It's finally warm enough for me to wear my lighter weight jacket and not the winter one. I'll take the dogs out after breakfast without their coats.
We are registered with a company called MEDCURE. When my friend's husband died, they came to her house and picked up her husband for use in medical research then paid for his cremation and returned his ashes to her. She spread them at a location of her choice.
I have no sentimental attachment to visiting the final resting place of my loved ones. I went once to where my maternal grandparents are buried in New York as part of an afternoon adventure with my cousin whose parents are buried in the same location. When my sister died in 1966, my parents bought a four person plot and later my father (in 1988), then my mother (in 1991) were buried beside her. The only time I visited their graves was for the next funeral. We later gave the fourth plot to Jake's son because we planned to be cremated and had moved out of state. I pay homage to my loved ones every time I make use of some lesson I've learned from them.

Barbie, was your sister very young when she died? I was 12 years old in 1966, and my sister was 15.

Checking out the news for the day. Was a bit stiff this am after yard work yesterday, but treadmill, stretches and my little weight routine and hot shower this am seemed to take care of it. Busy at work, but not at what I wanted to get done. Hopefully finish two projects tomorrow morning. Have a conference out of town Wednesday though Friday, so office time limited.
Didn't need the steps for goal, but was so darned pleasant after work I had to go outside for a walk before dinner. That made three 30 or so minute walks today (treadmill before work, 30 minutes at lunch and then tonight). What still amazes me is that I have the energy for it. Movement energizes me and I think my head is clearer. That's a great benefit from this.
The talk of funeral decisions and body donations hit home with me. My husband signed up to be an organ donor. Wasn't sure what parts they could harvest, but later received a letter that his donations of various things had helped 55 people. That is amazing to me (bones, skin, eyes, etc.) We had a church funeral with "rental" casket and then he was cremated. Put his ashes in a place he had told me he would liked them placed. I too am not much of cemetery visitor. It felt good following through with his wishes.
Have a good rest of the day wherever you are.

Lanette: I just put myself to the test and I was able to get up from the floor without using my hands to help. I sat cross-legged and was able to roll up to my knees and then stand up, hands free. I usually do the hands and knees first, but this discussion motivated me to try. I agree that being born is a 100% predictor of death at some time or another. Our driver’s licenses show that we are organ donors. If we have anything that is wanted or needed, we’re happy to share. Our plan is to have our ashes scattered from the cliffside at the Oregon Coast where we were married. We plan to take the ashes our deceased pets with us when we’re scattered there.
Rita: Happy to have you check in, and happy for you. You seem to be enjoying life.
Karen in VA: I sympathize with your twelve-year-old self. I was thirteen when my favorite cousin was killed in a car wreck. My parents wouldn’t let me attend the funeral although every other cousin in my generation was there and so were many of Susie’s classmates. I’m still angry with my parents for that. My adult-self understands they were trying to protect me, but that was impossible and being left out of the chance to say goodbye was hurtful. Old wounds can leave scars. Unfortunately, her older brother was later killed in Viet Nam. He was the nicest person I’ve ever known and I will always miss them both..
On a cheerier note, my 20th birthday witnessed the first US moon landing on July 20, 1969, AND our only personal sighting of a California Condor that same year off the Oregon Coast.

Katla - bravo! You are truly agile and your yoga and flexibility are paying off! The AARP article wasn't real specific other than saying going from sitting on the floor to standing w/o using hands. If they were talking about how these young gals go from sit to stand, then mortality is nipping at my heels!

