@MegaMooseEsq - have you tried icing your shin right in the spot that is hurting? You might also try some calf stretches/raises - sometimes shin splints occur because your calf muscles are tight and pull at the attachment points along the shin causing inflammation. 3rd thing to consider is the age and miles on your shoes and/or try running in a different pair and see if it helps.

Hobbes and I went out planning for 6 miles with the thought we would come home if it got too hot. We did end up running about 6.5 miles and it did get hot but I stopped a few times to let him rest in the shade. Between us we consumed the entire 1.5L of water in my pack plus drinks, especially for him, from the drinking fountains. It has been so cool that we just aren't adjusted to the hotter weather that is now upon us.

I just finished icing and it definitely helped with the pain. I do have tight calves, but that's not anything new. This happened so soon after dealing with my knee/hip issue that I wonder if it might be related. My shoes are new but not brand new - I've been running in them for occasional short runs all spring and switched to them full time maybe three weeks ago. I've worried that they might be part of the issue, but then, my old shoes had over 500 miles so I was worried that might have been the issue. I'm a little overwhelmed by all the possibilities at this point.3 -
Now jogging 5km without interval pretty consistently although very slowly. However on the plus side that is all i had hoped for when i was not running at all.

I knew today was going to be hot so I got up pretty early to run. But it was already 75F (I don't know if it was ever any cooler than that). I had a nice 10 mile run. It was hot though and I felt slow. I kind of overate yesterday so I felt kind of bloated this morning. That plus the heat and the sun is probably why I felt so slow. But it was my long run and I think they are supposed to be run at an easy pace anyway, so slow was probably good. I was early enough that a lot of my run was shaded so that was nice. And between 4.5 and 5 miles there was a very light rain. It was weird too because the sun was shining and it wasn't very cloudy. But it was nice and helped me cool down some.
@RunnerGirl238 Congratulations on the PR! And good luck on your first full! You'll ace it!
@katharmonic Way to meet your goal of not finishing last! Sounds like a fun race.
@noblsheep That's a lot of stairs!
@Teresa502 I'm glad no one was hurt!
@MegaMooseEsq Hope the shin is better soon and it isn't anything too serious.

In seriousness, the distances I have been building on for awhile.

Real Goals: Get back to running regularly without injuring myself.
Today's notes – Long time since I checked in. After last Tuesday's surprise quad hurt, I took 2 extra rest days, then honored the normal Friday rest day instead of running the McMullen Mile. I volunteered, and lost count of how many times I got asked why I wasn't running. The volunteering was fun, and I likely was in shape to run a mile; but running a mile at mile race pace was just too risky for the current state of my running chain development.
Saturday the alarm rang so I could go to a group run, and I shut it off and rolled over. Slept another 3 hours, then went out and ran 6 miles solo. It went great, no aches. I'd like to report that I held discipline and just ran 5 miles on principle today, but that's not how it happened.
I got optimistic after yesterday's nice run, and set out to run 8 miles. Took the 2 detours that would turn a 6.3 mile route into an 8.1 mile route. And partway through the second detour, my left vastus lateralis started muttering. Okay, that was sore enough to make me take extra rest a while back. It was warm and humid, so I popped an S-cap on the chance it was just electrolytes. By the time I'd run 4.4 miles, I knew I wouldn't run 8. Gutted it out to 5, slowed to a walk, and turned the short way so I'd only have a bit over 2 miles to walk home instead of 3.1.
I felt less worried when a symmetrical ache appeared in the right vastus lateralis as I was walking. Maybe I can just walk this off. Found a utility pole with some shade and grass to do my stretching, walked the rest of the way home, and I'm fine with walking and stairs and all. It feels like I simply pushed my quads as far as I can today. I *think* I managed to avoid pushing them too far, but it's going to be a slow road back to doing real long runs.
Scheduled rest day tomorrow. I'll honor that, then go to club practice on Tuesday and see what I'm fit to do. Right now I'm thinking a repeat of the easy intervals I did a couple weeks ago that wiped me out. I might be fit enough for them now.

