Ohhh I hate the messiness of moving!! I have things everywhere, nothing is in its correct place! I think it is giving me some stress for sure. But on the good side is it will be over soon, and I can slowly get my life in order. I have to look at this move as a positive change. Adapt, adjust and acclimate, is my mantra these days!

I have been meditating daily-ish for about four years. My decision came from reading "10% Happier" by Dan Harris and his later book "Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics". I highly recommend both books. I don't use guided meditation or music or a meditation app and I am happy with my practice. I sit in a chair and use a meditation timer app to tell me when to start and when time is up.
I'll be teaching the intermediate dance class on Thursday in addition to my beginner class on Friday so I have a lot more preparation to do this week.
Barbie from NW WA4 -
Hello Ladies.
Newbie here.
I'm Liz from northern Wisconsin. I love living in the woods. My woods are my happy place.
I just turned 50 in February. I have to say, I have been surprised at how much it has empowered me. For the first time in my life, I really don't care what other people think anymore. It's so liberating.
Anyway, I also celebrated 11 years of marriage to my best friend and love of my life in February. It is my second marriage. My first one was abusive.
We don't have any children together but I have a 27 year old son who lives with us and a five year old grandson who is with us part time. That little boy is the center of my universe. I lost my youngest son in 2011 when he was 17. He died unexpectedly from an asthma attack, though drugs were a factor. My grandson has put my heart back together. He adores me as much as I adore him. He calls me his love of joy. My son struggles with drugs and alcohol. He was there the night my son died and blames himself.
I also have four step-children - two from my first marriage and two from my second.
My husband and I do have two cats that we call our children.
I never struggled with my weight until I quit smoking over six years ago. Then I gained 60 pounds. I still need to lose 50, though I would be happy with 30.
I have rheumatoid arthritis and multiple food sensitivities including gluten, dairy, soy, legumes, oats, and eggs.
I bike. Last year I got up to 30 miles and my goal for this year is 50 miles. I also swim, lift weights, and I am trying to jog again. In the winter, I snowshoe. Thought this year the snow was too deep. We set a record for the all-time snowiest winter - almost ten feet of snow - and over half of it - 57+" - fell in February alone.
I went back to school and graduated with an associates degree in web software development in December. I am building my own business so that I can work from home which works best with my RA. I also work part time at the school I went to administering a program that connects high school students with local businesses for mentoring, career coaching, etc. And I work from home part time for a web design company owned by my brother. I am a busy woman! But I love every minute of it.
@KetoneKaren - I have PTSD from childhood and first marriage. I have found the work of Byron Katie tremendously helpful in overcoming trauma. In her books, she lays out a specific way of journaling that has been very healing for me.
@bananasandoranges - On the app, at the bottom of the diary, is a button for Nutrition. If you click on that, you can toggle to weekly view and it will show you your overall and net calories for the week so that can track weekly as well.
My goal for May is to not change anything for the entire month. I need the consistency. I have a bad habit of planting a seed and digging it up right away to see if it's growing. I am recovering from several years of designer diets - paleo, keto, vegan, intermittent fasting, high carb low fat, etc. My head got really messed up about nutrition and I think I had a touch of orthorexia. I am unwinding all of that. I have a good exercise routine. I am weighing my food and counting calories, protein, saturated fat, and fiber only. I am giving myself permission to eat anything as long as it stays within my limits. Protein is important. I want to limit saturated fat. I want to eat more fiber. And those are my only rules.
I am looking forward to being a part of this group. You sound like a great bunch of ladies!
Thanks, Liz! I don't know about Byron Katie, but I will definitely look into this.

Lenora
Hi Lenora: if you mean your diary: look for <Add food>
on the website: there should be a food option somewhere at the top of your newsfeed or profile page
On the app: there should be an options bar at the the bottom or top of the screen.
If you can't find that, then click <More> and you should have a list of options there that includes food.GRITSandSLUTSandWINOS wrote: »Also, how to end a PM?

