    I've gained some strength and muscle in my legs without traditional squats and deadlifts (though I did have some advanced bodyweight squats in my routine). It can certainly be done.

    body weight squats and lunges ive found to be very beneficial to basic strength and toning. I've also noticed they are great just to keep my legs loose. I try to do 100 of each every 2nd or 3rd day. just a thought.
