Hit my goal and my stretch goal and even then some. After my run home I will be at 134.5 miles for the month, not going to lie I will probably do some laps around the block to hit 135 miles.
@PastorVincent loving all the movie references but it makes me feel like a bit of a nerd since I not only recognize them but can usually remember the movie they are from.3 -

My newest book is a portal fantasy where the main characters are a group of gamers so it is full of such random quotes.

@PastorVincent where can I find said book?
I can not link to my books here, as that understandably would be flagged by the mods as self-promotion. I can Private Message you though, so I did. Check there.1 -
This thread is cracking me up!! A bunch of nuts up in here!
Hats off to your amazing grit , @7lenny7 , @AlphaHowls and @kgirlhart (hey, it takes a lot of determination to get out there at lunchtime, right?)!
As for me, this evening I will be going all @7lenny7 and braving the frozen tundra (16F) and, due to ice still on the roads, will probably have to channel my inner @AlphaHowls and do some "crazy laps" (one mile loops around the downtown area counts, right?). Yeah, my (non-running) friends think I'm insane.11 -
@AlphaHowls wow. Just wow. I bow down.
And all you crazy northerners who are out running in your crazy weather! It's sweltering here but it's cool enough in the early morning so I don't really have any excuse...
Except its so hot at night I'm not sleeping very well and keep turning off my alarm in the middle of the night because that extra hr sleep seems more important than a run. I'm going to stop doing that because I ALWAYS regret not running - and a wise person said you never regret the run you do, only the ones you don't.
So with that theme I grudgingly went out this morning. Mostly because I was only dozing anyway. I thought I'd only do 3k, but at the 1.5k mark it turned into 4k, that turned into 5 cause I was feeling gook. They were slow, much slower than usual but I did it.
So a good start to Feb.9 -
My pool running tryouts were an epic fail! The pool heater has been on for 2 days and the pool is not heated... barely even feels less cold. 😣
I will go for my 1 mile walk with Hobbes the Vizsla before it starts raining though. That will bring my January total to about 27 miles.
@lporter229 - We are all nuts! I mean who runs in -50 weather or runs laps in the basement for more than a marathon or heats their pool in January for water running?
Onto the February thread!9 -
And 6.1 miles this morning brings me just past my stretch goal of 150 miles for the month *happy dance*. Another 23F/-5C run this morning. Nowhere near as cool as @7lenny7 -27F air temp but cool for us here in GA. Temperature regulation is not really an issue for me as I sweat no matter what I wear, my objective is not to freeze, so 50F and above is tshirt and shorts, 40-50F is long sleeve shirt and shorts, 30-40F add a base layer top and bottom, 20-30F add a midlayer top and bottom and wool socks(all plans subject to modification depending on wind/rain). Haven't run in colder than 20 degree weather since I moved back to GA 11 years ago, so no plan at this time for colder than that.
@AlphaHowls /bow
@7lenny7 Rock it out brother, awesome subzero runs.
@shanaber So sorry your pool heater not working.
@PastorVincent I am assuming same author name, will have to look it up when I have time this weekend.
@Avidkeo quality is good, but just getting out there is awesome!
@Mari33a Your shoulder must be feeling better, physio must have come up with some killer stuff for you!
@martaindale good luck on your trail run!
@ddmom0811 ooohhhh 40's, I am so there, LOL!
@MobyCarp Good luck at nationals sir!
@polskagirl01 That forest looks totally awesome!3 -
@workaholic_nurse I was with physio this morning. While what felt like was unscrewing my head he asked what exercise I do & I said run, but not much recently. He said to keep running as it should help keep my neck & shoulders loose & what’s caused me pain is sitting continually in one position. Turns & he’s a runner too & does marathon in Prague every year! I almost laughed out loud as I know from this groups experience with running & non running physios.7

Nominal January mileage goal: 200 miles
Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Work the January races into the training plan smoothly. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage or races.
Today's notes – Today's warming trend is brought to you by Delta Airlines.
Got up this morning (middle of the night, actually) and saw my porch thermometer read -0.8º F (-18.2º C). There was wind. It was a strong enough wind that I was getting lake effect snow from Lake Erie; usually that doesn't get as far as my driveway. On the plus side, it's pretty thinned out by the time it gets to me, so there isn't a whole lot of it.
The snow made audible crunching sounds under my tires as I drove to the airport. I had layered adequately for perhaps mid-teens F if I didn't stay too long. Got into the airport terminal. Baggage counter doesn't open till 4, I need to check a bag. Restructured layers to be livable for inside, stashed some in my carry on.
Got on the plane for takeoff at 6. Window seat. It was cold, even with 2 long sleeve tech shirts and a substantial rain/wind shell. Got warmer after we took off. 28º F (-2º C) in Atlanta had the airport employees commenting about the cold, felt pretty good to me. Got to Tallahasse, and it must be cold; everyone was wearing jackets. I did not feel a need to put gloves on. Walked around and got lunch while waiting for the hotel room to be ready. When it was, I checked in, set up my base, and threw on shorts, a short sleeve tech shirt, and ankle length socks inside Kinvaras that have no decent traction on snow. Went out exploring, and found that Tallahassee puts a lot of work into its parks. Ran past some small parks, around a newish Cascade Park, though the FSU campus, and stumbled across a pond with a nice path around it when I thought I'd just finish up on boring city streets.
It was heavenly. Garmin said it was 57º F (14º C). I don't take pictures when running, but I did run past the places I took pictures earlier while walking:
It is worth *every penny* of what I'm spending to be here a day earlier than the rest of the team.
January goal review. Went past the nominal goal, which had been set conservatively compared to the marathon training plan. Sure enough, Life Happened and I didn't run as many miles as the plan called for; but I'm healthy, and that's a lot more important. On the real goals, Boston training is going reasonably well. I've avoided overtraining, and taking time for the January races has actually helped with that. I have cut back on the originally planned mileage to accomplish this, but I've been able to keep all the originally planned races. I'm pretty happy with the month.
On to February!

