My 2 cents.... this right here.... just no. I have conversations with kids all day long. Reading this from a grown man would just make me feel like I'm talking to another child. I don't mind the emojis but that's too excessive for my liking.

Can we go back to the unofficial "No emojis if you're over 40" rule? I'm assuming in 10 years, the limit is 50 right? It's gotta be a generational thing.

You look like you're about 18 so you don't get to make this rule.

My 79 year old father and I have a better relationship via text than we do in person. He occasionally uses the dog emojis because I like dogs. I avoid "lol" though since he has no idea what it means, I just stick to "ha ha".

I see no problem with occasional appropriate use of emojis. An entire conversation peppered with them? That would look a bit juvenile to me. Honestly, I have more difficulty with textspeak like u and ur.

I just stopped myself from typing out an "LOL." It's almost reflex at this point.

    Thanks, I'll take it!

A few of my friends don't speak emoji or even know what they are. And I LOVE them for it.

I knew a girl who hated "lol" so I replaced it with "dntts". .for "Do Not Take This Seriously". . For some reason, she was fine with this. .

How about gifs? Are gifs acceptable? I tend to use gifs more than emojis. I have a couple friends that I can have a complete gif convo with. No words at all and we know exactly what the other is saying.

messenger is heavy on the gifs
text i don't really use emojis, or lol. a smilie here and there and "ha"
if it is not overly done, i have no problem with adults male or female who use them.

but i might be ok if @Will_Workout_for_food texted in emojis.

I've a friend who is over 40 and will thrown in emojis. Not like that just to be silly. It suits him though he has one of those larger than life personalities and is always joking so I think some people can get away with it

I use them, though usually only the  , , to convey expressions or sarcasm. I try not to overuse them. But it is what it is. They can take it or leave it, but I haven't ever had anyone complain to me about it.

I find lol is too much of a hyperbole sometimes. I prefer to use cab (chuckled a bit) or salts (smiled a little then stopped). But unfortunately No one knows my abbreviations except me

I love you for this. <3

Well hell, based on some of the remarks in here I might as well jump in my grave and cover up. :(
  • If used appropriately and sparingly I don't see the problem. Excessive use of emojis screams to me that a man cannot express himself properly with actual words... and I'd get bored, real fast.

No age limit on use of emojis. B)B)
gif convos are my favorite. Also the occasional meme convo.

Regardless of your age, (wtf does that have to do with anything?) if YOU like using emojis, or gifs, or you like texting better than talking on the phone, then do it. It's as simple as that. Geez...

Rules..... We need rules....without them we'd have anarchy!!!!

The "classic" ones are very useful sometimes. Text-based conversation has its limitations, and they play their part in conveying a tone or intention quite well.

Overdoing smilies is just tacky, though. Or ending all sentences in LOL. Or one of them teary laughing emojis. Or both. Ugh
