Not kidding, would not lie. Yes, I ran 27.11 miles in my basement. I call it crazy laps, when I just do not want to go outside. It took me 4:45:03 (time). I do not really do anything. I listen to my music and travel through my mind (making sure not to hit furniture along the way). The stairwell comes down the center of the basement, so I can essentially just 'lap' round and round (maybe about 25 steps?)

Can you explain "crazy laps in the basement"? How far is a lap? I'm also trying to comprehend what you did for 27.11 miles today!

You can only edit for 1 hour.
Sometimes on mobile it doesn't matter how many times you try to select the edit button. It only will select the report button. Had to switch to my PC yesterday to fix a broken quote.2 -

This thread is awesome @AlphaHowls A friend of mine once lapped a half marathon in his living room. And I thought he was crazy...
It was cold today. Not anywhere near as cold as where @7lenny7 is but still cold enough that I saw a big burly guy in a parka wince as he came out the door. Slightly underdressed but I was doing a pace run so it didn't feel very cold. The only part of me that got really uncomfortable was my fingers. I guess my gloves aren't cutting it anymore and I need some mitts.
3km warm up plus 5km at HM pace. The HM pace felt surprisingly easy (which means I should probably aim higher?), but I haven't been running at any fixed pace for so long it was hard picking a speed and sticking to it.

Sally push-up challenge, attempt #2: made it to 2:10, up from 1:18 last attempt! I feel good about my attempt because some of those young kids in the video dropped out before I did! However I feel downright shaky, that's hard! Will make attempt #3 on next arms day, which will be in February thread.9

Mental discipline, yes, absolutely outstanding. But what I’m really impressed with is her inner ear - I’d get so dizzy. I doubt I could manage more than ten before I’d start feeling queasy.6 -

We've got a warming trend! Kind of. Tonight's run was 5.5 miles in -18F/-28C with a wind chill of -46F/-43C. I made some modifications to my layers but still sweat like crazy. Mentally it's just hard to dress down in temps and wind like this without a bunch of experience to draw on.
I went to a roomier, but less wind resistant shoe. It was more comfortable and still in the range of acceptable.
I ditched the snow pants (never again) and went with my Brooks run pants over my Smartwool PhD tights. This was MUCH better, but still warmer than I needed. I need to invest in a light wind layer. That over my Smartwool tights might have been better.
I ditched the parka shell and used my normal running wind shell. Still too much. The wind shell was great but I think another mid layer should have replaced my fleece jacket.
I got rid of my stocking cap and used a Nathan run beanie. Still too much. I kept the neoprene face mask and tried my ski goggles again. With the neoprene mask I could fish lip on my exhale and better control the heat of my breath to avoid the goggles. The goggles worked great for two miles, with only one side fogging up, but on the return the other side fogged up. By this time I had enough heat coming off me that I didn't need the goggles.
My best improvement came with my hands. I ditched the chopper mitt and went with my mid weight running gloves with my Turtle Fur golf mitts and chemical hand warmers. This combination was awesome. My hands never were cold. After two miles my hands were getting too hot so I putt the hand warmers in my pocket. That wasn't enough and I had to peel back my golf mitts to air out my hands. The ability to regulate temperature like this is key.
Poor Kody. he was so excited to go running with me after missing out on yesterday. Such a look of hurt and betrayal when I left without him.
Tomorrow I have a choice...get up and run before work for one last dance with this arctic weather, or wait until after work when it's near zero. I want to run in the morning but I know the chance of actually getting up early enough is slim. If I run after work Kody can come with me.Duct tape wind barrier

It can’t always be that easy though I guess, I just need to remember why I’m doing this and try to ride it out. Fortunately the lack of enthusiasm comes with a cutback week, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s obviously a sign that I mentally need the cutback too, although last week I didn’t feel as though physically I was due one.
Anyway, I dragged my reluctant, grumpy butt to my running club last night, dropped down a group and ran with different people for different parts of the run having a chat. I enjoyed the catch up, if not the run, as I haven’t run with that group for a couple of months.