Happy International No Diet Day!
"International No Diet Day is dedicated to body acceptance and focuses on body shape diversity and fat acceptance. Mary Evans Young had dealt with anorexia nervosa and had been bullied for being fat at a young age. In adulthood, she began working to help others accept their bodies. ... The day has various goals regarding health and weight. It promotes a healthy lifestyle and highlights that someone can be healthy regardless of their size. It raises the question, 'Is there such thing as a 'right' body shape?' It brings forward dangers about dieting... Awareness is raised about weight discrimination and there is a focus on eradicating it. The day honors those who have struggled with eating disorders or who have gone through weight-loss surgery. Finally, it is a day to be free of diets and to not worry about body weight." It's been a long struggle and while I can't say I don't think about food more often than I'd like, I do think I've reached the point where I am not on a "diet" and that makes me feel much more optimistic about being able to reach my goals.
Ginny - Congratulations on getting all that yard work done! Maybe you'll inspire me to do the same... I also have a hard time with heat, and we've reached the time of year when I can't step outside my door without dousing myself with DEET so I've been avoiding it. But it's just going to get hotter out there so I'm not doing myself any favors by putting it off!
Barbie - I admire your discipline. I've been trying to establish a meditation habit but I'm SO distractable. I tried setting a timer but then when it's time to sit down and meditate I find something else to do more often than not.
Today I got back on the ski machine for the first time since I sprained my ankle. I only went for half an hour, but since we're hoping to be able to go skiing next February it was good to get back into the rhythm. By the end of the summer I'll need to start adding some incline to get as ready as I can before I have to do the real thing at altitude!
We have a busy few weeks coming up. This week my nephew is (finally!) graduating with his bachelor's degree so we'll be pulling the RV up to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for his commencement. Then my sister will be staying with us for a few days while she works on an event for her job, and the day she leaves we'll be heading out to Burning Flipside. I'm just trying to be organized about it so I can prepare without getting stressed out.

Kelly - I had to laugh out loud, literally at your mattress topper story. Sort of like the old waterbeds. They weren’t very good for sex either and I was a young person then!
Viv - sorry to hear about your Mom’s fall. Will your Father think of moving downstairs now after today? I hope she does leave his washing to the carers, can they be there earlier?
Heather - happy anniversary. I think it’s wonderful you celebrate the day you met. I know I met my husband in 1982, but I don’t know the exact date. I was wearing a white bathing suit in the local pool. Guess what caught his eye? 😂
Barbie - I like that you don’t pay homage by going to their graves. I feel guilty if I’m home and don’t go, but I talk about them all the time and have their pictures out and treasure items they made for me.
Lanette - I agree with you about headstones. My Dad was cremated per his wishes, but I had a stillborn sister that was buried in the same plot as what was purchased for my parents when she died. So we buried his ashes with her and we will do the same for my Mom. My sister had a little piece of stone in the ground that had sunk over the years so we have Dad, mom and Lorna all on the one headstone now.
Katla - I understand how angry you can be for not being able to attend a funeral. I wasn’t allowed to attend my Grandfather’s because I was too young, yet when my other Grandfather died I wouldn’t let me girls go either. I understand it from both sides now.
I made two cards for Mother’s Day today. I wish I knew how to post a video on here. One is a pop up card and a picture just doesn’t do it justice. I applied for two other jobs today both at nursing homes. They are both within walking distance for me.
I found out that Brodey’s family is having a shower for them on the 18th of May so I am going down to Calgary with them for it. His Mother will be flying in from Brandon for it. I’m very excited. I love his Mother she is a lovely woman. She is much older than me, closer to my parents age than mine. She says they had kids during their mid-life crisis instead of buying cars and the cars would have been paid for sooner.
Have a nice evening

I think it’s so awesome that you take time to respond to everyone. You really care. ❤️2 -
Barbie. I'm so sorry about your 19-year-old sister. That's incredibly sad.
_______
Katla Didn't mean to confuse you with my post. My sister who was 15 years old in 1966 (the year Barbie's sister was killed in a MVA) died in 2000 when she was 49.
I'm sorry your parents made that decision about you going to your cousin's funeral. They were wrong to try to shield you. Your parents underestimated your ability to handle the death, and the need to go to the funeral and fully grieve with others who shared your love of your cousin. (((Hug)))

Wishing all y’all well!
Little has changed here. Lots of challenges and difficulties especially financial which seem insurmountable but cuddling with kitties helps lift spirits.
Weight is doing pretty well, within 7 pounds of my lowest last spring. Exercise is at the minimums ( 2 x week swsy and 2 x lap swims) but steady.
Husband had a big health scare this spring but a silver lining: he is picking up his exercise and eating better.
Anyway just wanted to say hi and wish everyone the best.

