July 2018 Running Challenge

It was a beautiful morning for running, except for the fact that I stayed in bed two hours later than I’d planned and had to twist my own arm to get myself out the door. Then of course the greenway and big lake were packed with people and I spent my first mile and change trying not to get grumpy about all the people passing me. I mean, who cares, FFS? That particular lake is a bit of a meat market - I may try and avoid it in the future, at least during peak times.
Anyhow, I split off from the lake after around mile three and ran around a nearby cemetery and down to the third of the chain of lakes. It was also packed, more families than hardbodies, but by this point I was feeling pretty badass and didn’t mind it as much. I’d been keeping to a pretty slow pace and only walking a bit on hills, but around mile four I realized that my long runs are probably getting a little too long to do on an empty stomach. The last couple of miles were a bit of a drag and involved more walking than I’d prefer, but I made it!
Week end summary: a very successful week! I hit PRs in everything I’m currently tracking - longest run, fastest mile, fastest 5K pace, fastest 2 mile pace, and most weekly miles ran. I ran my very first ever race and it was a lot of fun, even if I haven’t decided if racing is going to be a thing for me or not. I’m still getting back to normal after a packed June and having a holiday mid week didn’t do much for that, but other than my work hours being low and still being behind on household chores, things are honestly going pretty well.

Barry's Bay is at 45.4°N sunrise at 5:30 sunset at 9:00... so why can I not find the time to run?! We have another heat spell on our hands so I should really take advantage of the late sunset if I ever expect to make goal this month.4

I have now been on MFP for three years. My starting weight was 223 lbs. My original goal was to lose weight, until I hit normal BMI. I passed that by and just kept right on going till I found a range I was good with. My range is 125 lbs to 135 lbs. I started walking when I first started MFP. After about nine months, someone asked me if I was a runner. I adamantly stated 'no'. After that day I thought about what the lady had asked and thought, 'why not?' I started running in spurts, no plans, just repeat in my head, 'don't stop'. Now here, I am pushing goals I never thought I would ever achieve. I ran a marathon a few months ago, now I just want to run, no destination, no alarming goal, just get up, get out and run. I thank everyone here for all the help, I have learned so much in reading about everyone. Thank you so much for the inspirations, insights and the smiles that go with my miles.
And now YOU are the inspiration gor so many of US!13 -
Morning everyone! It's blowing a gale today and I still got up at 530 for my Monday 5k. Technology failed me again, strava wasn't tracking the first couple of km. Sigh. At least I have a week to sort it before my next long run but so annoying! I restarted it and it tracked my final 3 km so it does work...
It was a nice morning though. No rain, and I could see a lightning storm off the coast! It was beautiful! So 5km today, 32 for the month!7 -

Utica (NY) Boilermaker 15k race today. What a fun and crazy experience. This is by far the biggest race I've done, with over 11,000 finishing the 15k and another 4000 or so for the 5k. The day started way too early to drive an hour to the race and get there in plenty of time for parking, etc. We parked by the start and watched as the crowd grew. It took something like 15 minutes for us to get across the start after the gun went off. The weather was really good - we were so lucky the heat of the last week had broken. It was right around 61 degrees F when we started which was apparently either the coolest or second coolest Boilermaker race day ever.
Once we got moving, it was pretty wall to wall with people. My two friends and I weren't too concerned with time, but were concerned about not losing each other in the crowd, it was hard to navigate. Compared to other races I've done, this one was pretty thick with people the whole time, it never really thinned out that much. The crowd along the course was fantastic. There were so many bands, tons of water stops, most of which also had cups of ice, lots of signs and cheering. Several places had water hoses to run through. The water stops were tricky though with the crowd and the cups everywhere - you had to really watch your step.
Despite the relatively cool temp, I still felt like it was fairly hot during the race. I maintained a decent but not fast for me pace along with my friends. My one friend felt really exhausted by the last two miles so I spent a lot of time encouraging her to keep going. I was really happy for her that she was able to gut it out. Our other friend did great - it was her first race over 10k ever and she seemed to love it after being filled with dread about it for the last few weeks. My time was 1:43, which was about an 11:03 pace. Not great compared to the last few longer races, but I felt good about it and had a fun time.
The party after was something else. So incredibly crowded. There was a great band and free beer, which was definitely being consumed in quantities. I managed to see quite a few runners I knew, which surprised me in the sea of humanity. The food was disappointing, but a couple of beers in I stopped caring too much. We stayed for a while and then trekked back to the car for the drive home. I was so happy to finally get home and get some real food and take a shower.
Kind of disappointing that there wasn't a shirt or medal with this race, just a pin and a pint glass. But I guess the fun of the race and the party makes it worth it (plus the entry was fairly reasonable). I would definitely consider doing this again, but now I know I will probably never get so lucky with the weather again.14 -
@katharmonic Great job! And you survived the crowds!0

