Lisa – what a wonderful thing you did for that lady! Just another reason why I’m proud to call you my friend. How long has your son been with you? I totally understand how you feel
Michele in NC
Michele, my son moved into the house we're rehabbing right when we bought it, which was mid-July of last year, and was here throughout all the deconstruction and mess stages. It gave him a place where he didn't have to pay rent, and us the assurance someone was in the house, as so much of what we got for the house was delivered when we couldn't be here, and when the workmen that did some of the plumbing had to have someone here. Corey and I moved into the house October 18, almost exactly three months later, so we've all lived together now for nearly three months. Ten weeks from today, we'll take our son to the plane to go to Oregon and start his schooling.
Thank you (and all of you) for the compliments on my helping the lady, but honestly, I think the thing that made a difference for her was less the assistance and more simply acknowledging the fact that she was alive, that for those few moments I was with her, she was visible. That's what nearly made me cry, and made me think so much of y'all. Our need to be visible, to be part of the life around us, drives so much of what we're doing here on MFP, I think. When we're overweight, we allow it to make us feel ignored, unwanted, and unseen.
A lot of thought and pondering on how and why I ended up weighing 303 pounds at my highest showed me (long afterward) that it was for protection. I put on my blanket of fat so that I felt safe. Safe from my abusive father, safe from being female, because all it ever did to that point was put me in danger. It kept me in my first marriage, because if I was fat, my first husband could neglect and ignore me and had an excuse. I remember even saying, when I was at my highest weight, "Not worried about rapists, because who wants to rape a 300-pound woman?" I felt invisible, but it was because I wasn't looking at other people, because I was hiding within my heaviness. I didn't WANT people to look at me, so I didn't look at them.
After I got together with Corey (my husband now), I told him that he would never have looked at me when I was heavy. He said, "No, you would never have looked at me, because you would have assumed that I couldn't see you under the weight." He was right.
Heavy thoughts for a Sunday morning (pardon the pun). By the way, now I look at people, and I smile, and they smile back. I don't hide anymore. I haven't for more than ten years. It's a better place to be, both inside my head and out in the world.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR9 -
on my second cup of tea, sometimes ya just need it, this time using heavy cream.. not bad at all
I love Lil the lady who comes to hang out with Alfie, but she will sit in my den with the tv on . and watch tv which is fine but doesnt pay attention to what Mr Mr is getting into... I have an antique decoy duck that was my grandfathers and I look yesterday and the beak is chewed off... good lord really? you sorta got a laugh and he has a thing for pillows and I have to put them up and out of the way so he doesn't obliterate them..
well will finish my tea and away I go2 -
Good morning, Ladies!
@bwcetc, what a great idea to use the “imperfect” produce! Love seeing less waste and farmers being supported!
@barbiecat, freedom from “decision fatigue”. I love that!
@Machka9, congrats on your first half-marathon. That’s amazing!
@wizzywig, your pup is so cute!
Woke up at 4 a.m. this morning. DH must have been up in the middle of the night and his computer in his office somehow started a video and woke me. Hope this doesn't put me in too bad of a mood today. It was irritating as once I wake I cannot get back to sleep. Can't complain though because he's putting my office chair together for me this afternoon. LOL!
Hopefully, our friends will make it back today from their vacation. They were delayed in Missouri by the snow. Woke up this morning and their pup peeed on my recumbent bike for the third time this week. He's never gone inside our house before when we've taken care of him so I'm thinking it may be because we have another dog now and he's vying for attention. Four times I've had to clean up after him and he pooped the first night he was here, and besides getting my bike he got our corn plant (this year's Christmas tree) and I had to move it outside since it was a wicker basket. I think it may be dead now but hopefully will come back. He's really pushed my last nerve this visit. His owners are coming home today so it's our last day with him.
Hope you all have a great Sunday!
Blessings,

