Did a gentle 5k this morning with a good stretch and roll. No real sore spots. Calves were a little tight but I'm all good. This time tomorrow I'll be standing around the start, jumping around to keep warm and fight off nerves! Weather is supposed to be clear, a little cloudy with light breezes. OMG im so excited!
All the very best tomorrow Kim. You’ll have such a great day. I’ll be thinking of you while I slog it out in Waihi - not looking forward to mine; it could be a looooong day.
Thanks! And I'll be thinking of you, I know you will be hating but loving every second of it!1 -
@Avidkeo Go get 'em!!!!! Enjoy yourself and rush back to tell us all about it :-)

Today's notes – The hourly weather forecast called for snow late this afternoon and this evening. It’s November. While I don’t mind running in the snow, I detest driving in the snow in Christmas traffic. I’m always pleased when the serious snow doesn’t show up until December 26 or later; but this week we’re in the middle of the first Lake Effect Snow event of the season, and it’s early in Christmas traffic season. Bleah.
With that backdrop, I decided to get out and run before lunch. There were a few flakes in the air, no big deal. The roads were clear. The idea was to run 5 easy miles. Less than a mile in, it seemed prudent to alter the route to give myself and option to bail early. The sore hamstring didn’t hurt; but it let me know it was there. Ran a loop that turned out to be very close to 5K, with an option to add distance closer to home. Ended up not adding any distance. I told myself I’d go to club practice this evening and just run the 2 mile warmup, if the leg felt good.
Well, at time to leave for club practice it had started snowing. I thought about driving across town in rush hour traffic and snow, leaving my car sitting in an uncovered parking lot for a couple hours, dealing with snow on the car, driving back home, and dealing with snow tracked into the garage. Decided to stay home and give the hamstring more rest. So about a 5K was it for today.
I did commit to the 8K of XC on Sunday via email. Told my team captain I think I’ll be up for the distance, but probably not in shape to finish ahead of Syracuse’s lead runner. Now he’ll declare the team however he sees it to give us the best chances. Realistically, even hurt I’ll probably be our team’s second scorer. Sigh.
We’re supposed to get more snow tomorrow. I may get out and see if the hamstring is better tomorrow than it is today, or I may not. Friday is normally a rest day, and in theory I should be pacing 10 to 14 miles Saturday morning; Saturday may be a late scratch to give myself a better chance of doing well on Sunday.
Now if I can just survive one little 8K cross country race, and rest or run easy between Sunday and Thanksgiving, maybe I’ll survive all my scheduled races without extended couch time.

No run today. Ditsy teenager missed his bus home from school. I was informed I had to go get him, and that telling him to walk home the 13 miles in the snow was not acceptable. Bah kids these days are so babied.13

@Avidkeo Best of luck in your race!
@MobyCarp We got snow here yesterday. I can't remember ever getting snow here in November, in forty years.
Lifted heavy stuff with my upper body yesterday and lower body today - it was icy and cold, and the rest of the week is supposed to be warmer, plus I have been giving my lifting short shrift lately while I was upping my mileage. Now that my half is over I need to get back to a more balanced program.5 -

Had time for a run this morning in Boston before my conference responsibilities started. It was pretty cold and I hadn't packed quite what I wanted for that temp, but enjoyed the run. I felt good and my ankle did not hurt at all, either during or after. Now it's snowing here and supposed to turn to rain overnight. I don't think I'll have time to get a run tomorrow at all, unless I skip out on something as I've got events from early am through the evening. But hoping that Saturday will offer another chance before I leave.

