2019 GOAL: Knock a full hour off my 50k time at Glacier Ridge.

Snuck out at lunchtime and knocked out 7 miles at (well below) race pace. My only real goals were to make it back in time for my meeting (doubly so since I was presenting) and to keep at a faster than 1 hour 10k pace. 7 miles in 1:01 I think completes that.

I might get another run in later, but Tuesdays are always very busy so I can not count on that.

The run was a bit annoying in that I had to wear a jacket to start, then got hot took it off, then go cold and put it back on, repeat for the entire run. Could not find a balance.

Thanks for the encouragement @MobyCarp @Scott6255 and @PastorVincent! I know that you guys are right. This has been an unconventional approach to training for me and I am still wondering if I did enough! But I got this!

Treadmill warm-up before circuit training this morning. Per usual, did not arrive at the gym early enough despite my good intentions. I had to hustle at the end to make it to 2 miles, because I really didn't want to have to put just 1-something in my log sheet.

We did a pulling and pushing workout this morning. Much improvement on the monkey bars, which was exciting.

I still feel like I'm a long ways from where I was last year, but I am trying to remain positive about my 3 races next month.

Today's 11.33 miles was a pretty good pace for now, but still much slower than I would like.

Nominal March mileage goal: 200 miles

Real Goals: Train well toward Boston. Cut back before St. Patrick’s Day weekend, run the 8K hard, use the half as a training race. Remain uninjured, even if it means cutting back on planned mileage.

Today's notes – I spent some time thinking about what I wanted to do for speed work today. There were various workouts on different versions of the marathon training plan; the one on canned version I've been loosely following called for 3 x 2 miles at T with 2 minutes recovery. I didn't think I was up to that.

I settled on a workout from last week on a posted Boston plan: 10 continual miles consisting of 2 easy, 2 at T, 2 easy, 2 at T, 2 easy. Instead of going to the talk at club practice, I used the first 2 miles of the workout as my warmup and went right into continual running.

I ran the paces mostly by feel, without strict control from the watch. Strict control would have had T pace at a 6:35 to 6:45 per mile on the roads, easy at 7:40 to 8:00. Actual achieved mile splits were:

Easy 7:47, 7:33
T 6:40, 6:36
Easy 7:31, 7:31
T 6:31, 6:27 (?!)
Easy 7:33, 8:11

The last mile included a 1000m XC practice loop, and part of the trail had been damaged by cyclists. So that was slower than running on the grass would have been. It seems that my body wants to fall into something closer to marathon pace than a true easy pace; that's not all that bad a thing, with the most important marathon of the year 20 days away.

Got back to base, had a chat with Coach and a new guy. Saw that the board had a workout for Boston: 2 x 3 miles at T with 3 minutes recovery, then 4 x 50m strides. I was not up to running 6 miles of T today. 4 miles was enough. Less is more.

Looking ahead, it's fairly easy to plan out the miles I'll run between now and when I travel to Boston. The interesting part of the puzzle is the speed work. I actually could do next week's challenging workout; but it's a step up from what I did today, while being a step down from what the plan called for today. I probably should tone it down to be modestly easier than what I ran today. I have a week to figure it out.

Three miles on the treadmill (more than that per Garmin), followed by myrtl, bridges, stretching and a bit of foam rolling. Eccentric heel drops daily, though less sets today than in previous days.

I'm not going to make my goal of 30 miles for this month, but I won't be too far off.

In non running news - It looks like I may have found a radiographer to take my job when I leave, who would also be willing to rent our house for a few months on the off chance it takes more than 3-4 months to sell. She cant start till toward the end of June, so I've emailed the place I'm hoping to get a job to say, change of plans, looks like I can come beginning of July, can I apply for a job with that as the start date. Should be interesting to see what happens... Life can be funny like that. Things just slotting into place. Oh and this lady worked here when I was on maternity leave, and was well liked and respected so she will be welcomed with open arms.

8 muddy, slushy, stomp in ice cold puddles, slip on your *kitten*, fall on your knees, and still have a great time trail miles.

Kody & I started the run just as the sun was going down and ran the entire route with no headlamp, which may have contributed to my tumbles. I love trail running in the dark but yeah, it comes with risks and it makes it a little more challenging and going down those steep muddy hills can be treacherous without light. No matter, it was a fun run and there was only a little blood.

After I got home I tossed my shoes. They were Lone Peaks with just 255 miles on them but the upper was starting to split and Altra has already replaced them under warranty. They a bit too small for me and rub the ends of my toes. I also decided it would really sick if they fully split far from the parking lot.

There's a lot of miles to go in 5 days to reach my goal but if I follow my plan, I'll just make it.

Rest day yesterday, then back to 4.5 miles on a beautiful evening tonight. I tossed in some fartleks, which were fun. As far as I can tell, the first Hal Higdon novice HM plan seems to call for most miles being easy conversational pace, but I figured a few fartleks on the least taxing run of the week might be ok. It feels easier to run “easy” when I occasionally do other things like fartleks (otherwise the “easy” starts to feel tedious, particularly when I can ruminate about work challenges at the same time, which I am incapable of doing when running faster intermittently) My hope is to keep my base high enough after the HM to incorporate some speedwork.

Been struggling to get out in the mornings for runs, that phase of my life might be over for now. I cancelled my Crossfit membership, as I'm not going enough (the thyroid issues I'm slowly getting better on are making it a real struggle to do evening stuff) but I'm thinking of a MoveGB membership instead. Basically what that is is a membership of every single gym and activity you can think of. So one payment, and I can do yoga, swing dancing, climbing, crossfit, all without having to be a specific member of a specific location. There are some restrictions on classes, but nothing too onerous.

That aside, we've entered Spring here in the UK, definitely and completely (this week certainly). The weather was so nice there's no way I could contemplate a crossfit class (see?) so I pulled out the gear I am cunningly storing in my car, and went for a run on a cycle track near work.

Now it's a guesstimate as to how far I went, but seriously - can I only manage 4 miles in under an hour? hmm. MUST. RUN. MORE.

i get to belong to the young widows club. another friend committed suicide this weekend so we have a new member. haven't been sleeping so haven't been able to garner enough energy for a run

@simcon11 fartlek means speed play and i do find a good session can be nice indeed
