@shanber @elise4270 @skippygirlsmom as always, the back yard is open for camping. Currently, there is NOT a river of lava running thru it! (tho if elise wins the lotto, one of the resorts is a better choice.)
@PastorVincent mutts are the best!
It be like Woodstock, but with runners! y'all shake your voodoo sticks, pray your prayers, zen your zen-bonies and I'll buy a lottery ticket and we'll all go to Hawaii for tattoos, good food, comradrarie and new running gear... then talk @7lenny7 in to taking us sailing. And go visit @girlinahat because her jobs the coolest.
Ok. Enough dreaming. Time to embrace another day in paradise, uh thats work yall. Back to work.7 -
@PastorVincent Beautiful puppy! Mutts are the best, my girl, Emma, is a Shep/Lab mix, shelter dog as well. Was talking to my vet about the craziness of the prices for all these "designer dogs", when I was a kid, we called them "mutts". She smiled and said "they still are, just people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for them now".
As a trial run for the #SportsBraSquad Day on Sunday, I decided to do a run this morning without a shirt. Hey, at 5am, who is really gonna gawk? lol At first, it was, ya, a bit weird. But after a few minutes I was more focused on me, and it really didn't matter, and yes, it WAS cooler! Might have to do more runs like this.

@PastorVincent - Awww, sounds like you still miss him. I still miss my Golden that died in 2012! We still bring up stories about him. My little mutt now is quite a character as well!
I did NOT want to get out of bed to run this morning. Although I'm working this summer (first time in 20 years ), I can go in later so I get to run in the daylight. But why does a 5:27 alarm seem worse than a 4:07 alarm? Anyway, I set out and it felt great! It wasn't as hot! Then on the drive into work the person on the radio said that the dew point is lower today!!! First time I've EVER heard that mentioned except in here!
So it was a really nice run and of course, I am so glad I went!
Tomorrow starting a new lifting program - the Transform App. Yikes...

Day 2 of dosage adjustment. Feeling slightly less funky than yesterday, but still a bit off. Yesterday I needed some Benadryl to curb the nervousness. We'll see if I need any today.
Since I had a late run yesterday I stuck to walking this morning. 5k, half of which was uphill.
It's a gloomy and rainy day here. I'm glad I was able to get my exercise done in the morning today because the thought of walking in that atrium just does not appeal.8 -
June goal: 75 miles
6/3: 6.5 miles
6/5: 4.3 miles
6/6: 4.5 miles
6/7: 5 miles
6/10: 7.2 miles
6/12: 4.3 miles

6/14: 4.5 miles
6/15: 3.4 miles
6/17: 6.5 miles
6/19: 5.2 miles
55.9/75 miles
I got 5.2 miles in this morning and kept my pace under 12 minutes the whole time. The temperature was 75F which wasn't too bad, but the dew point was 68 and the humidity was 84% so I was drenched by the time I got home. It definitely made me think about the #sportsbrasquad. Today would have been a good day to run sans shirt. You are brave @dreamer12151.
I am in for the Hawaii trip when @Elise4270 wins the lottery. I would love to camp in @HonuNui back yard as long as she takes us snorkeling.

I think I might have blown my 60 mile monthly goal, but so it goes. I run outdoors or I don't run, and when there’s a heat advisory for two days and thunderstorms and a tornado watch, I do not run outdoors. I finally made it out yesterday evening and in light of the conversation about “bad runs” this one could have been better: I was tense about cars being able to see me, people definitely drive worse at 8:30 PM than 6:30 AM (or at least more people are on the road), it was still more humid than I’d like, I was really indecisive about my route, it was really buggy down by the lake, and so on and so forth. I started off too fast and got a PR for my first mile, then had to walk a bit in the middle, but still made a good overall time.
And f-it, I ran, so that was good.
I was hoping to make it around a new lake this weekend but my long runs just haven’t been happening. My longest run is still May 12th and I’d hoped to keep pushing that up, but various things have gotten in the way. I haven't done more than 3 miles at a go since June 2nd. That said, I need to chill out and stop stressing about not increasing my mileage as much week-to-week as is “ideal” or whatever. This is a crazy busy month with two trips and lots of OT at the new job and a heat advisory and working in the garden and so on and so forth. I'm still running. Everything else is gravy.