Have a great race @Avidkeo 😆.1

Oh @HonuNui - love the turtle!!
Good luck @avidkeo! By the time I am up you will probably be finished and enjoying a post race chocolate milk and/or banana. Great job on the fund raising too!
While I am off from running, my trainer is moving me to lifting heavy with less reps. After the 1st of the year when I can start running again we will drop back to more reps and lighter weights. I am also to put together a training plan for cardio and additional workouts at home for the next 6-8 weeks along with a plan for re-entering the running world. I don't have a race on the schedule until May (thank goodness I hadn't signed up for my normal Legacy races) so I am thinking of starting back with something along the lines of a Couch to whatever... and build up to my HM training plan. He wants me to have a very well defined plan that I am strict with adherence so I don't over do it and re-injure myself.10 -
@shanaber sounds sensible! You have plenty of time to do it without rushing anything and putting yourself at extra risk.
I had a lightbulb moment this morning on my way home after my run. I've been beating myself up for a few runs now about the fact that I seem to be running faster than my very conservative (self-imposed so I shouldn't hurt anything) HM target pace and can't slow down. I really do try to make myself go slower but it just doesn't happen. Then it suddenly dawned on me..... maybe all this training is just making me faster? I think I prefer that theory to the "I'm so useless I can't pace myself" one!
2/11: 7km
4/11: 11km
6/11: 7km
7/11: 5km
9/11: 7km
11/11: 13km
13/11: 8km
14/11: 5km
16/11: 8km
November goal: 125km. Completed so far: 71km9 -
Hi all - I did hang around here a couple of years ago when I first started running but found I couldn't keep up with the volume of messages especially given the time difference, (I'm UK based so found majority of messages were posted whilst I was asleep!). Anyhow, I'm back to join in again.
In the meantime I managed to complete the London Marathon in April this year - the most amazing experience! Just a few weeks before the race I lost my two opportunities for 20mile+ runs due to snow, so my longest run pre-marathon was 30km (~18.5miles) - not ideal preparation as was effectively a 5-week rather than 3-week taper! It then turned out to be the hottest London Marathon on record at about 25C, so I was just pleased to complete it though I had to take some walking breaks. 5h03 was my official time - I reckon 4h20 was on the cards if conditions were favourable.
I backed right off from running since then until last month when my bike broke and started to run commute. For some reason that inspired me to enter another marathon next year, (Brighton in April), to see what I can really do - assuming weather cooperates. As such, I'm back in order to try to keep myself on track. As with all my running to date I'm using self-devised training "plans" - i.e. a list of distances I want to cover in each week but not tied to days of week or run-types. At the moment I just try to ensure I mix in some hills, trail runs and some faster pace running when I can. I'm also hoping to get a half scheduled, likely February, to practice running MP in race conditions. Assuming all goes well between now and Xmas, after that I may try some more formalised workouts as there is no real method to what I've been doing so far in my running.
My distance aim was for November is 185km and I'm at 59.6km right now having been ill for the first week of the month. I'm still hoping to get to that number though it might be tight.
November: 59.6km / 185km (MTD/Target)
Upcoming Races (Confirmed)
14-April-2019: Brighton Marathon17 -

@dkabambe welcome back. If the reason you left a few years ago was due to the volume of posts in this thread, well uh, I'm afraid to tell you, they are probably 2x that now
But we still are all supportive and willing to help. Good luck with your training (and keeping up with the posts)4 -
Thanks @Scott6255 - I had noticed there were a lot more threads. I have to be honest and admit whilst the volume of threads did get on top of me, getting into a new relationship and thus losing my "free" time was the underlying reason.
NB: That relationship still going strong, but I've recently ditched facebook and other soul-sucking social media sites so can spend time places like here which actually have positive effect!12 -
Count me in as well, working on c25k challenge at the moment 👍😀8

@shanaber - that's great your trainer has you mixing up your lifting while off running. I cannot believe how addicted I am to lifting at the moment. And running. And cycling. And eating.
Awesome temps in FL this morning. We are supposed to have a nice week.
I'm off school next week! Tomorrow I take students to a programming competition all day so I'm going to have to take a rest day. It's too far away to run before hand and afterwards I'm busy. Oh well, since I'm off all next week I'll make it up.
Love the two cartoons! (marathon map and our inexpensive sport)

@katharmonic welcome to snowy Boston! I'm working from home right now but am about to head into the city for a meeting.
If you fancy a run tomorrow, the parkrun crew at Jamaica Pond are very friendly (it's a weekly 5k with a 9:00am start, followed by coffee and chat at a local coffee shop). I won't be there because I've got a race tomorrow morning. Gonna be a cold one.5 -
First of all -- I am so glad I found this thread. I feel such accountability here. Secondly, I must confess a non scheduled rest day yesterday and a scheduled no run tonight.
Tomorrow is the EARLY BIRD TURKEY TROT 5K. It will be a balmy 35 degrees, not looking forward to this... I'm from the South, we don't handle cold well My running partner has developed strep throat, so looks like I will be solo. Not a huge deal, but I do enjoy the commute with her -we actually run apart.
After tomorrow, I have nothing "OFFICIAL" scheduled until 12/01. Is it just me or does anyone else feel more active when you run stuff you have to pay for... Maybe it is the satisfaction of crossing the finish line.
Hmmm... wonder if my neighbors would mind if I put one of those blow up arches on our street?
EVERYONE HAVE AN AWESOME DAY!!!
