    Hello, all...

Am just finishing up the last packing bits, off to the staff retreat in a couple hours, back tomorrow night. I'm a big, fat dreader of any event that takes me out of my comfort zone, but I usually end up enjoying the process once I'm in the middle of it.

Writing in my sleep again, I guess, woke up with the phrase stomping around in my head, "Everything bleeds." And an ongoing argument, of which I caught only a piece, "Nuh-uh! Rocks don't bleed!" The comeback was, "Ever heard of oil-bearing shale?"

    It's weird in here.

Lenora - good to see you back, glad you're back to operational. Doesn't sound like any fun whatsoever.

Heather - That had to be hard, saying "no," but I agree with someone who said that the grands should see your presence in their lives as something special. The five months we spent with ours was amazing, but exhausting, and honestly, we felt a little (OK, a lot) taken for granted by the end of it. However much we love them, when our presence becomes an obligation rather than a gift, it becomes tough to deal with. I admire those like Karen who commit like that for the long term, but honestly won't do it again unless there are zero options.

The hubby's up and motoring, time to find the last little bits that need to be shoved into my tiny suitcase.

    Love y'all,

After your 12-km run a while ago - the one I believe you described as "your longest ever" - I wondered if you felt any after-effects. Judging from your comments above, you do. I know I get sore if I run considerably farther than usual. My joints and muscles don't mind much, but my symphysis is not pleased. :grumble: Recover soon!

I think there is some of the miraculous in there ... the specialists are floored by his recovery. Several different ones have used the word "remarkable". The neurosurgeon my husband saw for his back had not treated him anywhere along the way, but had seen all my husband's scans. So he did not know what kind of patient would be sitting in front of him but based on the scans, he had a certain expectation in mind, and he commented that my husband's recovery was "remarkable" several times ... then when my husband told him he had started cycling again but was only up to 27 km (at that point), the guy just about fell off his chair. He could hardly believe it, and told us that for someone with the damage my husband sustained (categorised as "extremely severe brain injury") to be cycling within the first year of the injury is simply amazing.

That's the sort of reaction we've had all along the way. :)

So I think there have been a lot of factors at work ... whatever it is, I'm thankful! :)

My right leg is in quite a bit of pain ... my left leg is a little achy but not bad. I've booked a massage for Wednesday, so I hope that will help. I'm not quite sure what's up with the right leg.

I went from 12 to 14 to 21 ... so that probably didn't impress my right leg at all!

If you have access to a pool, I found that gentle walking, light jogging in water makes everything feel better after a long run. Also, try walking backwards when going down stairs. It uses different muscles. Be sure to hold on and if people are around, expect odd looks and to need to explain.

Unfortunately, our beach isn't doing very well, the water quality hasn't been the best. :(

    Monday & Tuesday

Monday ... I ended up walking 5.5 km, despite the fact that my right leg is not cooperating at all well. Slow walking. But I couldn't manage stairs very well.

I had to walk that far to get to my dental surgeon to check on how my jaw is doing. Not bad ... could be a bit better. I do tend to clench my jaw the moment anything stressful happens and that does not help. I was starting to relax while we were on holiday, but then I got a bit tense about the half marathon.

Tuesday ... I walked 3.4 km and climbed 4 flights of stairs. Right leg still not good, and I'm tiring quickly, but I was determined to get around. Can't stop just because a leg hurts ... there are errands to run.

Photos ... I've added a bunch more photos from our holiday ...

    g39shbv1fwat.png

    ieq30pbd9lr4.png

And much more in that link. :)

Calendars ... I like paper calendars. I like having them hanging around the place so I can quickly make plans for things. I even had one hanging in the toilet room for a while, but that room is so narrow, it gets knocked down. I'm probably one of the few people who has a paper calendar at work. :)

But I don't write on any of those calendars ... I put all my appointment details into my work Outlook calendar and my Google calendar because I need to have them on my phone.

Then, I print a weekly schedule to hang on our fridge and write up main appointments on a month's whiteboard calendar. Those are mainly for my husband so he knows what's going on.

It didn't used to be like this, but now I've got appointments just about every day, so I've got to keep track.

Good morning all! Happy Tuesday! Nothing new here. So...
Heather- Making a commitment to your grandkids makes being with them a job. I always told (tell) my own kids that I will not watch my grandchildren in my daycare. I want them to WANT to be with me; not HAVE to be with me. I hope your son and DIL understand this. If they don't now, they will. As for your boisterous boy; does he like codes? He seems to be about the same age as Trentin. I have been keeping Trentin busy by writing him notes in pigpen cipher. He loves it! I think I am going to create a map and treasure hunt with the clues and locations all written in cipher. Legos are another go to to keep him busy.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigpen_cipher
Lenora- So sorry for your fall/injury and subsequent issues with doctors and recovery! Glad to see you back, though! Sending warm thoughts for complete recovery.
Machka- Sorry to hear of your sore muscles! You probably already know this, but even though a swim in the ocean might do you good, the walk across the beach to get there could do you/your already injured muscles harm. Be careful! Maybe just RICE? Does your leg that hurts worse feel like a muscle injury, or could it be a pulled/strained tendon?
Lisa- Safe travels to your retreat! Hope you can pick a little nugget of wisdom/knowledge out of the time with your coworkers! <3:*