Now, I have on a couple of occasions run (as much as you can call it a run while dodging furniture and two basset hounds) around my downstairs for a mile or so just to get in some exercise when the weather is bad, but i can’t imagine 27 miles! Wow.

I had to cut my run a bit short this morning as for some reason my breathing was all over the place - hoping I'm not coming down with a cold!
The half my friend has in mind is not until the first weekend in October, so a realistic target. I'll probably do it, just to give myself a challenge. Plus there is a charity element to it which might push me a bit more (usually does!).10 -

I took my rest day and I certainly appreciated not running at -20 F wind chills and not even going out one more time in it at all. The dog went to day care today so it also saved me a walk. I got a lot done on my work project, thank goodness, after a rather sleepless night thinking about it - including writing out a few paragraphs at about 4 am (and they turned out to be not bad ones either, even in the light of day).
No strength training or pull-up practice today either, but a little yoga. Just one day left of that 30-day challenge.
Stay warm and safe everyone in the polar vortex. And stay cool and safe those of you down under in the heat. Maybe we could meet in the middle somewhere?
LOL - crazy town here! Come to Florida everyone! It was 45F this morning on my run and the high will be around 60 today. Very cold for us but no one I know is complaining knowing we have 7-8 months of unbearable heat ahead of us.
@7lenny7 - WOW - all those clothes... and you were actually hot and sweaty! Did you pass any other crazy runners? Reminds me of when I ran when a hurricane was headed our way in 2017 and it was eerily quite on the streets. I'm glad Kody was home and warm even though he wasn't happy about it! Can't believe your icy face. OMG - I can't even imagine.

I ran 4 miles yesterday, specifically to meet my goal. My plan called for a shorter run, but I missed a couple of runs with this cold and I really didn't want to end up short! So, I explored a new area of my neighborhood and found a nice new 4 mile loop. I'll definitely use it again. It's nice to change the scenery up from time to time.
The run felt good, but my pace turned out to be crazy slow. Guess I'm still recovering a little. I have my first trail race this Saturday, a 5k, so I'm hoping the last of this congestion will work itself out before then. Not expecting my time to be all that great. I don't even know what to set as a goal since I have never done a trail race before. So just going to see where it lands, and have a good time! There is a 50k, 20 mile, and 10 mile going the same day and the longer 2 races start earlier so start time for me is 9:00, and I am soooo grateful for that. I am definitely more of an afternoon and evening runner. I view morning start times as something I have to deal with to do races and dread the early wake-up call every single time.

@AlphaHowls: I definitely didn't think you were lying, but it's hard for me to imagine running 2.7 miles in laps in my basement, let alone 27! Very impressive!Mentally it's just hard to dress down in temps and wind like this without a bunch of experience to draw on.
This is really the biggest reason I haven't been out to run the last couple of days. It's taken a lot of time and energy (and money) to figure out what clothes to wear this winter, and while it's amazing when I have a run like the race on Saturday where my clothes are just about perfect, all those too hot or too cold runs are tough. Yes, hot and humid runs are difficult too, but in that case there's nothing one can do really but suck it up, stay hydrated, and power through. Spending the time planning a cold-weather outfit, then putting it all on (good luck if realize you need to pee before going out!), then maybe going back inside to take something off or put something on, only to realize a couple miles in that you misjudged _whatever_ is a lot harder for me to deal with, even knowing that I'm building data points that will make it easier the next time I go out.
When I started running it was important to me to keep my goals so easy that I couldn't come up with excuses not to do it. So I'd run for 10 minutes at a time, basically in the same clothes I'd wear around the house, and it built up from there. A lot of things have changed, but I still like to be efficient with my time, and I haven't reached that point of peace yet with how much extra time and energy running in this kind of weather takes. Right now I feel reasonably confident in my ability to dress for a run in weather down to about 0, but more than that I want to ease into, which makes those short runs I've been doing home from the gym great. It's not "wasted" time because I have to get home somehow, and it's not far enough to be that miserable even if my clothes aren't quite right. Maybe this afternoon I'll try for another weather PR: -2. Fingers crossed for snow!8 -
@martaindale I find my trail times are 50-100% longer than my normal times for the same distance. I'm a back of the pack runner, for some perspective.3