Miraculously made protein goal and stayed under total cals yesterday despite indulgence in pizza, B&J NY Super Fudge Chunk ice cream and a real beer. Portion control helped but the real key was standing up to catastrophic thinking voice and saying calmly, firmly, "You lie." In the past, one indulgence would have lead to me eating 3 pieces of pizza, drinking at least two pints of beer and eating half the carton of ice cream. Instead, I had a rare yummy indulgence and, except for being way short of needed fiber, the damage won't be bad at all.
Lisa now THAT's a brilliant use of credit. Well done!
Machka that snow dusted (wallaby?)'s expression made me want to reach out and hug it! We've had some lovely sunny days... 'til you step outside into the chill wind. Feels like it came from the icy Idaho steppes and not the balmy Pacific :{
Welcome Maritill, Liz from N. WI. Thanks for the nutrition weekly vs daily view tip, I didn't know that!
Barbie thanks for the time/link meditation hint. Think that's the trouble, was meditating before breakfast but on T'ai Chi days don't have the time, eat a breakfast bar en route. Need to re-think.
Lanette your diet pill story reminded me of the year in high school that I was taking daily antihistimines. Carried a full load at school, was active in three after school "clubs", worked part time in the library, was go go go all the time. When summer came and the "cold" went away I stopped taking the antihistimines... and slept whenever not working the whole summer. Turns out the antihistimines were speedy... ;(

Katla Metrecal and Jack LaLanne! Used to watch him early in the morning as a child, even occasionally joining in his calisthenics. Good morning all! Happy Monday! I have had a busy weekend with Trentin, and yard work and housework. Saturday morning I got my shopping and errands run, things unpacked and put away, yogurt started and lunch eaten before Trentin arrived at 1pm. He and I then went outside and did some yard work. Well, I did the yard work, he just enjoyed playing with the sticks, rakes, shovels, and miscellaneous nature objects. I didn't have him on Sunday; so Sunday I cleaned and organized my spare room (Lauren's old bedroom). This was monumental because it had become the repository of a LOT of my mother in laws things (now, our things). Now, the only thing in that bedroom that doesn't belong there is a framed piece of art and a dining room table (disassembled). Lots of up and down the stairs, putting things into storage in the basement, bringing outdoor play things up and into storage cabinets in the garage, etc. Needless to say, I was sore from the yard work when I woke up Saturday; and I am sore this morning from the combination of both days efforts. So...I will only walk with the kids today. If it were just muscle soreness I would still do my faster walk, but my ankles are a bit swollen from pushing the lawn mower across the uneven lawn. So I will try to take it easy on them.
I had a bit of a hassle logging into mfp yesterday. All day it said that the site was "under construction". I finally was able to hop on last night at 9pm and log food/read posts (85 of them!).
Michele - Pins and needles while we wait to hear from you in regards to Denise and your grandbaby! If she is like my daughter was (and most young mamas seem to be) she won't want you to post anything until she has a chance to make her "introductory post" to her friends/family via social media. Or she may not want baby on social media at all. Anyway, I am so happy for all of you! Being a grandma opened my heart and took me to a whole new level of love. Enjoy!
Liz - Welcome to this community and welcome to your 50s!! Whoot! I had to giggle at your description of turning 50; I felt the same way. Still do. It is almost an invincible feeling, like when you were a teen, except with a little bit of a "f*** you, I will do it myself" attitude thrown in! It is wonderful! You have had quite the journey to get here, but I think you will be successful in reaching your goals. This group is a wonderful support tool to have in your pocket!
Carol - My mother was 5'2 and at 120 wore a 12/14 jean. I think at 5'2, your body has limited space to put the weight. Remember, too, that jean sizes have changed. What is a 12/14 now, was probably an 10/12 or smaller 20 years ago.
Rebecca- those footprint flowers are adorable! I think I will do a version of those for part of our mother's day craft! Thanks for sharing!
Lanette- Your high school days remind me of mine. Back in the day it seemed the norm to not eat for a few days to lose weight. I was never very good at it, so stayed at a pretty healthy 130-140 (5'8 here). My year in Mexico, however, brought me to a new level of that sort of dieting. I ended up coming home weighing 110 lb, with a head full of "monsters" and an eating disorder.
TMI maybe, but it's about sex - Oh my dear lord. WE just got a four inch memory foam topper for our bed. It is wonderful to sleep on; not so great for sex. It was like making love in quicksand. I am surprised we didn't just give up because we were frustrated and laughing so hard. Then when DH said "I don't remember sex being this difficult; maybe this is what memory foam does? Affects your memory. Maybe it has always been this hard...". Anyway, do any of you use a topper or pad for your bed? Is there anything else other than memory foam so that I don't feel like I am trying to pull myself out of quicksand?
There were more of you I wanted to comment to, but it will have to wait until another time. Kids are here and ready for breakfast. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Uni -- got frustrated with my instructor last night and sent an email which had the result I was hoping for. She agreed to meet me in my tutorial this morning. And fortunately, it looks like we're on the right track. I've been working on it this evening.
Work -- another busy day. I'm trying to get on top of my stuff while fielding requests from other people.
Cycling Club -- I really need to look at the route for an event on June 1.
Exercise -- 5.6 km walking + 3 flights of stairs.
Eating -- mmmm ... not sure. I should start logging again. Haven't since the Easter break. However, I've eating lots of fruit today.

