Welcome to the friendliest, most supportive thread you'll ever find. The title says "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
It helps me to check in with this thread every day for the friendship and support that has been so helpful on my weight loss journey.
If you had any goals or resolutions for January, how did you do?
Do you have any goals or resolutions for February that you'd like to share?
Resolutions for February:
*return to my daily meditation practice
*return to SWSY
Resolutions for January (with end of the month comments)
*get over my cold (successful)
*continue with good habits (logging food and exercise, drinking water, posting on this thread)--great

Machka, dear heart, I hope she is wrong! I had a collar bone that was broken dismissed as merely bruised, and dealt with that aftermath, because no X-ray was done. Hopefully she is overblowing the issue. You could use a break (and I don't mean a bone, but a respite) from bad news.
Good news on my side--next week Tuesday, I'll be first surgery of the day, at 7 a.m., which is always a good thing, fewer delays and a rested surgeon (one hopes). My husband, the workaholic, has decided to take the two days off with me and be there for me in the hospital--I'm mildly stunned about that. He's not really that guy, he shows his love in different ways than personal care, and it's nice to see him do this with no pressure from me, not even subtle pressure. And... the driving restriction is only for two weeks, when I expected it to be more like four to six weeks.
Unfortunately, my nickname for the physical therapist is in charge is "Old Yeller." She was four feet from me and yelling throughout the pre-op education class. Fairly sure she's not the in-home PT person, which is a good thing. Not fond of people who yell at me.
Corey built a fire for me before he left, as today is our most bitter cold day, and it's lovely. Going to go do my pre-op exercises in front of it.
Love y'all!
Lisa in AR
I hope your surgery goes very well and that you have a quick recovery.
My husband encountered a couple PTs who pushed him and nagged at him more than he was ready for ... it did not go well. Fortunately, they shifted him over to PTs who were much more gentle and that went a lot better. He's seeing one now for his vestibular disorder issues who is great. He's so impressed and says he is feeling much better ... less dizzy when he does certain things. If you get a good one, they're wonderful.
I'm planning to take it fairly easy this weekend. I was going to try cycling because my PT (who discovered all this with my hip) reluctantly said I might be able to cycle a little tiny bit, but I am tired, and I do have lots of sit-down paperwork stuff to do, and my hip and leg do feel better when I'm not exercising these days, so I might just give the hip and leg a rest.
In answer to a couple other questions:
My PT has recommended a bone density scan, but first we'll do this MRI.
I am not on ant-inflammatories because there is some evidence they inhibit bone growth/healing. So I'm on Panadol.Let's see...about my MIL. Yes, we finally got her safely moved into a beautiful assisted living center. She is in the "memory unit" of the center. She has her own "apartment" that is basically a 20x20 room with bed, room for dresser and a couple of recliners, tv, closet, sink, mini fridge, cupboards and bathroom. She is able to bring in her own furniture, artwork, etc. We had it all set up for her by the time she moved in. She picked out what she wanted to bring with her. As of right now, she is happy and content to be there and seems at peace with the idea. The center is set up like a little "village" and within one building there are seven restaurants, a grocery store, a gift shop, a clothing shop, a movie theater, an art room, mechanical shop room, exercise room, chapel... She is wears a tracker for the memory unit, and is allowed to move about the entire place. Their bracelet "tracker" helps the staff keep track of them and they can also be scanned if they want to purchase anything.
My grandmother was in a similar type of place in Lower Mainland BC for a little over a year until she started to deteriorate. It was really nice. She had a little L-shaped studio apartment, with the bed in the short arm of the L and the living/kitchen in the long arm of the L. They had a large dining room where they could eat with others, or they could have evening meals ordered up to the room. I think the rest of the meals were up to them, so she had bread for a sandwich, cereal, milk, etc. in her little kitchen.
Your MIL's place sounds bigger, with a few more features. That's really good.Snowflake1968 wrote: »

I hope something comes up for you soon.Heading to the doc this morning to get allergy shots plus have her take a look at a spot on my nose which is quite small but grows and continually red and kind of flakes off. I'm sure it's nothing but both my dad and my grandmother had skin cancers on their noses so if all it needs right now is a touch of dry ice, I reckon now's the time. She might just tell me to keep an eye on it and do nothing which is OK too. I have the first appointment in the morning before the really sick people arrive.
When I was in there last week, my nurse said she never gets flu shots, doesn't believe in them for HER. Since it's a private clinic, the docs don't pressure the employees. I thought that was interesting.

