I don't know if anyone else read this article in Runner's World on the new physical activity guidelines for adults but they haven't really changed much. What really got me was the line in bold!
'Experts still recommend that adults log at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes moderate-intensity (say, like brisk walking) each week, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, like running. An equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity would work, too.
The guidelines still continue to emphasize the importance of a balanced exercise routine. You should be shooting for two or more days of strength training a week, too.
You’re probably already familiar with those numbers, but they definitely deserve repeating, since the majority of Americans are falling short of those guidelines. In fact, 50 percent of Americans don’t meet the recommended 150 to 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity and 30 percent of people report no physical activity at all'
@shanaber I just had to do the math, out of curiosity. So far, for the ~48 weeks of 2018, I've done 162h of running and 62h of cycling (assuming that counts as vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity? not counting things like climbing, skiing or hiking, since there's no easy way to see the yearly total on strava). Run + bike give me an average of 280min per week, so 'm good. *phew*
"30% report no physical activity at all" is kind of sad...

Has anybody ever heard of the "drop test" to see if running shoes should be replaced? I just read this on the polar blog ( https://www.polar.com/blog/when-to-replace-running-shoes-toss-your-trainers/ ).
    3. HOLD THE SHOE 4–5” ABOVE A HARDWOOD SURFACE AND DROP IT

If it rocks back and forth or front to back from a gentle drop for more than half a second, that’s a sign the cushioning isn’t bouncing back the way it once was. The shoe has probably started to depress, and can alter your biomechanical form.
I just tried, and the three pairs I own that have 500+km (300+mi) indeed all (seem to?) rock around longer than the two pairs that are only at one third of that distance. Coincidence , or a good test method, and I should buy new shoes?

E.t.a. of course I want to buy new shoes
But I'm genuinely curious if this is a reliable test or not

Did not have my act together all day today. Only had 30 minutes to spend on the treadmill. I wanted to get to 3 miles but despite punching up the treadmill speed a few times, the pace and mileage on Garmin didn't change much. In contrast to the other day when Garmin gave me my fastest 5k time ever on the treadmill and I know that was not correct either. I don't know why it is all over the place. Anyway, a run completed. Tomorrow is a tight schedule as well, so it may be a rest day or just a very short run if I feel like I need to keep up my current streak.

@_nikkiwolf_ I've never heard of that drop test but will have to try it now with my new shoes compared to my old ones.

Do you people run when it snows? I find even walking a challenge, it feels so slippery under my feet...

Personally I use the treadmill when the roads are snow covered or icy. At my age I don’t want to risk falling and breaking something. I can take the cold into the mid 20’s unless it’s windy. So between these two, the treadmill and I spend a lot of time together. Yuck.