Phew! Three children, 7, 5 and 2 are a lot of effort, even with the two of us. Max, the 7 year old, can understandably get a bit frustrated with the pace of the littler ones, so he got a bit boisterous occasionally and I got cross. He broke the squeaker on our 5 second rule game by shaking it much too hard. They don't seem to sell them separately. It still times ok, but doesn't squeak. Otherwise we managed ok by doing lots of different activities. I was channelling KJ.
I felt pleased that we had looked after them for three hours in our own home, which is not really set up for kids. Bea did try to rearrange my favourite ceramics! It enabled my son to run over 11 miles , up hills, with his club, and DDIL to go for a run and then prepare her conference speech. We are glad to be of service.
Tomorrow we are picking Max and Edie up from school and going back to their home with them. Stay until bedtime. Will have to wing it on food.
Trying to cut back on calories today. I'm cooking a chilli in the IP right now to have with broccoli.
I'm very tired because I couldn't get to sleep last night. Grrrrrrrrrr! It was about 3 am before I went off. I moved to my study/guest room in the loft conversion and read a biography of Winston Churchill. I can feel my eyelids drooping. DH is starting a cold and feeling rubbish. Caught it from the kids last week, of course. They were coughing and sneezing like fountains today.

Sunday -- Today I ran my very first Half Marathon!!! 21.2 km.
Stats according to Strava
Distance: 21.30km
Elevation: 177m
Moving Time: 2:51:15
Elapsed Time: 2:53:17
Pace: 8:02/km
Calories:1,694
I had done four 10Ks in the past year, and so I figured I was ready. I signed up for the Cadbury Marathon and selected half marathon. Then I started training in earnest ... for about a week or so. December was an incredibly busy month and I wasn't able to get in as much training as I wanted, but I still tried to walk lots, run when I could, cycle when I could and climb stairs.
Fortunately I had 16 days off over the Christmas break and I was able to be active every day.
I ran a 12 km two weeks ago, and a 14.4 km last weekend. The 12 km went all right ... the 14.4 went all right while I was running, but I felt awful after. I'm actually glad that happened because it altered my strategy for the better.
This past week, I just walked in order to give myself rest.
Today, I was up at an absolutely unearthly hour of the morning (4 am), on the road by 5 am, and at the event by 5:45 am.
The marathon runners were set off at 6 am, and my event went at 6:30 am. My husband's event (5K) went at 8:45 am.
It was a perfect day ... blue sky and hardly any wind. The starting temp was 10C and it gradually increased to 18C by the end.
I followed my revised strategy which appeared to give me the energy to the end. Rather than running on an empty stomach the whole way, I was doing gatorade and water at the drink stations, and Gu Energy Chews along the way. I also ate about half an hour before the run. Fuel is good!
And then I settled into my pace and jogged.
My legs were cooperative until about 18 km when they decided they'd had enough of this nonsense, and that's when I started walking & jogging.
I finished in 02:51:11 which was faster than my estimate. I had guessed I'd be somewhere between 3 and 3.5 hours.
AVERAGE PACE: 08:06
OVERALL: 653 OF 694
FEMALE: 342 OF 377
F (50-54): 36 OF 39
A nice solid back-of-the-pack finish for my first half marathon!!
And my husband? He did his 5K in 46 minutes ... mostly jogging with a little walking. I was so proud of him.
We got our bags of chocolate and stuff from Cadbury, and great medals! We shared hot chips while watching the presentations for the top 3 of each event. Then we came home and slept for about 3 hours.
I'm quite stiff and sore, and I think my husband is too a bit. We'll see how I go walking briskly to the bus tomorrow!
But nevertheless, I'm thrilled to have done a half marathon!!

Beth near Buffalo: I would love to hear more about your produce delivery service as you go along. I wonder what sorts of veggies you will get.
Okie: I love pork verde but DH can’t eat pork any more so I don’t cook it any more. My mouth is watering thinking about yours. :ohwell:
Michele: We had a freezer and wished for a bigger one, so we bought a bigger one and kept the original one. Now we have two in our garage. We never park a car there, due to lack of room.
Machka: Congratulations to both you and your DH for your run. WTG! Running a half marathon is a tremendous accomplishment! A 5K for your DH is every bit as impressive and proof he is healing.
Barbara: Congrats on your good time with the dog group.
Lisa: You are so lucky to have Corey. Everyone needs a person like him in their life, but many don’t have that kind of blessing. I think of myself as one of the lucky ones with a great DH, too. :flowerforyou:
Yesterday DH installed our new dishwasher and we ran a load of dishes. They were pristine. The wash cycle is an hour long, though. That will take some getting used to. I am so proud of him. Between us, we accomplished some heavy work that was a real challenge. The dishwasher was delivered into our kitchen, but DH did all the work. I think he’s feeling proud of himself and he deserves to be proud.