When I was getting my allergy shots, my Dr always did them early, before all the really sick people arrived too.
And yes, do get your nose checked.
I got a flu shot last winter for the first time in years, and for the first time in years, I didn't get much of a flu in August/September like I usually do. It was enough to make me think I'll do it again this coming winter.
I decided to get it because I was in the hospital every day visiting my husband. They had given one to him and then strongly hinted I should get one too.

Did Jari Love Revved to the Max DVD. Originally, I was going to take the water class tomorrow but a friend is going to South Carolina and I’d like to go with her, only she needs to leave early in the a.m. so I’ll just do some HIIT
Had Newcomer bowling tonight. Honestly, I was surprised at how many people who were at that board meeting we had yesterday expressed their agreement in how I felt.
Sue – happy birthday! This one gal at ceramics is going to SC and I’ll go with her just to see this one place and maybe buy some paint. Our place no longer carries it, and I thought it would be really nice on the hats for the gnomes
Volunteered at the Green Room today. See, I changed times with this one gal, I’d do the morning shift and she’d do the afternoon. Only she forgot to write it down on her calendar at home so she made other plans. I went to the local community college’s cosmetology school for a chin wax (it’s pretty cheap there), then back to the Green Room. I did need to leave at 3 even tho the next gal wasn’t there yet. After the Green Room went to the Y to give the gal who lets me go in for free a birthday cake since I’ll be away for her birthday. Then went to another gym to pay my membership (I honestly thought it was due in Feb), then Big Lots to buy bread for Vince (they finally had some), then to the vet to see about different food for Lexi. Then home for dinner and Newcomer bowling tonight.
At the cosmetology school, they only have on-street parking. I do not like parallel parking. But I did learn that it’s a bit easier with the backup camera. You know when you’re getting close to the other car
Kylia – great news about Aubrey!
Barbie – I’m so distressed to hear that you are sick. Please get better fast
As far as the shower, I’ve sort-of decided that for the favors, I’ll make “dooty diapers” which are a napkin folded in the shape of a diaper and you put these chocolate/oatmeal cookies in them, I’ll get some Chips Ahoy and put a tag that says “ahoy, it’s a boy”, a tea bag with a tag that says “a baby is brewing – expected delivery 5-12-19”, a bag of popcorn with a tag that says “about to pop” and a bottle of nail polish with a tag that says “here is to 10 little fingers and 10 little toes”.
I’m thinking that I’ll make a “cake” out of diapers. Then for Pete I’d like to get a “daddy tool kit” and in it I’ll put a few marbles, some toothpicks, a rubber band, an eraser, a tootsie roll, some Tylenol, a rubber ducky, nose plugs, tongs, rubber gloves, a face mask, some baby wipes, antibacterial hand lotion, goggles, a clothespin, and a shiny penny. I think that’ll be enough I wonder if I can have the writing on the cake say “from beer bottles to baby bottles”
Pip – good luck on your run
Kelly – ANOTHER day to yourself!
Was out most of the day so I’m thinking that I should spend the night with Shadow. Also, this way I can get up earlier and go workout.
Rori – so excited for you! We need details about the car!!!! Color, etc.

