I have a Garmin Forerunner 25... I get 10 hours of GPS usage which is plenty to get me through my 50k races. And it was inexpensive... about $1254

My daughter’s swim club puts on a 5k fundraiser each year and I was a co-chair for the run, so it was a light week on running. I could have made it out there, but mentally just wasn’t there. Weather went back and forth for the two days leading up to the run and it was the first time doing it as a glow run. Weather held in until 10 min before the run and it started down pouring. Thankfully, it let up a little during the run and other than a couple sightings of heat lightening after it had started it was just the rain. I had missed the online signup for the Packer 5k that was held yesterday (our run was Friday night) and pick up and signup started at 3 pm. The plan was if things were going ok before all the craziness my husband and I would drive over quick and signup. I knew it would be tough, but there’s a wellness series they do and I wanted to try and go for the series.
Packer 5K Recap
Getting up was tough as didn’t sleep too well the night before. Just a lot of adrenaline left over after the end of cleanup and thoughts about things to change for next year. Got up anyway and put on a happy face and started getting ready. It was overcast skies and looked like rain.
We had lots of time as pulled in to park shortly after 7 am. Walked around to keep the muscles warm and to wake up . Lots of people dressed up in Packer gear for the festivities. We lined up about 15 min before in our wave. Picked a spot towards the back as my time was likely going to be towards the end of that wave. Crossed the start and didn’t see my husband until he was heading towards the finish line when he was coming out of the stadium.
I peeked at my watch during the first mile to see where my pace was. I felt good, but it was too fast so slowed down. I have to learn to not look at my watch as I should just go by feel and see what happens. I didn’t stop for the water stations so didn’t have to try and navigate through there, but plenty of volunteers so would have been fine and the wave we were in didn’t seem like it would be a problem. During the last mile they send you through the tunnel to do a lap on the very outside of the field through Lambeau Field. My husband was coming out of the stadium while I was going in. During the lap they put the people on the Jumbotrons, so it’s an experience for football fans.
I finished in 28:47 and my husband finished in 25:21, so we were both happy with those results.

19.06 miles this morning. Took more electrolyte / salt tablets than last week, but it still was too little too late. Really slowed down over the last several miles and my calves were very painful when I stopped. Even now, several hours and lots of additional salt later, I'm still getting some mile cramps. I have got to do something to make sure I get lots of tablets early on. That is my #1 downfall right now, so I am prioritizing it.

midwesterner85 wrote: »@marisap2010 Battery life is one of the main reasons I switched from Fitbit Surge to Garmin. On Fitbit, I never turned on GPS and still had much worse battery life.
I have the Garmin Fenix 3 HR and pair it to the Garmin HRM Run chest strap (for more accurate HR and other analytics). I was at 100% charge yesterday before I mowed the lawn (no GPS or chest strap, just steps and OHR). After my 19.06 miles this morning (3:07:56) with GPS and HRM Run, I still have 75%.
I have no experience with Apple or Suunto, but have heard good things about Suunto battery life also... especially if you set it to ping the GPS satellites less frequently.
Yes to Suunto having long battery life. I ran for over 5 hours one day, then logged things like swimming and hours-long walks over the next several days before I charged it. I've got it set to the highest-use battery settings for workouts.
It sounds like the Garmins are very popular and have excellent battery life as well.0 -
Uff, I'm feeling betrayed by the weather! It was supposed to be cold today, so I decided that for once I would get to sleep in on Sunday. Turns out the weather forecast was wrong, and it was 25°C (77°F) when I headed out for my long run, and it quickly got hotter from there. Too hot for my taste!
My training plan had 21km scheduled, but I took a break after 16.7km, then did another 5km half an hour later. Not the same as 21km at once, but will have to be close enough for today. And next weekend I'm setting my alarm clock again, no matter what the forecast promises!

July goal: 80 miles
7/1: 7.6 miles
7/3: 4.2 miles
7/5: 4.6 miles
7/6: 4.3 miles
7/8: 7.1 miles
7/10: 4.5 miles
7/11: 4.5 miles

7/19: 4 miles
7/22: 7.5 miles
69.6/80 miles
When I set out for my run this morning it seemed almost cool. It was ~77°F but we have been hitting over 108°F all week so it really did seem nice. There was a good amount of shade for most of the run too which was good. I ran 7.5 miles so I only have 10.4 to meet my goal. That shouldn't be a problem even with my family reunion coming up this weekend. I'd really like to just run out to the lake on Sunday morning, but I probably won't. It is only about 5 miles but I could stretch it to 7 or so if I take the back roads, but I don't know if I want to get out there that early and if I wait too late it will be too hot for me. I'm kind of bummed because neither of my kids can make it this year. My son and his girlfriend are coming the next weekend though so I am looking forward to that.
It looks like my break time is over. My husband makes and sells homegrown pickles and this heat has been pretty tough on us, but we have still had a pretty good crop this year so I guess I better get off my phone and go help with making the pickles.
Congrats to all who raced this weekend.

