It's time for the JULY 2020 Running Challenge!
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the June 2020 Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10798171/june-2020-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until July 1, 2020 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
Bookmark the previous and past challenges:https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running ). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody elses Chapter 20.

What will July 2020 hold for us in the running world? Whether there are in-person events or virtual challenges, I know that you all will be out there training and meeting your own goals. And if not, we'll keep each other company with support and encouragement.
I don't know what to set as a goal this month. I will probably do some more long hikes so running miles might be a little low. However, July is Sarcoma Awareness Month and I dedicate my miles to my sister who died of sarcoma in 2014. I don't have time to organize a virtual race and I know people are pretty overloaded with requests for donations and times are tough so I'm not doing much of a fund-raising push this year. I'm thinking about just saying to my friends and family that they can "sponsor" me by giving me a dollar and I'll run a mile and donate that dollar to the cause, just seeing where that gets me.
That said, I think I will say 120 miles again for July.
Oh, I was going to update the race schedule I had for this year. It's not looking promising, but I did just sign up for a Spartan race at the end of August. Seems unlikely when the September one was cancelled but I needed to use up a code.
1/1/2020 Resolution Run (4-5 miles), Syracuse NY: 4.25 miles in 48:31
1/12/2020 Chilly Chili 5k, Cazenovia NY 29:09 (2nd fastest 5k)
4/3/2020 Spartan Stadion (5k) Citifield, NY NY CANCELLED
5/3/2020 Mountain Goat Run 10-mile, Syracuse NY CANCELLED
7/11/2020 Spartan Super (10K) Palmerton, PA - POSTPONED TO OCTOBER 3
8/30/2020 Spartan Super (10K) West Virginia
9/12/2020 Spartan Beast (13.1), Killington, VT CANCELLED
10/03/2020 Spartan Super (10K) Palmerton, PA (maybe, possible conflict even if not cancelled)

Lol nope, it's the last day of the month tomorrow so seems perfect timing to me!
My goal, continue to not annoy injury, And be able to run the whole month.
Probably do around 130km.
Will see6 -
Going to up my goal this month to 75 miles (June goal was 60).4
-
PastorVincent wrote: »I swear y'all seem to jump the gun sooner every month
There's only 2 days left in the month of June.
2 -
I'll say 110 miles for July. We are starting a test cycle so I'll really have to work hard for this one, since testing means LONG hours for me.5
-
Thanks for setting us up @katharmonic!
I likely won't be able to run this month but hopefully will be walking some after the 10th so I am going to set a walking goal of 30 miles.4 -
@katharmonic Thanks for setting us up for July.
I'm in for 170k again.4 -
Thanks for putting this together. I will stick to 60 miles this month too.3

Err. July has 31 days. I posted that the morning of June 28th... so 28,29,30, and 31 were still left. That is FOUR days.0 -

Never mind. I am obviously very confused.6 -
Well I went from 100 miles in April and May to ZERO miles in June due to my chronic plantar fasciitis. And after a whole month of no running, it still hurts most of the day. I have said for years that long term resting never has really cured any of my injuries. The last two times I have had PF it took a year to get over. It had been about 8 months this round, so I'm going to just suck it up and start running again.
Will go slow, and not very long. But damnit, I gonna run this month 🤪
ETA: @katharmonic Thanks for setting up July!11 -
If I followed my plan, and ran every day that could be running or XT, I would run 114.5 miles in July. I know based on family obligations and the possibility of going back to work a little that that won't happen. Since I am not going to make my goal of 90 miles in June, I'm just going to stick with that goal until I get there. Then I can increase it. BTW, if I continue to follow this plan, I would be ready to run a HM the second weekend in August.4
-
I'm going to stick with my 100 mile goal again for July. Thanks for setting us up @katharmonic!3

