@ddmom0811 are you going on one of those cruise ships with a track on the upper level? If so I want to see the run on Strava to see the ovals shifting as the ship steams ahead.
But I will give it a try!
I wasn't a huge fan of outdoor running on a cruise ship either. It was hard to get into a pace with the winding narrow hallways at either end and people meandering around the open sides. I also don't really run on a track, so I'm not used to having to do so many loops. I will probably opt for a treadmill with a nice view next time I'm on a ship.1 -

It's a little scary because I've been at a deficit for almost a year and I really don't want to gain weight back. But, it's time. I am moving into recomposition. The extra calories should make the workouts much easier! I'm going to add in some more strength training to target some areas that the rock climbing doesn't hit as well.
Weight maintenance is a wonderful place to be, if a bit more challenging to manage than weight loss. It's not like parking a car in the garage and having the weight stay put; it's more like finding a spot in the middle of the ocean by GPS, and having to make constant adjustments for changing winds and currents to keep your boat in place.
But get it right, and you can look forward to having a weight history that looks like this:
That's a great way to put it! 7 years! Good job. I plan to be in that position 7 years from now!5 -
January goal: 75 miles
1/1: 3.11 miles
1/4: 4.6 miles
1/5: 4.21 miles
1/6: 8.02 miles
1/8: 3.11 miles
1/9: 3.15 miles
1/10: 3.15 miles
1/13: 9.01 miles
1/15: 3.15 miles
1/16: 3.11 miles
1/17: 5.03 miles
44.62/75 miles completed
I got up early to run this morning and it was glorious! It was 50F feels like 46F and clear. The stars were so bright and beautiful. I think it was actually Venus and Jupiter that were so bright, but the stars were bright too. I wore capris and a t-shirt with sleeves and was perfectly comfortable. I'm really glad I got some sleeves for Christmas. I debated whether I would get up early and run, or run at lunchtime again. In some ways I really like running at lunch. But I also feel really rushed and usually feel like I have to cut my runs short. I still find it hard to believe that I get annoyed when I only have time to run 3 miles when I used to not be able to run half a block, but 3 miles just doesn't seem to be enough most of the time. And then I am usually late getting back to work and I can eat lunch at my desk, but I don't really like to. So I thought since it wasn't supposed to be too cold this morning I would run then. I am so glad I did. It has actually started clouding up and isn't as nice now as it was this morning. It is supposed to be nice at lunch, but I am glad I already ran because I thought it was supposed to be nice now and I would not have been happy if I decided to run at lunchtime so I could run in the sun and then it ended up being cloudy. It was just one of those runs where I felt great the whole time. I felt like I could run forever. I did some yoga when I got home and that was good too. When I run at lunch I don't really stretch afterward like I should. I still feel really good after my run this morning. For me that is the runner's high. I felt great during the run and wanted to keep running and then after the run I still feel great and keep thinking about how wonderful the run was.
@butterchop I would call animal control if the dogs are a problem. The animal shelter here is a no kill shelter so there isn't really a fear for me that the dog would be euthanized. But I would still call them if the owners won't do anything about it. Where I live you aren't allowed to just let your dogs run loose and even if they didn't pick up the dogs they would probably fine the owners.
@martaindale Congrats on reaching maintenance!
@scott6255 Good luck this weekend!

@ddmom0811 - this is basically what I was going to post too. I hated running out on deck when we went to Panama but it was a big ship so maybe you won't have the same 'people meandering' issue. I did run on the treadmill in the ship's gym and the view was awesome. Getting used to the swaying of the ship while on the treadmill took a bit though. It also made lifting weights ummm interesting. You get a really great core workout trying to stabilize yourself especially for things like chest presses or weighted v-ups...6 -
@butterchop can carry a small can of pepper spray and when they start to leave their yard just a spritz in the nose will deter them from following you. Otherwise as many have said, contact animal control.
@martaindale CONGRATS!
@Scott6255 Good luck brother!
@kgirlhart Sounds like wonderful weather this morning!
17 days on the run this morning, 82 miles into Run the Year challenge, GO team Runderful World!7 -
It is currently -19C with a windchill of -29C. I brought 2 bags to work today: one filled with 'arctic running' clothes and one filled with gym clothes. Currently leaning strongly towards gym...8
-
@sarahthes when it gets that cold I tend to run small loops near my house so I can bail out if I need to. If you're dropped off several km from your house, there's no bailing out. I'm glad you brought gym clothes! And I'm glad you're out of your funk.
@ddmom0811 I found a Strava track for someone running 100 MILES on a cruise ship. It wasn't as interesting as I thought, since the ship was moving fast enough that you can't see the ovals. You say it's a Wind Surfer trip...as in the big sailboat?!?! Now I'm jealous!
@Butterchop I've had dogs follow me many times. One followed me for an entire run and even came into my garage. I used to try to get them to stay put but now I only do that if the owner is there to help out. If not, I enjoy the company. They'll find there way back.
@martaindale congrats for hitting maintenance!! I dream of that some day...I've come close, but not close enough.