What a morning!
My mum had a fall whilst trying to give my dad a wash (he pushed her away and because she has no balance she fell onto the floor) He managed to go downstairs to get the phone and take it back upstairs so she cold phone me. She hadn't hurt herself too much, she just couldn't get up, poor thing had been trying to get up for nearly half an hour before she phoned me.
I wasn't much help to be honest, I couldn't get her up, I was trying to lift her, but her legs weren't cooperating. Of course this was the day that the carers were late!! In the end she shuffled to the top of the stairs and used the steps and a grab rail to hoist herself up (with a bit of help from me). She was exhausted by the time she got downstairs, I made her a cuppa and a slice of toast, did dad some porridge and toast - then the carer showed up.
Mum was very cross with dad, she said he did it on purpose because he didn't want a wash. I think now she will leave it for the carers to wash him.
I'll go back later this afternoon and check on them both, see how mum's legs and knees are holding up, she probably jarred her shoulder too when she fell. I'll need to keep a closer eye on them.
Love to all

Good morning ladies!
And boom, it's Sunday. I'm playing catch-up.
Machka - and any of you who have nice walking trails away from traffic.... I am jealous. We have a nice groomed trail in town that goes for miles and miles, but I don't want to have to drive ten miles to get there. So my walks are generally confined to early mornings, down our 1/4 mile paved private road then on to the highway for a jaunt and then down another private road. Early in the morning there's not much traffic. Not much of a shoulder though on the main highway and the log trucks swoosh by so I try to stay off it as much as possible. Good thing - up and down our private road twice is a mile and NO traffic. Plus seems like no one opens their drapes here before 8 so I have the world to myself, lol. Would prefer it be near the beach tho!
Rebecca - when I first came into this group, I kept notes....mainly names and where folks were from and just a couple interesting facts about each person. It really helped. Which reminds me.... new gals, would you please add your names and location at the end of EACH post? It really helps you stick in my brain, lol. Some kind of photo helps too, even cats or flowers. Of course I know Pip has her boot and lives not far from me near Tacoma so I never forget that!
NYKaren - that Boomer Expo is a great idea!! I'm going to steal this and run it by the local seniors group, maybe even the local college would be willing to sponsor something like it.
Lisa - that new car is awesome, and what a great deal! Hope your doc visit in productive.
Carol - very happy that your recover from knee surgery is going so well!
Michele - we are waiting on the update on Denise and the baby. Hope everyone is happy and healthy! Photo please!!
Sharon - congrats on your loss and thank you for sharing the info about your calorie-counting mom. I went through similar. I was the chubby kid and my dad thought I needed to be slim like my older sister. Very critical of what and how much I ate so I became a secret snacker. Turns out once I hit puberty I shot up to 5' 9", way past my skinny 5' 4" sister.
So during my teens, Twiggy was the rage and so were diet pills (amphetamines) and there was a doctor in town who handed them out like candy. I took them for a while during my high school years, which was easier than counting calories, and graduated high school at around 155 lbs. Still thought I was fat. I was a farm girl and had a lot of muscle.
Beth - I instantly related to your story. 5' 8" and 150 lbs was perfect.
My weight went up and down, as high as 190+ several times and as low as 129 which was my weight when got married after literally starving myself for several months. Anorexia was popular then as well.
I managed to keep my weight in line with Weight Watchers throughout my life - when I'd hit a new high, I'd march back in there and return to goal. I have a thick packet of all the weight log books I've collected throughout the years.
I decided to stop drinking after I retired several years (loved beer) and that plus this group -SWSY, MFP logging, etc., helped me get my weight under control so now I tend to keep between 160 and 165 - I don't mind being at the high end of the BMI. And my goal is no longer about weight on the scale, it's about getting and keeping healthy. And fitting into my jeans.

