In the midst of new shoe testing. Ugh. NOT my favorite thing in the world. I don't think the NB 1080s will work out. The Topos did pretty well on Wed, a bit of numbness but it went away in one foot. More numbness on today's test run, but not as painful as the NB's. Blah. I don't even know. I'm gonna give them a few more test runs. I'm very vaguely cautiously optimistic about the Topo's, lol, although I also need to keep adjusting to the lower drop (5mm vs the 10mm of my previous Brooks Glycerins). Def feeling it in my calves on the two test runs on the uphills.
Anywho, it is glorious weather today. Warmer than my ideal running temps still, but 70°F, humidity of only 49%, sunny, but with a glorious breeze. It made me really really really not want to go back inside the office
I'm also optimistic about my goal for the month. Just over halfway there and just under halfway through the month.
Happy Friday all!

Have you tried shortening your stride with the lower drop? That foot numbness, I assume, is constant pressure. Shorting it up would allow your knees hips legs to absorb more of impact. Also, if you're not already, take to some trails. I find my stride naturally shortens.
I have shoes I can do on trail but a road race leaves the bottom of my feet numb. I do have nerve damage which can cause that, but I think it's also a normal running experience.
Good luck

The numbness is not a thing unique to lower drop shoes for me. My trail shoes are zero drop Altras, and I don't run a ton in them but they don't make my feet numb. I tend to have a cadence that averages around 172-174, and my last 5k race averaged 180. I also don't heel strike so don't have a super hard strike impact. I can't seem to figure out what exactly causes it but there are just some shoes that do it to me. My beloved previous model Brooks Glycerins never caused numbness! Any time I've looked for new brands/styles of shoes I've run into this struggle, lol. Tis a frustrating puzzle!1 -

This. Make sure they are not tight on your foot. If your ankle has pressure it could cause numbness in your feet. But, ultimately, probably just need a different style of shoe.

I had one foot go numb wearing NB 1080's, and loosening the laces as well as shorter strides/higher cadence helped. My cadence was lower than yours initially. Altra Escalantes are my current shoe, which I absolutely love. I do want to try a pair of the Topo's though.
Good luck figuring out what will work for you now!2 -
I have numbness issues fairly commonly as well. I have Morton's Neuroma in both feet. Have you checked out the symptoms for that?1

Ran on the treadmill again this morning. It was kind of chilly and rainy out and I am over that kind of weather. Then strength training, working on mobility and body weight stuff, keeping it easy for tomorrow's race.
Kind of funny story - this week at marathon run group a couple of people were talking about replacing the battery on your car key fob, and how there was an actual regular key inside the fob. I know I was shown that when I bought my car, but would never have remembered it and had to open it up and see that yes, that's true. Well, today I was loading the car with all my stuff and put the dog in there. I shut the door and a couple of seconds later hear the dreaded beep - she somehow locked the doors with the key inside the car. And then she set off the alarm to add to the fun. Fortunately, I had a spare fob so I raced upstairs and got it. But of course the battery is dead and the doors won't open and the alarm won't shut up (sorry neighbors). I then remember the conversation from two days ago and pop open the real key and use it to unlock the door. What a fortuitous bit of timing!
Spartan Sprint (3+ miles/20ish obstacles) race tomorrow - I decided to stay overnight in a hotel so I didn't have to get up insanely early and drive 3.5 hours in the morning. I'm really happy about that decision. Hoping for a good night's sleep and a leisurely start to the day before our 11:15 start time. Given this is my third Spartan race, and it is so much shorter than the last one, I am feeling pretty laid back about it right now. Not that I expect it to be easy at all, but at least I know what I'm getting into.
Good luck to all racing this weekend, or long running, or whatever you are up to!

@katharmonic that is perfect timing. My dh went a year without a spare key and when he finally got one, he locked himself out of his truck twice in a week. Sometimes things work out.
@NiigataA ouch! My doc thought I had one, sent me for an MRI and was going to sent me immediately for surgery. I'm glad it wasn't one. Just something else, not sure what it was. My dh was in the habit of squeezing my foot when he walked by, only time it hurt. I assume it's better. He no longer squeezes my foot. You gonna have those removed?
I walked 2 miles in 50 minutes. Land speed record right thar. No pain, really. Probably be stiff tomorrow. I was stoked to be out.

