Machka: Keeping you in my prayers and good thoughts. I hope you get a resolution that solves the problem and allows you to enjoy long-distance bike rides again. The bone density scan and MRI are both good ideas. I have had two bone density scans, several years apart. The first one showed bone loss and I was advised to take calcium and exercise. The second one was set up by my new doctor. It showed increased bone density to the point I’m out of the worry zone. I am thrilled and very happy about it. I was told by my previous doctor that it was impossible to improve bone-density after the first bone scan but she thought I might be able to slow the decline. That turned out to be less than what has happened. Weight bearing exercise plus Vitamin D3 are the things that I increased and I also started taking alondrate, a bone density medication. The combination is working beautifully for me, although it hasn’t fixed my damaged knee. Keeping my weight down is the best helper for the damaged knee, which is an over-use injury that is not related to bone density. I damaged my cartilage while posting at a trot on a lesson horse for too long. (This is not the same teacher I've had for the past few years.) Losing just a few pounds of weight makes a difference in eliminating knee pain for me. :flowerforyou:
Funny story about a bone density scan ...
In 2008, when I was 41 years old, I was in my last year of my Bachelor of Education degree in Canada. I had also been involved in ultra-long distance cycling for a decade at that point, and ultra-long distance cycling doesn't do any good for the bones at all. In fact, there's evidence it can be harmful. For reasons that have not been well researched, long distance cycling uses up a massive amount of the body's calcium (that's partly why my teeth are in such horrible shape). And I had started perimenopause.
I had also had a bad crash in 2007 which resulted in a separated shoulder which was still giving me issues almost a year later.
So knowing all that, I went to a university doctor to ask about the shoulder, and also asked about a bone density scan.
She wasn't much help regarding the shoulder, and when I got to the bone density scan she said to me, "We don't do those for people your age."
I explained about the long distance cycling ... which she dismissed entirely. I don't think she realised the distances I was talking about or thought I was exaggerating or something.
I explained about the perimenopause ... which she dismissed with "You're too young for perimenopause."
I asked at what age people can start getting bone density scans, and she replied, "The youngest they'll start doing them is when you reach 40 and you've got a way to go before that", and then gave me the "we're done here" and ushered me out.
Then it hit me ... she thought I was the age of the average student at the university!! Figured I was in my mid or maybe late 20s!!
But then I moved to a remote part of Australia for a number of years and never bothered pursuing a bone density scan. Now I will. Surely I'm old enough now!!

The dogs and I had a nice walk together after our third nap of the day.
Here is an interesting question to ask yourself--What would I get up and do on a day when I was really sick? No need to share your answer, but I realized that walking the dogs is what I'd do even if I did nothing else on my to do list.
Barbie
Barbie: I'd make DH a substantial mid-day meal. He sometimes forgets to eat, but has a hearty appetite for any meal that is prepared for him. He struggles with microwaving, so really needs the assistance. Clearly Gretchen Rubin is a brilliant woman if she is quoting you.
No January goals were set, so for February my intentions are:
* Study and practice Reiki daily
* Exercise patience and give my healing hand rest
* Adjust calories in to compensate for less gym exercise this month
* Adjust budget and begin augmenting savings again
* SMILE with my mouth, eyes and heart. Builds compassion.

Barbie
I've been really sick a few times in recent years ... measles in 2016 is one example ... and all I did was to get myself somewhat together to go to the doctor.
If I don't figure I need a doctor or doctor's certificate, then I only get up for the toilet. And even that can be a struggle.