I was a "normal" weight growing up but in my late high school years and early college years, I discovered that stress makes me not want to eat. At about 19, I dropped to 112 lbs, which was a bit light for 5'6".
I dropped to about 118 when I really started cycling long distances seriously.
That's me in the green jersey in 2002 (35 years old) ...
I'm not sure if it was anorexia, but if I'm stressed it is very easy for me to stop eating.
Machka in Oz6 -
On the history of the weight journey: My late teens found me having to lose from about 180 down to 127 to get in the Air Force (5'2" tall). I did it through major exercise and pretty much starving myself. Got to basic training, and I basically fainted after any exertion. They tested me, and I was at 11% body fat - which was half where I should have been. They bumped my weight max up to 180, and I was under orders to eat three square meals a day for the next six weeks. At my first duty station, the commander saw that recommendation and decided to bump it down to 145, which was pretty accomplishable, and I exercised a lot due to the military requirements. Was bumping up against my max when I got out of the military at 23, and the combination of being out of the military and the fertility drugs to try to have a baby gained me 60 pounds in the next 60 days. So quickly that I developed stretch marks... and have struggled ever since.
Happy Monday, future or past, everyone. TTYL.
Love y'all,

Hi all, soon going out for the Latin American performance in the Spiegeltent. We are going to catch the bus most of the way there and walk most of the way back after dinner. I've done my 600 this morning and been for my 5k run, although I walked about 200 yards because I was eating chocolate ice cream.
We bought each other almost identical cards for our anniversary and wrapped our presents both in spotted paper. I gave DH his smart pen and he gave me a glass jewelled brooch in the shape of a seahorse. It is 16 years since the day we met.
We originally found each other online and met up in a pub in Covent Garden on May 6th.
Got to fix my face.

It's finally warm enough for me to wear my lighter weight jacket and not the winter one. I'll take the dogs out after breakfast without their coats.
We are registered with a company called MEDCURE. When my friend's husband died, they came to her house and picked up her husband for use in medical research then paid for his cremation and returned his ashes to her. She spread them at a location of her choice.
I have no sentimental attachment to visiting the final resting place of my loved ones. I went once to where my maternal grandparents are buried in New York as part of an afternoon adventure with my cousin whose parents are buried in the same location. When my sister died in 1966, my parents bought a four person plot and later my father (in 1988), then my mother (in 1991) were buried beside her. The only time I visited their graves was for the next funeral. We later gave the fourth plot to Jake's son because we planned to be cremated and had moved out of state. I pay homage to my loved ones every time I make use of some lesson I've learned from them.

KJ: Your memory foam topper sounds a bit too much like quicksand. We have foam mattresses in both bedrooms but they are on the stiff side. There is plenty of support for lovemaking but absolutely no bounce. The whole mattress is about 8-10 inches thick and we had help getting them upstairs. Thank goodness!!! They weigh a ton. :ohwell:
Viv: Your poor mom! She is so lucky to have you close-by enough to come and help. :flowerforyou:
Heather: Happy Anniversary!
I just heard DH coming downstairs. Good timing! I’m planning on going to yoga today, but my yoga pants didn’t dry over night as I’d expected. I’m hoping to get them dry in time.

Happy Monday ladies!
Viv - I echo relief that you are nearby. Are your parents thinking of moving the bedroom downstairs at all - I think you mentioned at one time they talked about it? Thank goodness there are carers that come by.
Regarding getting up off the floor, the latest AARP magazine had an article about lower body strength and it states if a person cannot rise from a sitting position on the floor without using his/her hands, he/she has increased mortality rate (whatever that means. Doesn't being born increase a person's mortality rate? )
HHmmm.... I haven't been able stand from a sit position w/o hands for decades. I looked online and saw a presentation by a doctor who said that's a crazy idea for older people to even try it. The main thing is to be able to get up off the floor and back on your feet, and he suggested doing it like a baby does - on hands and knees and pushing up from there. He also suggested practicing this several times a day.
The talk about funerals is interesting. While DH and I plan to be cremated (or donated if possible), I admit I am drawn to cemeteries and walking among the old headstones, reading the dates and family names and imagining what their lives were like. With the elimination of headstones, that history is gone forever. Sure, a person can find death notices on the internet, but it's just not the same.
For posterity's sake, I think I'll look into having our names and birth/death dates chiseled into the family headstone back in Indiana. And at having cremated remains interred there.
On that cheery note, we're having a heat wave the end of this week. I'm not ready for 90 but ready or not, that's probably what we'll see come Thursday and Friday.

Lanette: Our predicted high temperature is 89F Thursday and 92F Friday. I hope we have a lovely breeze to go with it.
DH has been doing better than in a long time. He’s having good results with eating and has been more active. We’ve gone on a couple of lovely rambles in the past two days. Yay! Unfortunately, he still dosen’t want to take the RV to see the kids. He wants me to go alone by air, or for us to fly them here. I’m not happy with his ideas and we will see how things go. :grumble:

Viv-sorry about your mom. My mom is very unsteady on her feet since her stroke. She’s doing well though.
Gave a final exam this morning. One more to go. My students and I are both ready for the semester to end!
