So there's been a huge murder trial going on here in Chicago the past week or so (Cop killed a young man... there have been protesters all over the place during the trial.). The closing arguments were yesterday and the jury has been deliberating ever since. The police are expecting riots if people don't like the verdict. The police presence has been increased all over the city.
They picked a hell of a weekend to do this. The Chicago Marathon is Sunday. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the jury doesn't reach a verdict until Monday. Otherwise things could get very, very ugly.
In other news, my legs are a wee bit sore after my first run in a couple months. Trying to figure out when w1d3 is going to be. Hopefully Saturday, so I can start week 2 on Monday.

High Five @hesn92 for getting up early. I'm not sure I'd remember ANY key, so good on ya for that much.
@MegaMooseEsq - enjoy the concert, and good luck tomorrow!
@RespectTheKitty - crossing my fingers with you for that verdict.
As for me, I had a massage last night which was scheduled past my bedtime, so getting up this morning was a little rough. My everything hurts today but I know it's for the best. I haven't been stretching or foam rolling at all for a very long time, so I expected to be sore. Luckily for me, my dogs don't care about how I feel and gave me the push I needed to get out and do W1D2.7 -
We’re on the way back to my in-laws from the Adirondacks, and tomorrow we fly back to Ga. Between my sore knee from Wineglass and the rainy weather, I haven’t run at all. We did do one short hike while here, and we walked quite a bit on a day trip to Montréal. I’m hoping to get in a run tomorrow before we leave. I’m NOT looking forward to the hot weather at home next week.
Here’s a view of Lake Placid from a drive and walk up Whiteface Mountain this morning.

10/2 8miles
10/3 5miles
10/4 rest
10/5 5miles
Something happened to the nice cooler weather... it’s back to being hot again. At least the humidity is lower. Still 85 degrees in October kinda sucks.
I’m kinda tapering for my race this Sunday. I rearranged my plan to run my “longer” runs at the beginning and stacking my rest days towards the end. I’m still convincing myself to run easy on Sunday, but the adrenaline and race atmosphere might trick me. I don’t want to be disappointed in myself at the end.
3/18/2018 Shamrock half marathon

10/02/18 - swim (about half a mile)
10/03/18 - rest
10/04/18 - 5 mile treadmill run
So that's a grand total of 11.2 mile so far this month. I'm having a rest tonight and then will do a parkrun tomorrow.
Sunday will be a rest day and Monday is my 10k Columbus Day race. My goal is to finish under an hour, which I know I can do, but because this race has a pretty large field, I always end up stuck in bottle-necks behind the people who don't know how to seed themselves.

My husband thinks running is stupid and will often comment that "you never see anyone smiling while they're running, they always look miserable." Well. sometimes I do smile just to prove him wrong lol. Not that he can actually see me or anything.8 -
I smile most of the time and wave to all who pass, sometimes say "Good Morning!" if I am not so lost in my head. Something I started doing about three years ago, to get my neighbors aware that walkers and runners exist and we do see.

The verdict is in. The officer has been found guilty of second-degree murder, among other counts.
This is good news... there will be peace in Chicago for the marathon.
I would hate to be on that jury, though. What a tough case.
Edit - Apparently MFP didn't like the officer's name and gave it the kitten treatment.9 -

@AlphaHowls I have an honest question for you. How do you log that kind of mileage and not have any major issues with injury?
As soon as I started running HMs, that's when my hip started giving me trouble. I haven't been able to get past the 13 mile mark, and I've never been able to do back-to-back double digit runs. I'm just insanely curious as to how you manage to do keep it up.1 -

HAHAHAHA (I have the same last name as the officer). But glad to hear that it should be calm streets for the marathon.1 -

That's ironic, because My friend just received an email from Chicago Public Schools saying:
Attention CPS Parents and Families:
This is Chicago Public Schools with important information.
Out of an abundance of caution, all CPS athletic competitions are canceled for Friday, October 5. Your school will provide an update if they decide to cancel other after-school activities today. All scheduled weekend activities are also canceled.
Classes are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, October 9.
Please help ensure this important information is heard by passing it on to your friends and family with children in CPS schools.
I guess they sent that out before the verdict. Well glad there won't be a riot anyway!1 -
So as a noob runner I have a question for those who wake up early to run... I just started doing it this week so it doesn't interfere with family time after work. But this morning when I went on my run I felt dehydrated and thirsty. Obviously after sleeping all night I hadn't had much water, just a little bit when I woke up. Do you like, chug water before running or what?2