The doc is working me through the non invasive options until it gets too bad 🤷♀️ I’ve got metatarsal pads in my runners and hiking boots for now. Next step is orthotics and after that will be surgery.1 -
@eleanorhawkins and @elise4270 - My mom and stepdad lived in Spain while he worked in Algeria. They rented a tiny house in a village on the island of Mallorca. They walked to the local markets for fresh fish and veggies, local olives and almonds and bought wine straight from the barrel (BYOB and cork 😊) It was amazing but like @eleanorhawkins said with some downsides. They were over an hour away from the main/big town (Palma) and had only a very basic healthcare clinic who didn't recognize that my mom was having a heart problem. She is buried there in the place she loved! My daughter went to visit her gravesite which was difficult to find and met so many wonderful people who helped her. She is fluent in Spanish even though the dialect is a bit different she could communicate easily. She spent a couple of weeks traveling around the mainland as well. Loved it there.
Notes medical needs and employment opportunities in Spain... maybe @workaholic_nurse will come too. And @Avidkeo .
That food sounds great. I just wanna live somewhere there’s not a burger join on every corner.
Unless you're in very rural areas the standard of medical care here is actually excellent now. And free if you are legally working and paying your taxes. My mother had breast cancer 15 years ago, and the only thing we could complain about at all throughout the process of diagnosis, treatment, surgery, radiotherapy and monitoring was that the nurse who removed the stitches was a little rough. Also, although I currently don't see a dermatologist even, for many years I was under the care of an excellent one and was given medication which is worth a fortune (Enbrel and Humira), again at no cost and with very little difficulty proving I needed it. And we're both (obviously) foreign!
I think you should all come for a visit and run a race here. Málaga (my nearest city) has an awesome marathon and a couple of halfs, Sevilla is also meant to be really go, so is Valencia which is a little further away but still in the same country!
Picked up my race packet last night, and my weirdo magnet worked while I was standing in the queue. Think I found the guy I'll be aiming to beat tonight! He started off by telling us all that he was looking forward to running by the sea cause he usually only gets to run 'up and down mountains on dirt tracks'. Then he explained he'd only been running for 4 months and never done more than 5km, but he had finally managed to do that in 40 minutes. But he'd signed up for the 10km because challenges. Then he said "nah I'm kidding you, do I look like a runner? I'm here to pick someone else's bib up." THEN he said "hahaha what's the meaning of life if you don't joke around?" A few minutes later he informed me he'd tried to sign up for the (in)famous 101km ultra they run near here but hadn't managed to get a place this year. Finally he started doing maths and asking me to help him work out how fast he needed to run to hit the 1hr15min cut-off time tonight (LOL like I haven't already worked that one out for myself). So yeah, I know I'm going to end up running next to that guy tonight. At least I'll be laughing inside even if I have to try to keep a straight face.

@MegaMooseEsq my situation is similar to yours (work from home, very long hours at the desk) and I find pilates/yoga-type stuff essential for my back. As long as I keep that up I'm fine, but as soon as I miss a couple of days, I find I can't turn over in bed at night without squealing. Well done on resisting the trying to run and see urge, that isn't easy even when you know it makes sense!
@Avidkeo how are you feeling?
About the Garmin. Firstly, @Elise4270 you have a heart that is bigger than you but no way could I accept that! I currently have a fitbit (he doesn't know how much that cost either! gotta love marriage sometimes) that is about a year old. When it dies, I will replace it with a Garmin. To this end, I am saving up every bit of loose change he leaves in his pockets, change from groceries, etc etc. I could have afforded to get myself one with a little bit of money my great-aunt left me when she died. But I spent it on tickets to the Bon Jovi concert in Madrid next month. And a hotel room there, and train tickets to get there. I've been waiting 25 years to see Bon Jovi in concert. And it's almost here! 3 weeks and 2 days to go!!!! Not that I'm counting!!!! Can you tell I'm excited, much? lol
No run for me today. Friday is my rest day. Plus I have to get to the city to pick up my T-shirt and number for tomorrow night's race. Feeling a little more confident I can finish under the cutoff time now, not sure my legs will approve of me doing so though. Oh well.

Send me a PM and I’ll chip in on shipping! No sense letting a perfectly functional Garmin gather dust when it could have a loving home. Think of the poor, lonely Garmin, @eleanorhawkins!5 -
16.25 miles this morning. Felt easy for about two hours, but the last 37 or so minutes were pretty brutal. 77F, 85% humidity, 20mph. Only had 12 oz of water on me. Tried to ration it, but when it ran out, and the sun came out, that was pretty much the end.
And felt weighted down with soul crushing guilt and regret, because I quit my '2nd job' software development contract. I tried to put up with it for 3 weeks, but each day was worse than the last. The knot in my stomach grew bigger every day, and I just couldn't take the stress any longer. I feel like I committed career suicide 😭. But if I would have stayed, it might have been the other kind. Maybe Home Depot is hiring....