Rebecca, the City of Langley owns the cemetery. They can get you to the right department. I think there is even something on their web site about it.
By the way, I love the little Footsie flowers. I think I’ll call them “toe-lips”.
Ginny! Wow! That sounds like a lovely way to get a lot of exercise. Gardening ranks up there with housework on calories burned. Do you log your exercise as well as your food?
I’m glad you received the news of how many the donation of your husband’s body helped. Folks, check that spot on your drivers license renewal application to be a donor. They will take as much or as little as you prefer.
Katla and Barbie AHMOD, Metracal worked great for me. One swallow and I’d throw up. Something about the taste. I’m the same way with buttermilk, although I love regular and Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream and almost any cheese. My late husband couldn’t see why. “They’re all rotten milk in one way or another!” Really helped me get over nausea from trying to see if I’d grown to like buttermilk yet. Periodically I try foods I hadn’t cared for before just to see. After all, I used to loathe green olives and jalapeños too.
KJ (Kelly), i didn’t know whether to hit “like” or “inspiring” or “insightful” for your post. Too bad they don’t have a laughing face one. I’m reminded of trying to introduce my (later) husband to my water bed. Hilarity ensued, but not much else. I sleep alone nowadays, alas, but I do love my memory foam mattress. I don’t know if my fibromyalgia or my arthritis loves it more. I fall asleep too quickly to figure it out!
Lisa in AR, my introduction to stretch marks was when I began to develop breasts. I was in a C Cup by the time I was 12, and at the time I was only minimally overweight, if that. I expanded to an overflowing DD and I I finally had reduction surgery in 1983. I’ve been a happy C cupper ever since. I hated the fact that my bosom entered a classroom on time when the rest of me was late.
Heather in UK, you and your husband sound like you’re delightfully attuned to one another.
Angelique, i hope you feel included whether I mention you by name or not. I often go off on a tangent when replying to someone, and what I say is meant for everyone who can take some joy, insight, or laughter from it.
I have had a zero energy day today. I had a great time yesterday at my first ever Bunco game and Cinco de Mayo potluck at a friend’s house. I had to park up the street a ways. There were 20 of us and the area isn’t known for lots of parking spaces. I tried a little of almost everything, including some lovely flan for dessert, but kept my portions very small, and brought my own fruit flavored water, since I don’t drink anyway. It was great fun, and I made nodding acquaintances with a fun bunch of women.
I am truly lonely since my “running buddy”, as in “running around” died suddenly a year after my husband. She was a child of an alcoholic mother, and had spent a good part of her life involved with alcohol and drugs, but when she grew older, she left that life and was happily married until her husband died suddenly the same year mine did. Kat never developed the normal filters that tell you what’s normal to talk about with others. I was with her on one VERY memorable occasion when she overheard someone talking about what had ailed her husband while at a pancake house. She began a conversation with them, and all went fine until she mentioned that one of the side effects for him was erectile dysfunction. Conversation halted abruptly. I was able to telegraph to her “TMI, Kat!”
She was unforgettable and a load of fun. Most days she’d call me or I’d call her and ask “You want some coffee?” An hour or so of talk and laughter and good coffee and I’d be set for the day. Good women friends are a necessity to me. Thank you for being my friends.

ginny, how nice about the weather and the 3 walks. I agree about head being clearer that way. that's amazing that they give you letter about how much his donations helped. I knew that they could cremate people after viewing in casket, but I didn't know it could be a rental, though that makes sense.
Katia I'm so sorry about your cousins
Yvonne I had never heard of a ski machine.
Tracey how sweet to make pop up cards. wishing you luck on the local jobs. walking distance to work sounds like a dream.
Barbie I'm sorry about your sister.
Rye I'm so sorry about your financial challenges. I can relate somewhat.
Sharon, I'm so sorry you have lost so many people dear to you of late. An hour or so daily of talk and laughter with a good friend sounds like a real gift.
Connie I'm ready for the semester to end too.
Elizabeth nice vacation movement, woohoo for your goals
Lanette that's a weird note about getting up off the floor and mortality rate. sounds like a narrow scope if I have ever heard one - only one criteria taken into consideration
It's unseasonably cold (40s at 9am) but sunny here. I'm slow to start today. Could just stay in bed for hours, warm and cozy.