That looks beautiful! I can always tell it's cold when I visit family on the west coast in the winter and am the only one not wearing a coat. Usually I just wear two sweaters and a shawl that doubles as a blanket getting to and from the airport but I guess now I have some better lightweight layers than I did before I started running.1 -
W3D2 of C25K done. Last night after talking myself out of going for a run outside right after work, I started to feel guilty later in the evening. So since I don't like running outside in the dark I made my way to the gym after my yoga class and ran on the treadmill. It definitely wasn't as fun to run on the treadmill as it is to run outside, but I did it. That was a great way to end my first month back at running.

I, for one, am happy. For winter (and freezing temps) I have accomplished something.
Thank you all for the stimulus you gave me :flowerforyou: . Seeing your posts I also really want to register (if possible the kids as well) for some races in our city. I am sure they have plenty (my first was last year, about 7k)! Not to mention how supportive those of you who I befriended have turned to be! So again, thank YOU :flowerforyou:

End of January already? Time flies when you're getting old!
A little over 7 miles this morning of easy-paced running...2 miles solo, and then 5 with the group. That's the last time I'll be running with the group for a little while, as next week the mileage is either too little to run with them, or contains miles that need to be done at marathon pace, and then after the race, who knows what recovery time I'll have. I guess that's my goal for tonight now...plan what my post-race recovery running will be.

I did 3.5 easy miles on the treadmill today to round out the month with 55 total miles, 10 miles above my goal! I also realized that, this month's running total is nearly 25% of my mileage for the entire YEAR in 2018! I can't believe how far I've come.9

martaindale wrote: »The run felt good, but my pace turned out to be crazy slow. Guess I'm still recovering a little. I have my first trail race this Saturday, a 5k, so I'm hoping the last of this congestion will work itself out before then. Not expecting my time to be all that great. I don't even know what to set as a goal since I have never done a trail race before. So just going to see where it lands, and have a good time! There is a 50k, 20 mile, and 10 mile going the same day and the longer 2 races start earlier so start time for me is 9:00, and I am soooo grateful for that. I am definitely more of an afternoon and evening runner. I view morning start times as something I have to deal with to do races and dread the early wake-up call every single time.
Good luck with your trail race. I hope you enjoy it! I've only run one trail race. It was my very first race ever - a 10K, in the mountains, 10 years ago. I had not properly trained, nor was I prepared for the mountainous terrain. There was lots and lots of walking going on, but, overall, I enjoyed it. I'm sure you are much better prepared and will do great. As others have said, just relax and enjoy. And, I totally agree with you on the start time. I much prefer evening/afternoon runs and dread getting up early for a race.
@AlphaHowls I can't imagine running a marathon around and around in my basement, and I have a fairly large basement. I think investing in a treadmill just might be worth it. You certainly have more mental fortitude than I do.
@greyparks206 Yeah! You're doing great! Keep up the good work!
You all are doing great and keep inspiring me to be consistent and, hopefully, improve slowly over time.
I got home later than I intended tonight and hadn't eaten much all day, so opted for a walk instead of a run that would have made me meet my goal. Instead, I'm 2.63 miles short. Still, I'm happy with my consistency this month. Now, to keep it up.

One last treadmill run to finish up January. Came oh so close to my rather ambitious and arbitrary goal. I really needed the rest day yesterday time-wise and body-wise though. My left knee is feeling a little tender for some reason so am keeping tabs on that. It was ok during the run today but it's not quite normal.
Pull-up challenge work for today was lat pull-downs, dead hangs, and a couple of jump ups to negative pull-ups. I improvised this a little from the printed workout for the day because, well I didn't like what it said to do given the equipment available to me.
I also finished up 30 days of yoga today, the Yoga with Adriene Dedicate series. I liked doing it but will be kind of glad to have one less challenge to keep up with. I think it's really beneficial to me and liked the 20-30 minute length of most of them so I should really try to do it a few times a week at least.
Nice job this month everyone. On to February!

5.2 miles on the treadmill. Final 39.8 miles of a 40 mile goal. I've really been slacking, so need to do better in Feb. I started back to running Jan. 19 after a break to focus on losing fat quickly. I've already regained the fat I lost plus some and I've already not run as much as planned. To be honest, the 40 mile goal was already a low number and I still failed to achieve even that.

Don't think of it as a failure. You were sooooooo close to the 40 mile goal. Who cares if it was a "low number" or not. You did 39.8 miles more than the person who sat on the couch all month!!! That is such a positive. If you continue to consistently run, I think that fat you regained will disappear. It may take longer than a fad diet/plan, but it will be more lasting. Don't give up and don't beat yourself up. You've got this.
