wait until 8pm or so when the sun starts to go down, it's not so bad then. At least the sun isn't beating down on you.2 -

I just did a little short move my legs before my 4 mile trail race tomorrow. I used to never run the day before a race, but a short little run seems to help me feel better on race day.

seriously how do you keep your feet under you? when i go fast, even 10mph edit: i mean 10:00min/mile, i feel like i'm going to trip over my feet. it feels like a lot of coordination i may not have.
also, do your legs get tired or your lungs first? it used to be my lungs but now my legs. my HR rarely goes above 170bpm

Great job @cburke8909 !!
Good luck tomorrow @MobyCarp
@HonuNui great picture
@sarahthes tell that Garmin not to be so negative ha ha Yesterday I came in from running in the morning with bugs all stuck to me. Skip was like gross, I said I think I have some in my teeth too ha ha
@girlinahat ha ha
If running didn't involve suffering everyone would be doing it. @LaDispute57 amen!
Taking Skip to the orthopedic dude on Monday, both her knees are really hurting her. She didn't run this morning and she hasn't missed a training run all summer. I think it's the new shoes she got about a month ago, she's been complaining on and off about her knees the past like 10 days. I told her while she's at work today to get something different. I'm not a Nike fan and that is what they are, so hopefully that is the issue.

The wrong shoes can kill you1

@skippygirlsmom Yes, it seems to take about that much time for the wrong shoes to cause over-use injuries to become noticeable.0

Headed out at 6:15am this morning and it wasn't bad. A bit overcast and 68 degrees. It definitely warmed up towards the end of my run when the clouds broke, but the shaded areas were pleasant. I ran the hilly section of Delaware Park twice, which means my total elevation gain was 172 ft! I know that's nothing for most of you, but for me it was intense! My legs felt pretty dead by the last mile and half.
Now it's time to pack up and head home super early tomorrow morning. I'm going to miss this cooler Buffalo weather! I'll be headed into a sauna of heat and humidity by tomorrow afternoon!

seriously how do you keep your feet under you? when i go fast, even 10mph, i feel like i'm going to trip over my feet. it feels like a lot of coordination i may not have.
also, do your legs get tired or your lungs first? it used to be my lungs but now my legs. my HR rarely goes above 170bpm
10mph? I can not run that fast. Who runs that fast? Im like 4 maybe 5mph. My cardiovascular system is currently the limiting factor in my speed/endurance. My HR frequently is over 170, especially if its hot.

10mph??? That is a 6 min mile. That is probably way to fast for you right now. Back that off. Start at like 4 mph and work your way up until you find where you are in your fitness and work from there.0 -
One advantage that I have discovered about being able to run in zero drop shoes is that it eliminates the guess work about buying shoes. It is nice because I can order everything online with no worries. I only need to decide if I want any cushioning or not. I can tolerate up to a 4mm drop in trail shoes, but anything more than that trashes my feet, knees, hips and back.0
-
Okay, that is a little better but it still might be to fast for you. Start slower and work your way up and find out where *you* are. Work from there. It does not matter how fast/slow anyone else is - you need to start where you are and work from there.2 -

My trail shoes are 0 drop. My street ones are 8mm. I need to find good zero drop street shoes I think2 -

I believe the speed comes from practicing quicker leg turnover. What is your cadence? I think a higher cadence feels more comfortable when it comes to speed. Then again, my legs are super short so I have to take a lot more steps to cover the same distance as a normal person

Nice morning to run for Louisiana summer weather. Temperature was 74 degrees F, Wind was calm, humidity was 95% and Dew point was 73. Humidity didn't feel like 95% .
Watched the sun come up as I ran. It was trash day, so last 5 or so minutes of my run stunk because they were picking up trash.
Seriously thinking about running two 5K's on the same day in August. My husband probably going to tell me no because I usually only get one race a month. We will see!
4 miler tomorrow morning, then bowling with my special needs brother.

Wow - I was just checking the course maps for the SF Marathon and HMs. One of the allures to running the HMs there is that you essentially run the same course as the marathon and in the 1st HM go out over the Golden Gate Bridge. But they had to change the course, last week! In the new 1st HM course runners no longer get to go across the bridge (full still does). Apparently the Bridge commission decided it was too dangerous for runners on the bridge road and they can't accommodate all of the runners on the sidewalk! I am running the 2nd HM this year, having run the 1st HM last year so the change doesn't affect me, but wow, I feel so bad for the runners signed up for the 1st HM because of the bridge, many who are coming from all over the world to run it!0

