It is currently -19C with a windchill of -29C. I brought 2 bags to work today: one filled with 'arctic running' clothes and one filled with gym clothes. Currently leaning strongly towards gym...
I can't even imagine... My coldest run ever was about 4C.
Today I missed my early morning running slot before my husband left for work and now it looks like I'll be running in very humid high 20s sometime around midday. Urg. Praying for a breeze.4 -
I have run in all kinds of temperatures ranging from -28C(-20F) when I lived in Minnesota(shout out to @7lenny7 , @MegaMooseEsq , and @MNLittleFinn ) all the way up to 39C(103F) since I've been back in Georgia (shout out to the deep south crew) and when I was on Okinawa(any former servicemembers here know what I mean) in all different levels of humidity. The motto says it all "Embrace the suck!", because whether you're acclimated to it, over or underdressed for it, no matter what you're going to get it done. It's kinda what we do. We may be competitive to a fault but will always support our fellow runners!
@sarahthes the descriptor "arctic running clothes"
@ContraryMaryMary hope a gentle tailwind heads your way.
Everyone have a runderful day!8 -
Is anyone in North America planning a lunar eclipse run Sunday night? In the central time zone it starts at 10:41 pm, reaches totality at 11:13 pm, and ends at 11:43 pm. It will also be a "Supermoon"
I'm torn. I'd like to run during the eclipse, but I'd also like to set up my camera on a tripod and get a nice time lapse. If I could run trails, I'd definitely do a lunar eclipse trail run, but that's still a couple of weeks out.

Aw man, I didn’t think I was going to want to run today but the sun is actually out and it’s about as warm as it’s likely to be for a couple of weeks but I can’t go because I just got off a conference call for work and have to leave in 20 minutes for an appointment I’ve already postponed once. And when I get home again the sun will be gone. Bummer.
Not much running this week, but I’m really enjoying the new gym. Class yesterday was great - I did my very first barbell squat! It felt much more balanced than squatting with dumbbells and I’m really excited to get some heavy weight going. I’m hoping to make it to my first yoga class this weekend, too. The yoga classes are meant as a supplement to the strength classes so I'm hoping it's not too intimidating.
@Butterchop: I’m in the “call animal control” camp. It sounds like their owners are easily identified - maybe this would be the wakeup call they need to keep their dogs from being hit by a car. Back when I lived in California there was a family across the highway from us that would let their dogs run loose and they’d chase me on my bike. One of them eventually did get hit and killed after I moved away.
@martaindale: Congratulations on maintenance! Living the dream!
@7lenny7: WOO! Just in time for the cold front to roll in…
@RunsOnEspresso: I say “ope” too. I totally never realized it was a thing until someone mentioned it.
@samthepanda: I keep my mileage elsewhere and copy it in here - this thread is definitely too fast-moving to be an easily accessible record! I don’t know what your training program is, but most runs don’t need to push you to the point where you can’t do anymore. If you’re a beginner to running slow is key!4 -
I just found some mid-summer motivation to run. I signed up for a trail marathon up north on July 13th. I'm banking on my wife not wanting to go sailing that weekend since we'll have been on the boat for most of Independence Day week. It was only $35 for registration so if I have to DNS for family reasons, so be it.
Looking at some photos from last years race made me do it. It looks like a real ankle buster.

I've updated our KeepRunningFatkids tribute thread.
Newbies, it'll give you some of the backstory about the MFP Monthly Running Challenge.

I am planning a time lapse if the sky is clear, but I live in Pittsburgh chances are not very good.

So it is snowing and sunset is in negative two minutes. Normally I could get a short run in and finish with the dark, but ugh, stupid drivers + snow + dark + already icy roads is a bit more danger than I want to risk. Will likely dreadmill it later.7

I did a test of my timelaspe setup with a snow "storm" recently. Learned quite a bit, but hope to do another test before the "big event."