Depends on what country you go by. In the USA the first day of summer is June 21, but some other countries use different days:

And felt weighted down with soul crushing guilt and regret, because I quit my '2nd job' software development contract. I tried to put up with it for 3 weeks, but each day was worse than the last. The knot in my stomach grew bigger every day, and I just couldn't take the stress any longer. I feel like I committed career suicide 😭. But if I would have stayed, it might have been the other kind. Maybe Home Depot is hiring....
Oh man, I feel you on the career agony. For what it’s worth, I genuinely believe that your health is more important than your job - if nothing else, you can’t do a job well if you’re not taking care of yourself. The best move I made in my career was giving up on the idea of a career and settling into “good enough” - a year later doors have started to open that I never would have expected. Sometimes there’s a happy ending, sometimes there isn’t, but either way, you only get this one go-around at life, and spending it mired in stress is no way to live. And heck, if you like talking to strangers about home improvement, maybe a couple shifts at Home Depot would be a good move!4 -

MIssed this post first go around but it absolutely sounds like you did the right thing. Such moves are rarely "career suicide" - they typically pass once you get your next job.2 -

Spain is hiring. Perhaps we could look at a running commune of sorts.
There’s a shift in our house regarding career changes too, I can’t elaborate just yet. Life’s to short to sell out for corporate America. I know it’s cliche, but I have met people that gladly stepped back and out of certain careers that were just a horrible fit, and they are much happier. If you don’t stand for something, you stand for nothing.MegaMooseEsq wrote: »eleanorhawkins wrote: »@shanaber It's all about training. And owner attitude. Some dogs, like children, are more sociable/outgoing/boisterous or whatever than others. Not an excuse. Trouble is some people don't care, or are just plain clueless. This guy was walking a dog that is of a size that requires a muzzle to be loose in public here without even a collar on. Also, this was on a trail with massive signs at each banning dogs from being allowed to run loose on it as it's a nesting area. So no respect for the rest of the human race or nature either.
@Avidkeo how are you feeling?
Oh well.
Hey, I've got an old Garmin 620, totally functional, lying around gathering dust. It's yours if you want it, just pm me an address.
Send me a PM and I’ll chip in on shipping! No sense letting a perfectly functional Garmin gather dust when it could have a loving home. Think of the poor, lonely Garmin, @eleanorhawkins!
I’ve got a paypal account, I could chip in too if I can remember how it works... “help! I need a teenager!” Haha.
I love this group. Everyone gets a Garmin and we all move to Spain. Make room @eleanorhawkins , mfp is coming over. 😉 dh has been wanting to really buckle down on his Spanish. He speaks to me in Spanish, I reply in German. Haha!9 -
@AlphaHowls - you are still out there knocking out the miles! Go Girl!!
@katiejane83 - I always seem to have issues with my toes going to sleep (especially in NB) but since getting these Nathan laces I rarely have problems. There are lots of other brands too. It took a little bit to adjust them but once they are set they are great and I rarely have any issues now (except still with NB)MegaMooseEsq wrote: »16.25 miles this morning. @eleanorhawkins - love that term 'weirdo magnet'! Those are the kind of people I just slowly move away from 🤣 Otherwise I start thinking not nice things and might accidentally say something!5 -
Longest run in years this morning! The last time I did a 5k was in 2015, I think. So I'm happy to see myself getting stronger and stronger! I felt a bit sluggish for the last 2 km and had to walk a fair amount but the first 3 felt really good. Just going to continue getting stronger and building up my endurance I need to find a race to register for in the fall to work towards.
Today’s run: 5km, 34:11
Distance so far: 24km
June distance goal: 50km10 -
Thank you all so much fir the supportive words and experiences! It helps to hear about other 'survivors'. I love this group!😍💓💓
Yeah, every day I would tell my boss it's not good, and getting worse. He said that's ok just do what you can, and if it doesn't work out, that's fine. But when I told him I actually quit, he was very quiet and just said, "Well, Ok"5 -
I have numbness issues fairly commonly as well. I have Morton's Neuroma in both feet. Have you checked out the symptoms for that?
I have not, I'll have to do some googling.PastorVincent wrote: »KatieJane83 wrote: »KatieJane83 wrote: »In the midst of new shoe testing.
Tis a frustrating puzzle!
Aww darn it. I was hoping for an easy solution. How about your laces? Are they loose enough?
This. Make sure they are not tight on your foot. If your ankle has pressure it could cause numbness in your feet. But, ultimately, probably just need a different style of shoe.
Lol, I actually already lace all my shoes to relieve pressure over the top of the foot and tie loosely