Well I did it and made it five days with no dessert. First time in probably a year. Kept it real low sugar all week, barely any. Tomorrow will be cheat day but will try and stay under calories. Might make half batch of cookies and freeze all except a few immediately. Coming to the forums made all the difference. So glad I found you all!7

Did some HIIT today. The plan for tomorrow is to do an Upper Body Bikini Burn DVD.
Pip – (((HUGS))). You are in a tough spot. Just keep remembering that retirement isn’t that far away. Treating your employees so that they don’t want to leave…that’s the way to do it. How wonderful that you are running with Kirby
Welcome everyone new!
My sinuses are acting up so I took a decongestant and, as usual, I’m really dry. Drinking a lot of water.
Went to SC today with some friends. Went to this ceramics place that they rave about. Personally, I wasn’t impressed. Then went to a store and bought some paint for ceramics that our place no longer carries. Had lunch at Fatz, just had steamed broccoli and water to drink. These decongestants make me not want to eat (which is a good thing)
Anette – sure hope we get a refund. That’s fantastic for you!
M – your story about the BDS reminded me of one of mine. I fractured my ankle and after it had healed, I went to get up and it totally gave out on me. I knew something was wrong, I just didn’t know what. I kept insisting to the MD that I wanted a BDS. She kept saying over and over “we don’t do them for people who haven’t gone thru menopause”. Well, I kept on and on and she finally ordered it. I honestly think she did it more to shut me up than anything else. Was she ever surprised when it came back that I had osteoporosis!
Going to take a shower and go to bed.

Hi all,
Slept. Like a log.
What would I do if I were really sick? Crawl to the toilet. That's all I could do. Oh, clean my teeth, still lying down. Took my blood pressure meds. I made easy food.
Didn't wash or dress for days. Didn't change my pyjamas. Still haven't washed my hair. Will do that today.
I will try a bit a bit of rowing today.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -
Me, this morning, after my illness. Note the lovely hairstyle. I will wash it today.

Carol sorry about the stinky gift. TMI:Scooter puked up a bit yesterday. I'd worry as he is subject to pancreatitis, but then I saw bits of the greenie dental chew in the spew. Good morning from Ohio! Warming up here for a few days. Highs in the 40-50* and no more lows below freezing until next Thursday! Lots of rain forecasted, but at least not snow.
Aubrey continues to impress and delight. They are on a path to bringing her home this upcoming week! My niece shared a video of her taking a bottle and says she is latching well. My niece is finally able to stay all the time with her! Praises!
My sil has been in a bad spot since September. Lots of counseling and learning about herself and she is coming around. She gave my dh and I a gift certificate to Eddie Merlots for our birthdays. DH really wanted to go tomorrow on my birthday, but they were booked. We are going this evening. OMG! It is a dining experience! I dont get excited about food, but I loved this place! It may be our new special occasion place. Too expensive to go very often. Friends took us there for Christmas. SIL is coming with us. It will be fun.
Tomorrow my youngest daughter is fixing me chicken n dumplings for lunch. My favorite meal. Will probably end up at a super bowl party for a short while. My oldest daughter and her family are on their way to Disney as I type.
Thank you ladies for all your support! Husband hasn't been hungry after work-smh. The upside is we haven't been eating out and I haven't had to really cook. The downside is me eating something substantial and not junk. I had a high protein day yesterday which I'd not my normal. I needed something lower fat with higher protein last night. Ended up with low fat cottage cheese and tomatoes for supper. Cottage cheese is the only thing I eat that is low fat. I don't care for the high fat kind except in lasagna;) Finished the evening with popcorn and one Andes mint.
Michele- sounds like you had a good time in spite of things. Now that you have been to that ceramic shop, you can decline next time. Been there. Done that. I hope you are feeling better today.
Hugs to those who are sick, injured. Or just plain dealing with stuffs!
Congratulations to all the met goals!
Encouragement to meet our February goals.
Appreciation for all of your stories and support!