martaindale wrote: »Well, I did it. I upped my calories to maintenance. I have gotten to my goal weight and am getting hungry, which I never was before. It's a little scary because I've been at a deficit for almost a year and I really don't want to gain weight back. But, it's time. I am moving into recomposition. The extra calories should make the workouts much easier! I'm going to add in some more strength training to target some areas that the rock climbing doesn't hit as well.
Ran 3 miles this evening in the mist. Got rained on for a few minutes, but luckily it was towards the end of my run.
Weight maintenance is a wonderful place to be, if a bit more challenging to manage than weight loss. It's not like parking a car in the garage and having the weight stay put; it's more like finding a spot in the middle of the ocean by GPS, and having to make constant adjustments for changing winds and currents to keep your boat in place.
But get it right, and you can look forward to having a weight history that looks like this:
@MobyCarp This is exactly what I needed to see this morning!!! The pattern you have is almost exactly what I've done the last couple of years, lost easily to start, stayed the same for about a year, good drop then maintenance for a couple of years. I'm currently at the point where I've stayed the same for about a year, and now I want to do that final drop before maintenance. I stepped on the scaled this morning and it wasn't what I wanted it to say, but I keep reminding myself this is a long term goal. I'm aiming to lose 10kg in 6 months. I already lost the first 2 of that in the first couple of weeks (gotta love that water weight drop). One week gain is not the end of the world. Especially since I just started weight training this week, that's doing all sorts of stuff. I need to let last year go.
No run this morning, I'm just getting over this what turned out to be a very mild cold, and I really wanted the sleep more than a run. I've got another lifting session at lunch, this is working really well for me. And I plan on a short 15 min run as well on the dreadmill - its at the gym, so easy to just jump on before I do my lifting session and can be my warm-up. I'm taking my tablet so hopefully that will help the boredom factor. Will see how long I last. Only want to do 2k so anything more than that will be a blessing.
Long run planned for tomorrow (Saturday), 10k. Looking forward to it.5 -

Wasn’t planning on running until tomorrow, but I was feeling myself after Zumba and spontaneously decided I was going to hop on the dreadmill and run my fastest mile ever! And I succeeded! Official time: 10:50! I know that’s slow for many of you on this thread, but I only started running in April 2018 and was averaging 14 minute miles so go me!
January miles:
1/1-1/15: traveling and exploring Europe!
1/16: 3.1 miles
1/17: 1 mile
Cumulative total: 4.1/30 miles14 -
@amirahdaboss To me, that's a great time. I'm only doing about 12:40 at my fastest right now. So, way to go! Also gives me hope that I can speed up!
I forget who posted the good things about the treadmill a couple of days ago, maybe @PastorVincent. I agreed with everything they said and usually don't mind doing runs/walks on mine. But, tonight, I discovered something to add to the BAD things about using the treadmill list. I accidentally hit the cord holding the dead man switch and the treadmill stopped at some unknown time and distance. Fortunately, I was only doing a walk, at a constant 3.7 mph, AND had my Garmin turned on to get a more accurate calorie burn than I get from the treadmill. So, instead of stopping at 2 miles, I just went until Garmin showed that I had walked for 35 minutes and then did the math to figure out the distance....2.15 miles, for anyone who is curious and doesn't wan to do the math. Nasty weather outside, etc led to the treadmill tonight. DOMS has set in from weights yesterday, I really don't prefer the treadmill, and my Garmin and the treadmill do not agree on pace or distance. I stopped twice to stretch my calves that hurt a LOT and finally just walked. Treadmill run showed 1.22 miles; Garmin 1.53. (Avg pace per Garmin was 12:12 which felt more accurate... so hard to run today). Pfft. Stretched and foam rolled so I can hopefully walk the stairs into work tomorrow.
Counting the treadmill distance today, I'm at just over 15 miles so far for January, which right on track for my goal of 30.8 -
2 miles of intervals on the dreadmill. Which means I did do all of my planned intervals, which is better than I did yesterday. And it is nice to know that in some version of reality I can still do 12 minute mile pace. Now to build my intervals back up.
Oh, and this was after heavy squats. Like very awesome for me heavy squats. Which probably means that furlough me is eating too much. But I seem to be fueling some pretty awesome workouts!10 -
5 miles on trails.
The Stanky Creek trail race last year had a t-shirt that said, "I survived Stanky Creek." Well, I can now say I have survived Stanky Creek - literally - I mean I was in the creek. There are several spots where you have to cross it, and one has a ford made of a narrow patchwork of logs that I put a foot off of last time, so this time I decided rather than mess about with the bridge I would just wade through the ankle deep muddy creek next to it. It turns out there's an arched log hidden down there in the mud, I caught my foot in it, and there you go - full length sideflop into the creek. At least the weather was somewhat warm today, about 50.
Apart from taking a dip in the creek, the gps quit on us, and we got hopelessly lost. Turned out that the way we were supposed to go was not any one of the five clearly delineated paths that meet at the point where we got lost - instead the correct choice was to plunge over a steep drop and cross the creek yet again, at a point where it's about calf deep rushing water. For some reason it hadn't occurred to us to go that way!
Just a hapless day. But other than that, not a bad run. Everything was slick as heck, since it had only stopped raining about an hour earlier, but apart from falling in the creek, no one slipped or twisted anything. And my legs which were very sore after doing five miles of constant hopping up and down and over roots the first time we ran this route feel stronger now. Still not any faster, though.
I have yet to see another living soul beside me and my husband out there! It's very lonely compared to our usual trails which are full of runners. That's not a bad thing! Although if there were more runners we could probably ask some of them where the blankety-blank TRAIL was! Even so, being alone in the woods on a misty day was rather pretty.16 -

