this helps me achieve a handstand, it's going to improve my arm strength.2 -
Finally pulled up my big girl panties and got on the elliptical for ten minutes. I knew I'd enjoy it when I finally worked myself up to actually start.4

Watched a fun movie3 -
Yesterday I spent over 2 hours outside on the patio - ate lunch there, and hung out with my daughter when she came home from school. Went for a 30 min walk and listened to Getting Unstuck for more self understanding.3

Did some clearing of the mind about stuff I got upset about at work. Still bothered this morning but I was able to get to sleep instead of ruminating on it5

I like to think about the quote: There are over 7 billion people on earth and you're going to let 1 person ruin your day?
I am not minimizing what happened to you at work, but I try to do some self talk and remind myself that I've been through this before and worse and survived. Sending you a big hug.2 -

I really have to look for getting unstuck. Is it on youtube?0 -
This makes day 4 of being upside down every day - still doing wall planks, getting brave enough to actually lift one hand and walk back towards the wall. Still a very long way from a handstand! But it's good to try things outside my comfort zone, and this definitely is.
Sat outside this morning and did some writing. The heat is getting to be brutal, but sitting outside is helping me adjust better than I have in previous years. Or maybe it's just being skinnier.
I bought silly stuff for my birthday! (Which is Thursday.) Was out running errands with my husband and he encouraged me. So now I have crazy purple press on nails, purple hair spray, and a tiara. (Also: a blaster.) Apparently I get to be a space princess for my 50th birthday. My family was not the sort to throw birthday parties, so it's kind of groovy for me. Since two years ago I really wasn't sure I would make it to fifty, and last year I was too busy adjusting to life as a diabetic and stressing over the food to enjoy my birthday at all, I feel like I have reason to celebrate.

Took my 3 oldest kids to see the new Jurassic World movie. We all enjoyed it, though three of them spent most of the movie in hysterical tears. And one of those is 17!8

@JulieAL1969 I don't know if it's available in its entirety on youtube. I have it on audible.2

June 12: took a much needed 2-hour nap!!!
June 13: are my breakfast outside & relaxed. Took photos of the blooming flowers! Then read a research study on cruciferous vegetables and how they decrease risk of cancer.
Interesting things I learned:
* 1% of food sold in Japan is radish
* Their daily intake of crucifers is 5-fold that of American’s
* If Americans all ate 5 servings of veg & fruit, estimates are that cancer would be reduced by 20%
* Cruciferous vegetables prevent cancer more than 5-servings of veg/fruit a day
* There are over 300 crucifers
* Arugula is a cruciferous veggie!
I LOVE learning!! I’m sold! I’m adding at least one cruciferous veggie a day from now on!
Broccoli was shown to reduce risk of all cancers. Yum!3 -

Japanese radishes are awesome! If you aren't familiar with the different varieties of Korean and Japanese radishes, they are worth going to a foreign market to try. Grated as a garnish, thinly sliced as crudités, pickled, and cooked in soup stock.2 -
Yesterday I had the patio umbrella up because it was raining off and on. I intended to take a nap outside. But after about 5 minutes, I heard this noise - a tick tick sound of little paws on the patio. I looked and there was a nice sized groundhog heading my way. I jumped up out of the chair, and instead of it running the other way, it ran past me, and under the deck. It never came back out. I looked underneath the deck, and saw a fairly new mound of dirt next to the house. Great. Now we have a ground hog hole under the deck. That totally ruined my wanting to take a rest. Now I have to figure out how to make the critter abandon its hole. It's not the most easily accessible area. A couple of years ago, one tried to dig a tunnel by the front steps - but I was able to make it leave by filling the hole and putting things on top of it to prevent access.
I also took a walk in the rain and listened to my self help recording for 30 minutes.
I need to get back into my other hobbies.3 -
Painted a picture of palm trees and the ocean and small sailboats. Didn't like my painting at all, but I told myself the gift was in the process , the doing, the mindfulness of the brush on the canvas .... overall very peaceful art class5

I deactivated Twitter and Facebook for a couple of days to focus on other things.
I'm gathering plastics to recycle this weekend.
I made plans to take my stepdad to the bookstore for Father's Day (even though I personally dislike that store, he loves it and deserves a nice day out).
I'm purposely skipping a family reunion for the sake of my mental health.
I just put a post-it note on my shelf that says "Remember Your Doctors". It's a reminder that when I'm at the end of my rope with anxiety and systemic disease, my doctors have saved my life and continue to treat me with utmost respect and kindness. They make my fight worth it.