My brother in law, who lives a couple of miles away, called yesterday to ask if I wanted some chicken corn chowder that he made (he is a fantastic cook after being a bachelor for many, many years; his wife is a lucky woman!). I felt horrible that I had to decline that offer. He would have brought a large container and I would have been the only one eating it, as neither Tim nor Colin like it. LOVE chowders, but definitely NOT on my list of things I should be eating. This is the first time in a couple of weeks of clean eating that I have truly felt deprived. Oh well, I decided that I will treat myself to a bowl of chowder at a nice restaurant as soon as I get my weight down.

First kiddo has arrived and is ready for breakfast. I think I am in trouble today, as it already feels like it should be Friday. :(

Do you need to go to the house to see the dogs? Can you meet in a more neutral place to hand them over, like a park or even the footpath in front of the house, but not in the house and not in the yard?

I'll find out tomorrow when I go for a massage. To me, it actually feels more like nerve pain. It's an odd one I haven't had before, sort of wraps around the right hip and across the front of my thigh.

Morning, I'm in my January funk, but listing my way out of it ;) That is listing all I am grateful for, at least 5 things, listing my to dos and the satisfaction of checking items off, and "list"ening ;) to others so I am not falling into soooo much navel gazing o:) I defintely need some sunshine and fresh air so i will brave the cold and dry (grateful for no precipitation right now) and get some deep breathing going. This usually snaps me out of it. Last night I went to bed with a splitting headache at 8 p.m. and it seemed to do the trick when I woke up.

Great to hear of so many of you all doing so well this time of year.

Paper Calendars - I LOVE them. My whole family does, well, did. Every year my Dad, my Mom and an Uncle got a calendar with the family birthdays marked on it. I also added any friends of theirs that they let me know about. I would spend quite a long time filling in each calendar so it had only that person's relevant information on it. I still do that for me, and have 3 that I keep in the house. One in my office, one in my pantry in the kitchen and one in the garage by the door. I mark birthdays, anniversaries, etc on it. I don't put appointments on it, those are in my iCal (along with the birthdays, anniversaries, etc). I like to be able to glance at them and see that a birthday is coming up in a week or two and I need to get a card in the mail. Oh yeah, I'm still that person, I mail all my friends and family birthday cards and anniversary cards. Electronic greetings are great, but there is something about holding an actual card.

:) We have a paper calendar on the wall in the kitchen (above where the land line phone used to be). Jake buys a calendar every year with beautiful photos and spiritual sayings and large boxes to write in. When he gets the calendar in September I write all the important birthdays in the boxes. We use this calendar for appointments so we can both see what is coming up. We mark the day for pet med flea and heartworm meds. Jake keeps an electronic calendar on his phone, but I rely entirely on the paper one on the wall. I have a calendar on the windowsill in the bathroom where I place a sticker every day when I've walked 10,000 steps.

:)Allie, maybe you could reframe your attitude toward going to Tom's house to pick up the dogs and recognize how grateful you are to no longer live in that home with a man who treated you so badly for so long.

:) The Mexican food for our anniversary was fabulous. I drew a line across the middle of the plate with my knife and brought half of it home for my evening meal. Nevertheless, the sodium is a killer and my weight it up two pounds and will take close to a week to settle back to where it should be.

I am sorry, Allie. I do think it may be time to let the dogs go, or have Tom bring them to visit you. I would never have thought to hang out with my kids at my ex's place, nor would he. Even when he came to pick them up, he waited outside. We are emotional creatures, and it's hard to move on when we are consistently going back.

I also find Tom's comment insensitive because it implies that you don't love the dogs as much as he does because you are bothered by his new arrangement.

have you tried any compression on the bum leg/knee? You are right to keep gently moving. But no biking or running yet, right?

Eta, oh, I see, it's hip rather than knee or leg. Much harder to compress.

When you get the massage, ask for stretches you can do. I have had SI joint disfunction a couple times, and now when I feel it coming on, I hit those stretches double time.

Viv: I remember the US stations playing the national anthem when they closed down for the night, too. That doesn’t happen anymore as far as I can tell, because they never close down for a night. There are power outages from time to time, usually weather related. In our area they are very infrequent. :star:

Lisa: You seem to have a busy and flexible brain. I like that in a person.

