Snowflake - one of the problems is the price of property in the South of England and in hot spots elsewhere in the country. The houses we are selling and buying (just swapping really, with us putting in some extra cash) are well over a million dollars. The extra cash we are putting in would buy a whole house in some places. Hove is one of the most expensive places in the country. We have to sell ours. Yes, we could rent after selling and pay cash, but rents are also sky high, around 2,000 dollars a month for an average place. A waste of money. Plus they all want long tenancies. At the lower price range you often get a 'first time buyer' who has nothing to sell, but the higher up you go in price the longer the chain with people trading up. There has to be a cash purchase at the start of the chain and an empty, or new, property to finish it. When we moved out of London we did rent for 6 months before we bought this house. A tiny cottage in the countryside cost over 1,000 dollars a month. We were able to finance that with the interest on the house sales in London, but there is virtually no interest these days in savings accounts. Then it was 5% , now 1 +% on a short term account.
8 years have passed and house prices and rents are crazy. We have just a very moderate income. Any wealth we have is in the house. It all needs to work smoothly in the chain for us to buy a smaller house for more money in our preferred location, near the grandchildren.
    Love Heather UK xxxxxxx

That's crazy! I hope it works out for you to be near your grandchildren.

Katla - I had another thought about the tax on the CO property - did your DH have to sign off on any of papers at closing since his name was on it?

Further, the property just sold.... so how is CO able to go after him for the tax and not your daughter since the proceeds went to her for the farm? Something just doesn't sound right. I'd probably call escrow company or the bank that handled the closing if you haven't done so already.

The RE agent who said there wouldn't be taxes due -- well, let's just say they aren't too smart sometimes when it comes to matters like this, though it wouldn't hurt to pin them down on that as well. And give them a piece of Pip's boot.

Calling the escrow company might save you a bit of $$ on a far away attorney and if you'll really need one, they might be able to recommend someone as well.

I'm just running this through my brain on how Washington property transactions are handled, maybe doesn't pertain to Colorado at all.... but I do know escrow companies botch things up. Maybe some new employee sent a notice to CO department of revenue that wasn't needed. Crossing fingers!!

Good luck with all this!! <3

    Lanette

Edit - check this out, if it's what they are referring to it should have been withheld by the title company. Pertains to out of state owners.

Rebecca, Charlotte would be okay at my house provided she stayed outside. When they come in..... not so good! We don't have to many of those ugly fat things, thank heavens (had LOTS where I grew up) but what we do have are wolf spiders. These things are black or very dark brown, good size bodies and LONG legs! And no, they are not the daddy long legs, they don't bother me, these things have heavy legs and they are just gross. They get stomped usually although there was one in the garage that I invited outside. I actually trapped it in the tall container that I have for recycling glass bottles (it was empty) and I took it outside and dumped the spider in the bush. Hubby killed one last night that looked to be about the same size so don't know if it was the same one or if it has friends (probably friends!)
Viv in UK my dad was also a hoarder and when he passed (mom was already gone) I was the one who got to get rid of all the junk that was left behind. The house wasn't bad as even though mom was gone he didn't bring any of that junk into the house, but the shop, oh my, the shop! Rusty tools, nails, bits of wood that he had salvaged, not to mention all the "treasures" that he had bought at other people's yard sales with the intention of selling them at a much higher price. He kept having yard sales but it got to the point where nobody would even come and look because it was always the same old junk (and it really was junk!) Broken light fixtures, old extension cords, ugh.
Michele, I haven't forgotten that you are interested in the lara bar recipe, I just need to be doing that on my desktop at home (I'm at work right now) and lately I don't seem to have been home in front of my computer much... Hopefully this weekend!
Heather, so glad that our house selling/buying process isn't so dependent on such a long line of people! Still keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Rye, those kitties are just too cute.
Speaking of cute, the photos of grandkids that have graced these pages lately are so sweet! Love it!
Machka, you certainly have had a lot on your plate in the last six months. I'm not sure I could deal with all that you have had to, but I guess there really is no alternative but to bravely soldier on. I'm with you on the visitors, there would not be a parade of people coming thru our door to "help" either!
Meg, so sorry to hear about your FIL, also sorry that neither you nor your hubby will be able to make the service. You've had a lot on your plate also, just remember to do it all one day at a time.

So, have not had any baked goods or candy or ice cream since Sunday, Sept 10. At first the scale was showing good drops, but apparently I've gotten a little careless lately and it's been creeping back up there. Shall go back to being more vigilant. One problem is that I've started baking bread again, not necessarily every day bread, but made some sourdough bread a few days ago. I was worried that the starter was too sour, and I was kind of right, but I figure now that I've used some of it and replenished it that the next batch won't be quite as sour. Last night I made some garlic french bread, had to try some, so that was a few calories that I did not need to consume. It turned out really good tho! I am feeling better and am starting to sleep better also, both very positive things!
That's it for me for now, trying to catch up with all of you!
Hugs for those who need them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

Did Kelly Coffee Meyer’s Shape Up DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jillian Michael’s No More Trouble Zones DVD.