October Running Totals (miles)
10/1 – rest day
10/2 – 3.03 recovery run
10/3 – 5.04 group run
10/4 – 4.97 warm up, 2 miles @T, cool down
10/5 – rest day
October running total to date – 13.04
Nominal October mileage goal: 150 miles
Real Goals: Recover well from Wineglass. Avoid reinjury. Build volume only to the extent consistent with recovery and injury avoidance.
Today's notes – Didn't post an update for the last 2 days, but I did run. Wednesday was the next-to-last Wednesday group run. We had a half dozen guys there, including a club team mate of mine. It was a shortish route, 5 miles with no significant hills, which suited me fine 3 days after running a marathon. Started slow, and by about 3 miles I was up to an 8:00 or so pace. Asked Bill if that was okay, and he thought it would be for just 5 miles. Didn't want to wear him out, because he had a really tough interval workout scheduled for Thursday, as part of his plan training for the Dublin (Ireland) marathon.
Thursday was kickoff evening for the next session of half and full marathon training that I pace for. This involves a 2 mile time trial that is used to determine which pace group the trainees start with for long runs. I have traditionally acted as the rabbit for the time trial; but 4 days after a marathon, I was not going to run it as a true time trial effort. The club cross country workout for Thursday was 10 minutes at threshold (I forgot how much recovery) then one set of 15 second cutbacks starting at 1:30. I figured 2 miles at threshold and skip the cutbacks would be good enough.
There was actually one trainee who set out ahead of me and stayed ahead for 3 of 4 loops. I think I sped up a bit, and he held a pretty steady pace. After my 2 miles (13:13), I ran a couple of loops to talk to trainees and coold down. Total, including commute to and from the store, was close to 5 miles. That was about all my hip abductors would take yesterday.
Today is a planned rest day. It appears I didn't damage myself yesterday, but it's good to honor rest days anyway. Tomorrow I will pace 8 miles at either 8:00 or 8:30 pace, depending on demand. There were a couple of trainees assigned to 8:30, and the regular 8:30 pacer is off pacing a half marathon tomorrow, so I think it's likely I'll need to slow down to 8:30. Won't hurt me, 6 days after a marathon.
I decided I feel good enough to run PG XC #2 on Sunday, and notified my team captain. Told him I probably shouldn't run it as an A race, and he'll do whatever he does. I expect he'll put me on the A team anyway, because I don't think we have 5 guys who are faster than my less-than-all-out race pace.
I also bought the professional picture package from Wineglass. For whoever it was that thinks runners don't smile, is this shot from about 23 miles good enough?

I don't get up early to run most mornings, but I do for Saturday paced long runs and races. I *have* to drink at least a 16 ounce (~ 0.5 liter) glass of water in the morning. If time allows, I also have coffee. But I don't chug the water; I get up early enough to eat breakfast first, and drink the water at a reasonable pace. That wouldn't be sustainable for 5 days a week without going to bed at something like 8 PM, but it works when I'm only getting up at 4:15 or 4:30 one day a week.4 -
@MobyCarp I have to say the Wineglass photos are some of the best running photos I’ve had, and they caught me smiling a good bit too!5
-
This is mile 11 of 13.1 on Saturday.
I'm not at all photogenic. I had just popped some sport beans w/ caffeine for a push the last two miles and my groin was throbbing from my earlier fall.
22 -
October goal: a 10k at least once a week
10/1 3.13
10/2 rest
10/3 3.20
10/4 spent all day rehearsing with my band "The Kukui Nuts" for an open mic night.
Goals were 1. don't embarrass ourselves. 2. don't get boo'd off the stage. We survived....
10/5 6.30
Total 12.63
Upcoming races:
Nov. 11, 2018 Las Vegas Rock 'n Roll 10k
January 4, 2019 Hilo to Volcano Ultra 50k Relay. In memory of @keeprunningfatboy
Ticker is my goal for 2018 and progress to date:

@hesn92 I drink a cup of coffee and most of a 20 oz. Yeti of water before my morning runs. I don't really chug it though. I just sip on it while I am getting dressed. I also take water with me but only usually drink it if it is really hot.
Same. I don't drink coffee before I run but sip 8-16 oz while I eat and get dressed and then take 8-16 with me2 -
I’m a morning runner. I drink a half to a full cup of coffee before heading out. I try to stay hydrated in general so I’m not waking up dehydrated. I have been tracking my water intake and try to get at least 60 oz per day. I don’t count coffee or diet soda and I drink quite a bit of both on top of 60 oz of straight water.
Anyway all that to say, drink some water before you go and think about getting a small hand held water bottle. I have one of these:
https://www.nathansports.com/hydration/hydration-handhelds
2 -
@hesn92 No food or water for me prior to my morning runs, otherwise I'd be needing the bathroom during it. I don't even carry water...my routes take me past either water fountains or my workplace if I need water during the run, otherwise I just wait until I'm done and have a bottle of sports drink when I'm finished. Everyone's different though, so you just need to experiment and find a hydration plan that works best for you.
Today was a long run of 22 miles; the first 5 being a nice gentle warm-up, followed by 11 miles run at a pace that was within 20% of marathon pace, then 5 miles within 10% of MP, and finally one last mile as a cool-down. I had originally mapped out 21 miles for this run, but decided on the fly to add a section in so that I could have that last cool-down mile to help speed up recovery.
01 - 15.63
02 - 14.43
03 - 10.21
04 - 12.19
05 - 22.04
Total: 74.50 / 250 miles8 -
I was going to run tonight but my ankle is really irritated from the amount of walking I've had to do this week due to car problems and I want to be able to run my race on Sunday so I'm resting today and tomorrow.
Sigh.9 -
Drove the course this evening for the HM and oh HOLY *KITTEN* what did I get myself into? Not as hilly as running Athens but more hills than Atlanta. Will be an interesting long slow run tomorrow and definitely going to have to add hill repeats to my regimen over the next several weeks. Probably should have added them already on general principle but meh.9
-
3.11 miles treadmill before strength training.
My insulin pump stopped working this morning and I won't have a replacement until late tomorrow. Will try to do my long run without it as I'm trying to manage shots for now, but will be interesting.

I get up at 4 AM to run. I have not had water or eaten since 6 PM the night before. When I wake up at night to use the restroom, I do sip water. I carry my water with me, on every run, no matter the distance. I have a belt with two 8 oz bottles and this week have a new belt with four 8 oz. bottles. I used the new belt for my 26 miles and it was awesome not having to worry about water.