June goal 100 miles
Somehow managed to simultaneously choke on water and pee myself, yesterday during the local 10k. Hahaha. At least I avoided running into the person who also chose that moment to start walking in front of me with no warning! It was a very small race, but the ladies my age showed up! My time would have been in the top 3 for ANY of the other female age groups, including the 4 younger than me, but only got me 6th in my own. It was really fun, though, and I think I've got a new 10k PB! I was actually surprised during the last kilometer, when I realized I had a PR chance, but gave it my best for a fast finish.
Shortly after the finish, a guy caught up to me and complimented me on my pace! He must've been following me
Lots of fun.12 -
What a treat today! I came out to Missoula, MT for work and my run was along the river here. What a perfect day, sunny, 70, 24% humidity with lots of birds, blue sky, green trees, and snow capped mountains. My 5.5 miles took me 52 minutes but it was so incredibly pretty. I was bummed the trail was gravely and rocky so I had to look down a lot to keep from stumbling. One of my favorite runs ever.

Morning all.
Was planning for a 21km hike/run today on a trail, but woke up to the kind of rain that gets races cancelled. It's eased up a bit now but more rain is forecasted in the afternoon and the trail is definitely all sloshed up by now. Kinda bummed because this was going to be the highlight of this trip.
Guess that means I'll spend the day wandering around town and eating tofu.
More on the trail for people who are interested:So when Kobo Daishi (founder of Shingon Buddhism in Japan) was living at the top of Mt. Koya, his mother came to visit him. However she could not go up the mountain because women were banned from the sacred grounds. So the master would walk down the mountain along this trail daily to see her, and then back again. (To think of it, he was running a trail marathon every day!) A few hundred years later, a series of 180 Gorinto - stone pillars about 3 meters tall and shaped like a pagoda - were set up to mark the course and pilgrims to Kobo Daishi's grave at the top of the mountain have been following it ever since.

OK, I've not been here all month yet. But now I'm going to post a goal and distance so far.
Goal is 80 miles for this month. It's just over half of last month's goal and actual, but there is a reason... I'm moving in a couple weeks (work transfer) and I've been super busy getting ready for that.
So far, I ran the Revel Rockies marathon on 6/2, ran 4.68 miles on 6/5, and ran 5.68 miles today.
Before today's run, I tried a sample of Stimul8 pre-workout. I was impressed, though I can't say whether my good run was because I have rested so well (i.e. not run much in the past week) or if it is because of the pre-workout. But I may end up buying some and seeing if those results persist.

How disappointing. That trail looks awesome!

@polskagirl01 - Congratulations on your 10k!!
@noblsheep - that trail and the history are fantastic! Hopefully maybe you can do it on another day!
@Lazy_Bones_85 - I rarely hear anyone mention Missoula, MT. I was actually born near there when my dad was getting his masters at the University of MT. Beautiful place to run!2 -
Sorry guys, skipped the last few pages. Hope everyone had a great weekend!
I've decided to let go of the HM in July. I'm way too stressed and don't actually have the time or energy to do long runs on the weekend for the next couple of weeks. And add to that, today was my last Monday at work and I'm sick. I'm probably going to be off work tomorrow. And this is a viral illness in my chest. So no running. Hopefully I'll be OK in a couple of days.11 -
@Lazy_Bones_85 that is beautiful. The sky...
@polskagirl01 I hear you. I see you. I might have peed in a half marathon or two...I'm terrified of the marathon...body issues.
@midwesterner85 good luck on the move! Hope it is somewhere cool.
Yesterday was a rest day. Today I'll lift and do some light cross training- elliptical maybe. My legs feel pretty good despite a bit of quad muscle soreness.
My month so far: 33 miles. 92 to go for goal.

@polskagirl01 great job on your 10k. Your age group really represented!
Re: the peeing, when I was training for the marathon last year my friend said to me in seriousness "You need to decide if you're going to be okay with peeing yourself during the race" and I was most decidedly not ok with that. But you know, a little pee sometimes happens, especially when you cough/choke. I'm just not cool with letting it happen on purpose and fortunately have never had a true emergency in that department.
@Lazy_Bones_85 gorgeous!! What an amazing place to run.
@midwesterner85 good luck with your move.
@avidkeo hope you feel better!