Allie – I have dense breasts and I wish our insurance paid for 3D mammography! You are lucky that you were able to get it A friend of mine’s dogs used to love carrots and the ribs from romaine lettuce. Even the core from cauliflower or broccoli. I think they like the crunch. They weren’t fond of kale, probably because raw kale can be bitter

Had my mammo and BDS. The gal (for the first time) told me that insurance pays for a BDS once every two years. She called the MD office who said that once in two years is fine. I bet she didn’t mention that I was on Prolia. Vince called insurance who told him that it’s a preventive measure and that they will pay as long as I haven’t had one in this calendar year (which I haven’t). So after waiting I finally did get it. I had to mention that I’d been waiting over ½ a hour and I usually don’t wait that long. I had no desire to sit there all day

    Lisa (((HUG)))

Think I’ll go string some popcorn now.

    Off to see Grease soon.

Katla: My brother was in a similar situation as your DH. We had him on the title of our Honolulu condo, and when it sold, the escrow company withheld his portion of taxes, even though he got none of the revenue. He filed a short form to Hawaii tax department and got it all refunded to him. Agree with Lanette, contact the escrow company for clarification. I don't personally know any RE attorneys in CO...sorry.

Michele: Glad you are getting off the crazy Newcomer train. Time to volunteer where you and Vince are appreciated.

Lisa: Sorry you had a rough week. If you need to vent, you know how to find me.

Viv and Marcelyn: Welcome back!!! So nice to see you back with us again.

Had my bone density scan yesterday. Then I went to the carwash, and they were so slow, they offered me a detail for 30% off and done in half the time. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, so I went for it. Spent a lot of the time listening to podcasts and pacing the hallway, which made my fitbit happy. Car is gleaming inside and out, which makes me happy.

Stay well friends. We can do this. If you can't, Pip has a boot for you.

I have to guess (from what I've observed and a few comments along the way) that the majority of people they deal with fall into 2 categories:

    1) elderly ... with lots of kids and grandkids, and maybe living in something like a retirement community where people do know each other.

My parents live in a place like that and when my father had his heart attack, several neighbours came over with food and to check on my mother, and when someone was out mowing their lawn, they came over and did my parents' lawn as well. Things like that.

And I've seen the crowds of family coming to visit some of the patients in the Neuro ward and Rehab.

    2) young ... quite often with parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. nearby.

I was talking with the head nurse in Rehab the other day who told me that they get quite a few brain injury patients between 20 and 40 because of sports and risky behaviour. And they usually come into Rehab with parents, siblings, cousins, etc.

That head nurse told me that my husband is a bit unusual ... they don't usually get people between about 40 and maybe 80 because that age group has usually settled down and don't do much anymore, but they're young enough not to have the falls or strokes that an elderly person might.

So some of the communication difficulties I've had with Rehab are because they aren't used to dealing with someone in my husband's situation either.

While all this is happening with my husband, my grandmother who is 97 years old is deteriorating. She was in a retirement home, in a studio apartment. One of these places where they supply dinners, but she could do her own lunches etc. She was doing all right, then one day she had at least one fall (probably more) and the staff found her on the floor. She had hit her head ... not as badly as my husband, but she is displaying some of his symptoms. She's been in hospital for a while, and now she's living with my aunt and uncle. My parents are helping out as well.

So I've been debating whether it would be worth it to go for a visit ... we were supposed to go last July. And whether my husband could tolerate the flight. Or whether it would just be stressful for everyone if we did that.

Also ... I've been to the Dr about my mouth. I've got a broken tooth on the right side, but worse, I've developed a lot of jaw pain on the left to the point where I can't open my mouth very much.

She's guessing it might be one of 3 things: an infection, TMJ, or arthritis.

She's treating the possible infection first.

Sharon in Seattle: Thanks for the idea on the CO tax situation. Our daughter says she is going to resolve it. I’m doubtful that she can, but grateful that she wants to try. We have an appointment to talk to our accountant and get advice from him. We may need a CO attorney at some point, but we’re taking things one day at a time. :flowerforyou:

(((Heather))) Wishing you good luck. :star:

Lanette: The problem is that my husband was a co-owner on the title and not a resident of Colorado. Colorado has a special tax for nonresidents who sell CO real-estate. DD thinks she can straighten it out. I’m happy to let her try but I suspect we’re going to pay Colorado thousands. This is a clear example of “No good deed goes unpunished.” :grumble:

Rori: Thank you for the advice. :star:

M in OZ: I hope you are able to get your teeth taken care of soon. It sounds painful and horrible. :flowerforyou:

We are planning to visit with our own accountant soon for advice on the real estate sales tax that Colorado wants us to pay. DD says she will take care of it, as all of the proceeds of the sale are in her accounts. On another topic, the RV is in the shop getting work done on the brakes. We had something go wrong during our drive home from DSIL’s place.

