Apparently I've underestimated the popularity of the Great Wall in international communities. For us it's just an average weekend excursion.
@_nikkiwolf_ Sorry about the smog you ran into. I was lucky for the clear skies on that day (although I felt like a roasted pig). Air quality's still a bit hit and miss in Beijing at the moment, but more hit than miss it seems since everyone became so concerned about it. I'm pretty sure we haven't seen smog that bad since maybe two winters past.
If anybody in this group is ever in Beijing give me a PM! Morning runs around the Forbidden City, anyone?14 -
_nikkiwolf_ wrote: »@Orphia That's a great serious of time improvements on your park run times! Next week will be fast 4km?
Yes, good pickup!
At least, if all goes to plan, I'll do a fast 4 km as the next in the series, and hopefully under 28 minutes.skippygirlsmom wrote: »@Orphia stupid dogs. It looks like the pit bull that attacked me, Skip and Macy that lives up the road is gone. They moved out on Friday. The dog was still there Saturday but I went by today and pulled in the driveway and he didn’t come to the fence losing his freaking mind so I guess they came back for him. Yeah!
@skippygirlsmom Haha, that's great! Yes, I'm relieved about 2 scary Alsatians that may have departed somehow.
A policeman friend say's he's going to see what can be done about the Labrador/Retriever that chased. barked, and growled at me. He says he knows where it's from.@Orphia – Great progress! Will be 27:?? next week? Coincidentally, I also got chased by a big barking dog yesterday. He trotted along behind me but thankfully dropped off at the end of his yard.
@Teresa502 Glad yours was behind a fence! Oh, wow, your Pegasus are gorgeous!! I just got more of the 34s since I loved my first pair so much.
@RunsOnEspresso Welcome back!1 -
I missed my 6 mile run yesterday. What I thought would be a couple of hours to go on and do rounds turned into 9 hours of work for me. I’m going to try to squeeze in something tonight.3

Race report that isn’t on Dorset Invader HM.
So Sunday was the Dorset Invader Half Marathon with the same running group that organise the Giant’s Head Marathon I did last month. There is a general feel of nuttiness with these races, which are usually a whole weekend of events – 10k’s in the dark, then marathons, then half marathons then silly races for the kids. Some people find themselves signing up to do all of the events over a weekend. I’m not quite that mad.
Having had six weeks of heatwave and struggling to train through both lack of motivation and general it’s too hot, this weekend promised to be wet, cold and windy. It’s how it works – heatwave, then it starts to rain as soon as school’s break up for summer holidays.
I drove down to the campsite (field formerly occupied by sheep) Saturday afternoon and pitched my tent. Sat in the bar (barn formerly occupied by hay) with some people I’d met on previous races, had a drink and some food, then made my way back across the field, where the wind already had left casualties of broken tent poles and canvas, and many people had retreated to sleeping in their cars. I woke at 4am, and lay listening to the rain, and watching the 45mph gusts lifting my tent every few seconds, with the odd drip coming through the seams and me wondering whether I’d ever be back in Kansas again.
Race briefing was at 8.50 for a 9am start. At 7.30am I got up, ate my breakfast, packed my tent hurriedly into a plastic bag and drove home, where I spent the rest of the day lounging on the sofa with a book and an episode of Columbo.
The end.

Good call @girlinahat. Those sound like horrible race conditions.

Yesterday wasn't great. I failed to plan my eating accordingly and could not complete my run. It was supposed to be 3 miles, and I managed one.
Today is a scheduled 5, so we'll see!
This week is a monster schedule-wise. I maintain a night-shift schedule even on my nights off so that I can do my homework when my family is in bed. This week I am off until Friday, but my schedule will be jacked. My daughter has an appointment in the middle of the day today. I have orientation at my new job tomorrow from 9a-3p. Wednesday is school registration for my daughter (10th grade). Followed by clothing and supply shopping. Thursday is my birthday, so of course there are plans. PLUS this is midterm week and I have to take my midterm on my birthday because I work Fri, Sat, Sun and it has to be done by Sun. I'm supposed to make treats Thursday to share at a work event Fri. And run 5 miles today, 4 miles tomorrow, 3 Wed, 6 on my bday, and 3 on Fri. Oh my goodness! I may need some help holding it all together!

