@QuirkyJules For me, cross-training is anything that doesn’t wear out the same parts of me that tend to get stress and repetitive motion injuries from running, so I can still do it on a day that is a rest day from running. Bonus if it strengthens me for running or hits a part of my body that running doesn’t benefit. So, for example, right now plyometrics are out because they make my knee injury worse, but stationary bike is in. Weight training is in. Pushups and other core work. Some kinds of dancing. Swimming is ideal but I don’t have access to a pool at the moment.1

@Tramboman Glad the back is doing better. I'd love to see that video.0

Plan called for a 35 minute recovery run today. I didn't get out of the house until about 9:30. It was 75°F with 69% humidity. On paper, that doesn't sound too bad, but it seemed really oppressive today. It was slow, but I got it done. Ran 2.6 miles and walked 1.

Not sure if anyone else received the email but looks like Renegade Racing is going out of business because of all the race cancellations. They were a pretty great race organizer and director group. 😢
ETA - I didn't realize that they were just in So CA so I guess most of you wouldn't be familiar with them.6 -

Sunny, low 70s F and a breeze from the southwest. Back was still good; in kilometers 6 and 7 I had the same pain and stiffness level I used to have in kilometer 1 pre-injury.

Hello all! It's been over a month since I posted a run. I've been quietly lurking, liking, hugging you all (wait, that kinda sounded a little creepy 😵 ) But I've missed y'all. I have read a lot of great, inspiring, and triumphant achievements.
Everyone is coping really well during these crazy times, and that makes my heart happy 💓
Well, posting my 1st 'run' since the end of May. Thought it was time to try it. So after an hour of walking I just started jogging slowly. My PF was still talking, but it wasn't screaming. But after 1 mile I decided that was enough of an introduction back. I walked for another hour and it felt OK. Will try a few more short runs like this and we'll see how it goes in the days ahead.13 -
@scott6255 glad to see you start to introduce running again. Take it slowly and I hope you'll have be able to get back to things.
@tramboman also glad your back is doing better. We would all subscribe to your video channel for stretching tutorials.
Good job everyone who's been running in the heat and getting it done.

I haven't run today yet. Planning to but it will be short. Speaking of which, look at that tiny .8 miles yesterday, which took me 17 minutes. Because this was a trail run at about 13 hours into a 15 hour hike and I needed to get my run done for the day. I didn't have much left in me but when it flattened out a bit I decided to just go for it. There were lots of rocks and mudholes to navigate so the pace was quite slow overall. But it actually felt good in the more open trail to just pick up the pace a bit and get this done. I had a moment of panic after I stopped and was worried that I'd lost my group and was going to be eaten by a bear, but I was on the right trail and soon found them by backtracking just a little.
This was a brutal but awesome hike. 20+ miles (my watch died so not sure the real total) and 15ish hours. I was not anticipating that this one would be LONGER than the one I did a just 10 days ago. We did two more peaks of the Adirondack 46 high peaks (Cliff and Redfield Mtns) so that brings my total to 5/46 hiked. My friends with me are up to something like 11, 17, 23 and 40 peaks so I have some catching to do! They were really challenging, with some rock climbing involved, which was really fun. That last few miles out, though - I was beyond exhausted and it seemed like it would never end. Never so happy to see the car again.
Here's a few pics

@QuirkyJules Welcome and great question:
I am a weak runner ( hip stress fracture so I had to find another exercise) who was told no running for 12 weeks. I had just lost 20 lbs starting last fall and was was not going to not exercise. Got a Peloton since I was told I could ride low impact. My cardio output is much higher on the bike but I am now back to slow running and walking and love them both, great cross training each of them. And yoga/stretching and rolling. Now I just have to really focus on strength to improve my running and protect my bones.2 -

7/4: 4.7 mile walk
July Miles To Date: 8 miles

Did a 69 mile bike ride yesterday....not too hard just too long. That was a nice cross train
@mbaker566 That scavenger hunt looks like fun....any idea how long the runs are? Wonder if I could do it?
@rheddmobile Sorry about your knee - hope the exercises help. Love the cartoon!
@Tramboman If eating was cross-training, I am winning!!!!
@quilteryoyo great run.....hard on a treadmill but better than the heat of summer!
@Elise4270 Ouch....you need more than an aspirin....heal fast!
@katharmonic Beautiful hike....what elevation is that....looks really challenging!2 -