Thankfully mum is just a bit sore today after her fall yesterday, nothing a few painkillers can't cure, she said she is giving my dad a wide berth today (I think he forgets that mum isn't as young as she used to be and is not steady on her feet) he did try to apologise when she told him he'd pushed her, but he didn't remember doing it.
I have been busy decluttering again and managed to purge some DVDs that were given free with the newspapers years ago, (my hubby used to collect them), but they are not ones I particularly want to watch so I'll put them in the charity bag. This frees a bit of space in a cupboard, but not sure whether to use it or take it off the wall.
Happy Anniversary Heather. How funny that you bought each other almost identical cards, you will have to show us your sea horse broach.
I'd better get to the shops, looks like the sun is coming out - I might get some washing on the line to dry today after all.
Love to all

Rye - good to see you post! Sorry about the financial issues--they weigh on us, and are stressful, glad you're continuing your own healthy path.
Rita - glad you checked in, and am happy seeing you happy and busy. I remember when you first began with us, and it's lovely to see you this way.
To the person who noted it, yes, the niggling health issue has become... something that's keeping me home most of the time. I am hoping the doctor's visit on Friday will see me getting some of the symptoms under control with medication, but I have my doubts they will give medication at the visit. As it's not life-threatening, I am afraid they will want to do the tests first, which can take weeks with the VA. We'll see how it goes. It's certainly quality-of-life threatening, but not like I'm going to croak over, just uncomfortable, embarrassing and depressing.
All that said, everything else is going along just fine. Work is fine, home life is fine, my weight is staying stable, which is at least not going up, and I'm fine with that for the moment.
Busy morning coming up. Happy Tuesday, all, past, present or future.
Love,
Lisa in AR4 -
Viv hope your Mum's fall has the good result of her leaving Dad's bathing to the carers, and that bruises are the worst of it. My Mama fired all the home health care workers the first week, "it was too much trouble to get him ready for them" then took care of Papa for his last 17 wheelchair bound years, but it took a terrible toll.
Lanette I shook my head when I read the same AARP item. Two years ago one of the trainers at the fitness center demonstrated getting up without use of hands, like the cross legged gals in your video. Then she had me kneel next to a chair and bracing myself with one hand, stand up using first one leg, then the other. Never progressed and now do it Baby Style as your Dr. recommends. Several times a day? Another motivation to get down on the floor, meditate and do those knee exercises, but like Yvonne I can always finds something else to do... ;{
Katla thanks for the idea of taking the ashes of our deceased pets with us. Still haven't managed to have this chat with Joe, but as Scooter's time is growing near, we'll be adding one more to the collection and that may be an opportune time.
Tracey I had the same waterbed flashback
Welcome Angelique!

Kate I too was missing Penny, especially Sunday at a performance by our local chorale. Would love to hear an audio of hers.
Shannon thanks for the update, know you've been working hard at preparing. Sending healing vibes for quick complete recovery.
Lisa sure hope your MD gets you some relief quick!
Feeling low and sad. My difficult friend passed this morning at 05:30 EDT. Know he suffered both pain and embarrassment, he's been "terminal" (aren't we all) for at least the past 2 years, but even when expected, it's hard to take. Have been sad for a week, Scooter was doing so poorly after his dental that we scheduled an at home euthanasia. He's bounced back, mostly, so we'll put it off, but know the time is coming. Dang, this love stuff hurts!

