I’m 5’3” and even at my lowest weight at sedentary-lightly active (I lift 3x weekly, plus housework), I maintained at 1800.....
Second that huh...
I’m 5’3” and maintain on 2800ish
I'm 5'3", 67 years old and weigh 105 lbs. Even my sedentary maintenance calorie goal is 1230. With even moderate activity I maintain at 1600-1800. And my metabolism is just average, not fast or slow. I definitely believe you're undercounting your calories.10 -
I'm 5'1", 124-25lbs, and my estimated maintenance is around 2400 calories a day. There is something seriously off with your logging if you think you can only maintain on 1000 calories a day. Get a food scale and start using it diligently for several weeks. I guarantee you'll be surprised by how much you're really eating.9
-
Will do. I’m just saying maybe I’m different or metabolism is shot. When I eat 2000 calories or more I gain! I need a deficit. Does anybody understand. Plus I’m obese I’m not fit with a high metabolism. If I’m wrong then why is the scale moving down instead of staying the same? I’m here to lose not gain. Sorry just frustrated with the advice. ❤️Tasha9

You are way smaller than I am. My maintenance will not be the same I’m 100 lbs heavier.....5
-
Everyone replying is not obese or if they have been not mentioning it. My weight and deficit will not be like yours. Does anyone get this? In order for me to lose I have to restrict calories. I have to burn more than I eat.12

First off, 5'3" isn't short.
Second, to counter your data point, I'm 5'4", and maintain at 2100-2300. I assure you that that inch does not magically equal 1100 to 1300 calories.
Maybe if you do absolutely nothing and you literally sleep all day and have no muscle mass, you maintain at 1000, but without seeing your logs, or your stats, it's impossible to say.collectingblues wrote: »mistypoison wrote: »I'm 5ft 3" and maintain at 1000. No, but you shouldn't be eating under 1,000. At my heaviest, (254lbs) I was losing lb/week on 1710 before exercise.10 -
Misty I agree everyone is not the same. Collectingblues what’s your stats please? I’m 5’3 225 pounds. I need a deficit to lose. If you van maintain at 2300 and I gain we are not the same.9

I am under 5 feet tall, have a sedentary job, and I maintain in the middle of my optimal BMI range on 1400 not counting exercise. You're either eating more than you think you are, maintaining at a weight that is very low for your height, or there is something else medically wrong. Saying that does not constitute "hate" or "freaking out." 1200 is the minimum calorie intake recommended for women, and you're giving potentially dangerous advice by advocating eating less than that.mistypoison wrote: »I'm 5ft 3" and maintain at 1000. Listen everyone I’m not here to give bad advice or bash anyone who eat high calories and lose or maintain. I’m just saying on most days not all if I restrict my calories and walk my 4 miles a day I lose weight. Some days it’s 1000 some days 800 or I eat over 1400 1700 2000. But at the end of the week if I create a deficit I lose. Eating over 1000 calories everyday doesn’t work for me. Sorry. Thanks for all the insight. ❤️Tasha8

You're right. If you're 100 pounds heavier, your maintenance will be even higher. It takes more calories to maintain a larger body.19 -
Thank you. Finally someone who gets it!!!10

There's creating a deficit and then there's creating an unsafe overly aggressive deficit.

Are you seriously saying that you maintain on less than a normal three-year-old?8 -
onedownchic wrote: »You are way smaller than I am. My maintenance will not be the same I’m 100 lbs heavier.....
The larger a person is, the more calories they burn, in general. A smaller (non-obese) person should expect to have lower maintenance calories than an obese person.
When I was obese, I burned more calories just being alive than I do now, as a healthy-weight person. For any given period of exercise at X intensity, I burned more calories as an obese person than I do now as a healthy weight person.
We expect your maintenance to be higher than maintenance for a thin person, so we expect that you'd lose weight at X rate per week on higher calories than would someone who is thinner. Some people have unusually low calorie needs, but it's quite rare. When it happens, there is sometimes a medical condition involved. If one's obesity makes one very inactive, that affects calorie burn . . . but it isn't the obesity per se causing the effect, it's the inactivity. There can be individual variations that are not a medical condition or inactivity, but it's very rare that that effect is very large (in terms of number of calories).11 -
I’m saying I don’t lose. I maintain or gain if I don’t restrict my calories. My BMR IS 1451 to 1600 or so. So when I eat more no exercise I stay the same. However when I create a deficit and eat 1000 calories I lose. That’s all I’m saying.13

