I seriously need more strength in my legs. I really thought I'm ok in that regards but my legs are jelly.

Check out Eric Orton's book "The Cool Impossible". http://www.runningwitheric.com/page/the-cool-impossible A great book with tons of great information on strength routines (using only a slant board and a fit-ball) and running technique. The slant board and fit ball routines are amazing and when I do them regularly, I see almost immediate results in my running, leg strength, stability, and injury prevention. In the book, "Born To Run", Orton was the coach that got McDougal ready for his first ultra. In my humble, non-techie opinion, "The Cool Impossible" should be in every runner's library (along with "Relentless Forward Progress"). It is a very fun, simple book to read and I guarantee you will be a stronger, better runner in just a few weeks.

What does everyone else feed their tired legs? Bbq? Roast? Acorn squash? Slow cooked beans? Coconut water? A foam roller?

I feed my legs whatever they want. They don't really like meat that much, but holy shlt, do they love alcohol.

Well.... I'll eat your meat, you drink my alcohol 😂

My brain says pizza is good recovery food, but the smart part of my brain, that's tiny, says "no pizza, bad habit". So guess i need to plan some meals.

Since I have gluten issues, pizza is not much of a thing anymore, at least nowhere near as much as I would like... but ice cream is very high on the list :)

DH bought airline tickets to Hawaii January 4th and return the 11th. Looks like we're doing this.

Anyone else interested in the Hawaii ultra relay?

My wife would say yes in a heart beat, but my bank account would say no even faster... :(

Haha! Figured you'd get a chuckle outta that. Send me your wagu, kobe and grass feed beef and I'll send the equivalent value in scotch 😁

If there's anything Dennis taught us, it's that you can't put off a marathon (ultra) in another state. What's 5K in the grand scheme of things?

Cmon. This race has 4000ft elevation gain. That's right up your alley. Spoil the misses. Go to Hawaii.

For me, that 5K is a small part of son's current college tuition :s

If you belong to Costco, check their travel deals. They usually have good deals. We've used them for all our Hawaii trips for airfare, car, and hotel. Prices can be low or high depending on your choices. We priced out the same trips on Expedia/Orbitz and its more than double.

    1) very small
    2) i told my kids to work or take loans and I'd help them. So "lucky" me, none of the three made college a priority.

@elise4270 - I am working on my DH so far no go... but I haven't given up. Also @HonuNui is this run up to the volcano that is erupting? That could be really scary!

The flowing lava (which is no longer flowing as of 2 weeks ago) is 40 miles away in lower Puna district. The run starts at oceanfront in Hilo town and follows highway 11 up 4000ft elevation to the town of Volcano (which has NOT been erupting...but where the glowing lake of lava could be seen at the summit in Volcano National Park for the last ~40 years, until it all leaked out at the bottom of the mountain and into the ocean in Puna!)

Took my rest day yesterday so plan was to make up my tempo run today. I got out late because of technical issues with the phone, car , headphones, etc... just one of those mornings. I had limited time to run and it was already hot when I headed out so I left Hobbes the Vizlsa at home. Starting out I had already made up my mind it wasn't going to be a tempo run but when I hit the paved trail and got going I surprised myself. It wasn't as fast as I normally would have pushed for but it was faster than I expected and felt ok other than being really really hot. Splits after my 1st warmup mile were 11:46, 11:19, 10:30, 11:19 and then a quarter mile cool down.
Saw these pretty flowers on our neighbor's cactus and had to stop to take a picture.

I have ~2 acres, some sort of shaded, a shower house with laundry and portapotty, bbq and frig on the lanai. Eggs for the picking out of the nest boxes. A tent should cost ~$50 at walmart. Please let me know if you're interested in this so I can warn DH plan accordingly...
Oh, and, January is NOT hurricane season.....unlike right now

We're probably interested. Thought perhaps splitting it up, camp/hotel as not to wear out our welcome 😉

@RunsOnEspresso Turns out dh held off on the tix to price check. We'll check out the Costco thing. Thanks!