Thanks all for the warm welcome and the responses about cross-training. It is really interesting to me to hear the different answers about what constitutes cross-training for different people....I do like the "anything active but not running" version myself as I think it helps me not take it all too seriously or overthink whether I’m doing the “right” exercise. I tend to be overly serious about enough things in life as it is!
Yesterday was cross-training for me - took my two dogs on a hilly 10 mile morning walk, then in the evening did another 4 miles of walking on my own. Sometimes I also bicycle for cross-training but longest rides so far are about 25 miles and I try to find the flattest courses I can because I'm terrified of losing speed uphill and falling over. I’m happy to hear there are some other folks on this thread who ride, too.
Today I was breaking in a new pair of shoes and also aiming to do a long-ish run. Ended up doing a 10k which is on the longer side for me at this point and I was happy with my new shoe springy step. Which brings me to another question actually - I’ve heard about rotating different shoes….do people have multiple pairs of the same model that they rotate, or is there a more deliberate strategy using different models? So far I only have worried about trail running shoes vs road shoes but I’m wondering if my near-retirement road shoes still have a purpose other than backups once the new kicks are fully broken in.
Last month I counted walking miles towards my distance goal at 75% - that percentage was based on a rough example of the relative effort/calorie burn for walking versus running and probably is way oversimplified - but this month I'd like to achieve the 100 mile goal only counting runs. Since I only really ran 62 miles last month (and walked 107 miles), 100 miles of running is a big step up for me.
7/1 2.2 mi

7/3 0.0 mi - XT 14 mi walking

10.3 miles today.
I actually got up at 6:30 am. Haven’t done that in awhile ..actually since COVID-19. It was hard, but it’s already 80 by 8:00, so the earlier the better.
I also had new shoes! Went to Fleet Feet yesterday and they didn’t have my size in my current shoe, so I tried a couple others and went with the new Saucony. Have never worn Saucony before, and they felt quite good. Has room in the toe box which is a must now for me. Light and cushioned, which is great.
The felt pretty good today. I still may get my other shoe when on sale just to have and rotate.
First 8 miles were decent pace, averaging 10:35. The last two I wogged. It was just hot.
@QuirkyJules I like to bike for cross train and also strength training and hiit type workouts. So yeah basically another activity other than running.
Tomorrow will likely be cross training of house work! Lol
@rheddmobile Yes! Same age. I think @kgirlhart too. Sorry about the knee. That’s tough. Hugs.
@katharmonic Yet again, impressive and great photos
@Elise4270 Oohhh. Ouch is right
@bearly63 Thats quite a ride! On the Peleton?
Oh! Our team hit 2020 for the year in RTY! We did it in 6 months! Thanks to @Camaramandy648 and her challenge, the miles just added up! Way to go!
My personal one is 1000, and am ahead of pace to get that too!
Happy 4th!9 -
Can you bandit a virtual race? I was considering the 4 on the 4th virtual race, but wasn’t sure my knee would be up to running today and knew I would not be up to racing. My husband said he didn’t want a medal for a walk so we didn’t sign up for it, but then we dressed up, got out there, and ran the whole distance after all! Yay! And my knee feels less trashed after 4 easy miles than it did after 1 hard mile on Wednesday, which is encouraging.
It ended up being 4 very easy miles, about 11 minute pace, but we were both soaked with sweat, which seemed ridiculous when the temp was only 80. But then I ran the 94% humidity through a dew point calculator and found out we were running at a blistering 78 degree dewpoint. I think the pace adjustment chart for a 78 degree dewpoint says something like “Just lay down and die.” We were the only runners out there, but the road was full of bicyclists who kept calling out “Happy 4th of July” when they saw how I was dressed. Some of the cyclists were in full red white and blue kit too. After running we walked around the farm park and fed raisins to the goats and chickens. Altogether a nice morning.
Happy 4th to all the Americans!5 -
No run for me today. Saturday's are usually rest days and tomorrow will be my long run.
@QuirkyJules For cross training I do yoga. And I also walk my dogs.
@hamsterwheel6 Yes you and @rhedmobile and I are the same age. I think @katharmonic may be too.2 -
Yes, I'm right there too. We've got a little club!
@Elise4270 so sorry about your knee. That looks painful.
@rheddmobile so glad you felt encouraged about your knee and good job getting the whole 4 miles in for the 4th.
@bearly63 those peaks are at about 3900 and 4600 ft elevation. And your name reminds me that there is a lot of bear activity being reported in that area. One group we passed on the hike asked us if we were the "bear people" - I guess a group had been camping and the bear tried to raid their camp. We had bear spray at the ready but luckily did not see any. (It sounds like one particular bear has been getting very bold and a lot of sightings/encounters are being reported)

I was certainly in no mood to go out and run today after yesterday's long hike. I slept in and lazed around all morning, feeling very content to move as little as possible. Finally mid-afternoon I realized I had better get out and run because I made plans for the evening and wouldn't want to run after that. So I went out 3:30 pm when it was 90 degrees out and suffered through a short run to get it done.4 -
Was very out of sorts yesterday and skipped my run, so today was a combination of determination to get back on track and punishment for flaking out yesterday! As a result I managed 9 miles - definitely my longest run since October last year. My pace was 10:47/m so not too bad. But it was really windy and raining hard for the first third, then sunny, then cloudy and windy again and then really sunny for the last couple of miles. 3 seasons of weather in one run! Made it feel even longer...
Sending healing thoughts to @elise4270 and hope @Scott6255 @bearly63 @rheddmobile and @Avidkeo are continuing to feel better with their injuries.
I have no idea how to respond to the stories of wild animals and pictures of amazing trails other than with awe and wistfulness. My part of London is very green and leafy but it is still the city. It must be so nice to run in some of these places - enjoy everyone!