Brrrrr! Its like 7-8C here and I'm freezing all day! I'm definitely going to the gym where itll surely be too warm, 26-27C3 -
@Elise4270 I like 7-8C as long as there's no wind. Or lightning.
@7lenny7 I don't get in funks often but I hate it when I do. Bleh. Glad it's over. I'm only supposed to run 2-4km today so if there was no wind I was going to get dropped off 3km from home. But there's wind and it's nasty.3 -

I can't even imagine... My coldest run ever was about 4C.
Today I missed my early morning running slot before my husband left for work and now it looks like I'll be running in very humid high 20s sometime around midday. Urg. Praying for a breeze.4 -
I have run in all kinds of temperatures ranging from -28C(-20F) when I lived in Minnesota(shout out to @7lenny7 , @MegaMooseEsq , and @MNLittleFinn ) all the way up to 39C(103F) since I've been back in Georgia (shout out to the deep south crew) and when I was on Okinawa(any former servicemembers here know what I mean) in all different levels of humidity. The motto says it all "Embrace the suck!", because whether you're acclimated to it, over or underdressed for it, no matter what you're going to get it done. It's kinda what we do. We may be competitive to a fault but will always support our fellow runners!
@sarahthes the descriptor "arctic running clothes"
@ContraryMaryMary hope a gentle tailwind heads your way.
Everyone have a runderful day!8 -
Is anyone in North America planning a lunar eclipse run Sunday night? In the central time zone it starts at 10:41 pm, reaches totality at 11:13 pm, and ends at 11:43 pm. It will also be a "Supermoon"
I'm torn. I'd like to run during the eclipse, but I'd also like to set up my camera on a tripod and get a nice time lapse. If I could run trails, I'd definitely do a lunar eclipse trail run, but that's still a couple of weeks out.

Aw man, I didn’t think I was going to want to run today but the sun is actually out and it’s about as warm as it’s likely to be for a couple of weeks but I can’t go because I just got off a conference call for work and have to leave in 20 minutes for an appointment I’ve already postponed once. And when I get home again the sun will be gone. Bummer.
Not much running this week, but I’m really enjoying the new gym. Class yesterday was great - I did my very first barbell squat! It felt much more balanced than squatting with dumbbells and I’m really excited to get some heavy weight going. I’m hoping to make it to my first yoga class this weekend, too. The yoga classes are meant as a supplement to the strength classes so I'm hoping it's not too intimidating.
@Butterchop: I’m in the “call animal control” camp. It sounds like their owners are easily identified - maybe this would be the wakeup call they need to keep their dogs from being hit by a car. Back when I lived in California there was a family across the highway from us that would let their dogs run loose and they’d chase me on my bike. One of them eventually did get hit and killed after I moved away.
@martaindale: Congratulations on maintenance! Living the dream!
@7lenny7: WOO! Just in time for the cold front to roll in…
@RunsOnEspresso: I say “ope” too. I totally never realized it was a thing until someone mentioned it.
@samthepanda: I keep my mileage elsewhere and copy it in here - this thread is definitely too fast-moving to be an easily accessible record! I don’t know what your training program is, but most runs don’t need to push you to the point where you can’t do anymore. If you’re a beginner to running slow is key!4 -
I just found some mid-summer motivation to run. I signed up for a trail marathon up north on July 13th. I'm banking on my wife not wanting to go sailing that weekend since we'll have been on the boat for most of Independence Day week. It was only $35 for registration so if I have to DNS for family reasons, so be it.
Looking at some photos from last years race made me do it. It looks like a real ankle buster.

I am planning a time lapse if the sky is clear, but I live in Pittsburgh chances are not very good.

So it is snowing and sunset is in negative two minutes. Normally I could get a short run in and finish with the dark, but ugh, stupid drivers + snow + dark + already icy roads is a bit more danger than I want to risk. Will likely dreadmill it later.7

I did a test of my timelaspe setup with a snow "storm" recently. Learned quite a bit, but hope to do another test before the "big event."

Ran 3 miles this evening in the mist. Got rained on for a few minutes, but luckily it was towards the end of my run.

@MobyCarp This is exactly what I needed to see this morning!!! The pattern you have is almost exactly what I've done the last couple of years, lost easily to start, stayed the same for about a year, good drop then maintenance for a couple of years. I'm currently at the point where I've stayed the same for about a year, and now I want to do that final drop before maintenance. I stepped on the scaled this morning and it wasn't what I wanted it to say, but I keep reminding myself this is a long term goal. I'm aiming to lose 10kg in 6 months. I already lost the first 2 of that in the first couple of weeks (gotta love that water weight drop). One week gain is not the end of the world. Especially since I just started weight training this week, that's doing all sorts of stuff. I need to let last year go.
No run this morning, I'm just getting over this what turned out to be a very mild cold, and I really wanted the sleep more than a run. I've got another lifting session at lunch, this is working really well for me. And I plan on a short 15 min run as well on the dreadmill - its at the gym, so easy to just jump on before I do my lifting session and can be my warm-up. I'm taking my tablet so hopefully that will help the boredom factor. Will see how long I last. Only want to do 2k so anything more than that will be a blessing.
Long run planned for tomorrow (Saturday), 10k. Looking forward to it.5