Last workout run today before Sunday's 10K race! Since we're so close to race day, this one was definitely on the shorter/easier side. 2 miles easy to warm up, then drills and a few strides. The workout was 2x1 mile repeats at 5K pace (splits were 6:55, 6:59) with 3 minutes rest between the miles, then 2x 1/4 mile repeats at mile pace (splits were 1:34, 1:34) with 90 seconds rest between. Cooled down for 2.5 miles to bring the total to 7 miles. I did this same workout 5 weeks ago on the tuesday before my last 10K, and I am pleased to say that I was a little faster this time and, more importantly, it felt easier. Definitely a good confidence-boosting last workout before my race!
In other news, I set a new PR during this run for red-winged blackbird attacks! I was attacked 5 different times, my old record was 3 attacks on a run last year. Does anyone else have to deal with these devils every year?? They are a huge nuisance in Chicago, especially along the lake front trail
(picture is not mine)
Upcoming Races
06/07: Strides for Peace 5K PR and 3rd OA - 21:59
06/24: Chicago 10K
07/22: Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 10K
10/07: Chicago Marathon

@Elise4270 I am in for the MFP trip to Hawaii when you win that lottery. I will even get a tattoo if everyone else is!
That little dog IS adorable.
@katharmonic I think in the dream i chickened on the tattoo. I want one, but i dont want one. Haha! I'll get a temporary one WHEN we go.
The morale of this story is @Elise4270 has to get the tattoo first to make sure we don't all get one and she chickens out.
@zdyb23456 she is precious! Skip could swim the length of olympic sized pool by the time she was 20 months old. The first time she dove down in 12 feet of water to get something off the bottom she was around 22 months and I thought I would have a heart attack. We lived at the beach so I wanted to be sure she could swim really early in life. She's still a fishy.5 -
Maybe I should stop setting mileage goals; somehow it never seems to work out well for me. The weather and my work schedule conspired to only allow me to run once last week again, on Saturday. Once more, I struggled in the heat and finished less than 2.5 miles. Today, I got back on schedule and went to the gym to run on the treadmill. I did 2.99 miles this morning and didn't struggle as much; hopefully I can get it together before my 5k this coming Saturday! The good news is that, although my endurance has taken a hit lately, my "comfortable" pace continues to gradually inch upwards.
June goal: 40.0 miles
Today: 2.99 miles
Total so far: 7.63 miles6 -
@ariceroni we have them up here too along most of our trails and paths (SE Wisconsin)
so far i've not been attacked but it might have to do with the dogs0 -
@shanaber yipes!
@PastorVincent what a precious face on your pup. Sorry for your loss. We have a Labradoodle and she is without a doubt the most expensive mutt I have ever had. We wanted a big, non shedding dog that wouldn’t bother Skip’s asthma. Looked for months in shelters and nothing…so we went with the Labradoodle. Nothing like a good mutt.
@mbaker566 how could anyone see that face and not take that baby to foster
@RespectTheKitty glad you are feeling better
@ariceroni what’s with the freaking birds? Wow never heard of a bird being so aggressive unless it’s a blue jay guarding its nest.
2 -
@ariceroni yep, I was dive-bombed by two or three female red-wings during my lunchtime walk last week. I assume I must have got a little too close to a nest.
Saw a kingfisher and a hummingbird on today's walk, which was cool.3 -
I just had a bad thing happen and need help from anyone who has experienced something similar...
I ran this morning, several hours ago. For the last several hours, I've just been sitting at my desk at work mostly. I left for lunch. When I stood up from my car, turned, and started walking away from it, I felt something snap behind my left knee. It was immediately very painful... a sharp pain. This was 40 min. ago and it is still painful, but not as much. If I fully extend my knee, it is unbear-able. I don't know what it is in the back of my knee, but I can barely walk so I may not run until this is fixed.
I know, I should see a physician. But has anyone experienced something similar that can give some insight?6 -

Ouch! I have no experience with this pain.
Who had the baker's cyst?
You have any swelling? Idk if you could have torn your mensicus?
Definitely get in to see the doc ASAP.1 -

@rheddmobile Does this sound like what happened when you ruptured the Baker's cyst?0 -
@Scott6255 - I read recently, in RW I think, that running slower than your natural gait would allow can also throw off your form making it feel much harder too. @mobycarp might have some advice on that and your achilles.
@Scott6255 - Yes, running slower than your natural pace can mess up your form. If you have any sort of weakness/injury to recover from, it can hurt worse to run too slow than to run at a natural pace.
That having been said . . . DO NOT run through Achilles pain. If you know you have an Achilles injury, do not even run through Achilles ache that feels like a training ache. It isn't, and you risk putting yourself on the couch for an extended period of time.
I have had the experience of running with an Achilles sensation that wasn't comfortable, but wasn't really pain; having a great race; and then being unable to run at all the next day and needing months of couch time. I know a guy who has run and coached for decades and had the experience of an Achilles popping in the middle of a race; he limped to the finish line, then was unable to run at all for months and months.
For right now . . . I had a good race on Sunday. Nothing hurt. Monday was a scheduled rest day, and my 2 minute hallway jog indicated that I should not run at all. Today is a scheduled club practice day. My 2 minute hallway jog was kind of iffy with the Achilles sensations, maybe it would be okay to run an easy 2 for warmup at club practice.
But I'm taking an extra rest day today. I was okay running every other day last week, and I ran hard for not quite 3 miles on Sunday. Two rest days in a row won't kill me, and I'll see how the Achilles feels tomorrow morning.
I'm *kitten* sick and tired of being too optimistic about how much I can do, then spending weeks or months on the couch. I'd rather run 3 times a week for a total of 8 miles than not run at all for 8 weeks. Maybe I could get away with an easy 2 today; but that's not a risk I have to take, and after several experiences with the couch it's not a risk I'm willing to take.
I know, you have a marathon in January. I have a marathon at the end of September. I'm not running enough to train for it; but if I'm on the couch in September, it won't matter how many miles I ran in June.6 -