Rye - I'm very happy to see you posting. I was wondering how you were getting on. I hate financial worries. I used to have them a lot and felt desperate.
Lanette - that exercise of getting up from a cross legged position is almost the same as one we saw a couple of years ago. Out of a score of ten you have to deduct one point for every part you put on the floor, e.g. hand, foot, elbow, knee etc. I can get up with one hand. Not too bad for 69. I can get down with nothing.
Well, my friends, I ate much, much, too much last night. Oooops! We did walk home, about 5k, but that would not go far to undo the damage. Even though I exercised 1100 total calories yesterday, I still ate and drank 800 over maintenance calories. Very chunky fries came into it, plus batter fried halloumi, plus half a rich chocolate tart.
Oh well, I have the rest of my life to compensate for it.
The concert was a mixed bag. I just think I am too old for fringe events. So much about the organising annoyed me. A few bright lights though. A very good flamenco singer.
Tonight is Swing dancing. The walk home was hard yesterday - my back was very sore from sitting on benches for hours. But I made it! OK today, but I had to force myself to do my morning exercises. Missed out the push ups.
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -
Good morning all! Happy Tuesday! I woke up this morning after hitting snooze for 30 minutes. What a waste and not typical of me. But I got ready for my day, headed out to take the trash to the curb and it was so beautiful. Temp is/was probably mid 50s, sun not quite up yet, but the birds were going crazy. When I got back inside to make my coffee, my phone chimed. My early morning arrival is not coming today; so out the door I went and managed to walk a fast(ish) three miles. I averaged 3.8 mph, so I am quite happy with that. My ankles feel better (they were still stiff when I woke up). Anyway, I am showered, have walked outside, had my coffee and am ready for kids to arrive. Yea, ME!
Rye- Omigoodness! Hello! So happy to hear/see your voice! So sorry about the financial stress. I am riding that same boat with you, and sending you lots of good thoughts/vibes. Glad to hear that other than that things are rolling along as normal.
Lanette- OH, the up and down test! I remember when some one (maybe Pip) posted that a couple of years ago! I did really well then with only one point deducted for using one hand coming up. Right now, I am using both hands and a knee. I guess it is good to see these sort of things posted now and again, to shake us up and mentally tell ourselves "HEY! You have work to do!"
Heather- lol I swear to God, YOU are my retirement inspiration! I love to read your posts about where you are going, what you are doing, food, grandkids, dancing, cruising,...lol Seriously, from here on out, I will make life choices with the phrase "What would Heather do?" in my head! (Can that be made into a bracelet? WWHD?) But truly, your posts (and a few other of our mfp friend's posts) keep me plugging away at making better choices and aiming for my best life! Inspirational!
Lisa- I am thinking of you! I know it is hard for you to not be going full force on physical things; and that is when other things seem to begin to bog you (all of us) down. Hang in there! Baby steps! Time is a great healer!
Barbara- So sorry to hear of your friend's passing! Sending much love to you!
Pip- When is your race?
Well, the day marches on. I have my interview with a prospective new family tonight! Hoping they commit to me caring for their one year old son, then I can just fill my other spot and be set for summer. Love and hugs to all! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

2 day ride September 7 and 81 -
Day off to a good start. Weekly weigh-in has me down .2 this week. Was a bit disappointed until I put on slacks that did not fit March 7 when I started back here. They are now loose and probably won't fit in another couple of pounds, so 8 pounds does make a difference (and the scale only tells part of the story).
Didn't add yard work to exercise. The only thing I do is let fitbit link up and MFP calculates from steps and cardio activity. Feel like putting something separate in would be double counting. I could be wrong, but this seems to be working for me and I want to keep it simple.
Will try the getting up from floor with no hands (don't know with artificial hips how that will work, don't have completely natural flexibility). I am happy I can squat all the way down and stand up without assistance (and if your hips have ever gone to bone-on-bone, you will know what I mean). However, will have to test that out--body continues to adapt and improve.
Have a good Tuesday all,
Ginny3