Grace- omg! Our struggles are the same! I am 5'2" currently at 124.6. Small frame. My highest not pregnant weight was 155 about 11 years ago. I cried a lot! I was always under 100 except when pregnant. I thought I looked good at 135 nine years ago until I saw my honeymoon pictures. I joined MFP about 8 years ago. My goal at almost 56 yo is 112-115. I was at 116 for a year, then got curve balled with surgeries and life and crept back up to 135. I struggled in the 130's for 6-8 months. Finally broke into the 120s in 2018. My goal was to be 120 by September. I started vacation at 119.9. I was so excited! Came back in October from vacation and business trip to chaos with work and family. Again got overwhelmed and was quickly approaching that 130 again. I started 2019 at almost 128. I am down almost 4 pounds. So let me share what has been working for me. Water, water, water! The struggle is real as I am content with 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning and maybe one glass of water a day. I have managed at least 8 glasses of water all but 1 day since Christmas. 10,000 steps a day with at least 30 minutes being intentional walking. While I try to get that 30 minutes in in the morning, other times it is at night (like tonight). It is 35 steps around my hallway, dining room, and kitchen circle. My CICO seems pretty good. I try to get at least 1300 per day. I still have some candies, but find myself choose most days. Good stuff in small amounts goes a long way. I eat what I want but pay attention to portion sizes.
Just my story....sorry got long....but wanted to share. Whether we lose 20 lbs or 200 lbs, my understanding is the body will fight more the closer to goal you are! These ladies have all been and are on incredible journeys and share great insights.
I had to stop reading to reply to Grace. Now can go back to reading. Thanks for listening!

I will figure out my wins for January and goals for February in the morning. Thank you Barbie for starting our new month!
Prayers, hugs, high fives!
Kylia1 -
So for January
*step goal every day (80%)
But walked 348,317 steps!
Averaged. 11, 236 per day!
December I only averaged 5478!
* water goal every day (90%)
* keep macro facts at or below 40%
(58%)- oops definitely need to pay
more attention!
*30 mins intentional exercise a day
(83%)
I think I will keep the same goals since I lost almost 4 lbs this wee!
Kylia6 -
I had to look at this one a couple times to see it.
M in Oz6 -
Thanks, Barbie, for getting us started once again. Sincerest wishes for a speedy recovery!
I have not been setting goals for myself for several months now, and not much has been happening on the scale. Coincidence? I think not. So on that note, my goals for Feb:
1. LOG, LOG, LOG!!
2. some form of exercise every day
3. to be lighter on March 1 than on Feb 1.
I think that will do for this month, don't want to overwhelm myself! Just have time for a few comments, really must go to bed soon, work tomorrow, so no sleeping in!
Kylia, so happy to hear that baby Audrey is doing so well!
Lisa, thinking nothing but good thoughts for your surgery and so very happy to hear that your new job is going so well! Sounds like this group realizes what a treasure you truly are! So sad to hear about the loss of your new colleague. My heart goes out to her children also.
Rori, excited for you for the new car!
Machka, I do hope you do not have a hip fracture, although it certainly sounds like you might. Very smart to take it easy for a bit, let things heal. Whatever the issue is, you will heal faster if you don't push too far too fast (but you know that!).
Heather, glad to hear that you are feeling a bit better, not fun when you cough so much that you can't get much needed rest!
Kelly, glad to hear that you are getting a snow day too! You deserve a day or two off!
For all of you in the cold, cold areas, (and the snowy ones!) please stay safe and warm! We are supposed to get a cold snap here too, not as cold as some of you are experiencing, but colder than I like! Hubby and I were just talking a few nights ago how we weren't sad that there hadn't been any snow yet this year, now it looks like we could be getting some. Our city is not equipped for snow, and our drivers, for the most part, are also not equipped for snow. And then you get a few yahoos in their 4 wheel drive vehicles (with summer tires on, thank you very much) and they figure they can just jump on the gas pedal and go wherever. It doesn't always end well..... Oh well, not much I can do about it! Just have to hope that I can stay out of their way!
Hugs for those needing them, congrats to those celebrating (birthdays, anniversaries, and lost pounds!) and welcome to the newbies!
Evelyn, Vancouver Island5 -
Thank you so much Barbie. This group is such a big part of my life.
It snowed last night, but it's melting this morning. We have got off lightly compared to other areas.
I slept for over five hours and dozed for another. My constant companion through this illness has been the Andrew Roberts biography of Winston Churchill which I bought for DH for our wedding anniversary. He read it first.
When I was so ill with food poisoning in Mexico my companion was the Rebus detective books. I read about four of them.
So one's illness gets attached to a particular experience with a book, which becomes your whole world. The long, lonely nights take on the flavour of the book. Last night I was at the Yalta Conference.
I am very grateful to have a room I can retreat to where I can read and cough and moan and groan without disturbing my husband.
The fact that I am reading the biography does not by any means signify my approval of WC. I'm not going to go into politics, or morals here, but I thought I should say that, in case anyone thinks I am an apologist for him. I am enjoying the book though.
Another day of doing the bare minimum. I may be able to venture up to the local shops this afternoon. I haven't been outside for a week. Haven't weighed myself. I have cut back on calories by cutting out dessert, chocolate and cheese, so I'm hoping not to have done too much damage. Still haven't washed my hair. It looks like stringy, greasy, rats tails.
Watching the weather forecast with interest to see if my friend's 93 year old father is going to be able to fly down from Newcastle for their cruise tomorrow. It's cutting it a bit fine! They will be on our lovely old ship for its second to last cruise. Jealous! I really hope they make it on board ok. He is also only partially sighted. Big responsibility for her. I will be following her blog - Dad's Cruise - with great interest. It's a real gift of love from her to him.

