Congratulations on finishing a really tough race, @PastorVincent. That just sounds brutal.
@Tramboman congratulations on your race and finishing second in your age group! Well done.
I apologize if I missed anyone else. Hope everyone had a good running weekend and end of June. Congrats to all those who made their goals, or worked hard in spite of some challenges, or recovered as best they could.

Little catching up to do - I spent the weekend in Chicago with a friend and got a bit of running done. We were supposed to meet up Thursday night but her train got so delayed she postponed until the next morning. I took the opportunity to do my long run before she arrived. It was hot and humid - the forecast called for 90 degrees that day but I was hoping to beat the heat in the am. I enjoyed running along the lakeshore and seeing a lot of Chicago views, but it was tough. I went out about 4 miles and came back, hoping to get 8-9 miles in at least. I stopped once and waded into the lack a little to cool off and I fortunately found a cold drinking fountain to refill my water botter. The way back I took fewer side loops so it was a bit shorter. I didn't want to end at only 6-7, so I decided to loop out to Navy Pier. By the time I reached the very end of the pier, I was shot. I dragged myself to 8 miles even and then stopped and walked the rest of the way. It was pretty oppressive. When I was almost back to my hotel though I could feel the wind pick up and the temps really started dropping. I made it in before it started pouring. But the rest of the day really cooled down.
Saturday and today I took shorter runs with my friend. I was really happy she was interested in running and she did a great job. We went to Millenium Park and a bit more along the lakeshore and river.
Other than running, we did a ton of walking and lots of stairs, so my feet and calves are tired! We took an architecture boat tour which was fascinating and so fun. Lots of shopping, and mostly just catching up and laughing. It was a great weekend. Unfortunately, it's not quite over as I'm stuck in O'Hare with an ever-growing delay due to storms. I'm trying to be zen about it.
So that wraps up June running. I exceeded my 100-mile goal, and ended up with exactly the same total as last month. I will come back tomorrow and figure out my goals for July. Also, thank you @zeesparrow, @rheddmobile, @quilteryoyo, @shanaber, and @PastorVincent for the congrats on my pull-up!

Today's run was 10.25 miles which puts me at 114.93 for June. I kind of wish I had run another .07 miles, but oh well. It was a good run. I wanted to get up early, but we celebrated my Mom's 75th birthday yesterday at my sister's and even though I didn't get home all that late, we video chatted with our son in Japan when we got home and ended up going to bed pretty late. So instead of heading out around 6:30 I was getting up around that time and didn't get out until after 7. It was warm, but not too brutal. It was 71F and the humidity was only 85% and dew point 65 so it could have been a lot worse weather wise. I didn't see a lot of critters, but I did see one cottontail and a really pretty pair of cardinals. I also saw some pretty horses. One kind of startled me because he was right next to the fence and I was kind of lost in thought and as I passed a tree he was just right there. I was also startled by a couple of dogs. I didn't even see them. They were sitting in the shade in their yard and they just came walking (not running or barking) toward me. I would have turned a block sooner if I had noticed them, but I did not see them until they were right beside me. I just kind of started and said "go away" and they both turned around and went back to their yard. I guess they were pretty well behaved dogs even though they probably were not supposed to be in the front yard.
For some reason my run didn't upload to Strava. I did some yoga stretching later and it uploaded. Has anyone ever had that happen, and does anyone know how to upload the run? It shouldn't really matter, but it annoys me to no end.
Congrats @PastorVincent on your finish and to Kristi on her run.
Congrats on your race and AG finish @Tramboman!