Finished the month with 2 miles today. I am still fighting a stupid cough, which kept me up late last night. I did not want to drag my butt out of bed, but I did and am proud of myself for doing so.
I heard a saying (was it here?) that the first mile is a lie. I'm starting to understand that! I have my Garmin set to half mile laps and that first half mile was brutal. Then I realized I was going faster than I thought, so I slowed down for the next half. The third and fourth though, were great. I even pushed myself to increase pace here and there since it was a "short run" and ended up with negative splits. (6:38, 6:45, 6:28, 5:49) I'm really pleased with that.
My total for the month of January is 23.05 miles ran, 21.67 miles walked. As for my goals...
1) Lower body fat - nope
2) Lower weight - maybe?
3) Run 3x per week - no, but only because I was sick
4) Strength train 2x per week (starting w/1x) - nope (only once all month, oops)
5) Walk 3-4x per week - almost
6) Bike/cross train 1-2x per week - yes, because I count walking for now
7) Mobility exercises 3x+ per week - nope
8) Not to pressure myself! I've found the joy of running again, I don't want to spoil it by getting all "OMG, I HAVE to run for this goal I'm setting!" or I HAVE to train for this race! (stolen from @dreamer12151) - YES!
I definitely have room for improvement. HA!9 -
Set a goal for myself of 50 miles per month. Finished January with 85 miles! Have worked up to 7 miles on my long Sunday runs and signed up for my first half marathon later in the year. Slow but steady progress.14

@martaindale if this is your first trail race, don't pay attention to your pace. Just watch your footing, take it easy, and enjoy the fun. You will be significantly slower on trail than on pavement.
@MegaMooseEsq you make great points about the time overhead of cold weather running. I think I spent as much time dressing, fidgeting, and reconfiguring for that first run as I did actually running. For me it was worth it, but I can see how it's a deterrent. And my second arctic run...yeah, I had to pee as soon as I was ready to go outside. I just ignored it and ran.
@ddmom0811 not unsurprisingly, I was the only one I saw running, and I didn't see any other tracks either.
No bitter cold run for me this morning so I guess I'll take Kody out this evening the balmy 0F weather.

Honestly, that is one of the biggest reasons (behind Raynaud's of course) I end up on the dreadmill. If I have an hour or so to run and have to spend a big chunk of that dress/undressing it kills the run.4 -
Today was a trip to the woods with my nordic poles, and my little buddy with his sled. We found a lot of nice hills so part of my time was running up and then pulling him partway down. At one point we were off trail and he asked me, "Mama, what kind of dangerous animals are active in the woods during winter?" I said probably none in these woods other than maybe a dog. He was worried about wolves, but I think the only actual concern might be surprising a wild boar (I did not mention this). Just then we reached the path and saw a man cross-country skiing towards us. As he passed us, he joked, "I heard there are skiers in these woods, but I'm not sure that's true." Ha ha It wa certainly a good day for the skiers.
Here's my question. Later I took buddy home and went back out by myself so I could actually run a bit. Both workouts were measured by the same watch. The first workout was significantly slower and I stopped to pause the watch numerous times when I was standing there waiting for him to sled down a hill or catch up. But moving time was the same for both: 35 minutes each, covering 2k and almost 4k. Yet the calorie burn came out as HIGHER for the slower workout (440 to 330). Why is this?
Either way, I substituted the 70 minutes of "other" for my scheduled 11k training run, and I enjoyed myself. I even forgot that I hate winter and snow10 -
I have a lot of respect for @7lenny7 but OMG I could not do that.
I wouldn't be running around my basement like @AlphaHowls since we don't have basements but I would be running on a treadmill as much as I hate it, and watching a movie or something!
Like @ddmom0811 I will invite you all to come to So California. It has been as high as 80 this week with the lows in the high 40's. We are about to get dumped on with a lot more rain so maybe hold off a week if you don't like rain running!
ETA - pool heater is now working and pool is hopefully warm today. I will be holding water running tryouts if anyone wants to join me 😊14
