July 2018 Running Challenge

so, I'm out for the month of August.
Having completely lacked motivation and with only a half-hearted attempt to run, and it being pretty hot for a change here, I've decided to have a month break of even attempting to run.
I figure rather than feel guilty daily for not running, I should just call it quits and accept it's not happening. I'm going to attempt 30 days of yoga in the mornings, but if that doesn't happen I'll just enjoy the extra sleep for a month. I won't be present in the August thread, not even lurking.
It gives me a chance to focus on some other gym/cycling/swimming related activities.
Happy running everyone and see you in September!!! (when I'll need to start retraining for a HM in November!!)16 -
@shanaber - loved your race report. Great pictures. It's so beautiful there with the mist/fog. Sounds like you guys made the most of your trip. Congrats to your daughter on an incredible PR, and glad you made it through the long wait for a porta potty. That's pretty terrible.
@girlinahat I hope you have a very good break in August.1 -
@shanaber Well done! And huge kudos to your daughter! 50 minutes off her PR! WOW!!0

Last run of July and it was a pretty good one, if a little painful. I’m aiming to run one 5k-ish distance per week starting off slow and working up to a faster pace than my pre-lifting runs or long run, ideally without needing to walk. From my reading I think this is probably some kind of tempo run? In any case, I managed a 10’12” pace, which is a 5K PR, and not one but TWO full sub-ten minute miles, boom! I did get a gnarly calf cramp when I was pulling away from the water fountain around mile one, but so it goes.
Also, this was my first run in my new Old Navy shorts! Generally speaking they worked out great: love the length, love the feel, and the pockets (two!) were actually big enough to hold a house key, spare buff, and plastic card-holder with my ID and $20, and I completely forgot they were there. One big downside: the plum color I got does NOT hide sweat at all. I noticed this about halfway through my run and shrugged it off, figuring we’re all girls here out on the trail (figuratively), but I was pretty self-conscious walking home through the fully-dressed, not-drenched-in-sweat Muggles on their way to work. I don’t think it’s enough of a downside to negate the upsides, but it’s a bit of a bummer.
ETA: It looks like Old Navy sells the same shorts in black, so I think I'm going to see if I can exchange the pair I didn't wear for a couple of pairs in black. Then I can save the plum for easier, ideally less sweaty runs.

This morning would have been a great day to run, low 70's and low humidity. But somehow I got in the middle of an ant hill this past weekend, and I have dozens of ant bites on the top, bottom, in between my toes and it actually hurts to walk. So I am taking the last day of July off. But happy with my consistency of running every other day in July, beating my distance goal with 116 miles (36 miles over goal, matching my PR for monthly miles). Will take this extra rest day, and look forward to tomorrow (August already?!!). Tomorrow morning it is supposed to be even cooler than today with temps below 70F! I can't remember last time it did that. But I know it won't last long, so want to take advantage of that.
See you all in the August Challenge!
i accidentally stood on a red ant hill. they swarmed me. i stripped off my pants in the middle of the yard (mowing my lawn) and was swatting at my leg, mumbling curses. i'm sure the neighbors thought i was crazy.
@girlinahat one trail marathan hands out handy wipes in the registration bag. a friend who like me does shorter distances asked what those were for. well...
@shanaber great report
congrats on everyone who made their goals. good work for all who tried but missed.3 -
@girlinahat we'll see you in September ma'am, enjoy August.
ETA: Is the August challenge up yet and I just am not seeing it or did I miss a link in thread?0 -
*kitten*. I need more coffee. I was all over the August group then realized (like 3 pages in) that it was 2017. Oi with the poodles already. Sorry to anyone I quoted thinking it was this years thread.8
-
@girlinahat have a good, restful August. We will see you back here in September with a new mojo and ready to tackle that HM training.
@workaholic_nurse the August Running Challenge hasn't been born yet. Hopefully soon....1 -
@AprilRN10 "running til you aren't mad anymore!" I love it. And can't tell you how many people's lives may have been saved by me doing the exact same thing, lol
@shanaber What a great race report--the pictures are awesome! Sorry about the lack of facilities--that's just crazy. Congrats to your daughter on her wild new PR!
I finished up July with another 3 miles on the neighborhood trails. I didn't quite hit 60, but I'm sure I *ran* at least 45-50 miles of it, so I'm content. I'm hoping for a similar August, although I go back to work (preschool teacher) on the 24th, so I'm going to need to work out how I'll be getting my runs in once my schedule changes. I do think I have a plan...run short distances around the neighborhood on Tuesdays and Thursdays (when I don't go in until 9:30) and either run in the evening or on a treadmill in the afternoon on Mondays/Wednesdays, and Fridays until it cools down enough to do afternoon trail runs. Long run on the weekend.