@rheddmobile Does this sound like what happened when you ruptured the Baker's cyst?
The cyst was a noticeable but painless bulge which caused pressure on the back of my knee before it ruptured during a side stretch, and a sharp stinging when it ruptured, followed by severe swelling and pain in the calf which came up gradually continued to worsen over several days. The knee itself got less uncomfortable after the rupture because the pressure was relieved. But I understand my case was fairly unusual and it's more usual for a rupture to be so painful you can't put weight on the leg. The main thing with a ruptured cyst is that your muscles don't appreciate being doused in synovial fluid so there is significant calf swelling which mimics the appearance of a blood clot.
I've had an acl tear in the past and this sounds more similar to that - occurred during turning, snapping sensation, followed by pain - except that I would expect serious swelling with an acl. Maybe meniscus? Regardless get to a doctor pronto, there are lots of cases where quick intervention makes a difference. If I had gotten my cyst drained before it ruptured it would have saved me months of trouble.
1 -
Thanks for your sage advice and wisdom @MobyCarp. I hear what you are saying, and I will keep the running shoes in the closet for a few more days (at least). I still feel a sensation if I do any kind of hop or sudden weight shift on my left leg, so I will not risk running. I hate to miss my mileage goal, but that is so inconsequential compared to getting seriously injured and being on the couch for months.
@midwesterner85 I sincerely hope your knee pain is a very temporary anomaly and nothing major! I don't really have any experience with knee pain (knock on wood)!4 -
Finally got in a run, had to stay up til 2 am to do it. Getting up early isn't working for me since I have to talk to out of country work associates late nights. It was still hot with a dewpoint of 73 but much better than 100 degrees in the sun. Also my husband threw up from running with dinner on his stomach. We will have to get the hang of this.
Unlike my poor husband I had a pretty good run, 33 and change for 5k despite stopping to see if he was okay. I feel like I'm able to stride out more - I have been running really slowly trying to keep my knee from swelling - and this morning the knee is possibly a little warm but otherwise fine.
I wish we could run at night without having to run this neighborhood. We passed a guy leaving his house and getting into a car with a gun in his hand which he stuck into his waistband. He was wearing an apron so my guess is he was on his way into work and doesn't like the neighborhood any more than I do, but it still gave me a turn.
6 -
@midwesterner85 I hope it's nothing serious.
@rheddmobile that is really scary that someone feels they need to carry a gun to get into their car. I'm sorry your neighborhood is not safe.1 -
In perhaps direct defiance of my post this morning about chilling out, but in the spirit of being a stubborn mo-fo, I decided this afternoon was the time to finally run around that lake. And I MADE IT! At least, I made it in the sense that I got all the way from my house to the lake, around the lake, and back to my house under my own power. I actually was feeling pretty okay until just past mile 3 when I discovered why one shouldn’t wear *kitten* cotton socks while running, especially in 96% humidity. My first running blister! I don’t suppose anyone can recommend any good (ideally cheap-ish) socks for road running?
I’ve been running some zippy (for me) miles recently. If I hadn’t had that overly fast opening mile yesterday, my second and third miles today would have been my fastest miles since I started tracking. I’m not sure what that’s about, but I’m okay with it. Even at that pace I think I could have kept running if that blister hadn’t started yelling at me. I think the next couple of days will be no-run days for sure.

Last day of my trip and it cooled down considerably due to storms overnight, but still really humid for my run this am. Found a nice park with trails through the woods so I would be mostly in the shade, although it was threatening rain. Turned out to be a pretty place to run and I saw this deer up close - didn't even move when I got out the camera or when I ran past within a few feet.
It was fairly hilly with some steps and roots to be on the lookout for, so my time was pretty slow but I enjoyed the run. And then I enjoyed a lovely iced coffee at my favorite coffee place from my grad school days that I miss so much. Great end to the running part of my vacation. Back home tomorrow and will have marathon group tomorrow night so that will keep me from the post-travel slacking off that is so easy to do. At least I know it's not hills this week!

@shanber @elise4270 @skippygirlsmom as always, the back yard is open for camping. Currently, there is NOT a river of lava running thru it! (tho if elise wins the lotto, one of the resorts is a better choice.)
@PastorVincent mutts are the best!
Back to work.
Oh but I wouldn’t be home. You see, I’d either be getting a tat, snorkelling with the turtles, or putting up my tent in @HonuNui’s backyard!!!
Get that ticket. Get two. Let’s get this MFP Hawaiian roadshow happening!!8