"I signed up for a fresh produce delivery service. It's a company that buys "misfit" produce from organic farmers. Food that grocers won't take because it's not "perfect. The intent is to reduce food waste and support local farmers ... and sells it to people like me at 30-50% less than grocery store prices. We're going to see what it's like as we can cancel at anytime. Produce will be delivered every 2 weeks (I chose the delivery time) and we're only buying a 10-12 pound box since it's just the two of us. I'm hoping this will encourage more variety in our diet as I hate to throw out food."
Beth near Buffalo
If it's like the delivery service I used last year until almost December, when my diet never specialized because of the surgery, I loved it. The stuff was fresh as could be, and sometimes I couldn't find any imperfections. Hope you're as happy as I was.

I learned an important lesson this morning. Don’t chop my salad veggies for the week during my fasting period. I had to stop myself from tasting each veggie as I chopped it.
Which reminds me, I forgot to chop my turkey. I think I’ll wait until this evening to do that.
Happy Sunday Ladies!

Michele - the one girl cant take advantage of the sale price as she is an EMT that works out of town in industrial camps when she has breaks from school. She is out of the city until the 24th. One of the other girls told her to call and order by credit card, I don’t know if she has done that or not though. She had a very tough December, her vehicle was stolen while she was at work, the day she did her Christmas shopping on the 22nd. They took the keys right out of her purse that was in the employee storage area. Her truck was recovered last weekend by the police unharmed, but her gifts were of course gone.
Barbie - my daughter started meal planning last year to help her out with the “decision fatigue” she says it has saved her money and lots of stress! She created a board and uses 3X3 sticky notes where she has all of her meals written out. Every two weeks she updates what the next two weeks will be and uses her ingredients on her sticky notes to make her grocery list. It’s working for her, I would feel too restricted I think, although I have been giving it some thought. 2 meals a week for her is “eat at Mom’s” 😂
Machka- congratulations to you and your husband that was a huge accomplishment!
Allie - I so admire you for helping others. If it brings you joy, a little for your vacation fund you should continue when you want to. I’m sure if you were ever asked to do too much you can always use that magical word “no”.
Kelly - “Marvin The Martian” legs. That made me burst out laughing. It is such an accurate description though.
Lisa - I have a friend that I feel has the same thoughts as you did about the weight. She was sexually abused as a young girl by a family member. It’s her protection.
Heather - my husband is always exhausted when our Grands leave after a visit. I could keep them for days on end but not if he’s around. I love doing things with them and just watching them play.
They sure do carry all the bugs though don’t they?
I was given a new Nora Roberts book for Christmas it is about a strain of flu called H1N5 wiping out the world population, not my type of book really, but it has me hooked.
Yesterday I read several news reports that our flu season has claimed 6 toddlers, 4 of them in the neighboring province. The flu strain this year is H1N1, the news reports unsettled me an maybe more than I realized as I slept very poorly last night due to dreams that my book had become reality.
This is why I like the fluff books with not a lot of substance. 😂
My daughter is coming today so we can design her wedding invitations, we will be taking a break so that she can go see the Bumblebee movie with her Father and Nephew. I bought them tickets as a Christmas present for this.
I will enjoy some alone time while they are gone. Being alone in the house is a rarity for me.
Have a great day everyone,
Tracey in Edmonton