Skip's private coach, who devastated us the other day by telling us she was moving out to the West coast, told me to stop playing around and run FAST to get my speed back up. So this morning I did a FAST as I can 1.5 miles at 11:27 pace. She's right I'm killing myself, I was a 10 min pace HM runner, what am I doing! So I'll throw some of those days in starting in August. We have so many come one come all speed work nights around here I need to start going to those.
Off to read some the posts.15 -

Wrapped up the month with this morning's run. Should have gone out earlier, but I walked the dog first and then figured while I was already mildly sweaty, why not just do it instead of waiting until this evening. My pace started out really slow and got progressively better, mostly because I just wanted to get it done with.
Really happy with how this month of training went in general. This was my highest mileage month so far, and I exceeded my goal. I have upped my base runs from a minimum of 3 miles to more consistently 4 miles. I got in my longest run ever (14.2 miles) as a bit of a fluke, but will shortly need to be back up there and beyond. My new shoes seem to have all but eliminated my ankle soreness, although there is still the blister issue to resolve.
I'll need to do some calculations to set a goal for August. Things are going to start getting very real!

I haven't seen Stan (@Stoshew71) here for a while and know he has been busy taking care of some personal business so I went a head and created the August discussion - hopefully I did it correctly and in the right place.

Had PLANNED to run yesterday. Fobbed it off in the morning, brought my stuff to run after work. Massive storms, so 3rd plan was the dread-mill. End of work, schlepped all my stuff back home without running. This morning, 0420am alarm went off, knowing I still had 2.57 miles left on my goal for the month, and had another internal battle of wits with myself which I either won or lost, depending on how you look at it.
FINALLY dragged my sorry self out of bed, dressed & got out, 30 mins later that I like. Took a different route, and realized about 1/2 way though that it was the longer route, and I was going to be cutting close on time, good thing all my food was prepped for the work day!
But, at least I was able to make the monthly goal, as nominal as it was.

Cut my run short today at 6 miles instead of the 9 I had planned. I mentioned a few posts back that the top of my foot has been bothering me a bit for the last ~1.5 weeks. It hasn't been hurting when I walk or run on it, just feels tight for the first 2-3 miles of a run. Pretty much the rest of the time though I have a persistent ache/burning sensation in the top of my foot. It's also a little tender if I press along th 3rd metatarsal. I spent last week treating it with ice/NSAIDs while still continuing to train, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. But also isn't getting worse. I guess I don't really know what to do, if it is better to take a week off to see if it heals up, or just continue with my training since it doesn't really bother me to run on it. Anyways, if anyone has dealt with something similar or has some advice, I posted about it in the group here

@shanaber Congrats to you and your daughter on a great race!
And congrats to everyone that ran, regardless of whether goals were achieved or not.
@ariceroni While your foot may not be getting any worse, taking pain killers may be masking things, and is a good way to make any injury worse. Get it seen to and let an expert tell you what your best course of action should be. I talk from experience - I did the same thing and wound up with a stress fracture that put me out of action for a couple of months.

@ariceroni I have a similar foot niggle. I only notice it in the AM or if dh squeezes my foot. My doc thought it was a Morton's neuroma. MRI and no neuroma. I think i have a bit of chronic tendonitis there. It hurts/feels good to rub.
Good luck with it, i second @garygse 's advice.1 -
@rheddmobile super PR
Ha ha @PastorVincent that signup button calls all our names. I signed up the final race in our trail series. Honestly he’s trying to kill me this race director
@juliet3455 sorry your run was non run, I have to admit the thought of you sliding in the mud did give me a chuckle
@AprilRN10 sorry for the clinical mess, hope it all works out for you. Great month of running!
@shanaber I can’t believe there were NO porta potty earlier in the race. So proud your girl’s PR, that is just simply amazing!!! Love the pictures of the two of you. Thanks for setting up August
@girlinahat some time off never hurts when you are losing motivation. Come back if you change your mind. You’ll be missed
Oh @mbaker566 I can feel your pain, I’m so sorry about the ants, it is HORRIBLE. Hope they didn’t get you too bad.
@ariceroni I agree with @garygse

GUESS WHAT? CHICKEN BUTT! Err, no that is not what I mean to say... what I meant was...
I finally got a run in! I snuck out of work at lunch and slipped in 7 miles at 8:57 pace. Short run for me, but still greater than 0.23 -

I had a pretty good run this morning. It was a lot cooler at 73F, but it was 95% humidity and the dew point was around 70 so as the run went on it started feeling more difficult. It was nice to be in the low 70s though and tomorrow should be nice too. It's only 89F right now which is really nice for August in Texas. Today has been my busy day at work, so I haven't had a chance to catch up on the thread but I wanted to go ahead and post my last run for July. I'm surprised that I was 10 miles over my goal. It was a great run yesterday. Overcast sky with temperature in the 70's. I had a hard time getting started because the sudden drop in temperature affected my mood. However, I was glad that I ran because mood was so much better afterward.
Met goal for the month! Congratulations to all who have met their goals this month.
Will try to catch up with reading posts on my lunch break. I am working the next 3 nights.
Total...55.75 miles
Goal....50 miles