I wasn't going to make the same mistake as yesterday and wait until the hottest part of the day to run, so I agreed to meet friends this morning. It was not too bad yet, but definitely glad to be done with it. Then I took Stella out for her walk so we can relax in the shade or AC the rest of the day.
Have a great day, everyone.5 -
Did anyone look at the air quality this morning? I can only assume it’s fireworks related since it seems to cluster in major cities and be worst starting around midnight last night, clearing up as the day goes on which is the opposite of the way pollution usually works. Memphis was rated dark red, I thought all the stuff in the air this morning was fog but I guess it was particulates! Des Moines, Iowa was rated so unhealthy that I looked at the news to see if they had some sort of forest fire!
Anyway it’s a lifting day for me so I am staying indoors. The last time I ran during an air quality alert it felt awful.4 -

I managed to get out and run 10 miles around 6:50 this morning, and it was already hot. Or maybe just still hot. It never really gets cool around here in the summer. The weather was really just meh. It seemed worse in reality than it sounded when I checked my weather app. It was only about 79°F and 83% humidity. The dew point was around 73°. I have run in worse, but today it felt like a bit if a struggle. I was a little worried that there would be lots of loose dogs after the fireworks last night but there were just the usual loose dogs. I was startled by a raccoon. I was running past a house when I heard a growl and a clatter on the porch. I thought it was a dog and I was hoping it would be tied to the porch and was totally expecting to see a dog charging at me, but when I looked it was a raccoon. He jumped off the porch and ran to the back of the house. I was really glad he ran the other way.
I did see a few loose dogs. One was a black pit bull puppy that I have seen out several times. As usual, I saw him from far enough away that I could turn and go down a different road. I saw another dog that I have seen from a distance a few times. This time I didn't really see him, I just heard toenails click clacking behind me and when I turned to see what the clacking noise wad I saw him just walking along behind me. I swear that dog smiled at me when I looked at him. I just continued on my way and when I looked back again he was off sniffing around in someone's yard.
I saw lots of birds today too. I saw the usual dove, mockingbirds, and scissortails and hummingbirds, but I also saw a blue jay and a roadrunner that I haven't seen in a while.
I'm glad I got out there even though it wasn't really a pretty day. It was still a good run.

I decided yesterday morning to drive to my favorite local park that overlooks the river to run. There were lots of others running and kayaking/tubing. I got in 4.2 miles. I slept in til 9:00 this morning, which is REALLY late for me (I’m usually a 6:30 even on the weekend kinda gal). It was already over 80 by the time I got out, so today was a slow 3 miles.
I took tomorrow off work too, so I hope to get out earlier and get in some decent mileage tomorrow. Looks like storms all week here, so we’ll see how the rest of the week pan out.5 -
5 miles today were supposed to be at a higher HR, but just couldn't keep at that intensity.

Just catching up on the weekend posts.
@Faebert sounds like your track 9 miles was crazy with that weather.
@rheddmobile I walked outside with the dogs at 4:30 this morning and there was smoke in the air from the fireworks.
@katharmonic that is just an amazing climb, wow!!!
@Scott6255 glad to see you back, slow and steady.
@QuirkyJules when I cross train I usually ride a bike, or convince myself that walking fast with my dog(s) is cross training ha ha I’m a diehard Brooks Launch girl so I rarely wear another brand/model but I wear everything from the 3 to 7 series. My trails shoes are all different.
@hamsterwheel6 woohoo for new shoes
These days no matter what time I run it’s hot. Skip had a 2.5 hour run on her schedule for Friday I told her I’d go and run 5 miles with Champ and just hang out with him until she was done. It was hot and I wanted to be there in case she didn’t want to drive. She started out with us and at about 3 miles I said to her, nope you are not running that it’s too hot out here. It was about 85F and that was in the shade at 8:00 am and she was headed out into the sun. So we did some running and walking and playing with the pup in the creek and more running and walking for over 2.5 hours so she got the time on her feet without dying.
Skip was sad to miss a local trail race coming up this week she is really wanted to get all the medals for the series, I just talked to the race director and he said she can run it virtual but not be eligible for prizes and she was good with that. She’s out of town and won’t be back in time. He said she can run the half virtual too since she’ll be at school same deal no prizes. She was happy about that too, that one she might do before she leaves for school a couple weeks before it’s actually run so she can run the course here.