I have a Garmin foot pod that I carefully calibrated now when I run on the dreadmill I ignore what the dreadmill says and use the stats from the foot pod. I am sure it is not perfect, but it is closer than my really cheap somewhat rickety dreadmill that is for sure, and if (when) I hit the deadman key on the dreadmill I do not lose any information. I just restart the dreadmill and carry on.7 -

I started doing my physio exercises for my ankle again and one unanticipated consequence was very tight calves today (though it should have been anticipated because all my physio is various calf raise variants).
The sounds I made while foam rolling kind of disturbed my husband, ha. Hurt so good...
Today's run was at the Rec centre. I bought a 5x drop in multipass and they gave me today for free. Awesome.

Two things... 1, you started weight training, that almost always results in some water weight gain. 2. hormones? I used to get really upset about the scale going up until I started tracking it and my cycle and discovered the scales show exactly when I ovulate. Light bulb moment! 3. You've had a cold, I'm pretty sure that has led to temporary increases too that dropped off later.
In other news, I've been given permission to very very slowly start running again. I've decided to do as I'm told and take the easing back into it really gently thing seriously, so have restarted C25k. Did week 2 day 1 yesterday, it felt SO GOOD to be outside 'running' again but I got a bunch of funny looks cause when I wasn't singing along with my music at the top of my voice I was swearing at that annoying woman every time she drawled 'start walking'. So dang annoying, I just wanna ruuuuuun lol.
So now I have a goal for the rest of the month, which is to follow the programme again without cheating (so tempting to skip days/weeks/just run) only if and when my legs are pain-free and to stretch every single day.
I pulled out of the HM I had signed up for in March, which was very upsetting but for the best. I wanted that bling so badly.

@ddmom0811 I found a Strava track for someone running 100 MILES on a cruise ship. It wasn't as interesting as I thought, since the ship was moving fast enough that you can't see the ovals. You say it's a Wind Surfer trip...as in the big sailboat?!?! Now I'm jealous!
I can't even fathom 100 miles of loops!
I've only taken one other cruise which was Royal Caribbean and it left from Barcelona. I think one of your kids was there at the same time as I recall...? Yes it is a big sailboat. But it has an engine too! Very curious how this will be!
@martaindale - I enjoyed the treadmill on the ship I was on but it was on the Mediterranean so you could pretty much always see land in the distance and it was such a cool view.
@shanaber - I wasn't into lifting so much on my last cruise, but now I'm addicted to it, so I will have to give the lifting a try and will report what happens.
On this morning's run, my Aftershockz headphones suddenly stopped working. They wouldn't connect to the bluetooth. What the heck!? I turned them off, back on, turned on and off bluetooth and wouldn't connect. I really, really, really want these on my cruise and I leave at 4am tomorrow. Too late for Amazon order. I may have to go to a real store tonight and get some new ones. I think they are about 3 years old.

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen.
Scheduled rest day today. Might get some unscheduled rest days this weekend - our impending snowstorm is supposed to be the worst in about a decade.
@Scott6255 Good luck at your marathon Sunday. You've done your training; let that carry you through the race.

Had enough clear sidewalk today to make it a fartlek run - fast on clear areas, slow on icy spots. On one smaller, less-traveled road I considered switching over to the road because of ice, but decided against it because I was worried about cars coming up behind me. Less than a minute later, a car came from behind me and crossed paths with a second car going the other direction. I heard something when they passed, just ahead of me, then they both stopped. Their mirrors had hit each other. Weird. I guess it was good that I wasn't out there in the road too! Since I hadn't actually seen anything, I was of no help and didn't stick around.
Made it the whole way home, only to slip and fall right in front of my own house Ouch. But I'm ok!

Supplement question. I recently decided to start using electrolytes on the advice of several people, including my trainer. I got a couple tubes of the Nuun to try.
One is the Energy Blackberry Citrus, the other, Watermelon Electrolyte. The blackberry one isn't too bad. I've had 2, 1 as a drink, the other on my run yesterday. The OTHER one.....holy taste buds, I apologize! Now, I realize that the Watermelon one should be the one I need as that is the "electrolyte" one, but is there ANY way to make it actually palatable? My thing i guess is I don't like carbonated water, and that's what it tasted like. I just can't imagine doing a long run with that in my bottle.1