So running storytime...
I was on the way back from my normal route, plodding along at "are we done yet" level of pace when this black cat comes trotting out holding a bunny in its mouth. It notices me and drops the bunny, and backs off a few steps. The bunny shakes its head and looks around like it was think "how in the world did I get here?" The bunny looked unharmed and I just kept plodding along so not sure how that story ended.
So you cat people, what do you think happened there? This is not a cat I know, just some random black cat and I was still at least a mile from home.5 -
Typed a long post then hit the wrong button.
Sulking now.
@katharmonic thanks for setting us up.
Goal for July is 151.25km according to Hal. I think he's trying to kill me again. Most I've ever done in a month before was 145km.
Nosing about on my phone I found my first Garmin run was the 13th of July last year. I've run 1,442.8km since then. Not much for many, but the fact that if nothing goes wrong (famous last words) I will have run 1,500km in a year is a huge achievement for me!
Guess I'll have to go for 1,000 miles in a year next. This year's Run The Year goal was to get the 2020 miles in individually by running and walking. Next year I might think about joining a team again and pledging those 1,000 miles running.
I guess it's my subconscious because I know the anniversary of his death is coming up, but I really thought for a minute this morning that I saw @MobyCarp running. The guy was his spitting image! Can't believe he's been gone almost a year.
ETA @PastorVincent no idea about the cat and bunny... are you sure you didn't fall down any holes? Was the bunny wearing a blue jacket?8 -
@PastorVincent Strange. Maybe the cat has been scolded for catching bunnies in the past?0
-
I'm raising my goal from 130 miles to 135 miles for the month of July. Marathon training has started in earnest. I really need to set up a plan. I have several that I've used before just need to tweak one and go with it instead of running willy-nilly.
Thanks for setting us up for July @katharmonic!
@PastorVincent - I bet that as soon as you passed the cat went after the little bunny again. Hopefully, he was able to hop away.
@eleanorhawkins - Happy run-aversary! Considering how you have been confined to your home for days and days on end, I think you have done extraordinary this year!5 -

I dunno. If it was a feral cat, then that is the same as hoping the cat starves. If it is a well cared for house cat then I guess that is different.0 -

Ty ty! Garminversary though, not runaversary. Don't even know exactly when that is! The first run I logged on the zombies run app was June 3rd 2018. Think I'd been running a few months by then. My memory is shot to pieces nowdays. I blame age and hormones 😂3 -

Congrats on the garminversary!
And I am totally with you on the other bit!0 -
Going to say 100 again with 130 stretch...
Might be getting a spin bike, so could be more of that happening instead of running as much..5 -

So you made me look. The oldest activity I have tracked in Run Keeper was May 2010. a 2 mile run on a track, at 13 min mile pace. I know was running years before that, but before that, I did not really track. My son is 16 now, so I know I have been running for about 16 years.4 -
I have no idea. Let's say 80km and see what happens.4
-
I’m going to say 100 miles again because I really do have these lofty plans of completing that Run Across Ga by the end of August, but we all know how well I’ve done with meeting my goals for the last few months. 🤪
@PastorVincent I bet that cat snatched that bunny back up as soon as you left.
I don’t know if I posted about it last year, but there was a hawk who caught a bunny in my neighborhood last year, and it sat on this plot of grass with its wings spread out, I guess trying to intimidate me so I wouldn’t steal its food. Don’t worry, Mr. Hawk, I don’t need you gouging my eyes out...5 -
200 miles for July (minimum)8
-
After smashing my goal of 75km last month, I think I'm going to go for 85km in July. I'm eyeing up that 100km (I made 96km in June), but I don't know if the hot weather will hold me back and I'm not currently training for any 10K. We'll see. I can always reassess mid month!
I've just checked my Zombies Run! app. My first run was 26th April 2015, that was the start of the C25K training plan. Blimey, I've been running over 5 years. Am I allowed to call myself a runner yet?! My 'graduation 5K', at the end of week 8 was on 15th June 2015 - 5 years later (bar a day - 14th June 2020), and I ran a stonking 10K. It's progress, but it's very sloooow progress. May be I should look to finally do a half marathon next year.5 -
I'll go with 30 walking miles. Midwife banned me from running due to pelvic pain and a history of preterm births running in my family.
Pretty depressed I can't run but maybe the fresh air will offer a more positive perspective than the back of my eyelids.12 -

That will get you through the first week. What about the other three weeks?