Thank you, Barbie, for making this place for us even when you weren't feeling up to snuff, and thank you all for being here. I don't respond to everything or everyone, and much as I love y'all, not sure I could. I did try at the beginning, until it got overwhelming, and I'm fairly sure there weren't as many people five years ago as there are now! Well, April will be five years. And no, my MFP streak doesn't show it, but I had to change usernames.
My January goal was to lose weight again this year (I lost 35 pounds last year), and I'm actually one pound lighter this morning than I was at the beginning of January, at 181 pounds. Too bad I can't count the five pounds that I've lost at least three times this month and put them right back on! But... I'm lighter than I was at the beginning of January, and I'll take that.
My word of the year is/was "respect," and I've found it interesting how many times it's occurred to me and (possibly) changed my behavior across the course of this month. I'm thinking it's definitely the right head-space for me this year. Respect for myself, respect for others, respect for the process. It's been quite beneficial.
Rori - the new car sounds fun, glad you found the one you wanted!
Heather - glad you're feeling better!
Machka - you're in the space I hate to be in most - where the unknowns start piling up. I hope the resolutions to all are positive and easily resolved wherever possible. It has to make your husband feel good that he was able to help you out by getting some assistance for you (the cane). I'm glad that, moment by moment, inch by inch, you're getting your partner back.
My February goal - get through the knee surgery and make it to March lighter (even if it's only a pound!) and stronger, faster, and in less pain.
Love y'all!
Lisa in AR4 -
Thank you Barbie, for bringing us into February, even though you feel yucky! Get rest and feel better soon!
AFter my five pound gain over the holidays, I am only one pound down for January. But I will own that pound. Less is better than more in this case. My morning shoveling this week has been a good work out. Maybe I will have a loss when I weigh in on Monday...I think I will start setting up my workout clothes next to my shoveling gear at night; so that if there is no snow on the drive, I will dress for a work out and get on the treadmill. If I can make the time to shovel; I can certainly make the time for a work out. Since the heavy snow began, I haven't been able to walk with the kids, so I need to do this.
Goals for February:
drink more water
log every bite
either shovel or treadmill every morning
make healthy choices
enjoy the weather
Suebdew- Just in case you missed Lanette's post; SWSY is the book Strong Women Stay Young. I am sure you are probably smacking yourself in the head for not thinking of it, because we talk about that book and the others so often. lol But I did that, too. Saw the abbreviation and my mind went blank and I had to back track to figure it out.
Michele- I love all of your baby shower ideas. It is going to be wonderful and a lot of fun!
To all of the ladies so close to goal- No judgement here. I think losing weight is hard no matter where you are in the process. AND, I really think that once you reach a "certain" age it gets really hard. Our bodies seem to want to hold onto every last pound and ounce. As I struggle just to get into Onederland, I also know that when I get closer to my goal weight I am going to have to push harder to get to goal. It is like a marathon. I think as you get closer to the finish line, your body is ready to call it quits and you have to dig deep and push and sometimes drag yourself to that line.
Heather dear- Yea! Five hours of sleep in one chunk! Yes! So great that your "cold/flu brain" is allowing you to read a book while you convalesce. Sending you vibes of chicken soup and lots of hugs! Feel better!
Time for me to fly. The main roads are clear, but schools are closed due to the cold temps. So I will have 5 of my usual 6 kids, plus Trentin will be here all day until about 9:30 tonight. They are forecasting rain for the weekend, then a freeze again on Tuesday. Tuesday morning roads will be a nightmare. I don't know why people get excited about warm temps in the winter. It will just freeze up and create icy chaos. The ice is when trees go down, power lines go down, etc. I'll keep the cold weather, thank you very much! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Thank you, Barbie, for getting our wonderful February thread started.
My word for 2019 is Serenity.
I am realizing, to my consternation, that I am the biggest obstacle in the way of attaining Serenity.
My main failings? Procrastination, Perfectionism, and Prioritizing.
I bit off a bigger word than I realized.

