I have a Garmin Forerunner 25... I get 10 hours of GPS usage which is plenty to get me through my 50k races. And it was inexpensive... about $125

My daughter’s swim club puts on a 5k fundraiser each year and I was a co-chair for the run, so it was a light week on running. I could have made it out there, but mentally just wasn’t there. Weather went back and forth for the two days leading up to the run and it was the first time doing it as a glow run. Weather held in until 10 min before the run and it started down pouring. Thankfully, it let up a little during the run and other than a couple sightings of heat lightening after it had started it was just the rain. I had missed the online signup for the Packer 5k that was held yesterday (our run was Friday night) and pick up and signup started at 3 pm. The plan was if things were going ok before all the craziness my husband and I would drive over quick and signup. I knew it would be tough, but there’s a wellness series they do and I wanted to try and go for the series.

    Packer 5K Recap
Getting up was tough as didn’t sleep too well the night before. Just a lot of adrenaline left over after the end of cleanup and thoughts about things to change for next year. Got up anyway and put on a happy face and started getting ready. It was overcast skies and looked like rain.

We had lots of time as pulled in to park shortly after 7 am. Walked around to keep the muscles warm and to wake up :). Lots of people dressed up in Packer gear for the festivities. We lined up about 15 min before in our wave. Picked a spot towards the back as my time was likely going to be towards the end of that wave. Crossed the start and didn’t see my husband until he was heading towards the finish line when he was coming out of the stadium.

I peeked at my watch during the first mile to see where my pace was. I felt good, but it was too fast so slowed down. I have to learn to not look at my watch as I should just go by feel and see what happens. I didn’t stop for the water stations so didn’t have to try and navigate through there, but plenty of volunteers so would have been fine and the wave we were in didn’t seem like it would be a problem. During the last mile they send you through the tunnel to do a lap on the very outside of the field through Lambeau Field. My husband was coming out of the stadium while I was going in. During the lap they put the people on the Jumbotrons, so it’s an experience for football fans.

I finished in 28:47 and my husband finished in 25:21, so we were both happy with those results.

    7/9 - 3 miles
    7/10 - 1.35 mile walk
    7/11 - 3 miles
    7/12 - 2 mile walk
    7/13 - rest
    7/14 - 3 miles
    7/15 - 2 mile walk
    7/16 - 3 miles
    7/21 - Packers 5K

Total 15 miles run, 2 of at least 3 runs this week

Love the Packers!! Love Aaron Rodgers!!

@marisap2010 Battery life is one of the main reasons I switched from Fitbit Surge to Garmin. On Fitbit, I never turned on GPS and still had much worse battery life.

I have the Garmin Fenix 3 HR and pair it to the Garmin HRM Run chest strap (for more accurate HR and other analytics). I was at 100% charge yesterday before I mowed the lawn (no GPS or chest strap, just steps and OHR). After my 19.06 miles this morning (3:07:56) with GPS and HRM Run, I still have 75%.

I have no experience with Apple or Suunto, but have heard good things about Suunto battery life also... especially if you set it to ping the GPS satellites less frequently.

Yes to Suunto having long battery life. I ran for over 5 hours one day, then logged things like swimming and hours-long walks over the next several days before I charged it. I've got it set to the highest-use battery settings for workouts.

It sounds like the Garmins are very popular and have excellent battery life as well.

@Elise4270 Sounds like quite the trip! Congrats on getting 2nd in your AG!

Re: Carl Jung - At least you only had 1.5 hours of him. I had a whole semester about him in grad school.

Also, I cracked up about Desperate Housewife Jesus.

@marisap2010 - Which Apple Watch do you have? I have the Series 3 (no cellular) and run the Strava app directly on the watch. It doesn't seem to impact the battery much at all. I also wear a HRM strap so I don't depend on the watch for the HR data. Otherwise I turn off the HR function because it will drain the battery.
@jele30 - I am a huge Packer fan and have been to a few games at Lambeau. I saw that race in an email from the Packers. Wish I could run it one of these days. It would be awesome to run through the stadium!
@Elise4270 - Great job on the duo and age group finish!! Loved the 'Desperate Housewives Jesus'!! How did @seanevan10 do?

I also discovered today that my Apple Watch is not going to make it through my marathon. At the end of 18.75, I only had 5% battery left. That is what I get for being a slower runner, I guess. For those of you with Garmins, what is the battery life like? I really don’t want to spend money on a new watch right now, but I guess my only other option would be to have Runkeeper or another app running on my phone during the run.

Yep, the Apple Watches are not able to run anywhere near that long. My Garmin 935 covered my 7 hour run a few weeks to go with more than 1/2 to spare (I forget what it was at exactly).

    Apple Watch 3 Offical stats:

    Workout
Up to 10 hours indoor workout
Up to 5 hours outdoor workout with GPS
Up to 4 hours outdoor workout with GPS and LTE
Up to 3 hours outdoor workout with streaming audio, GPS, and LTE
    (source: https://www.apple.com/watch/battery.html)

So finish your Marathon in less than five hours, or forget your watch :)

The Garmin Forerunner 235, one of the lower priced Garmins, is rated at 11 hours with GPS tracking. So you can probably see the world of difference there. :)