@Teresa502 race recap of my first Duathlon
The drive up
I was forced into listening to the end of an audio book on the 1.5 hour drive to OKC by Carl G. Jung. As if I'm not neurotic enough, and i already understand human behaviour, and need not further complex insight on the shortcomings of the human psyche. But I was slightly entertained when I shared some of these shortcomings and behaviours, enough to chuckle.
I only wish it had been in German. Hahaha! (Because I know about a 100 words in German, and the time could have been better spent training my ear.)
Packet pick up
Walk in bicycle shoppe and ask Eric (dh, oh he gets an upgrade from nameless dh here), "did you get your helmet?" See, I had just turned the water off in a shower when he said "I'm ready, I'll be in the truck". I literally was standing soaking wet, naked, in the shower. With this, i didn't have the thought to go through the "did dh remember " list. His answer, "oh *kitten*. i forgot my helmet". Bike store has helmets. These, unfortunately were for the wealthy elite cyclist at 289 USD. BikeOne (shameless plug. Love these guys) in OKC had them a bit less. And Eric claimed he didn't really like the helmet he owns. So yes definitely pick something you like. Bontager 120USD.
Checked into hotel. Eric's bank card had had been compromised the week before. So its had been canceled. It was also the one he use to book the room. Wish I had gone into check in with him. Apparently the employee at the front desk had to call to have it verified that payment was made and got into an argument with the lady on the other end who hung up on him. And i thought i was the only one with workplace drama.
Lunch-uneventful at panera bread. Drove the race course. Went to mass. I do have a blasphemous complaint about mass. Their jesus looked like a desperate house wife.
Met @seanevan10 and the family for Mexican food. We owe them dinner now. (We owe everyone dinner).
race morning
Up in plenty of time to make setting up the transition, and absent pre race meeting. Park away from the crowd for easy exit and I ask Eric "did you get your shoes?" The reply? Well it's all a string of kittens here. Back to the hotel.
The actual race.
Run 3k
Out and back nice long hills and the return is more down than up. Nice. i can do down. Average pace 10:22 correction 10:03. I had started my watch too early.
Bike 22.5k
I think it took me 2-3 minutes in transition. The first 3-4 miles I was rather aggressive. It was also the hilly part of the course. Figured each hill was probably the last... by miles 5-6 I caught a second wind and the course flattened out, i was able to rid a faster. Miles 8,9,10 I second guessed my existence and questioned the ability of my genetic make up to complete, participate, or survive such events without injury. Miles 11-14. I don't know. My *kitten* hurt, my knee hurt, my hip hurts. My brain had checked out over the stupidity it sensed in an unnecessary physical demand as this. Average speed 14.8mph, 4.07min/mile
Run 3k again.
The race was winning. I was beat. Ran walked the first bit let my legs uncramp and figure out how to walk once again. There was no pain. Bike muscles were spent, not running muscles. Average pace 11:22
I placed 2nd in my AG, have not checked to see if there were only 2 or 3 of us..yet. I think I'm sunburned. Ate panera again. They messed up my order. Instead of 1 steak arugula sandwich, I had 2. I did happily eat both of them. I had a nap an am hungry again. I think this was more effort than a half.
I had fun and had a cool number written on my arm and my calf. It was almost as cool as a tattoo.
ETA tldr- bold text silly. (And correct my malfunctioning fingers)
2nd in AG because everyone else in my AG was sleeping in on this fine Sunday morning.28 -
@Elise4270 Sounds like quite the trip! Congrats on getting 2nd in your AG!
Re: Carl Jung - At least you only had 1.5 hours of him. I had a whole semester about him in grad school.

Today's notes – The weather forecast called for rain today, with chance diminishing by afternoon. So the plan was go to church this morning, then run in light rain or showers this afternoon.
The weather failed to conform to the forecast. By the time I got out to run at 3:30, it was sunny and 81º F (27º C). The plan I'm not really following called for 90 minutes easy today, and I felt pretty durable; so I set off on a long loop with hills.
It was hot. Hotter than yesterday. About as hot as when I ran Shoreline, though I wasn't running as fast and there was more intermittent shade on my route today. But I was feeling the heat by 6 miles in. Took an S-Cap 43 minutes into the run. Drank the last of my Nuun about mile 9. The last 3 miles or so felt like late in a marathon, where I have to play mental games to keep going. When the watch ticked over 90 minutes, I slowed to a walk.
I'd made it over all the significant hills, but it was still a mile to home. I'd mis-remembered the length of the loop I was running. I liked the rural nature of the southern part of the loop, and I especially liked how little traffic there was on much of it; but walking that last mile home felt like an eternity. Came inside to strip out of wet running clothes, stretch, ice, and shower.
I likely had a mild case of heat exhaustion today, not as bad as the day I ran Shoreline. But I saw it happening in real time, and didn't do anything terribly stupid. Had a second S-Cap after I slowed to a walk. Drank water on the way home. Drained the last of my water when I got in the door, and started in on coffee. I'll be okay.
But dang, I'm beginning to dislike summer weather. It's almost like I can't run more than about an hour without it getting really uncomfortable.