Katla I remember something like this when I had my name on my brother's house in Denver. I think I had to sign an affidavit saying that I would not owe Colorado any income tax in order for the money not to be withheld by the title company. It's been a number of years ago, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. I hope there is something simple that you can do to get out of it. I know it's a pain.

Good morning lovelies! Up, coffeed and on my way to do the grocery shopping. I have Trentin today and tomorrow from 11am-10:30pm (mom picking up a late shift). Going to be a long couple of days. BUT, there is a wildlife group that I belong to and they have annual photo "scavenger hunts". This year's hunt begins today. All photos must be taken in Michigan, taken and dated from today's date on... There is a list of 96 things we have to find and photograph. Some are easy (acorns, ants), some are harder (frost, butterfly, caterpillar). lol Last week I saw quite a few butterflies and caterpillars; but the temps have dropped and I am thinking they are going to be very hard to find. Anyway, Trentin and I will work on that today and tomorrow and get some walking/hiking in.
I FINALLY got a call from the trucking company that is delivering my grant/daycare materials! Woo-hoo! They will deliver on Thursday! I am so excited! The driver will give me a call 30 minutes before they arrive; so that will give me enough time to get home if the kids and I are walking or get the kids situated so that they are out of the way when the order arrives.
Machka- Sorry about your tooth/jaw pain. Hopefully it is just clenching while you sleep? I do that when I am stressed and wake up with sore jaws. If that is the case, they will make you a mouth guard to wear while you sleep.
Speaking of Machka and her tooth pain; reminds me of Wendy and her bee propolis for fighting tooth issues. Wendy where are you? I miss you!

Well, time to get the shopping done! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Rori - You're the best, thank you for that offer. I'm seriously thinking about writing a book about this whole process and publishing it later with names changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. I'll reach out during this upcoming week.

Listening to the dryer cycling through the last load and will probably just go ahead and put many of the clothes right into the suitcase, as I'll be flying out again a week from tomorrow. Short trip this time, flying Sunday the 30th, back home Wednesday night. Big event, but a much more relaxed, less formal occasion and a lot more help from the staff, as we're holding it at our program center in Midland.

Had to get a new phone, as the battery on my old one was integral, and unswitchable, and had developed an unnerving habit of shutting the phone down almost every time it got to 30 percent. Always at a crucial time when I needed it, of course. And then in the last few weeks, started shutting itself down at the 50 percent mark. Does anyone else remember when you got the phone upgrades for free? Yeah, that doesn't happen anymore. Could have spent nearly a thousand dollars on a new phone, but that's just crazy. Unfortunately, when I restored the backup information, it randomly brought in less than half my contacts, so spent a few hours yesterday (in between naps) entering all my contacts and going out to find the apps I use all the time.

On the bright side, it did give me the chance to get rid of a bunch of them that I didn't need, as well as a number of apps I never use...and I LOVE the quick memo function that came with the phone, so I can add a voice memo for reminders of all the bitsy-bob things that I keep forgetting. Now if I just remember to check the list...

Machka - I grind my teeth unmercifully, and particularly when under stress. Literally destroyed one of my back teeth a few years back, part of it just shattered. Luckily, not enough to expose the nerve, so they were able to fill it. Don't know if your dental care is expensive - but a company called Plackers makes these minimal intrusion small guards that can be worn either on upper or lower teeth that work quite well when I remember to wear them. I've had dentists make mouth guards as well, which get quite expensive, and these work just as well, can be cleaned for wearing three or four times, and then disposed of.

Once Corey's up, we'll head for the mountain house--he's working on the bedroom ceiling, and I'll be painting the trim in the living room and office. At the moment, that sounds quite restful and productive at the same time.

    Love y'all,
Thank you for all the hugs while I traipse through this wild and wooly travel schedule. Only three more in October, then (supposedly) I'm done for this year.

lisa painting trim does sound zen like ;) and once October is behind you, every day will be zen like ;);)

Kelly would love to see pics of all the new grant stuff when you get it set up—what fun!

Off for a weekend drive to peep at houses with our friend the realtor—nothing serious, just researching.

Finally have a break in the heat and it’s starting to feel a little like fall—my favorite season in the Hudson Valley.