Race report
Cross country 5k at Ashley resevoir.
This is a weekly 5k organized by a small friendly running club that started in 1980. I showed up early to register for the run.(when its your first run you pay an extra $2 and get a number that you can use for future runs. My mom and dad decided to come out to the race and my youngest brother Pat decided to run. I had run 6 miles in the am and this is my first night run, so I did a half mile warm up. After I saw my parents and it was then I learned that Pat was also running. I know Pat is capable of a 23 minute 5k and I was hoping for 22 but now there's a little pressure. I keep waiting for Pats age and fitness to spark a surge in his performance. We line up together and "patiently" wait for the start.(race starts at 6:30 exactly on time but it's still hard to wait) I had lined up in about the 3rd to 4th row. I can see young high school and college runners in front of me and I know there are good runners in this race. I set my virtual pacer for 7 minute miles, with full knowledge that I can be slightly slower and still make the mark. The race starts.
Out of the gate, I reel like I and others were well positioned at the starting line. There isn't much passing happening, even when after the first stretch of downhill the course slopes up. We are covered completely in shade and the temperature feels good. My pacer indicated I'm ahead of pace but I'm with my brother and I'm not willing to slow as I don't think I'm that far ahead. We hit the first half mile and I don't check the time. At this point we come out of the covering and into the fully exposed causways that seprate the different parts of the resevoir. I'm still mostly side by side with my brother but I sense he is fading. It is hot. 🔥 My breathing is harder and I can tell I'm pushing but I'm keeping pace with the runners around me. We get to the end of mile 1 and I check time 6:40, too fast.
I back off the pace and for the next half mile I can tell I'm behind pace. After that half mile we are back into the woods and the lack of direct sunlight is appreciated by all. There is some uphill travel so that is slowing me some. I am catching up with one or two runners and my brother is behind me though I have no idea by how much. I get To the end of mile two and my pacer is indicating that I am behind pace. Turns out that mile 2 was a 7:22, it didn't feel that much slower but I need to find more speed for the last 1.1.
First half mile isn't bad. I've picked up the pace and my pacer is indicating that I'm sometimes on pace but continuing to fall behind here and there. The last stretch of woods and cover are about to end and the return of the heat and exposure will be back. It is only .6 miles, I can do it. I finish the 323rd mile with a 7:09. I see my boys and my wife. Their cheers are inspiring. The course official annouces that we are at 21 minutes and there is another 60 seconds to the finish. My watch had indicated about 30 earlier that I was about .25 miles away. I need to push. I get to the final stretch see the clock at 21:50 and sprint to the line. 22:00. I made my goal. Not bad for a no taper, not 5k trained run. My brother was a full minute behind.
I may have overdone a bit as my hamstring on my right leg was very tight this morning. It felt better after my easy run. Fortunately it seems like discomfort and not real pain. I'll consider a smaller distance long run for Saturday at a very easy pace and take my normal Sunday rest day.21 -

I can't imagine going for a 10 mile run starting at 9 at night...
I went for a 5 mile last night starting at 9:30. Probably finished in about the same time the speedier folks would have finished a 10 mile run.
It is rare I can physically wake up early enough to run in the morning. Yesterday I hit snooze from 5:15 to 6:50.4 -
Ran a little under a mile this morning as a warmup before lifting weights, and was reminded once again that a year ago, a mile would have been my entire workout. I ran about the same pace this morning as I was running a year ago, except that today that pace was me trying not to break a sweat and breathing through my nose most of the way. A year ago I’d have been exhausted and thrilled to run a mile without stopping at any pace. I need to work on being better at appreciating how far I’ve come instead of comparing myself to people further down the road.
A question I haven’t seen asked yet (although I’m sure it’s come up before): how much do laces matter? My kitten-monster has eaten most of the way through the laces on one of my running shoes, and while it held up this morning, I want to replace it before my next long run. Would any sturdy pair of laces work, or should I head to the running store this afternoon? ETA: If it matters, I'm running about 13 miles a week, longest run just under 6 miles, always on pavement.

@PastorVincent - check out Altra and TopoAthletic for 0 drop road shoes. My fav is Skora but they are hit and miss right now on stock. I hear they will have more in the fall but we shall see. They do tend to be a bit more cushioned than my Topos but neither really have much.
@MegaMooseEsq - I don't think laces matter. I do like the Nathan elastic laces someone here recommended a while back... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073PQ77DY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They have some give to them so they remain snug but accommodate if my foot swells.1 -

@LaDispute57 and @midwestener85 I completely agree with you both. She has ramped up her mileage during the same timeframe too. I’m really not a Nike fan for shoes, I’ve heard a lot of unfavorable things but she felt really good in them. I think she needs to go back to something similar to what she was wearing. I’m told her to talk to the manager about a zero drop or something close to that, she wears spikes for all her races so there is that. Also she will tend to heel strike so that should help that too. I'm doing lots of reading and told her to try some Hokas out. She has an appt on Monday with her orthopedic guy. He's the high school doctor so his nurse got her right in, they wanted her to come today but she's at work.
@mbaker566 ha ha I didn’t reply because I thought DAMN GIRL I can’t run that fast ha ha I seem to go back and forth between lungs and legs – lately I’d say legs more
@shanaber that is so wrong, I’d be pissed if I thought I was going over the bridge only to find out I wasn’t
Ha ha @cburke8909 that brotherly competition never ends. Great report I was on the edge of my seat. Take care of that hamstring now!

So yesterday I went out to dinner with a friend and afterwards we went for a walk (just a couple miles) and she says to me, "you're really limping...did you hurt yourself?" And I'm like, "I'm limping?" My friend is an OT and she starts saying things like physical therapy and piriformis and stretching and I'm scowling at her because I hadn't realized that the pain I feel in my hip is actually making me limp. As I was doing my cool-down walk after my run this morning (4 mile run, .5 mile walk) I realized that I'm sort of curling into the pain on the left side, like I'm hunching over a little. So I worked really hard on posture while I was walking...and I guess I'm going to have to talk to my doctor about a referral for an orthopedist or PT or something.
My hip's been hurting since before I started back to running, and running doesn't make it feel worse--but I suspect that if I want to keep running and run longer distances, I'm going to have to work on this.