Barbie - thanks for launching us into February, coats and boots and all!
Pip- always love seeing your pix of you and Kirby and your puppies. Good luck on the Viaduct run. Dress warmly! You might need snow tires on your bike next week....
OK, doc said the spot on my nose was a pre-cancerous lesion so she froze it with dry ice. This morning I have a big blister on the bridge of my nose. She said when it heals, that spot will be lighter than the rest of my face.
We talked about my thawing frozen shoulder - and my blood pressure is up significantly. She said she didn't want to start me back on BP meds because of the strong anti-inflammatory I am on and the effect they both have on kidneys. So I didn't take my Celebrex last night and hopefully can get along without it just fine. Also will cut back on salt and hopefully BP will get back into the acceptable range. I'm to have my BP taken weekly when I go in for my allergy shots.
Stay warm!

Wow! Thank you so much for responding! Just what I needed! I realized one thing this morning after reviewing yesterday’s horrible food intake. I keep telling myself I can just have a little to eat instead of a meal and I will be fine for a few hours but that’s not true. So I go for empty calories, yesterday was popcorn, Doritos and convince myself that’s going to tide me over(rationalizing the junk). What I really needed was a good meal with protein and flavor. I had almost 500 calories of junk yesterday and I know if I’d just had a good solid lunch I would not have caved to the junk. So just finished my first meal today of meatballs and sweet peppers and baby carrots(leftovers from last night). Had one water(heading out for a while so not doing more until back home). Should be good for 3-4 hours. Also today is day five of no added sugar. Only sugar this week has been my daily allotted homemade sweetened iced coffee and vanilla organic yogurt twic.

found the run is supposed to have around 25 thousand peeps. gonna be a busy one. supposed to be an 8k (4.97mi). i'm just going to run with kirby, i won't run ahead of him like i did for the 1/2 marathon. i felt so bad, that was a mistake.
i took it easy yesterday and taking it even easier today. recharging the muscles for tomorrow. some of the run will be in a tunnel so that will be cool, need to make sure we don't overdress. we may start out cold but won't be that way for long.
HUGS to all that need them
CONGRATS to all with your achievements
I'M SORRY for bad news, injuries, struggles that you're going thru
HAPPYYYYY BDAYYYYYY to all that i missed
work is getting scarier and scarier. found out they wrote up a person that is in the payments department. along with the other two that were recently fired, those were peeps that i worked with for as long as i had been with the other company before this company acquired their seller finance portfolio. i started in 9/2010 with the other company and then came over to this one along with the other two that were let go and now this one got written up and found out another one got written up in the payoffs team... it feels like, are they like going thru everyones actions with a fine tooth comb then writing them up? i keep telling myself. 2 more years from my bday, i'm almost there. kirby says this is like a marathon, we're on the last stretch.. i did have an honest talk with one of the big wigs and told her (she used to work for the other company too) and told her i have always been honest with you when you ask my opinion. now i'm not so sure, cuz if i do, it may come back to bite me in the *kitten* later. i told her people here either like you or hate you. i told her i don't have an issue with you.... yet..... I was really crying when they let go this one person in particular...
train your employees well enough to leave
treat them well enough that they won't want to
