So, let's say a man is just starting a conversation with a woman via text and he suddenly starts dropping smiley faces and "lol"s. .
How does this affect her impression of him?

Oh yikes, I never even took this into consideration before. What's the implication, that I have the communication skills of a teenage girl? As if!9

If he does it right away, I think he is being fake and working up to something that's not going to happen. If it's after a few months of talking then I think he is comfortable and actually likes talking to me.1

"lol" is over-used anymore, especially for passive-aggressive statements. People make use it to cover rude statements, innuendo, and all kinds of things, like they are laughing the comment off, but really they are being an azzhat, trying to test the waters sexually, or hiding the fact they are butthurt/mad/sad/etc.

Once upon a time, I was skyping with a gal and my mic was broken so I was typing my side of the conversation. She said something funny and I typed "LOL" because in my head I was laughing. Really.
I then heard, "You're not even laughing a little bit. I AM LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU!"
I tend to text like I type here...lousy with typos. But I agree with @ChaelAZ and @RunHardBeStrong.3 -
Okay, but here's part 2 of the question: If you're. . say. . over 40. .does that change everything?. .0

Everything over 40 automatically becomes creepy.

Sorry...
lol!4 -
I don't think men over the age of 40 should be carrying on texting conversations. They should limit texting to: "I'm running late I'll be there in a few" or "Remind me again what you wanted at Burger King."
Okay, but that's how things are done now. . I tend to agree that it's somehow not quite dignified for 40, but not sure how to avoid it. . especially since I don't like talking on the phone. . people just go on and on and I get really bored and find an excuse to hang up and then they get butt-hurt.2 -
Where's the age limit on emojis?
Although I draw the line on those monkey emojis1 -

lol! nah I don't think that has anything to do with it. I guess I just have the " right" friends, or I talk to the right people. if people cant appreciate the way I write or talk, then I could care less about what they think, and id prefer to terminate communication with them. im not going to change the way I type/talk/respond/etc to appease them
if anything, females gives me more lols and smiley faces
Uhm. . that's the point. Females can use them freely. That's pretty much accepted.0 -

Sometimes there is no way to word things without it possibly coming across as snarky although no attitude is meant in the statement. Since there is no tone via text, emojis come nicely into play.
I agree!. . They are almost imperative. . particularly if you tend be a bit wry and subtly sarcastic. But I still delete them constantly before I hit send. .0 -

I think that you are overthinking this. Just be you. If they don't like it then F them.3 -

dude, just be you. I have a very energizer bunny personality so it fits the way I text.
if u want, we can have an emoji war! I sometimes tell stories using just emojis
That's pretty cool! I think it would take me much longer to track down the appropriate emojis than it would for me to just type the words out.2 -

Damn guess I better quit using smileys then, I didn't know that there was an age limit to using them.1

I wouldn’t. Just do you. I tend to smile a lot in conversation so as you can imagine there are many emojis being sent while I text. Also a lot of exclamations marks because that’s just me. I probably annoy some. I do not care.
I still use them . .I just try to limit their use to when they're required, instead of just blasting them out ad-infinitum. . I guess the way I currently do it is to treat them like part of the sentence. And, I proofread before I hit send. I look a bit more closely at the emojis and delete them unless they are necessary.2 -

I find lol is too much of a hyperbole sometimes. I prefer to use cab (chuckled a bit) or salts (smiled a little then stopped). But unfortunately No one knows my abbreviations except me4

Note the winky/smiley emoji use.0

telling emoji stories would NOT be "me being me". .1 -

that isn't something I do on the norm. I might of done it twice in the past 10 years lol
It's not entirely true. . I have told a short story using the pointing-finger, the "ok"-hand, the eggplant, the tongue and the devil. . But she started it!1