Thanks for this!!! Yes I’m obese working my way down. My findings were based on 6 months of cross fit. Which is cardio and strength training. I didn’t lose one pound in 6 months. I was eating the recommended calories and the ones I burned as suggested. I stayed the same weight. I was eating 1450-2000 calories a day. No loss for 6 months!!! So I created a deficit and counted meticulously!! I begin losing by cutting more calories. That’s it 🤷🏽♀️6 -

Of course you have to restrict your calories. Nobody's saying otherwise. But if your BMR is 1451 to 1600, that's the bare minimum to keep yourself alive. That's not something to eat below. Did you mean TDEE? Because a safe deficit is somewhere above BMR and below TDEE.8 -
Today I burned 900 calories jogging and walking. MFP adds your burn for you to eat. But no lie if I notice I said I obese person eat all the calories I burned.... I won’t lose. I may stay the same or even gain. Maybe it’s just me! I have went to the doctor nothings wrong with me medically. He said keep burning more than you eat. 🤷🏽♀️6

Yes my body fat is 50% TDEE IS 1761.. I did all this. I got on a body composition scale. I have gained muscle metabolism improved a bit but I didn’t lose weight. Like I said 🤷🏽♀️. Now I’m walking 4 miles a day and eating 1000 calories some times more or less but every week now I’m losing 🤷🏽♀️4

What suggestions are you looking for exactly? Do you use a food scale?9

I'm 5'2" and started here at 222lbs. I am no longer 222lbs, I am not at maintenance yet, but sometimes life gets in the way. I'm not sure if I qualify to give my thoughts on this or not. I'm also middle aged and currently mostly sedentary (think less than 3000 steps per day) due to medical issues. I maintain on 1900 calories per day (determined by recent two week diet break). So I can lose eating anything less than 1900 calories per day. When I was active (about 8000 steps per day, kickboxing 1-2 times per week, swimming 3-5 times per week, and strength training 2-3 times per week) I was losing 2lb/week while eating 1700 calories per day.
But I needed to be as accurate as possible with my logging. That meant cooking at home as much as possible. Taking lunches to work. I did have lunch weekly with a friend, and a drink (one) with other friends once or twice per month. Using a food scale to weigh everything (vegetables, prepackaged foods, things that had their own wrapper) opened my eyes to how far off packaging can be for weight and thereby how many calories are actually in the package. Additionally, there are a lot of incorrect database entries, and it took a bit more time in the early weeks to make sure I had accurate ones, or create my own.
If you open your diary, people can look to see if you have some inaccuracies in there. They sneak in when you don't even realize it. When I first started, I had myself convinced that I was eating in a calorie deficit. The problem: logging inaccuracies, and thinking that I was more active and therefore eating too many of my exercise calories. When I stopped deceiving myself and stopped making excuses, I made progress.
The people you are dismissing have been successful, several of them are people that I have learned a lot from along the way. I'm thankful that I didn't dismiss them, but I did have to make the decision to be open to the idea that I might be wrong.18 -

You are right. We are not the same. However, the more you weigh the more you can eat and still lose weight as your BMR is significantly higher. If someone that is 5 foot can lose weight on 1200 calories that means you can eat a lot more and still lose weight. Put your stats correctly into MFP and eat those calories given to you. However, you need to make sure you are logging accurately by weighing everything that enters your mouth, including prepackaged food. You need to check all entries against the nutritional labels on the packaging or the USDA database. You are either eating a considerable amount more than you think you are, or you have a very serious metabolic issue that you need to discuss with your doctor if you think you are not losing weight unless you are only eating1000 calories a day. I am hedging my bets on the fact that you are eating more than you think you are.6 -
I’m looking for support and advice. I do use a good scale. Mainly for protein which I can have a lot of!!! Lol. I was sharing my weight loss woes. I shared that I tried all the eating my suggested calories and working out. I did this for 6 months. I gained muscle but no weight loss. Most days I consume small healthy meals 3 to 5 times a day. I noticed while eating 1000 calories mostly I began Losing weight. But once I shared it everyone Chimed in on how that’s too low etc... it’s working for me. If I do take the advice I’ll gain... Everyone has to remember I’m obese so my fat starts burning stored fat.7

I really don't think you're understanding what people are saying, so I'm not going to beat my head against the wall trying to help. You are not getting enough nutrition to keep your body healthy at 1000 calories, but then again given your rate of loss, you aren't eating 1000 calories per day. If you decide you want some actual help, then let people know.16 -
Thanks sooo much. I’m receptive. I truly am. Even my trainer at gym said to eat more... i just don’t lose. I’ll start again. Maybe I’m losing at 1400 or 1500 or 1700. Maybe my logging is off. I started counting gum crystal light everything now... just frustrated because as soon as I eat more the scale will move upward... sighs6