Nominal June mileage goal: 100
Real Goals: Get back to running regularly without injuring myself.
Today's notes – Final report for June. Woke up earlier than I should have, made it to church, and desperately needed a nap in the afternoon. So I didn't get out for a run till about 5:30 PM, which was okay in terms of weather; the sun was no longer high, and the humidity wasn't obvious when I started.
The plan was 8 to 10 miles and assess how beat up I am after running Ganondagan yesterday. First half mile was fairly creaky, then I warmed up to the effort. Initially felt the bruise on my right calf from falling on my warmup yesterday; then that faded. The ache came back later, then faded again. It's on the outside of the calf, on the soleus; but it's a surface bruise. I don't feel it when stretching the soleus. So I figure gentle running to get the blood flowing will help it heal.
By mile 6, the humidity had made itself known. 8 miles wasn't going to be a problem. I somehow missed the turn to my street to turn my projected total from 8.5 to 9.5. Then as I ran through the neighborhood, I was thinking maybe 9.4 would be enough. But at the final turn toward home, I found myself turning away for an out and back to make it to 10 miles.
This is the longest continual run I've done since coming back from the stress fracture. Last week, I ran 10 miles; but it was cut up into 5 and 5 with a recovery interval between. This week, I ran 10. The last 2 were hard mentally. Post-run analysis shows I ran the last 3 miles too fast. Oops. My pace control needs work, but I feel better about my conditioning. I could be in better shape, and I will be in better shape; today's run is part of the process of getting there.
That closes out June. I met my nominal goal of 100 miles, with a bit of room to spare. Early June was scary with extra rest days, but now I can say I did get back to running regularly. I can even say I didn't injure myself, because that surface bruise does not keep me from running normally.
And I felt good enough about how I'm doing the day after the trail race that I registered for a 4th of July race. Four miles, on roads, with interesting hills in the first 2 miles. Don't need to kill it, just need to have some fun.
On to July!

0630-8k total-52k, goal-80k
Ate something that didn't agree with me yesterday and spent the afternoon sleeping it off. Headed out at dusk. The plan wanted 15km but I was pretty sure I didn't have it in me, so planned a route for 10. Well, my blood sugar decided to jump ship at somewhere between 5 and 6km. Shuffled to the nearest convenience store and bought a chocolate bar - ate it all not thinking straight. Rambled around some more waiting for it to kick in. Made it home for 7.9km and OCD'ed a bit to make 8km.
I really need to do some more running in July...
@PastorVincent great job on finishing your race!8 -
Last run for June, 3.1 miles at WC Johnson in the dark. I haven’t gotten much sleep for the past couple of days due to family obligations, and felt really beat up when I headed out, but felt better and better as the run went on. My husband and I ran very easy due to wanting to run the upcoming 5k hard, and also due to rough pavement with no lights. There was enough ambient sky light to see pretty well (my rule is that I only run without a headlamp if it’s light enough that I could see a snake on the trail), but we had one moment when we ran right up on a deer which was standing half on the trail. I could imagine the deer saying, Hey, hey, excuse you. EXCUSE YOU! As it shuffled and finally bounded away from us.
I like that WC Johnson is open until 11 pm, but was surprised to find that someone had locked the bathrooms at 9 pm. Not cool!
I just checked the weather history and the humidity during our run was 100 percent. Ugh, that explains why it felt a little bit like swimming! Temp only about 80 but the dewpoint was 75. My clothes when I finished looked like I jumped in a swimming pool, and my husband’s glasses kept fogging over.
I tallied my running miles for June last night and it’s about 45, which is pretty good considering that I was aiming for anything over 30. My Achilles’ tendon is coming along, which was my primary goal for this month, but still far from back to the way it was. However, I am now able to run 5 miles easy or 3 miles hard without creating a setback, which at least means I can safely race 5k now. I had hoped to be running 10k by the end of June, but the ankle is not quite there yet. And I accomplished my other goal, which was continuing to run regularly in the heat, to get used to it.6 -
@PastorVincent great finish in adverse conditions! And congrats to Kristi for making it as far as she did! I love the award thingies.
@Tramboman Congrats on the AG finish!
@shanaber happy birthday Hobbes the Visla! What a good doggie sitting there not even looking at his treat.
@MobyCarp I read your race report out loud to my husband and we both got a kick out of it. We kept getting hopelessly lost when we were trying to practice on the trails for our winter trail series, but at least on the day of, everything was well marked with plenty of volunteers stationed at confusing switchovers. At least you have the satisfaction of knowing you ran well... in something generally akin to the right direction...2 -
@PastorVincent That mud is just gross. It reminds me of what we have at the edge of the cow ponds on the farm. Yuck! You are amazing for finishing! I can't imagine doing that for 7 hours! I am curious as to what the criteria was for pulling people from the race.
@Tramboman Yeah! Congratulations!
@NiigataA Oh no! Hope it isn't too sore this morning.
@shanaber Great run! Happy Birthday to Hobbes!
@katharmonic Sounds like a brutally hot and humid run. Glad you enjoyed Chicago. O'Hare is the worst!
0 -
@noblsheep @quilteryoyo @rheddmobile @katharmonic @kgirlhat thanks!
@quilteryoyo some people were clearly pulled because although they wanted to continue it was obvious they could not. Mrs. PastorVincent (aka Kristi) was pulled because she missed the cut off on her second loop. They pulled people that did not complete the second loop in time so that no one would be running after sunset in the deep woods.1 -
@MobyCarp Ugh, I have taken wrong turns at races before. That sucks, but I was never in any danger of winning, that would just make it worse.1
-
@PastorVincent I cannot get my brain around that race, let alone think what to say except you survived it in one piece and that in itself sounds like a huge achievement!1
-
6 mi short. . . running wise (26 of 33). Did more hiking, though (34 mi). I think next month 45 is a reasonable goal (substitute 15 mi of running for 30 mi of hiking.)4
-
Not saying that I fell behind on keeping up with everyone but
Spent 7 days out of town for work - was planned for 2 days and spent 7 - you do the math on suitcase/clothing management. Which explains the gap from the 15th to the 22th. It did allow my grumpy calf to come back to normal.