)…By the way, now I look at people, and I smile, and they smile back. I don't hide anymore. I haven't for more than ten years. It's a better place to be, both inside my head and out in the world.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
Lisa, I felt teary when I read your story. I started off a skinny kid. When I was about 7 or 8 I began to gain (I think it was pre-puberty or growth gain.) My mother became obsessed with my weight, put me on a diet, asked the school cafeteria how many calories in my lunches. I was miserable. We finally got me to a weight we both agreed was lovely when I was 14. I maintained that until she died, when I was 18. It wasn't that she was no longer there to control me. I think it was more that if I made myself back into her "project" I'd feel closer to her.
I didn't look up either. I didn't gain enough weight to be "safe". I gained to about 160 from 125. I thought I was immense. I was preyed in while drinking (Yes, that began then too!) In shirt, I was a different person.
I told my (3rd and last/best) husband, whom I met when I was 42 at a 12-step meeting, "You are getting the product of a lot of work. I'm not the same person I was 4years ago." It took counseling, a lot of talk with others like me, and nearly losing my children before my life began to calm down. The weight stayed at around 200, however. But I was outgoing, smiling, assured and positive. No one puts Baby in the corner anymore!

I like my simple life. I don't feel restricted. I feel free to do what's important because I shop for the same foods, prepare the same meals, wear the same clothes, follow the same schedule. It's not a lifestyle for everyone but suits me great.
The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want the MOST for what they want at the MOMENT.

Tracey - love that poster - seems so true about guys losing weight quickly.
Katla - so glad your new dishwasher is installed! Kudos to your DH for getting his handyman skills honed and put to good use!
A reminder - the free viewing of The Real Skinny on Fat starts January 15th, and here's the sign-up link: http://therealskinnyonfat.com/optin/
I see they are promoting it as "Keto", but if it's the same as last year's, it's about how the "low-fat" push actually pushed more sugar and carbs on folks. It covers Keto but also covers eating healthy fats and a good all-over diet, not necessarily just low-carb.

Sharon near Seattle: It seems that you have triumphed over hard times and are still working on taking good care of yourself. I find that very admirable.
Lanette: I signed up for the real skinny on fat again. I may have done it twice for this set. It will be worth it. Thank you for keeping us connected with this program. :flowerforyou:
Allie: If you’ve lost 8 lbs in two weeks that is a super quick loss. Congratulations! Stay strong & healthy.
I was scheduled for a riding lesson today, but my teacher had a conflict so that has been cancelled. I am considering whether to go out to the stable and I’m not sure yet whether I have enough energy. I helped DH install the new dishwasher yesterday. His work was brilliant. Some of the heavy lifting and moving was in my domain and I feel it today. The first load of dishes was sparkling clean but it lasted for a very long time. We’re running load #2 right now on a different setting. This one is shorter and lasts 1 hour. The other cycle was much longer than an hour.

Katla - our 'ecowash' on the dishwasher lasts over 3 hours. We just put it on and forget about it, sometimes at night.
Calories creeping up today, but the chilli was heavenly. Have half left to freeze. That makes me happy. I succumbed to a bit of snacking this afternoon because DH was in the other room watching his sport. Good, protein snacks, but too many calories. Tomorrow will be a better day.
Not exercising really throws me out. My life becomes unmanageable without it. The two pillars of my daily life, exercising and writing. Did neither today, but feel good about hosting the grandchildren.
Tracey - It's DH who can take any amount of the grandchildren, but today he was incubating a cold. I love them in small doses. I am not a natural child minder. I have learnt so much from watching DH and DDIL. I actually enjoy it a lot these days, but it's not long before I've run out of steam and want my life back. I do adore them though. And I miss them when they've gone.

I just discovered I have access to Vera Season 9 right now through my Amazon Prime/Britbox subscription. I'm not sure I watched Season 8 so will start there tonight. Need to table Silent Witness for a while. I would much rather watch your British detective/mysteries than those made in the USA. Love the varied plots and settings.