Machka: I’m sorry to hear that you’re having problems with your right leg. I hope the situation resolves on its own, but if it doesn’t you may need to get medical help. KJ’s RICE suggestion is excellent. My understanding of RICE is rest, ice, compression, and (gentle) exercise. :flowerforyou: I like paper calendars, too. I use them along with my electronic calendars on the computer & phone.

(((Allie))): I agree with Felicia. It may be time to let the dogs go or have Tom bring them to you. Tom is a selfish j*ck*ss who cares only for himself and his personal convenience. That said, I’m pretty sure he will take adequate care of the dogs.

I’ve been up late watching Outlander episodes on TV. I think they’re doing an excellent job of presenting the books. Often, movies made from books leave me disappointed. This production isn’t disappointing me at all.

Lenora - sorry to hear about your fall, hope you recover soon.

Kim - I only use plain Jane CICO too. I can eat what I want just in moderation. I have noticed though that high carb days makes the scale rise for a couple of days.

Barbie - That sounds like a great Anniversary plan. Happy Anniversary to you.

Michele - in Canada they played O Canada when the tv signed off for the night.

Lisa - I have been having odd dreams due to a book I’m reading and tv reports about how bad the flu is this year. Waking up disoriented and feeling stressed. I can’t put the book down though, only a few chapters left.

Machka - I use paper calendars as well. I like having the visual all laid out in front of me.

Allie - I can understand how difficult it must be to walk into the house. You give Tom credit for being a good pet dad, but I think you are kicking *kitten* and taking names for being a great pet Mom and daughter in law. You have a very big heart and it’s terrible that Tom abused it.

Okie - For about 6 years I mailed cards to all of my family. 2 years ago when we moved here, I stopped because I wasn’t enjoying my craftroom enough to make them. I have been working in my craftroom the last couple of weeks and think I will start up again. I love sending cards to people, but I refuse to pay the price for them nowadays.

I have to go into the city today to pay some bills and pick up some groceries. I am praying my car doesn’t let me down.

My husband told me last night that he doesn’t care for chicken anymore! It’s not my cooking in anyway he just doesn’t like it! I’m not sure what to do about this as he also doesn’t care for pork. I told him I am not making beef everyday so I’m not sure what to make. He suggested fish, but I only like Caotain Highliner and have no clue how to cook any type of fish. This is going to be a problem and I guess I’ll have to do some research on other meals.

I am off to decorate some Disney Princess dresses I cut out last night to make a banner for my Granddaughter’s birthday party next weekend. Her birthday was on the 3rd, but my daughter likes to have her party later in the month to give everyone a bit of time to recover from Christmas. When she was being planned, my daughter thought if they started trying in April she would have been a March or April baby, surprise she got pregnant the day the IUD came out! Her due date was actually January 1st.

    Have a great day,

    Oh, yes. Happy Anniversary, Barbie!

Hubby is feeling very puny and being such a baby about it. Refusing to do anything about it but complain. I hope he goes into the doctor today. I think it's just a minor cold or some other virus, but he was really annoying me last night and I was teasing him pretty hard about it.

Well, it looks like my 18 year old senior is going to go ahead and graduate next week. He didn't have to go to school this year at all, but I convinced him that he should go anyway, but he is just done. And he's right. There isn't a lot of purpose to being there if he already has all of the requirements finished. He's already been accepted into a couple colleges for the fall. He's going to spend a few weeks with his dad in Korea, and he said he wants to go hiking, camping, and hang out with his friends. Not really a complete gap year, but a gap half year, I guess. I approved with the condition that he do something productive and not just hang out in his room and game all day! Work, Travel, those are acceptable pursuits.

It looks like I didn't gain any permanent weight from being in Mexico. The last three days we were at an all inclusive, and I didn't go crazy with eating, but I did drink. A lot. Mojitos and Margaritas. I guess we were active enough, that after the sodium left my system, I am basically where I was when I left.

So now, I get serious. CICO. My legs and arms are already sore, but the good kind of sore, not the nasty-I can't-move-or-do-anything kind of sore.

It's cloudy and cold here today, so I am ready to go back to Mexico!

About the TV sign-off: In Sweden they usually had some kind of host who came on and introduced the next program. When the last program was finished he or she would say something variant of the theme "That's all we had to show you today. We wish you a good night." No national anthem. Just silence for a few minutes, then the test screen came on and they started broadcasting the sound testing pattern, pure electronic tones that rose in octave intervals. After some time (I don't know how long) they broadcast a signal that shut down the whole system and the screen went black.

Which reminds me of a funny story. Once, many years ago, some category of people who worked with television broadcasting went on strike. It didn't last long. I think it started at midnight and ended in early afternoon. On the evening news that day, the anchorperson introduced a news feature about the strike. He said: "Last night, this is what we heard on our TVs." The control room started a tape of the end of the previous evening's broadcast. When it got to the shutdown signal, every television screen in the country went blank. It took the technician several minutes to get it all up and running again. Pretty embarrassing blooper!