I’ve been keeping up reading posts but not writing them - so it goes. Life hit me with a one-two last week that took a few days to pick myself back up from, but at least I’m finally feeling better. Not just back to normal, but actually better than I was before this garbage week. I think that means I learned something from it.
Anyhow, my last run of June was this past Saturday, 3.1 miles exactly at the Lift Bridge 5k in Bayport, WI. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful course, and the weather wasn’t bad at all at 7 in the morning, though I could have done with a little less humidity.
This was a smaller race than I’m used to, maybe 200 people in the 5K. I’m not sure how many ran the 10K and 10Mi races because they were bussed to their starting lines elsewhere. I saw a young guy finishing as we were leaving who might have been the winner of the 10K, but otherwise folks were fairly spread out.
I ran by feel, slowing myself down a couple of times when my shins or hamstring started barking. Thankfully slowing made the pain go away entirely, which feels like a big win. I don’t need to run fast, I just need to RUN.
I’d hoped June would be my base-building month, but instead it was another month of injury and recovery. I DNSed my trail race, downgraded my 10 Mile race to a 5K, and will be downgrading my half marathon at the beginning of August to a 10K. I’m okay with that. I feel more aware of my body’s fragility but also mentally and emotionally stronger than I was at the beginning of the month, which I will take as a net win.
I hit my yoga and moderate cardio goals pretty consistently this month, and made it to strength class at least twice every week, if not three times. And I ran 27.45 miles. I’ll take it. On to July!
June Total: 27.45 miles
Revised June Goals: Lift 3x/week, 30 minutes/day of moderate cardio, 30 minutes/day of mobility. Run when I can.

This. Seriously. One of the major differences between runners who are successful long term and those that are not is that they learn to listen to their own bodies.3 -

Hello!!
I'm sorry I deserted you all the second half of June. Work got busy and while I kept up with my running for the most part, I didn't keep up here. Then I was lucky enough to contract a stomach virus that kept me from leaving the bathroom June 29 and 30. Anyway, I finished the month with 70.8 miles logged. I entered a small 5K in my local park on June 22 and I won my age group which was the first time I've done that in 2 years. My best friend also won her age group (she's a few years older than me which is great because we will never compete against each other). Anyway, I'm behind in my goal of 1,020 miles for the year- I should have hit 510 by June 30 and I'm at 445. Anyway, I hope everyone had a great June and happy Mid-Year!6 -
@PastorVincent I think you got dirty, worked hard, and should shake that post race funk. In my opinion, 5 hours for a 50k trail, is just unreasonable. @7lenny7 would be more of an authority on that. They typically are “races” that break you in ways road races don’t.
Ya did good. Where’s @MNLittleFinn? He’d be proud of you.
Keeping track of him on FB is where I am. He did a great job pushing on.1 -