I ran 5.2 in my neighborhood. It was overcast and fairly cool, and I ran in the opposite direction I normally run to mix things up.
I mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters, so I took my Little on a hike today. We saw a turtle, and she was so excited because apparently she has never seen a turtle outside of a zoo. The place where we hiked also has an area where they house rehabilitated animals that can’t go back into the wild for whatever reason, so that was nice too.

18.02 miles today. It was supposed to be 16, but trail was closed and I had to change my route.
Also, I have a question for fellow runners....
Aid station food - An organization with which I am very active (not a running organization at all) is thinking about volunteering to staff an aid station at a local marathon / half marathon in Sept. as sort of a community involvement effort. I'm going to be running, so do not plan to help staff the station. However, I'm trying to help with planning and they are relying on me as the only runner in the group. The race is supplying water, sports drink, and cups. We would have to provide snacks and trash cans.
So the question is about what type of food to supply. My initial thoughts are that runners generally need sugar and salt and want something to grab quickly. It will likely be too hot for chocolate. So the first thought was Skittles in tubs held out so runners can grab a handful as they go by. For salt, the same idea with the smallest pretzels I can find or possibly potato chips or peanuts. I'm thinking the salty food may be best if potato chips for those who are gluten free and/or allergic to peanuts. Mind you, there is nothing here for carnivores like me, but I may be the only one on the course anyway. I know some may not want to stick their hand in the same tub as others, but I would rather avoid wrappers. This is a BQ qualifying race, so part of the goal is to ensure that runners spend as little or no time at the aid station. I figure it will help to put signs in advance so that runners know what is available and which side it is on... for example, sports drink with an arrow pointing right and water with an arrow pointing left so they know which side to move towards in order to get what drink they want. Similar idea for snacks.
Does anyone have advice for food and / or logistics for staffing the aid station?1 -
@midwesterner85 - Skittles are a good idea or gummy bears. Also pretzels or corn tortilla chips but I am not a huge potato chip fan. Also watermelon in small pieces. Any of these could be put in the same tiny cups as the water then you wouldn't have the hands in the bowl issue... sorry the thought of lots of sweaty hands in a bowl of food grosses me out.6
-
@midwesterner85 marshmallows. Although some may not like the stickiness
For me I can't trust anything that is gf unless I know the brand. I know snyders makes good gf pretzels but I'd leary to take them unless in original wrapper. But I also bring all my own stuff because I can't risk it and know what I need. Sorry, not much help.1 -
@midwesterner85 - I've had orange slices at the last couple of races and really appreciated it. With the peel on you can just quickly suck out the juice or eat the slice. I also saw in one race they had those little pill cups with jelly beans in them. That might be a way to get skittles or gummy bears or similar without having to dig in a big bowl. It's a bit more hassle and expense to set up I would imagine. Popsicles? I had one today during my race and it was great - like a freezy pop in a tube but smaller. I would probably take pretzels if they were on offer.0

July goal: 80 miles
7/1: 7.6 miles
7/3: 4.2 miles
7/5: 4.6 miles
7/6: 4.3 miles
7/8: 7.1 miles
27.8/80 miles
Today's run was good. I ran 7.1 miles. It was hot, but it's July in Texas. It is going to be hot for a while. It was still pretty nice at ~78°f so I won't complain. No dogs bit me this week on my long run so that was good. I did have a few run out at me and it scared me more than usual after getting bit last week. I don't know why people think it is ok to let little dogs like chihuahuas run loose. I was fully prepared to pepper spray one of them if I needed to, but thankfully I just outran them.