Good Sunday everyone!
First and foremost I have a PSA- Don't trip over the cord to your carpet shampooer after you have spent two hours shampooing the carpets. I repeat do NOT trip over the cord. No I wasn't injured, but when I came back through a minute later I realized why my carpets just don't seem clean!!!! That lead to an hour of tools and high pressure water to clean out the shampooer!!!! Who would have thought a shampooer needed cleaned?!?! Now I have to wait for it to dry out to avoid any potential shocking hazard, then will reshampoo the dang carpets! I am ashamed to say it was disgusting. If I wasn't trying to watch what I spend money on, I probably would have thrown it in the dumpster and bought a new one!!!!!
I believe our snow is over for now. We got 10". I plowed the driveway before work, after work, before bed, and again this morning. We are finally seeing blacktop.
This is our front yard. The gates to the driveway are way down past the two trees on the right of the picture. It is about a quarter of a mile (402 m). This doesn't include the circle between my MIL's house and ours. It is what I walk when the weather is warm. I am NOT a cold weather person. Try to stay busy inside. Heading to shop to plow parking lot here shortly. I hope that the sun will dry it out!
I started to type last night, but then spent an hour talking with my sister. It was a good conversation!
Lisa- What a lovely thing to do! I so love your story telling. There are a couple of you ladies that are obviously writers. I am a squirrel! I have held the door open for people, but have never thought to ask if I could be of any other assistance. I will keep that in mind. You made me laugh when you talked about alone time with husband and someone else also chimed in about being chased around the house. When my nieces would come back home my brother and SIL would taunt them with "umm- you might want to change your sheets" or "oh, you might want to wipe that off before you sit there"! It was so embarrassing for the nieces, but so funny! I love your home transformation!
Machka- Congratulations! You not only accomplished it but in better time than you had thought! So impressive! I am impressed with your husband as well! He has come such a long way! Your ability to keep everything in sequence with all you do is admirable as well!
Rebecca I was channeling you the other night....I needed more protein, less fat. Thought grilled cheese, but didn't feel like making it, plus too much fat. So I thought cheese melted in tortilla shell, fast easy, no mess. But still lacked protein, add refried beans! It was so yummy! Afterwards I really wanted chocolate....fresh cut berries, a little hershey's chocolate syrup, and some whip cream. Again so good and met some food requirements as well as craving. You ladies all make me stop and think! This morning was homemade applesauce pancakes with cottage cheese layer topped with applesauce. No butter...and two eggs.
Katla The new dishwashers do take longer to run, but use less water. It can be annoying, but like Heather UK said, we just put it on, usually at night, and empty in the morning. Another thing Scrape your dishes, but don't rinse. It gives the detergent something to do besides stick to your glassware. Happy that your DH was able to accomplish this.
I know there was more, but can't think right this second. Did get the shop parking lot plowed so is ready for tomorrow.
Thank you Ladies for being the Individual, Strong, and Supportive women you are!
Hugs to all!
Prayers to those that need them!
Welcome to the new ladies!

Heather: I’m guessing our first dishwasher load must have been similar to your eco wash. The second load had a 1 hour cycle and the dishes were quite well cleaned. Seems like the eco wash would be great for a meal with guests so that there is more to clean. On average, it takes us a day or more to fill our dishwasher unless we have company. :flowerforyou: I was so impressed with DH. The new dishwasher was delivered to our kitchen & they hauled away the old one. The rest was up to us. DH installed the dishwasher by himself—with a little help from me. He is very skilled with mechanics & electronics. He grew up working on various home improvement and repair projects and enjoys them. His health situation has caused challenges but he works through them.
A cousin called last night and we chatted for ages. It was wonderful to talk about our lives right now, as well as a bit of family history. We even talked about other family members. Most of it was positive, but there were a few barbs toward one person or another. The barbs all went toward her siblings. Since I have none, I did quite a bit of listening. :ohwell:

Questions to ask yourself when decluttering:
Marie Kondo: Does it spark Joy?
Dana K White: if I were looking for this, would it even occur to me that I had one?
Katiebug: Would I clean poop off of this in order to keep it?
If the answer to any one of the three is no, then out it goes!9 -

Katla, We wash dishes after my 5 AM breakfast every other day. The cycle takes almost three hours and is finished in time to empty around lunch time.
Katiebug, Those are great decluttering questions.
Machka, congrats to you and your husband on your races.
Heather, I have extremely limited interest in entertaining grandchildren. A very short visit is enough for me.
We took a long nap after lunch and when we got up, Jake had a phone message from a friend who had stopped by the house to see him. I guess the friend didn't ring the doorbell and since the dogs were asleep with us, they didn't realize someone was at the door so they didn't bark.
It is beautiful and sunny here with the temps over 50 degrees. I resisted the impulse to do anything in the yard. I don't want to forget that there is a lot winter still to come in Washington.