Morning Ladies! hugs all around.
Going to get out of the house and enjoy a little cold sunshine today. Also going to make some meals for a colleague/friend who is facing gyn surgery later in the week. Very tough situation, she's an older mom and is facing her second round of cancer, five years ago, skin cancer and now (potentially) ovarian. She is having her left fallopian tube and ovary removed.
NYKAREN4 -
Kylia - I depend on fat-free cottage cheese as my go-to for protein, and tend to eat it with some highly spiced meat, like taco meat or spicy chicken, to keep protein levels high without adding too much to my calorie load. So pleased to hear of Aubrey's continued progress.
Heather - Bless your heart. You definitely don't look like your usual well-coiffed, smiling and poised self. Hope you're feeling better.
I am being driven crazy by my son's needy cat at the moment. Mrr has dogged (catted?) my every footstep ever since I got up this morning, which annoys both me and my cat, Egg. Me, because I've nearly tripped over him a half dozen times--he is not a small fragile cat, he's a big, hulking bear of a cat, and cannot be ignored when he's nearby. And it annoys Egg, because while she doesn't necessarily want affection right this minute, she heartily dissaproves of me petting Mrr. She's far less stressed about him overall, but hissing at him every time he gets within sight this morning. *sigh* Cats are weird.
For a change, a weekend stretches in front of us without plans or work to do... feels so luxurious! The only thing I must do today is get my daughter's painting in the mail before I go on driving restriction on Tuesday. Not exactly going to take long! Might be a good day for a drive, just exploring the area nearby us. And speaking of "us," while I miss our son, it's been so amazing to be just the two of us for the last week... Corey will pick John up next Saturday, and we'll have him for about six more weeks before he heads off to college in Oregon.
Love y'all,

So aside from getting extra Vit D (photo several posts above) ...
I was so tired last night that I slept for about 11 hours. That was probably good for the fatigue level, but also for my hip/leg. 11 hours of not putting any pressure on that leg meant that when I got up in the morning, it didn't ache so much.
Once awake, I finished taking down my Christmas decorations. My husband took them downstairs and put them away. He also helped by moving the dining room table into the non-Christmas location, and getting me all set up at it with my large, comfy office chair rather than a dining room chair. I've also got a footstool under the table.
I sit at the dining room table to use my laptop. If I need quiet, I'll take it to the office, but I prefer to sit at the dining room table whenever possible. My dining room table location gives me views out the big windows in three directions, and we're high up so I feel like I'm in a tree house. Looking out the window right in front of the table, I can see the water in the bay. It's nice and bright and cheerful.
I tidied things up a bit ... just a bit at a time, not too much walking. And started going through some of the heaps of paper that magically accumulate -- sorting them into categories. I would still love to get a professional organiser in to help me do it. I know how to do it ... I just want someone else to do it. But it costs so much. I could get my whole house cleaned twice for the amount a professional organiser will charge to sort paper for an hour. I don't get it.
Then I did my nails and worked on my husband's story for a bit.
I'm thinking of doing a slow cooker meal tomorrow. I haven't done that in ages. I do a fairly nice chicken-veg curry.
We were thinking about a BBQ, but there's a total fire ban on again tomorrow with the temp scheduled to hit 29C.
No walking, running, cycling, rowing, climbing stairs or lifting weights this weekend ... despite the fact that today was a gorgeous day for cycling. I'm trying to give my hip/leg a chance to start healing, whether it is bone or ligament or whatever. And I have to say that it feels better tonight than it did last night. Last night it was killing me.

Kylia ~ Enjoy your meal and Happy Early Birthday! What a nice gift from your SnL!3

Good morning. I hope it is a nice easy day for everyone.
Happy Birthday Kayla. Hope your special meal out was wonderful.
Here is how I fixed my cottage cheese for lunch the other day. Added to 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/2 avocado, cherry tomatoes, yellow pepper sliced thin and a boiled egg. It was probably too high in protein for me but it filled me up so much I didn’t eat much dinner
My bone density story is that I had one three years ago and the tech called me and said I need to take some kind of meds. She said I had a 25%. Chance of breaking something if I fell. So I reasoned I had a 75% chance of not breaking something. Sent a copy of report to DIL who is an Orthopedic Surgeon and she had a colleague review it. Result was I had good bone density. Had another one last year with similar results but with a med recommended that DIL said NO that is a bad med. she reviewed report and said density was better than last time. I actually think the machine is broken. So I will see what happens at my physical in March.
May work in the yard if it clears up. Suppose to be in the 60s is okay.
Michele- glad you found the paints you were looking for. Hope your sinuses get better.