@noblsheep For me, the Great Wall is almost literally the other side of the world:
If I was ever out your way, I would make it a point to go see it as it would likely be a once in lifetime event.
Meanwhile, I live less than an hour form the Great Lakes, not far from Nigra Falls... and have not been to either. Proximity breeds complacency I guess.

7/29 left hip and knee were killing me all day so I decided to skip running and did an extra hip opening yoga session. It helped a bit. It is forecasted for Tstorms again today, but I'm hopefully to get out tonight after work. Have a good Monday. If that's possible cause they're just wrong.

So it is July 30th and I am at 103 miles. If I am to reach my normal month I only have to run around 95-105 miles between today and tomorrow. Should be easy... if I can just get a time machine to create enough hours in the day to pull that off with out missing work/etc!14

oh, moraines, i hate you. i've been spoiled with flat runs. not changing more than 75 ft. 150ft if i try to find hills. for this i had 240 some ft of change. some of the trail was sand, some of it was lose gravel. i was very proud i didn't eat it even though there were a few close calls. i think i will use the moraine trails to improve. it is definitely a hard run. my pace was 2-3 min slower than normal. Old girl is good at helping me find the best route thru the trail. the first mile the humidity was getting to me, the next few the dew point was. around 4 i wanted to quit, 5 felt good, and at 5.1 Speed demon sat down and wouldn't move till we headed back to the car.
then, they got to go for a swim.
i like this trail over the other nearby one because the lake is so close. it helps the dogs cool down faster and speed demon likes it. old girl not so much. Speed demon doesn't like being splashed though
i thought this was interesting

@MegaMooseEsq - "I have now run in three states, so that’s fun. Maybe I should get a map or something and start keeping formal track. Maybe it doesn’t matter." Why not? I have a map with push pins showing every run. It's fun, it's motivational. I don't necessarily have a goal of running in all 50 states - but it is fun to see all the places I've gone.
@girlinahat - sorry the race didn't go off quite as planned - but I love your report - a day on the couch with a book and Columbo isn't all bad.
It is certainly possible I could still meet my goal - however, those last couple miles would have to happen tomorrow after work instead of before and that's not likely. I ran 5 this morning - 5 "slow as molasses" miles, thanks to too much birthday cupcakes, birthday cake, birthday junk food, and birthday wine. I hit the big six-oh on Friday and celebrated.

Life came at me and kicked my behind for the past few days--not feeling well and then a big social weekend. I haven't run since Wednesday! It looks like it may be another rainy week here, so I took advantage of the relatively nice day (70 degrees, overcast, and muggy as heck) to run at the lake. I did 5 miles, but it was super slow. My hip is killing me. My doctor thinks it might be bursitis. The good news about that is that I could do a cortisone injection, but that sounds a little scary, honestly.
I'm sorry I haven't been able to follow--I hope everyone had a beautiful weekend and ran some good races! It doesn't look like I'm going to make my 60 miles goal, but I raised it so I could include my walking, and then didn't really use the walking miles as much as I thought I would. I'm pretty sure I did the full 40 miles of running I wanted to do, anyway. Maybe next month I'll split the difference and just make 50 my goal, lol.

@Teresa502 thank you – Race director wants her to work the Aid Station since he thinks some people will take 2 hours or more to do the 5 miles. He doesn’t want her out on the course that long moving with the tendinitis. She’s cool with the AS, she’s actually going to take my water bottle with her and give it to me at the station. I told her last time I wanted a sip of water after the uphill but the station was before it. Pretty new shoes.
@ContraryMaryMary that is great
@MobyCarp nice new sock! I brought 2 pair of SwiftWick and a pair of Balega yesterday at FF, suddenly my Under Amour are giving me blisters. Same spot every time, they don’t hurt and usually gone the next day, but for the first time when I’m running I can feel my feet are damp. With Skip’s discount and our good customer reward they were $4.00 for all 3 pair.
Ha ha on the live armadillo @Scott6255 I didn’t know there was such a thing, I thought there was only those lazy ones that laid in road
@MegaMooseEsq I never thought to track the states of run in. Cool idea. I have run in 6 states. One of my neighbors has run marathons in all 50 states. He makes my head spin
@Orphia I hope they do something about the dog, I don’t understand people who let their dogs do that.
@girlinahat I love how you camp out at races. I would have to force myself out of my tent if I was listening to rain and 45 mph winds….no scratch that someone would have to force me out of my tent. I would have packed up my tent and gone home too
@mbaker566 ha ha at Speed Demon, when they are done they are done
Spent the morning booking hotels so I can go to Skip’s cross country meets!