@AlphaHowls Wow ! You are such an inspiration!
@katharmonic Sounds like a good race! Glad you had fun with it.
@marisap2010 I'm so glad you were able to take your little on a hike. I can't imagine a kid who has never seen a turtle in the wild. Although I had to Google saskatoon berries after @juliet3455 mentioned them so I guess depending on where you live it may not be that unusual that a child has never seen a turtle.1 -
@midwesterner85 I like the potato chip idea. Could offer those in small paper cups and hand them out like water.
I like @RunsOnEspresso idea of marshmallows. Not my fav treat, but for running would be good. Maybe little ones with the tater chips? Both foods are cheap.
M&M's dont melt. I had some in my car (from the orthodontist) in the 95+ heat all afternoon and nada one melted. Chips, marshmallows and chocolate? I even like the idea of crushed potato chips!
And BACON. I ran the OKC Memorial Marathon (half distance), this race is also a BQ. Bacon, bananas and whiskey at one stop.
I ran with a group, they liked dates and raisins. (Yuck).
Pickle slices? Again inexpensive
ETA or green olives?1 -

I honestly was shocked when she told me. I guess she has always lived in fairly urban areas where there aren’t as many animals. That is one reason I wanted to take her hiking. I’m trying to introduce her to things that are not electronics!

@midwesterner85 What about gummy bears or jelly beans in little pill cups?1

My favorite aid station food is grilled cheese.... I also like mashed potato balls2

@5BeautifulDays LOL That's a very well-written description of a millisecond of clever reaction time.
Hope the bruises don't hurt too much.
I'm definitely sore today and decided to wait until tomorrow to get out and run. I banged up my left side, and my husband recently broke his right arm falling off his bike, so we're quite the gimpy pair, lol!
Your race sounds like fun, @katharmonic ! I can't imagine drinking beer after running...I'd be running somewhere, but it wouldn't be to party! But bands and lots of friends sounds like a way to make the miles fly by.

Good call on the m&ms! The hot chocolate race does marshmallows and chocolate. One year they did m&ms. They were good. The chocolate squares sound unappetizing while running so I shoved them in my vest for later. They were wrapped LOL
Bacon! Yes! I love bacon. Ohh, green olives would be tasty too I bet.1 -
@katharmonic Congrats on your race. Having fun is key0
-
@midwesterner85
What I have seen at the big races is:
Gummy Worms (and bears, etc)
Orange Slices (I love these, water and sugar in a yummy package)
Pestles - only much later in the race
Ice Pops
Vasoline on a stick
Sweedish Fish
Gels
I have not seen that has been suggested:
Skittles (my guess is the dye will get all over your hands, and they do not seem easy to hand out hygenitically)
M&Ms (same guess as Skittles)
They might work, maybe if you put a handful in a cup and handed them out?
That is all I got right now.0 -
@katharmonic Way to go! People keep telling me I should run the Boilermaker, and every year I fail to plan for it. You could have seen a bunch of people I know from Rochester, or you could have missed all of them in the crowds.
@midwesterner85 - Besides labeling what you're providing, the volunteeers should constantly be announcing what is provided. "Gatorade on the left, water on the right!" Or, "Water! Gatorade next table!" In the case of Skittles, volunteers should be constantly announcing that these are Skittles, because they look just like M&Ms.
It may sound dumb, but marathon runners temporarily lose at least 20 points of IQ while running the race. A sound track may sink in when signs don't and pre-race directions have been forgotten.5