@marisap2010 - Which Apple Watch do you have? I have the Series 3 (no cellular) and run the Strava app directly on the watch. It doesn't seem to impact the battery much at all. I also wear a HRM strap so I don't depend on the watch for the HR data. Otherwise I turn off the HR function because it will drain the battery.
@jele30 - I am a huge Packer fan and have been to a few games at Lambeau. I saw that race in an email from the Packers. Wish I could run it one of these days. It would be awesome to run through the stadium!
@Elise4270 - Great job on the duo and age group finish!! Loved the 'Desperate Housewives Jesus'!! How did @seanevan10 do?1 -

I also discovered today that my Apple Watch is not going to make it through my marathon. At the end of 18.75, I only had 5% battery left. That is what I get for being a slower runner, I guess. For those of you with Garmins, what is the battery life like? I really don’t want to spend money on a new watch right now, but I guess my only other option would be to have Runkeeper or another app running on my phone during the run.
Yep, the Apple Watches are not able to run anywhere near that long. My Garmin 935 covered my 7 hour run a few weeks to go with more than 1/2 to spare (I forget what it was at exactly).
Apple Watch 3 Offical stats:
Workout
Up to 10 hours indoor workout
Up to 5 hours outdoor workout with GPS
Up to 4 hours outdoor workout with GPS and LTE
Up to 3 hours outdoor workout with streaming audio, GPS, and LTE
(source: https://www.apple.com/watch/battery.html)
So finish your Marathon in less than five hours, or forget your watch
The Garmin Forerunner 235, one of the lower priced Garmins, is rated at 11 hours with GPS tracking. So you can probably see the world of difference there.1 -

Loved the recap @elise4270! I could just hear the swearing with the forgotten helmet and shoes. LOL to the desperate housewives Jesus. Excellent job pushing through and placing 2nd in your AG. No matter how many were there! You were rewarded with that extra steak arugula sandwich - which is one of my faves! Good for you!
@joannedrummond5 - fantastic time on your half marathon! Congratulations!
@jele30 - very nice job on your 5k! Great time. Cool to loop Lambeau Field and be on the Jumbotron!
Hope I didn't miss any racers, good job everyone.

Like @shanaber, I slept in this morning too and ended up running in hotter weather than expected. But I wasn't too mad about it. The sleeping in was so nice, and there was a bit of a thunderstorm early so I just rolled over and enjoyed going back to sleep. Then decided I should take the dog for a long hike in the cooler morning so planned to put off the run until evening. I finally made it to Fleet Feet though and got fitted for a new pair of shoes. I got the Brooks Transcend and immediately wanted to try them out, so did 4 miles along the canal. It was fairly hot, but at least new shoes and there was a bit of a breeze. Shoes seem promising so far. I debated hard with another pair so I hope that after a long run or two I feel like I made a good choice. I'm tempted to buy the other ones too and rotate, but the bank account wasn't feeling it today.8 -
@PastorVincent Yes, it is unfortunate that I bought the Apple Watch before I decided to run a marathon. I probably would have not purchased it had I anticipated running for that length of time. I am thinking my marathon will be around 5 hours, so no good for me.
I actually talked with my husband a few minutes ago about the 235, so I might purchase that soon and just try to sell my Apple Watch.
@shanaber I’m actually not a huge fan of Strava, so I wouldn’t want to use it. Looks like a new watch is in my future.2 -
No run today ... spent it wiring. Updating the old fashioned non-grounded outlets to the grounded with GFCI. Neck hurts from twisting around, but not much cardio...1

7/22 Unplanned rest today due to rain. Instead I did a new kettlebell workout that almost made me want to throw up by the end. It brought back memories of when I first started "running".
Appreciation to all for the watch info. I have to replace mine soon as I can barely get it to charge and I'm not part of any local groups to ask for advice5 -
@shanaber I don't want to steal @seanevan10 's thunder in case she wants to share her race report. She did get 1st in the athena group.
She does, btw, have the cutest 8 year old twin boys. Smart little guys!. Oh how I miss the innocent days.10 -