Do you only do races, or any runs? Do you pin the city, or just the state?

@PastorVincent @biketheworld @MegaMooseEsq etc
i've seen a few times people with a map on the back of their shirt and they x or color in the state. some are nonspecific but i met an adorable couple in WA who were doing half marathons in each state. they did one in Fort Atkinson in WI so we bonded over the awesomeness of the state2 -

I like the shirt idea! I'm still quite a few miles away from half marathon distance, but I suspect it might be a good distance for me. A half in every state sounds like a fun goal!0 -
@MegaMooseEsq i can't say it's an achievable goal for ALL people but i think it is for many and the training doesn't take all day for the turtle team. i could go do my long run in the morning and still meet people for brunch.

Less than four miles away from my goal! I had my first 20-miler yesterday and was very pleased with how it went. Average pace was 9:24, same average pace as my 2nd (final) 20 miler while training for chicago last year, but my average HR was much lower than last year and I took significantly fewer stops. I also had enough energy left in me to walk a mile to the farmer's market afterwards, and then walk the mile back home carrying a huge watermelon! Another big win is that I hit 50 miles this week, which is tied for highest mileage week I've ever ran. I was able to actually have a life this time around though, instead of being completely exhausted all the time like I was when I hit 50 two years ago All in all, I think training is going really well, and I am cautiously optimistic that I could maybe be in BQ shape by the time October rolls around!
Upcoming Races
10/07: Chicago Marathon
11/04: Hot Chocolate 5K
11/25: Space Coast Half Marathon

Got 6 on the boat yesterday... 146.50 for the month... Hope I can find 3.5 by tomorrow... but all these mojitos are conspiring against me15

Sign me up for the turtle team!
@5BeautifulDays 5 miles is 5 miles ma'am, fast slow or otherwise.
@marisap2010 Work multiplying, hate it when that happens!
@mbaker566 Speed demon and the old girl look great. Too funny on her refusing to move until otw back to the vehicle
2.46 miles of intervals this morning for 47.10 on endomondo and 6.2 treadmill totals of 53.3/50 miles for the month.3 -
The 45K distance at my trail race set a new course record by a full 25 minutes. 3:25 and change.
If I can ever get back into weight loss mode long enough to be close to a healthy BMI I want to do that race. Up the mountain then down the mountain... The winner was just flying when he passed us with a mile to go. Looked like he had a blast.7 -
@ariceroni that 20 miler was awesome! And a 50 mile week is tremendous! You really sound like you will be ready to CRUSH the Chicago marathon in October and get your BQ!!!
@LaDispute57 you are on vacation. Let the mojitos win!!2 -
Afternoon 10+k with another friend. 10k is her longest run, but she's been making that her regular long run lately. It was hotter than we're used to with our typical morning running, and there are more hills on my side of the city, so I think I went too fast and hope she'll still run with me again We went through the woods, past the secret military base, out some back roads, the factory that always smells like chicken bullion, a cemetery of foreign soldiers from WWI, and through a field - some of my favorite places to run. Weirdest thing I saw was a bunch of pickles laying by the trail in the woods. I have no explanation for this, but am sure there is a reasonable one out there.
Upcoming races:
August 18 Chmielakowy Half Marathon (Krasnystaw)
August 26 Kolbudy 10k, Bąkowo (Kashubia)11 -

There is a 50 states marathon club and I'm pretty sure there is a 50 states half marathon club too. I'm thinking about joining the 50 states marathon club at some point since distances beyond marathon still count. So a 50K, for example, still counts as a marathon as long as the other rules are followed (it has to have 10 finishers, has to be published, etc.).3 -

@PastorVincent We just need @AlphaHowls and @JessicaMcB to run some virtual miles for us.
I need 52km so 2 - 26km.2 -

Someone must have drank the juice and left the pickles!