Ok so my office manager just told me she is leaving..now this could be a game changer...she is moving to St Petersburg Fla. So the way this Dr is ,he has someone in mind for the job who is going to be a crazy task master...I dont need stress with this.. so I might start looking again.. I could not sit up front and deal with Mary day after day.because she is just a pill....5

Me again. Fatter than I've ever been or ever thought I could be. Eye opener last night when my 6.2 husband told me I was within 10 pounds of him. OMG!!! Lots of broken ribs and now surgery on my foot slowing me down. My walking boot comes off Monday and physical therapy starts there after. Good news is at this weight the first ten should drop pretty quickly. Then after a couple of months I ought to be able to start doing my barn chores and riding furiously and drop the next 30.

Allie: Sleepytime tea is one of two favorite teas for me. The other is peppermint. :flowerforyou:
Lanette: I’m looking forward to hearing what you think after taking the 500 mg of B3 from Vitacost. There is no “health food” store in my community, nor anywhere in the county that I know about. :ohwell:
Barbie: Your dogs are lucky.
M in OZ: Great to be thought dramatically younger than your own chronological age, but not reassuring about the quality of the doctor. My experience in life has taught me an important lesson, assume makes an @ss out of u & me. I wonder whether that doctor has learned that lesson by now. :grumble:
Rori: Your February intentions are well thought out. Particularly like the SMILE and need to remember to practice it more often. :flowerforyou:
Heather: I’m happy to hear that you slept well. That is the best possible thing to do when you are sick with a virus or flu. :flowerforyou:.
Kylia: Happy Birthday! In my experience, the best part of Super Bowl Sunday is the Budweiser commercial. I like college football, but pro ball is not as much fun from my point of view. Last year was an exception and I’m not sure what made the difference.
Pip: I hope that 5:25 am start time got you through the gauntlet to Seattle without a nasty traffic jam. Your photo is wonderful.
Cheryl: It is nice to see your post, but I’m sorry to hear about your health problems. :flowerforyou:
There isn’t much on my calendar today. I will very likely fill it up as the day goes by.

Machka- Surely you can get a Bone Density Scan now. I was given a req. to have one by my doctor at my last physical in August. I called to make the appointment for it, my mammogram, bloodwork, etc all on the same day. I was booking for September 11th. When it came to the BDS I was told I had to wait until after my 50th on the 13th otherwise Alberta Health wouldn’t cover it, so I had to schedule it for the 14th. I thought that was a little too particular.
Heather - i hope you feel 100% better soon. I feel I would hibernate in my bed if I was sick too.
Kylia - happy birthday!
Lisa - it’s so nice to have your house to yourself when that is what you have become accustomed to. Enjoy.
Sue - how fortunate that your DIL can review your reports and lead you in a different direction. Sometimes I wonder about the meds that some doctors just like prescribing.
Allie - so sorry you are losing your office manager. Hopefully he has someone in mind that can control Mary.
I have made my daughters birthday presents and cards. My eldest will be 30 tomorrow and my youngest will be 28 on Tuesday. I have invited them for dinner tomorrow and will have cake for dessert. I am keeping the Grands for the night tonight so tomorrow we may craft something for Mom and Auntie. I have to figure out what to have for supper yet. I am thinking crockpot lasagna. I can do most of it in the morning and then not have to think about it.
Yesterday I applied for the job that I truly want. It is within walking distance of my house, has a good wage and benefits and I think I’m well qualified for it. I made a fb post asking all my friends for prayers and the non praying friends good vibes. In the comments on that I found out about another job that I’m applying for today. Rumour here is that there are still between 200-300 applicants for any jobs that open up, so it’s still a poor economy.
